PROGRESSIVE HOME FRAGRANCING

Welcome

@Prog_Gifts

Welcome to Progressive Gifts & Home’s special Spring/Summer home fragrancing publication that gives a true insight into the many strands that encapsulate a sector that continues to go from strength to strength. Not only does today’s breadth of home fragrancing products introduce signature scents into every room in the home, many fragrances also have other more therapeutic properties that address today’s focus on wellbeing, helping people to relax and unwind, as well as to re-energise. To quote the Style Sisters, Gemma Lilly and Charlotte Reddington: “Scents change everything in a room, whether it’s a candle for the living room or bathroom, or an everyday diffuser that draws attention to the room when you walk in.” Vessels too, whether for candles, reed diffusers, mist diffusers or wax melts, are increasingly design-led, created with interiors in mind. Many of them are refillable and multi-purpose, ensuring that they can be re-used again and again, and not only for fragrance but to display a pot plant, stationery items, kitchen utensils and much more besides. And, of course, there’s an increasing focus on sustainability, with more brands not only choosing to manufacture in the UK using natural biodegradable soy wax, but also ensuring that glass vessels, reeds and packaging are all recyclable and often vegan. To discover the latest home fragrance launches, as well as what’s trending, turn to pages 9-13. We also caught up with one of the newest home fragrancing kids on the block, Demi Pendakis, founder of FYG (Find Your Glow) who launched the company during the pandemic. Wellbeing Sales Soar In Vegas For Marmalade of London, the recent Las Vegas Market – Winter 2022 was a huge success for the company, with Marmalade’s sales director Helen Flook commenting: “Following the very successful launch of our new Wellbeing range in the UK, the collection

made its debut at the first trade show of the year which was held in Las Vegas. We sent a whole container to our warehouse in New York, but due to the huge number of sales, we subsequently had to send a second one!” The company will also be exhibiting at other American gift and home shows this year to include forthcoming exhibitions in Dallas, LA and Atlanta. A record number of new accounts were opened at Spring Fair too, confirmed the company. “We’re still on target to make everything we do eco-friendly and are continuing to support the work of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust,” confirmed Helen.

Candlelight Celebrates 50 Years To celebrate Candlelight’s 50th anniversary in 2022, the company has not only relaunched its iconic Vintage Amber storage jars but has also designed a range of amber candles and reed diffusers to complement the range. “It features a refreshing Spring scent with a hint of warmth,” explains marketing manager Kate Winch. “The Wild Meadows candles are filled in apothecary style amber glass jars, complemented by a reed diffuser and room spray, to ensure full exposure of the scent throughout the home.” Right: Amber candles complement Candlelight’s Vintage Amber storage jars.

New Scottish Showroom Opens Ashleigh & Burwood Make It A Trio Ashleigh & Burwood recently announced the opening of a new dedicated showroom showcasing the company’s home fragrance collections in Scotland. The showroom, which opened in midMarch, is housed at Banton Mill near Kilsyth and is operated by sales agent Bill McKechnie, who is inviting retailers to visit and sample products from Ashleigh & Burwood, as well as a selection of other well known companies in the gift and home industry. Banton Mill is the third in a network of showrooms for Ashleigh & Burwood, joining Newby Hall in North Yorkshire and the

company’s showroom at their head office, Heritage House in Surrey. “Our showrooms are a great addition to the more traditional and established means of sharing our products with retailers,” comments managing director Andrew Nettleton. “It’s another option for retailers that allows them to explore our ranges in a more relaxed way that can be tailored to their needs.” Email: bill@wammarketing.co.uk; tel: 07919 536100.

Celebrating Botanic Garden

Inspired By Australia

Botanic Garden, designed by the acclaimed, best-selling designer Susan Williams-Ellis in 1972, founder of Portmeirion, remains among the Group’s best selling designs, with Wax Lyrical contributing to the British classic’s 50th anniversary celebrations with a range of candles, reed diffusers and hand care products. Based on the Portmeirion Botanic Garden sugar pots, featuring traditional Botanic Garden illustrations, both the candle and reed diffuser use the same base, with engraved wooden lids. The lid for the candle can be used as a coaster during its use, and afterwards, the container can be washed and used as a storage pot. Blends, fragrances and vessels are all British made, and the use of coconut wax further promotes the eco and environmentally conscious message.

Coco & Glow’s new summer collection, launching shortly, is based around Australia, with founder Heather Willis wanting to showcase the beauty of the place she called home for over ten years. “I have designed two candles that encapsulate the land. One is the Native Bush Flower candle, with the second a Sea Salt & Surf candle reflecting the country’s stunning beaches.” As a company, Coco & Glow has been eco-conscious from the early days. “Our packaging and candle jars can be recycled or upcycled, and we only use natural coconut and rapeseed wax which is sustainably sourced and a much cleaner and safer burn than the alternatives in the market.”

