Good product design stands the test of time. So, it is no surprise that we are seeing a real trend for reflection on products, hobbies and styles from the past. Nostalgia evokes happy feelings for all of us, and it is so refreshing to see more things being made in a mindful, quality way – just as they would have been in days gone by, before throw-away culture became the norm. We take a closer look at retro vibes on page 12 and focus on the background and history of some very special brands on page 17. Over the coming months the industry has much to look forward to. Retail, especially independent retail, is flourishing in the wake of the pandemic – and buying season will soon be upon us. London Stationery Show is just around the corner, it returns to Islington’s Business Design Centre on 17th and 18th May. This year the show is brimming over with a diverse selection of brands; you’ll see a mix of unique companies, British design talent and well-respected global brands. The exhibition will also feature an array of added-value fringe events – from Retail Matters Live Talks to Indie Matters Business Advice Clinics and Creative Matters Workshops. We meet Emma Johnston who tells us about her dynamic retail company, as well as her thriving letterpress business

unter Paper Co. has been operating for around eight years. It is a luxury stationery brand based in Northern Ireland, designing and producing a range of greetings cards and stationery, with a shop in Belfast and a thriving online store. The physical and online shop offer a carefully curated selection of the best products from around the world, as well as Hunter Paper Co.’s signature letterpress creations. The business comprises both a retail and wholesale element. Emma originally started out by selling her crafts – prints and cards – at local markets after graduating with an illustration degree. “I then ventured into wholesale, selling my products to shops, which grew the business really quickly and allowed our brand to be stocked in shops around the world,” she says. “Although my husband was always helping out behind the scenes, he officially came on board during the pandemic and we started buying other stationery items to complement our own brand, and building our ecommerce side of the business. In 2021, a shop unit came up in our neighbourhood; we

knew it was the perfect fit. We opened our doors in October and haven’t looked back!” So, what’s it like to both run a physical store and an online business? “Since we’ve opened the shop it’s been great!” says Emma. “We’ve seen an increased interest online, as well as the shop being busy. It’s also really streamlined our order processing – having our couriers collect from the shop and allowing us to work on online orders while also serving customers in the shop. We love seeing repeat customers’ names pop up in our online orders, and then meeting them in person when they click and collect their order!”

What’s in store…

Emma tells us that she has always had a love of stationery – she recalls the joy of having a new collection at the beginning of the school year. “As I started to study design and illustration I fell in love with print making and the tactility of letterpress,” she says. “From then on it was clear I had to get my own press and produce my own stationery.” As a large portion of the shop comprises the Hunter Paper Co. products, Emma carefully

selects brands and items that will fit in with the range and aesthetic. “It must be something we’d imagine having on our own desk,” she says. “We also ask ‘is it useful?’ We want our customers to find a beautiful item that they will use regularly and will brighten their day.” We dig a little deeper to find out what is doing well and is popular with customers. Emma tells us that the range of Kaweco pens have been, and continue to be, really popular since the shop opened. She also tells us that occasions are popular depending on the time of year – so Mother’s Day cards and candles, for example.

For its own line, Hunter Paper Co. creates a range of greetings cards, art prints, note cards and list pads on the letterpresses. Emma also works with UK-based digital printers to create a selection of gift wrap, and a family run bookmakers to create a collection of lay flat notebooks. Emma tells us that she adores the feeling of completing every new design on the letterpress – and this love is clear in the gorgeous designs and quality of the products. Her love of creating and craft led her to self-teach the art of the letterpress – her learnings came from Google, YouTube and, she admits, a great deal of trial and error. “I bought my first press on eBay on a little bit of optimism and naivety, hoping I could figure it out once it arrived,” she says. Emma got engrossed in it and honed her skills – then launched the letterpress range a few months later. “You can design something on paper, or digitally, but until it runs off the press for the first

As the supplier, it is great to be comfortable asking what’s working well for our retailers and if there are any gaps in their range when we’re developing new products. Seeing both sides of the coin has definitely helped us to refine our own wholesale offering. Offering good imagery that is easy to download is a big one in today’s ecommerce world. Also being flexible with payment terms is really important for us to be able to offer.”

Meet the winners of this year’s exciting competition; these are the makers set to take the stationery world by storm and shape design trends for the year ahead

L

aunchPad is an essential competition from the team behind London Stationery Show, aimed specifically at finding new talent in the industry, and helping to boost fledgling businesses to break into the market. The competition was first launched in 2017 as a way of encouraging and supporting new companies and products by giving them a platform to showcase their ideas. This year there are five winners, who all have a huge amount of flair and skill, with a variety of amazing products, from greeting cards, to wrapping paper, gifts, study notes and notepads. The products were judged on a number of factors, including what would be of real interest to the industry, the cost, marketability and what design-conscious consumers would love. “We were delighted with the fresh talent that entered this year’s competition – which shows how important LaunchPad is to put brilliant new companies in the spotlight for them to showcase their ideas,” says Ella O'Keefe, London Stationery Show's Head of Marketing. “The LaunchPad winners will get to be face-to-face with retailers and suppliers in the industry, and receive marketing and support from the London Stationery Show. There is no better prize for this year’s five winners who get to appear on the UK’s biggest stationery stage!”

bright and whimsical styles with a retro twist. What to look out for at the show: There is a large range to check out. In particular, Samantha tells us: “The 32-page letter writing set makes the perfect gift for anyone who loves to write.” The set definitely has the wow factor, and even better, it is ecofriendly, too. All paper is FSCcertified, plus the envelopes and keepsake box are recycled.

