WELCOME TO...

Showtime 2017

As a new year dawns, and a new round of trade shows get ready to open their doors, for serious retailers it's 'showtime'! In addition to discovering exciting new products to help refresh their offer to customers, trade shows are the ideal opportunity for retailers to brush up on the latest trends in e-commerce for example, or to sit down for half an hour or so to hear a top level speaker, such as retail expert Mary Portas, who will be the keynote speaker at Spring Fair in February. (See page 24-25). Look out for more gift companies than ever at the London Stationery Show this year, thanks to The Giftware Association taking a dedicated space in the Gallery at the Business Design Centre in London's Islington in April, and do make a point of visiting dedicated greeting card show PG Live, now in its ninth year, which will be upping the ante yet again in June. (See page 22-23). Plus, with many of the major trade shows featuring more and more international exhibitors, visitors can now get the best of both worlds by seeing what’s being showcased by the leading overseas suppliers. Meanwhile, at Ambiente in February, the UK is the show's Country Partner, so if you're visiting, look out for a strong British theme. (See page 4-5). Whether at home or internationally, trade shows also have an important social side, with the possibility of a random chat with an industry friend often a prompt to pop into a different hall or to walk down another aisle. To find out more, turn the pages of Showtime to see who’s who and who’s doing what, with both UK and international show listings on pages 26-30. The most successful retailers across the board will be walking the aisles. Can you afford not to?

Brand Licensing Europe 2017 Brand Licensing Europe is the only pan-European event dedicated to licensing and brand extension. As the definitive event for the European licensing industry, BLE is a must attend event for anyone looking to discover the hottest brands, characters and images available for license. Left: The famous BLE character parade. Below: VW showcasing products in the Brands & Lifestyle zone. Bottom: BLE buzzing with meetings across all three days.

BLE’s Record Breaking Year BLE 2016 broke all records and saw a 5% increase in visitors, bringing together 7,578 retailers, licensees and manufacturers with 286 leading brand owners, 63 of which were new, for three days of networking, deal-making and trend spotting. With 76 countries represented, international attendance grew from 2015, as did the purchasing authority of visitors, with 67% having final decision authority. The Matchmaking Service Introduced for the first time last year, the Matchmaking Service allowed registered visitors and exhibitors to search for new contacts and arrange onsite meetings before the show. Over 1,740 meetings

were confirmed in 2016 and more than £1m of business generated from one user alone. Licensing Trends and Education In addition to the 2,500+ properties being showcased across the three zones at the show - Character & Entertainment, Brands & Lifestyle and Art, Design & Image - BLE hosted over 15 educational sessions split between the Licensing Academy and the Brands & Lifestyle Theatre with topics ranging from the essentials of licensing, to the globalisation of sports, and food and beverage as a driver for growth.

Growth in Retail An integral part of the show’s success is the recognition of the increasingly important role that retail plays in all aspects of licensing. BLE not only looks to nurture and grow retail presence at the show but also knowledge within the industry. The Retail Mentoring Programme had its most successful year yet in 2016, with over 50 participants from organisations including Sainsbury’s, Asda, Halfords and Marks & Spencer taking part in the six month programme in the lead up to the show. “I've been on the Retail Mentoring Programme and it's really helped broaden my knowledge. I can feel comfortable in negotiating because I understand how it all works.” Junior buyer, Asda. This year, BLE also announced its new initiative, the Retail Licensing Club, to engage retailers all year round. Members of the club will be invited to networking events throughout the year consisting of seminars looking at the latest trends and forecasts to bespoke company visits. Exposé Travel Visiting or exhibiting at a trade show - whether in the UK or internationally - can be a costly business, with hotels and travel expenses often a stumbling block. But costs can be realistic. Experts in business trips, Exposé Travel, the official UK travel partner for a host of leading home and gift shows around the world, offer extremely competitive rates for both air fares and hotels, with savings of up to 60% off standard fares.

From Chicago’s International Home & Housewares Show to Birmingham’s Spring and Autumn Fairs, Hong Kong’s Gift & Premium Fair, China’s Canton Fair and The Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Exposé Travel offers specially negotiated rates for both flights and accommodation. “Of course, it depends on when people are travelling, but the company’s expertise is in providing very competitive air fares for both exhibitors and visitors,” explains Paul Vasdev, “using reputable airlines that fly from all UK major airports.” “We also have direct access to a wide variety of hotels in the USA, thereby making attending Las Vegas’ Licensing Show or Chicago’s International Home + Housewares Show realistic possibilities. But it’s not just America. We can make suggestions as to where people might stay when they’re at a trade fair virtually anywhere in the world, and at the best possible prices, as we deal with over 70,000 hotels and 7,500 destinations worldwide. Harrogate Christmas & Gift Fair Just as we packed the decorations away and began settling back into work mode and normality after the festive season – one of the UK’s very first trade shows of the year plunges us all full blown back in to the swing of Christmas with decorations and carols galore – Harrogate Christmas & Gift, which takes place at the Harrogate International Centre from 8th to 11th January 2017.