Neroli Trends Neroli is currently among the most popular fragrances for gift-led greeting card-cum-jewellery and candle company Crumble & Core. “We try to match our images, such as Mother’s Day, Yoga and New

Mum with fragrances, and these have worked very well,” explains director and co-founder Louise Pike. “The glass is recycled, and the candles are made from 100% natural plant wax from an ethical source. Plus, everything is vegan and eco-friendly. Our customers love the idea of different images on the candles as they make wonderful gifts for a new home, a new mum, a birthday and so on.”

TRENDS

On The Scent Home fragrancing has arguably become the biggest sector in the giftware marketplace, with established companies ever more innovative and new companies entering the market place with their own niche USPs. Across the board, along with brilliant seasonal fragrances, multi-purpose vessels, evolving formats and stand-out packaging, the sector is continuing to go from strength to strength. Currently, there is a huge focus on wellbeing and sustainability which are continuing to drive the marketplace for both manufacturers and suppliers. In the same way that a favourite perfume or aftershave becomes a person’s ‘signature’ scent, the same is, of course, true of fragrancing the home. From the hallway to the living room, bedroom and bathroom, it’s what gives a home the ‘wow’ factor, and it’s likely to be the very first thing that a visitor will notice. Colour too, draws the eye, with home fragrancing companies

Packing A Punch At Best Kept Secrets, the company has put a new twist on its Just Because candle tins and three lites gift boxes, making them more giftable and colourful, while staying with the original sparkle toppings that give the brand its USP. “We’ve got captions on our packaging that lead into verse, highlighting a giving occasion, be it a special friend, lovely mum or thank you teacher gift,” explains managing director Vanessa Curry. “Additionally, for Spring/Summer, we’ve got a new, three lite boxed coastal collection – one of six designs – which makes a lovely holiday ‘take home’ self purchase, or a gift to bring back for a friend.” At Olor, which launched less than a year ago, co-founder Louise Rogers comments: “Packaging has always been a huge talking point for us. We spent a lot of time working on our branding, making sure the packaging really tells the story of each scent, even before people smell the product, so each colour pallet has been carefully thought out. There are elements that many use on a daily basis, and we find that these colours can represent a certain scent making our packaging relatable.”

Memories Are Made Of This Tapping into the current wellnesss/feelgood trend that’s taking the home fragrancing sector by storm, Find Your Glow (pronounced ‘fig’), founded by Demi Pendakis in 2020 at the start of the pandemic, is among the newest home fragrancing kids on the block. PG&H asked Demi where his inspiration comes from and what gives the company its USP in a crowded marketplace. Having grown up strongly influenced by his

essential oils and blends. “Many of the high end

but that was realistically affordable,” he highlights.

But when Covid hit in early 2020, Demi was among those who succumbed to the virus in February, before anyone was really aware of how serious it was. “Like so many others, I was extremely unwell, completely losing my sense of taste and smell, fortunately eventually regaining it when my wife offered me a bowl of figs,” he explains. “That moment transported back to my grandma’s house in Greece, and to her fig orchards. Having become disillusioned with the fashion industry, I thought, if a smell can have such a positive effect on me, maybe there’s a way I can create a fragrancing business where I can recreate feelgood memories for other people.” The seed of an idea for Find Your Glow (FYG) was planted, growing during the long months of lockdowns, with Demi working on the idea of creating a mid-market home fragrancing brand that would be based on memories, as well as wellbeing, spanning candles, reed diffusers and

Ringing The Seasonal Changes A fresh, exciting development for FYG is Seasons, a brand new candle duo launched at Spring Fair earlier this year, that change fragrances as they burn. Explains Demi: “There are two three wick candles, each weighing a kilo, that burn for 120 hours – 60 hours per season. One candle reflects the fragrances of Spring/Summer, the other the fragrances of Autumn/Winter. Plus, each comes with a sustainable seeded dust card that can be planted in the garden to grow beautiful meadow flowers. Looking ahead, I’m also hoping to bring out seeded card boxes for our reed diffusers and for our candle and gift boxes too,” he adds. “Seasons was a year in the making and from a creative perspective, this range totally reflects me and what I’m all about.”

ABOVE: Demi Pendakis, founder of FYG.