With a stunning palette of colours and a creative design style, the stationery from Gabi & Gaby is fun and fresh. The range of cards, wrapping paper and notepads are decorated with bold, colourful illustrations and patterns, and the cards have a touch of cute humour, too. T

rends in fashion tend to spill over into architecture and interiors, which often overflows into other areas of product design – and stationery is case in point. The pandemic saw us all looking back to the ‘good old days’ and contemplating those rose-tinted moments from the past. People have always looked back to the golden days because it makes them feel good to do so. Not only that, but consumers are more and more aware of damaging throw-away culture, which is making us long for things made with quality and longevity in mind – just as they would have been made in the past. Instead of racing ahead to find the next big thing, designers are searching the memory box for inspiration on how to create and adapt products for this new era. “The retro aesthetic evokes nostalgia, it takes people back to their childhoods, sparking happy memories of playground games and packed lunches – it all comes flooding back when consumers see the stationery that was in their schoolbags,” says Chloe Danskin, Acting Head of Marketing at Ryman. “So much of modern life is digital now, but you can’t beat the feeling of physically committing pen to paper and writing something down. Plus – technology fails all the time! It’s a safer option to have all your information accessible 24/7 in an address book or diary. The same goes for thank you cards – it’s so much nicer to receive a personal token of someone’s gratitude than a text or email.” Nikki Devine of Studio Pens echoes this sentiment. She says: “Consumers love the trend for products that conjure up nostalgia, because nostalgia brings with it feelings of safety, happiness and belonging. There’s also a sense of being part of the products’ history, and that comes from using products with a story to tell.” With this thought of embracing a brand with longevity in mind, Nikki immediately discusses Kaweco, a name that dates back to 1883. “Each product in the current Kaweco range can be traced back to an old Kaweco design. There is a vast archive of hand-written technical drawings to draw on when creating new products, and some of these have been published as books. Kaweco is where tradition meets innovation; creating new and exciting pens that still retain their nostalgic essence,” she says. “The best example of a nostalgic pen is the Kaweco Sport. It was first launched in 1911 and is manufactured in plastic, aluminium, stainless steel and brass.”

Retro-style home interiors are not a new trend, but it is one that continues to blossom. Recently, we have seen people latch onto the ‘cottage-core’

theme, reflecting an idealised rural life, but we are also seeing more and more people fall in love with the luxe mid-century aesthetic, as well as heritage Scandi looks, which have more of a cool and chic vibe. One company that does this brilliantly is The Dybdahl Co, a Danish firm based just an hour outside of Copenhagen. “We love all things vintage and heritage. Our print and greeting card collections consist of hidden visual gold that we find in rare books, museums, and archives,” says Nicky Rogers Jensen, Wholesale Manager. “Our excellent graphic team of designers believe in their intuition, and their creative process starts by finding images they love and analysing the findings by investigating the graphic qualities, colours and composition. They re-mix, fuse, combine, twist and hybridize the images they love. We build connections between images from different parts of the world and time periods and mix it with our Scandinavian take on things. Mixing old with the new and giving it a sprinkle of Danish style.” We asked Nicky why she thought the vintage STATIONERYMATTERS.NEWS 13

and retro aesthetic trend is so popular at the moment. And what is it that people are connecting with? She tells us: “Our customers enjoy the vintage and classic beauty of many of our prints. The past becomes the present in many modern homes and gives that extra touch of something different and special. Scandinavian design and living are also very much on trend.”

A sense of craft

Even with modern apps and tech we are seeing a shift towards people loving time-honoured craft and artistry – there are thousands of makers on TikTok and Instagram, showing the skills they are learning and what their creative processes are. On TV, we are flooded with amazing shows that reflect this, too, think the Great Pottery Throw Down and The Great British Sewing Bee – this type of nostalgic content is something that is really resonating with viewers right now. We are seeing more people learning to knit and crochet, as well as pick up other hobbies that were popular in times gone by (glass blowing, candle making, screen printing, calligraphy). “Calligraphy, hand lettering and writing are all mindful activities,” says Charlie Stockbridge of Manuscript Pen Company. “Learning the technique is all part of the process, but we try not to get too bogged down in the complexities at the beginning. It is about enjoying the process, experimenting with the writing tools and going on your own creative journey.” “In a digital age where we spend so long on our devices, writing offers a restorative space away from it all. A place to sit back from the everyday scroll and carve out time for oneself. A way to create and be creative in whatever form that may take. Whether it be calligraphy using Manuscript’s dip nibs, a letter to a friend using a luxury Visconti fountain pen, a diary penned by an everyday Centropen handwriting pen or Koh-I-Noor pencil, or parents buying The Lionheart Tales stationery for children on their early learning creative journey.”