This event is fast becoming one of the UK’s favourite trade shows, not only for buyers involved in Christmas, but for gift retailers and anyone seeking add on gift ranges for souvenir and tourist attraction outlets, department stores and even heritage and cathedral shops. It is also a ‘must’ attend event for almost every garden centre in the UK, as the Greatest Christmas Awards are hosted at the Majestic Hotel on the first night of the show, with garden centre teams turning out in force hoping to scoop a much

coveted award. Naturally, this is also an optimum time for them to view all of the latest Christmas and gift ranges new for 2017 and plan budgets long before the Spring trade shows begin. This year, Harrogate Christmas & Gift has more to offer buyers than ever before as, with the show completely sold out by September, the organisers made the decision to open two additional halls for 2017 - Hall Q and the King’s Suite. With more than 25 brand new exhibitors at the show this year, buyers will be spoilt for choice with more ranges to peruse than ever before. Hall Q is definitely ‘the destination’ for the show and not to be missed as this houses the majority of new exhibitors and also the main catering facility for the event. Several favourite brands have also relocated to this area including Playwrite Group, Hometown World, and Ackerman International, so be sure to visit them in their new location.

SHOW ESSENTIALS

Of course, one of the things that truly make Harrogate Christmas & Gift stand out from the crowd is its warm and friendly atmosphere. Once again, the organisers extend an invitation to everyone participating in the show - both exhibitors and visitors - to join them for free drinks and nibbles in the Royal Hall of the Harrogate International Centre on Monday 9th January from 6pm to 8pm. Entry to Harrogate Christmas & Gift is free for trade visitors and we highly recommend that you pre-register prior to the event to ensure swift entry. Above: Milford Collection

Spring Fair Spring Fair is the UK’s premier trade show for gift and home, attracting more than 60,000 visitors from all areas of the retail industry over five days.

Taking place from 5-9 February, more than 2,500 exhibitors will gather at Birmingham’s NEC arena to showcase their latest products and innovations across 14 carefully curated show sectors covering gifting and home collections. With over 600 exhibitors, the Gifts section will continue to remain one of the largest areas of Spring Fair. Home fragrance is a significant trend reflected across the sector this year and, with over 50 exhibitors confirmed within this market alone, the show is set to host the UK’s largest offering of suppliers under one roof. Visitors will also be treated to a vast array of personalised products and souvenirs comprising four main areas: body and bath, tourism and heritage, food and confectionery and garden giftware. The Home section, which has doubled in size to 14,000 sqm since 2014, will feature an array of contemporary and traditional furniture, lighting, decorative accessories and art. 2017 will see this area of the show become more international as it welcomes wellloved brands from across Europe. Within this space will be Coach House, taking 500sqm, with smaller stands from Wilde Java, Chic Antique and McGowan & Rutherford among others.

Left: With over 600 exhibitors, the Gifts section will continue to remain one of the largest areas of Spring Fair. Below middle: Spring Fair will return to Birmingham NEC from 5-9 February 2017. Bottom: Spring Fair’s dedicated Gift section is the ideal location for sourcing on-trend products for consumers’ everyday gifting occasions.

Meanwhile, the Contemporary sector will house a variety of lifestyle interior and home accessories brands bringing the latest in home design to visitors. Scandinavian influences will be more present than ever, following a steady climb in popularity in the UK over recent years. Such design is simple, timeless and functional, inspired by the beautiful surroundings of the region. This translates

into cosy spaces and light airy rooms, with a focus on comfort, light woods and cream accessories. A new DIY & Hardware sector will launch at the show, opening a day earlier on 4 February alongside the Volume sector. Nick Davison, Portfolio Director at Spring Fair, said: “Gift and home continue to remain staple sectors to our show and this is reflected in the diversity of exhibitors attending. There will be something for everyone with a broad spread of international brands, dynamic designs and varied price points. “The destination for forward thinking exhibitors and buyers, with an eye for something special, Spring Fair puts the newest and most exciting products within reach. With other sectors covered across the show, from jewellery and party to kitchen and dining to toys, Spring Fair 2017 is set to be another hugely exciting event.” The DIY and Volume sections of the show will open a day earlier on Saturday 4 February.