However, in creating FYG, Demi didn’t want to create “just another fragranced product” but an immersive experience. “What started as a desire to re-capture my love of family holidays spent in Greece as a child subsequently developed into a project encapsulating a range of significant, beautiful experiences from the past.” Five months later, Demi was ready to launch FYG’s debut, flagship collection, aptly named Memories, which has a gold inlay inside each candle container to create an ambient golden glow, along with a card explaining something about the fragrance. “This collection is distinctly evocative, with the power to stimulate, calm, restore, excite and invigorate the senses,” explains Demi. “It really says who I am – romantic and nostalgic - and I’m inviting people to find the stories that speak to them.” Drawing on his own personal memories, there’s Grandma’s Garden, Amalfi, SW19 – a reference to the Wimbledon tennis tournament - Strawberries and Champagne, Cedar and Jasmine, Caribbean Waters and much else besides. “Every candle or reed Far left: Evocative Caribbean Waters from The Memories collection. Emotional Connection Of all the many nostalgic fragrances across the FYG collections, Demi says that the one he has the greatest emotional connection to is The Amalfi. “A couple of years ago, I took my family on a cruise, and when we got off at Amalfi my reaction was ‘wow’! It’s such a stunning place, as is the Amalfi coastline. It’s very other worldly and very romantic too, with our fresh Amalfi fragrance capturing some of those wonderful memories.”

Inset: The Amalfi fragrance brings back holiday memories.

Candles

St. Eval: scented candle tins and teal lights.

Fragrances are lovely and a little unusual, based on nature’s fragrances with Bay & Rosemary our top seller in the range. Products are made in Cornwall from natural wax.

A Cheerful Giver: Keepers of the Light candle range

A US made candle with really strong fragrances. Customers love the American style scents such as maple syrup, caramel, pancake waffles etc.

Classic Candle Company: reed diffuser refills

Strong fragrances and lots of scent choices. The well priced diffuser lasts for ages - at least six months.

Made By Zen: electric mist diffusers across the range

Good quality, very reliable; colouring changing options and a good choice of fragrance oil. We have stocked the diffusers for many years.

Reed/mist diffusers

Wax melts

Room Sprays

Sassy Shop Wax: melts across the range

Good strong fragrances. Each melt lasts for about 60 hours, so great value. They tend to appeal to a younger market as they are brightly coloured with biodegradable glitter. Products are made in Bristol.

Emily Victoria Candles: melts

UK made, there are lots of scents to choose from. Many are similar to upmarket perfumes and after shaves. Excellent value for money and strongly scented.

Manor House Home Fragrance: room sprays

They are available in the same fragrances as the company’s pot pourri and candles. Very cost effective for a quick burst of fragrance. They are loved by our more mature customers.

Love Country by Sarah Reilly: room sprays

The bottles are adorned with Sarah's artwork featuring country animals, hares, deer, robins etc., and have a very distinctive look, which our customers love. She is also a Suffolk artist, so that goes down well too. The fragrances are fine, sophisticated scents, made with top quality ingredients.

Maison Berger

A brilliant product that removes odours - eg cooking, pet smells, smoke etc – as well as adding fragrance to the room. This is the original manufacturer, who has been in business since 1898, therefore these are serious quality products with beautiful perfumes. We love them as do our customers.

Candles

Pintail Candles: Co-ordinates range

We have been Pintail fans since we opened. Re the Co-ordinates range, customers love the striking, simplistic design and the wax matching colour of the packaging. The summer fragrances, such as Gin and Prosecco, are firm favourites and make a great self purchase.

Agnes + Cat: across the board

For a higher price point and more intricate packaging choice, we love Agnes + Cat, which makes a lovely gift purchase and gives a beautiful, lasting scent.

Widdop & Co: Meg Hawkins

This range is new to us and has been a real surprise. The designs are classic, and the products have sold incredibly quickly, especially the Stag design which has a Elderflower and Pear Blossom fragrance.

Reed/mist diffusers

Wax melts

Scented sachets

Candlelight: across the board

Candlelight is our top self-purchase pick. The prices are really competitive, and the products are very good value. The ranges are nicely styled and we get good repeat business.

Figtree Fragrance: Island Breeze

Wax melts were a new addition for Nest last year and we are so pleased with them. These are from a wonderful local supplier who hand makes them. Island Breeze is delicious and sells the fastest – by a long way! – followed by Oud, Peony and Cosy Cashmere. They come in pretty waxed bags and are very well priced.

Heart of the Country: scented sachets

Above: Candlelight’s Pink Chinoiserie range.

We have stocked these sachets for years and wouldn’t be without them. They are wonderful for small rooms, cupboards and cars, and are addictive scents! Everyone’s favourite is always Sweet Grace, followed by Blue Door and White Cotton.