Creating keepsakes

Notecards, letter writing, and wonderful thank you notes are all popular products right now – people are taking the time to send physical things rather than just texts and emails. And thankfully, on the trend barometer, E-cards are falling right to the bottom of the pile (did anyone ever actually enjoy getting those?). People want to write letters, and they love receiving them even more. With this idea of having physical products that complement the digital world, we are seeing a rise in popularity for items such as address books and photo albums, too. There is a real desire for keepsake products that can be looked back on and reflected upon. “I think that people want a product that is tangible, something they can hold,

feel and cherish. We all have thousands of photos on our phones, which we can flick through with the swipe of a finger, but these are unwieldy and uncurated. The beauty of making an album is that the photos have been sorted through; each one has been selected, printed, studied again and then placed on a page in a position that you’re happy with,” says Bobby Adams of Be Golden. The company’s products have a host of traditional credentials that give them that quality retro vibe, too. They are locally handmade, produced using time honoured techniques and machinery, but are presented in a contemporary way to make them feel relevant to modern customers. Bobby adds: “With the pandemic, maybe people have come to realise the ephemeral nature of the world we live in. Memories of loved ones and life affirming events need to be recorded so they can be revisited and relived. Looking through a photo album often makes you stop and think. Likewise, with visitor books, its great to flick through to see who has been, what you’ve done, what the weather was like etc. even the simple notion of seeing someone’s handwriting is emotive.”

Every product TELLS A STORY People want to know more about what they are buying; information on brand history, sustainability and product innovation are key to making connections and more sales

M

odern customers are expecting more and more from their retail experience than ever before. The ways we are purchasing and consuming are changing; we are more considered, we expect higher quality and we want to know the background to our purchases – especially those that we see as practical, utilitarian and high quality. Consumers love to hear stories. Background information, history, how the item was made and why. Telling stories to customers helps to tie products in to their own wants and needs, it helps them to see the value in what you are selling, and motivates them to want to buy from you. Sometimes all you will need to do is weave a story based on the item’s benefits. Explain how it was created, the research and attention to

detail that went into its production and how it has been tested. This type of storytelling will satisfy customers’ needs for quality and durability, for example. Other cusomers will fall for the romanticism of a heritage project, or one from a company with a long and rich history. They will buy into the brand and what it represents. Newer businesses have the opportunity to discuss how the product was invented, what gap in the market it fills, how they came up with it. We’re also living in an age where people truly care about how what they are buying is made, and what it is made of. And sometimes the materials that go into things have their own story to tell. Also think about who the people are behind the products – and how can these stories of makers and producers tie into your ideal customers? No matter your product, there will be a story behind it. It is from his travels in India that the founder imported his first formula of shellac, which allowed him to advance the quality of his seals and to acquire a professional reputation. In 1798, he went on to create his famous line of writing inks. The brand has forged various specialities over the years, including premium writing, drawing and calligraphy inks, in addition to a number of decorating waxes. Now part of the Exacompta Clairefontaine group, Jacques Herbin products can be paired with calligraphy products from Brause and social correspondence from G.Lalo.” CUSTOMERS…“The Jacques Herbin name evokes a sense of intense passion and luxurious quality, with the brand appealing to artistic lovers of traditional writing and drawing techniques from across the globe. After originally making a name for himself at the court of King Louis XIV in Versailles, archives show that the Jacques Herbin company supplied ink to the Emperor Napoleon, as well as other historic personalities, such as the writer Victor Hugo. In 2020, the brand celebrated its 350th anniversary and released a range of limited edition inks. We launched in October 2019 and then re-launched after the pandemic hit with a new vision and direction in late 2020. We (Nic and I) met whilst studying at art school and quickly became the best of friends. Our commercial partnership journey began in 1997 when we started our design studio in London (still running to this day). However, we also had a mutual goal of wanting to set up a separate creative publishing platform. We had ideas for the venture over time, but it was way down the line (nearly 20 years) before we were ready to go for it with our creative team. We knew others felt the same way and we set out to create the best pencil sharpener possible, which was joyous to use, can be used forever and, most importantly, will craft the perfect point to any pencil. We launched a Kickstarter campaign for it and took preorders; this catalysed our business and we won a Stationery Award for Høvel in 2019. Odin, my business partner, is from Norway and Høvel means plane in Norwegian, which customers often reference in their decision to purchase. The Høvel is a small symbol of craft for your desk and is loved for this reason. We produce the Høvel in machine polished solid brass. It arrives perfectly polished but patinas with time and use. Green Planet Paper Bishop

by Maddie Bishop, Founder Tell me a short history of the brand? Green Planet Paper was initially launched in April 2020, but had been in development for many months beforehand. My background is in the commercial stationery industry, but I was eager to explore the consumer side of the business, where I was able to be far more creative and have greater control over the products I developed. I am a passionate advocate of eco-friendly living, so creating planet friendly products was top of my agenda. How would you describe your products? Every product we design or sell is highly ecological and environmentally friendly. High quality, low impact on the planet – from sourcing raw materials from the UK, to trying and maintaining the lowest carbon footprint, to discovering the most ecological materials. For instance, many of the cards are made using seed paper – it is stuffed with native wildflower seeds and made in the UK. Another material we use to make our cards from is grass paper – which uses 99% less water in its manufacture than any other on the market. The ribbons we sell are also made from recycled plastic bottles and the envelopes and wrapping paper are made from recycled Kraft paper. Where are the products made? Noble Macmillan

by Hannah Fleming, Head of Production and Marketing Tell me about the brand? Noble Macmillan is quintessentially British. Starting in the early 1980s by Tom Dodd Noble and Adam Macmillan, the grandson of former prime minister Harold Macmillan, the shop still remains in the very mews we started in. Originally known for photo frames and albums, we now have a wide range of games, accessories, stationery and gifts. With the recent acquisition of Walter Newbury Binding, who have been creating beautiful books for over a century, we can now extend our bespoke range. Using the traditional skills of edge gilding, marbling, book binding and sewing, Noble Macmillan focuses on age old craftmanship. Where are the products made? Our stationery is produced in our Dagenham workshop, and we are very proud of our British craftsmanship and the traditional techniques we still use. It is bound in beautiful calfskin leather that we can then personalise with a name, initials or crest to make our products totally unique. Any favourite stationery products? Our most recent collaboration with British designer Sasha Compton. We give 15% of profits to the charity, Smart Works. Smart Works provides high quality interview clothes and interview training to unemployed women in need. Using both Sasha’s ‘Female Dancer’ on the cover, and ‘Every pair is perfect’ to line each book, they are both stylish and make a playful nod to femininity.

Owner & Creator of her eponymous brand Tell me about the brand? I had always found it frustrating buying cards for my children; very few of the children depicted on cards looked like them. I decided to create the kind of greeting cards I wanted to see – featuring black and brown children; that idea quickly grew to notebooks, posters and bookmarks. In May 2021, I launched my brand with 12 characters in six skin tones, and now I have 20 characters in 10 different skin tones. How important is the story behind the brand to your customers? Representation is vital. If you consistently see and receive cards with images of people who look nothing like you, what message are you receiving? That you are not important enough to be depicted? The reinforcement of structural racism through ‘othering’ and the sidelining of non-Eurocentric imagery is so deeply embedded, we often don’t see the many ways it manifests itself. My cards serve as one small way for me to counter this imbalance. Is there a hero product that you can tell us about? My ‘Affirmation’ range is my personal favourite. Every piece has words like ‘smart’, kind’, ‘thoughtful’, ‘determined’ and ‘enough’. The first page in the notebook has seven sentences with affirmative words that need to be completed. The first sentence is “I am awesome because…”. I love this because it encourages the owner to think about the ways they are unique and brilliant.

Once Upon A Tuesday

by Michele Ferron, Founder and Manager Tell me about the brand? Once Upon A Tuesday is a start up brand creating modern paper calendars. A lockdown success story, which is going from strength to strength. After a record first year in 2021, run from our kitchen table, the 2022 calendar sales saw a major growth, establishing the brand as a key ecommerce player in the paper calendar niche. The success is thanks to the brand’s strong design element, offering modern on-trend calendars. The brand is now expanding from the direct-to-consumer market into wholesale. How would you describe your products? I wanted to bring some excitement to the category. Personally, I want everything I bring into my house to be a thing of beauty, whilst also being planet-friendly. I simply couldn’t find any calendars that ticked those boxes, so I created them – and it seems lots of people were looking for modern calendars, too! What should we look out for at London Stationery Show? Once Upon A Tuesday will be launching our new Academic Year and 2023 Calendar collections at London Stationery Show on stand G210. I want to create collections that include calendars that won’t feel out of place in Soho House, or a Berlin art space, but also calendars that you can gift to your granny or a student starting uni. LEUCHTTURM1917

We meet Jonathan Pack of this well-known and loved brand, who tells us about the history of the company and some popular products

S

leek design, quality materials, a dynamic range of styles and an impressive heritage, it’s no surprise that we’ve chosen to focus this issue’s Design Icon feature on Leuchtturm1917. “The company emerged from the KaBe Verlag, founded in 1917 in Aschersleben and the Leuchtturm Albenverlag, founded in 1948 in Hamburg, Germany,” explains the company’s Jonathan Pack. “Both companies specialised in stamp collectors’ items. In 1962, Kurt Stürken joined the company and helped expand it internationally, founding Lighthouse Publications in the USA and Canada.” One of the great things about Leuchtturm1917 is that it’s still run by the Stürken family all these years later, with Axel and Max Stürken at the helm since the 90s. As mentioned, Kurt, their father, started working at the company in the 1960s and became partner in the 1970s. “Kurt still comes to work nearly every day,” says Jonathan.

DETAILS IN FOCUS

With such a vast range of styles and designs on offer today, we wanted to take a brief look back at what started it all off. The first product from Leuchtturm1917 was a black notebook in four different sizes. “It already featured some wellknown Leuchtturm1917 details. The range now consists of 19 beautiful colours and with four different rulings,” says Jonathan. Fast forward from that initial design to what is popular now, Jonathan tells us that the classic notebook in Hardcover Size Medium is one of the bestsellers, although this changes slightly from country to country, with certain colourways. “The brand is offering modern, colourful yet matching products that meet the spirit of the times,” says Jonathan. Now, looking forward. The latest additions to the range are the Drehgriffel Nr. 2 and the notebook size Composition (B5) in Hardcover. “The

Drehgriffel Nr. 2 is a mechanical pencil in the iconic hexagonal design of the Drehgriffel series,” explains Jonathan. “The new Hardcover version of our Composition (B5) notebook is a direct result of the high demand for this modern notebook size and following on from the success of the Softcover B5.”

SPECIAL FOCUS

One of the things we know and adore about Leuchtturm1917 is the great collaborations they have worked on over the years, and the special editions. They are always creative, with bold design but still up keeping the classic and quality style. So what does the future hold in this area? “We are working with different partners to create new special editions,” says Jonathan. “Our customers can be assured that a lot of exciting products are currently in development!”

SUSTAINABILITY We live in a mindful world, where planet-friendly goods are essential. As such, more and more consumers are demanding clarity on the credentials of the items they buy. “Our products are made with FSC-certified paper and are sustainably produced,” explains Jonathan. “We print the pages and covers of our notebooks, planners and sketchbooks with mineral oil-free water-based links and varnishes. Our products also meet the stringent requirements of the EU REACH chemicals regulation, which is based on the rigorous Californian ‘Proposition 65’, a type of continuously updated list to protect drinking water, the environment and people from substances that are hazardous to health.”

There are many amazing collaborations to choose from and it’s easy to see why customers are attracted to the specials – which have a unique and stand out feel. “The Bauhaus line features bold contrasts and design,” explains Jonathan. “Then we have the elegant and refined Monocle edition, both are equally modern and appealing.” Another stand out and unique offering from Leuchtturm1917 is the Bullet Journal, which was developed with Ryder Carroll, the inventor of the Bullet Journal System. “He used our notebooks regularly and approached us with his idea to create a Bullet Journal notebook,” says Jonathan. “His system is simple but effective and fits perfectly to our brand. Since this product has such a huge fan community, we have developed more colours over the years and improved the product regularly together with the BuJo-Community to meet the needs of our users.”

HERO PRODUCT

In terms of a hero product, or one that the company is best known for, where should we look? “It is difficult to narrow this down to just one product. Leuchtturm1917 is known for its variety of highquality products!” says Jonathan. “Probably the most iconic and well known is the black notebook in Medium A5 and our Drehgriffel Nr. 1, a writing instrument that has won many design awards.”

HUNTER PAPER CO We meet Emma Johnston who tells us about her dynamic retail company, as well as her thriving letterpress business

H

unter Paper Co. has been operating for around eight years. It is a luxury stationery brand based in Northern Ireland, designing and producing a range of greetings cards and stationery, with a shop in Belfast and a thriving online store. The physical and online shop offer a carefully curated selection of the best products from around the world, as well as Hunter Paper Co.’s signature letterpress creations. The business comprises both a retail and wholesale element. Emma originally started out by selling her crafts – prints and cards – at local markets after graduating with an illustration degree. “I then ventured into wholesale, selling my products to shops, which grew the business really quickly and allowed our brand to be stocked in shops around the world,” she says. “Although my husband was always helping out behind the scenes, he officially came on board during the pandemic and we started buying other stationery items to complement our own brand, and building our ecommerce side of the business. In 2021, a shop unit came up in our neighbourhood; we

knew it was the perfect fit. We opened our doors in October and haven’t looked back!” So, what’s it like to both run a physical store and an online business? “Since we’ve opened the shop it’s been great!” says Emma. “We’ve seen an increased interest online, as well as the shop being busy. It’s also really streamlined our order processing – having our couriers collect from the shop and allowing us to work on online orders while also serving customers in the shop. We love seeing repeat customers’ names pop up in our online orders, and then meeting them in person when they click and collect their order!”

What’s in store…

Emma tells us that she has always had a love of stationery – she recalls the joy of having a new collection at the beginning of the school year. “As I started to study design and illustration I fell in love with print making and the tactility of letterpress,” she says. “From then on it was clear I had to get my own press and produce my own stationery.” As a large portion of the shop comprises the Hunter Paper Co. products, Emma carefully

selects brands and items that will fit in with the range and aesthetic. “It must be something we’d imagine having on our own desk,” she says. “We also ask ‘is it useful?’ We want our customers to find a beautiful item that they will use regularly and will brighten their day.” We dig a little deeper to find out what is doing well and is popular with customers. Emma tells us that the range of Kaweco pens have been, and continue to be, really popular since the shop opened. She also tells us that occasions are popular depending on the time of year – so Mother’s Day cards and candles, for example.

Letterpress

For its own line, Hunter Paper Co. creates a range of greetings cards, art prints, note cards and list pads on the letterpresses. Emma also works with UK-based digital printers to create a selection of gift wrap, and a family run bookmakers to create a collection of lay flat notebooks. Emma tells us that she adores the feeling of completing every new design on the letterpress – and this love is clear in the gorgeous designs and quality of the products. Her love of creating and craft led her to self-teach the art of the letterpress – her learnings came from Google, YouTube and, she admits, a great deal of trial and error. “I bought my first press on eBay on a little bit of optimism and naivety, hoping I could figure it out once it arrived,” she says. Emma got engrossed in it and honed her skills – then launched the letterpress range a few months later. “You can design something on paper, or digitally, but until it runs off the press for the first

time you don’t fully know how it will look! The process is so hands on from mixing the colours, to making adjustments on the press and running the press. When the final product is in your hand, you never tire of the tactility of the deep impression of the print on the paper.”

BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN

As both retailer and supplier, what have you learned about what makes a good supplier? “Our retailer relationships have always been really important to us, and we love building a relationship with our wholesale customers and getting to know them personally. As the supplier, it is great to be comfortable asking what’s working well for our retailers and if there are any gaps in their range when we’re developing new products. Seeing both sides of the coin has definitely helped us to refine our own wholesale offering. Offering good imagery that is easy to download is a big one in today’s ecommerce world. Also being flexible with payment terms is really important for us to be able to offer.”

We go shopping with David Cole of Pen Heaven to find out about the latest trends and review what’s popular with consumers right now…

F

ounded in 2008, Pen Heaven was set up to offer customers a comprehensive range of writing instruments and leather journals, providing in-house engraving and embossing. The online shop is a specialist in classic brands such as Parker, Cross and Lamy, but also boasts some more unusual and hard-to-find items, such as the Japanese hand painted Platinum Range, Italian calligraphy sets and the design focused Worther brand. “My father and I started the company as we both have a deep passion for a product that keeps alive a traditional art,” says owner David Cole. “This combined with a love of retail, and the incredible shopping experience you can create with technology and online, was our motivation for Pen Heaven. We started at a time when online was really entering the mainstream, so it was all very new and exciting.”

TRENDS

We ask David about current trends and what consumers are enjoying right now. Is there a particular type of pen that is doing well at the moment? And what about in terms of colour or material? He explains that in the main, customers have very broad tastes, and the shop offers a wide set of brands to cater for this. David tells us that some of the big names are ever popular, such as Parker for its distinguished and classical look, and Lamy for its modern and minimalist approach. He explains that colourways are still quite traditional, with stealth black being as popular as ever, along with rose gold. “Limited edition colours are also desired, with many selling out rapidly,” says David. “Many brands are increasingly matching trim colour to body colour to offer a uniform, solid colour pen.” Bespoke making is still very popular, and something that customers often ask for. “We spotted a niche with personalisation, so invested in our own embossing and engraving equipment,” says David. “This means we can offer this extra

service on nearly all products, with a very quick turnaround time.” In terms of pen type, David tells us: “We have seen the largest growth in fountain pens. I believe that trends reflect how people appreciate the connection a fountain pen has to older times when the pace of life was slower – it is an antidote to the modern digital world.” David reflects that this popularity has to do with its old-school vibe and how it conjures up a feeling of nostalgia to handwriting. “We have noticed that fountain pens with an in-built piston filling mechanism are in high demand,” he says. “Consumers are increasingly concerned around minimising waste, and these pens are a convenient way of dispensing with the need for single use cartridges. They also give more flexibility on colours of ink, with thousands available.” He tells us that shoppers are becoming a lot more sophisticated when it comes to different nib sizes, too. “People want to put personality into writing and there are so many exotic nib sizes available now, offering very fine writing, calligraphy, music nibs, flexi nibs, nibs for left handers, wet nibs, the list goes on,” he explains. “Left handers are becoming more vocal about a nib that will suit them. Lamy offers a dedicated left handed nib.”

Digging a little deeper than the consumer trends, what we really want to know is about David’s specific favourite. We want to know what he loves about the pen and what he thinks makes it so special. “I’d have to say the TWSBI Eco,” he says. “Excellent value, it has a distinctive demonstrator (see through) design and in-built piston-fill mechanism that means less waste and allows the user to switch between a huge range of ink colours. A good choice of nib sizes are available, too, all of which have really good ink flow that offers a smooth writing experience. ontent marketing is one of the most powerful things you can spend time on as a business owner, but it’s often one of the first things to slip off our To Do Lists when things get busy. Part of my job as a creative consultant is to get the creatives I work with excited about creating content again, so that they can thrive in their work and find their dream customers. But how do we do that? I’m here today with a few tips to get you started. So, first let’s clarify what content marketing actually means. Content marketing is a strategy that focuses on creating valuable and relevant content for a specific audience (via things like social media, blogs, video, email or podcasts), to help turn strangers into customers. There are a couple of reasons why I believe content marketing is one of the most valuable things small business owners could focus on, the first of which is that it’s a brilliant way to get organic growth. The more valuable and relevant content you create for your business, the less your business has to rely on paid advertising to get sales, which for small businesses on a budget is a game changer! The second reason content marketing is so important, is that it helps to build trust and loyalty with your audience, and it’s a way you can guide them through the journey of first discovering you, to buying from you, to becoming raving fans of your work. Knowing content is important for your business is one thing, but how do you get it working for you, in a way that doesn’t suck up all of your time? Try these tips to maximise the content you’re creating for your business: Be realistic on how much you’re able to post consistently – there’s no point in being super

ambitious to start off with, only to not be able to keep up with your content schedule! Prioritise the platforms that your ideal customers hang out on most. You don’t need to be EVERYWHERE for your brand, but if you pick the right platforms for your audience, you’ll get more out of the time you’re putting in. Pick four or five core categories of content that you can cover regularly in your business, and cycle through them consistently. For a stationery brand, an example of that could look like: Planning and organisation tips, customer photos, behind the scenes and gift guides. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose! You don’t have to come up with a new idea every time you go to post a new piece of content. You can repurpose ideas across platforms, content formats, and you can even directly repost your old posts to give them new life! Squeeze every last drop out of each of your ideas, and you’ll find that your content marketing strategy will be doing much more for you. For me, one of the things that helps business owners stay on top of their content creation, is finding ways to have fun with it! STOCK MANAGEMENT We take a look at one of Catherine Erdly’s Golden Rules of stock management – ordering the right amount

I

’m very passionate about stock management because I believe it is one of the most overlooked, yet most important, skills for product business owners to learn. Your stock is your biggest expense and that is reason enough for you to have an ongoing focus on your stock management. Managing your stock well will put you in control of your business. You need to focus on your stock – it is literally make or break for product business owners. It’s no secret that the majority of businesses that fail run into financial problems usually caused by poor stock control.

THE RIGHT AMOUNT

As a retail business, your stock is your most valuable asset. Almost certainly, it’s also your

biggest expense, and if you look back at where most of your money has gone, your stock will make up the bulk of your expenditure. Too much stock means too much cash tied up in your business. As a business, reducing how much stock you are carrying at any one time is crucial to keeping your cash flow healthy. Imagine that your stock is not product, but a pile of cash. Avoid having too much “cash” sitting around not working in your business. To do this, you’ll need to be actively managing your stock.

STRIKE A BALANCE

The biggest challenge in retail is working out how much stock to have in your business so that you don’t miss out on sales, while at the same time keeping your stock under control. It is not an easy

balance to strike, and even big retailers that have access to forecasting systems and trained analysts have to manage this really carefully. How do you work out how much to buy? One of the most common questions I get asked is how to work out how many of each product to buy. You’ve identified what products that you want to have and you’re excited to bring them into the business. Now you are at the point where you have to decide how many.

SET A BUDGET

Before you decide on individual quantities for each item, first get clear about how much money you have available to spend on new stock. In retail businesses, this amount is known as “open to buy” or OTB. Big businesses calculate their OTB by looking at forecast sales and how much stock the business is prepared to carry, but you may make your decision based on the cash you have available to you at the time. Set yourself a budget – either for each month, or for a whole season. Each product that you buy will come out of this budget, so you’ll need to get clear on your number, and keep it close at hand when you are ordering products to avoid going over.

WORKING OUT THE QUANTITIES

There are three main factors that affect the quantity: 1 How many will you sell on average per week? If you are re-ordering a product that you already sell, you can just look at past sales history for this information. Ideally, look at a minimum of four weeks of sales to get an average weekly sales number. If you have not sold this item before, look at what you typically sell on similar items. For example, you are bringing in a new lampshade. How many lights and lampshades do you typically sell in your existing stock? The big mistake that people make at this stage is assuming that every item is going to become a best seller. If you have 15 lampshades in stock, and 14 of them sell at a rate of 1 a week, and one sells 5 a week, don’t assume immediately that your new lampshade will match the rate of the best seller. And if you don’t have ANY sales history and are just starting out, start by being as realistic as you possibly can. It takes time to gain traction. The average website converts at 2%, which will mean that you have to drive at least 50 people to your website before one person buys. How long do you think it will take to generate enough traffic to get your sales moving? 2 How long do you want to have the product in stock for? Once you have worked out how many you think you are going to sell per week, multiply that by the number of weeks you want to stock the product for. If you change your stock twice a year, you won’t want the stock for more than 26 weeks. And if you are buying seasonal product, for

example Christmas ornaments, make sure you only buy enough to cover you for the weeks running up to that season. As an example, imagine you are buying a new scented candle. Your current scented candles sell at around three per week. You want to change your candle display four times a year, so you decide to only buy enough for 13 weeks. Ideally then you would buy 39 candles (13 weeks x an average of three per week). 3 How quickly can you get more if you sell out? Let’s say you work out you need 39 candles. However, the candle supplier is very flexible and can get you more stock within two weeks. Now you don’t have to buy all 39 candles up front. In fact, you could buy just enough to cover you for two weeks, or six candles, rather than committing to all 39. But, if the candle supplier was importing their stock and took 12 weeks to get you more, then you would need to buy enough stock to cover you for that whole 12 weeks. And what if buying more gets me a better price? It is very tempting to buy larger quantities to take advantage of better prices. However, I would not advise you to buy more than you honestly think you can sell. Yes, each item will be more profitable, but if you get stuck with more stock than you can actually get through, it will quickly clog up your cash flow and cause major issues. If you really can’t make it work with smaller quantities, ask your suppliers if you can give them a commitment to buy that quantity, perhaps over a longer period of time, for example a year. Not everyone will agree to this, but it’s worth asking.

REFER BACK TO YOUR BUDGET

If you are purchasing several items at once, you may find that you run through these numbers and then find that you are way over your budget. Again, you do have to be strict with yourself at this point, and look at where you can cut back on quantities, or even drop a couple of lines in order to come in to budget. Want to free up more money to bring in all that great stock you are thinking about? Then that’s about clearing out stock that isn’t working for you – a topic for another time!

knowing where to start. A lot of people think PR is just about getting media coverage in a magazine or paper, but there are so many other ways that you can get your business talked about. It could be an influencer partnership, a collaboration with a well-aligned partner, a talk that helps to position you as an expert, an event within your local area that puts you in front of your target client, a podcast interview or even entering awards. I’d encourage you to have a think about the different ways you can get your business talked about – start by writing a list and you’ll probably find that there are more ways than you’d realised.

Can you do it yourself?

Know your audience

Understanding who your target audience is before you start is the key to doing effective PR. It’s really important to remember that you aren’t your audience. Just because you don’t read particular magazines, or spend your time on social media doesn’t mean that your potential customers don’t either. Do your research, what makes your customers specific to you? Get to know them, know what media they are into, where they’re hanging out online, what areas are they coming from, what other brands and shops they’re into. This will really help you to be targeted in your efforts trying to reach them and it means that you won’t waste time on things that aren’t going to help shift the dial for your business.

I’m on a mission to empower as many small businesses as I can to do their own PR – you don’t have to spend big budgets on PR agencies these days to create conversations around your business. It’s so important for small businesses to stay relevant and visible to their prospective clients and being able to promote yourself is key to helping your business grow and thrive.

Telling your story

In an industry where there’s a lot of competition, being able to tell your unique story and highlight your point of difference is key to standing out from the crowd. It might be your exclusive collection of British-designed products, it might be your focus on the cool or the quirky, or your sustainability or vintage edge. You may have great value offerings or a bespoke service for personalisation that no one else does. Whatever makes you unique is what you want to focus on to create a point of difference and help you to tell your story.

Get in the right mindset

businesses and the common themes I see that stop people from starting are a lack of knowledge about where to begin and a lack of confidence and fear of rejection. If you’re telling yourself you can’t then you definitely won’t. Start by reframing the way you talk to yourself. Telling yourself you can is the catalyst to putting yourself out there and working on a positive mindset is key to making it happen. Fear of someone saying no can put us off having the conversation in the first place. But what if they say yes?

aunchPad is an essential competition from the team behind London Stationery Show, aimed specifically at finding new talent in the industry, and helping to boost fledgling businesses to break into the market. The competition was first launched in 2017 as a way of encouraging and supporting new companies and products by giving them a platform to showcase their ideas. Okey Dokey Design

Okey Dokey Design is a premium, eco-friendly stationery company specialising in quirky writing paper and colourful paper gifts. Everything is illustrated, designed and manufactured by owner Samantha from her home studio. The range was inspired by the love of letter writing and personal communications, and the products are specifically created to offer

bright and whimsical styles with a retro twist. What to look out for at the show: There is a large range to check out. What to look out for at the show: This is a brand that is all about representation, and we adore the unique illustrations born from reimagined Tarot card imagery. Emma says: “Our main focus as a brand is to create gender neutral, diversity focussed collections of greeting cards that appeal to buyers looking for a more modern approach to card sending.”

Gabi & Gaby

With a stunning palette of colours and a creative design style, the stationery from Gabi & Gaby is fun and fresh. The range of cards, wrapping paper and notepads are decorated with bold, colourful illustrations and patterns, and the cards have a touch of cute humour, too. In particular, the birthday cards stand out; there is a great selection to choose from – from formal to funny. What to look out for at the show: Eco-friendly and fun cards and stationery that stands out on the shelf. Gabi describes her styles as: “A fresh approach to traditional concepts.” Take a close look at the range of wrapping paper, too, which is bright and fun, and would be perfect for any occasion from birthdays to seasonal celebrations and everything in between. Susannah Bleasby Fine Art

Artist Susannah Bleasby has a talent for creating pieces that are joyful and full of colour. Her art is both modern and pretty, with gorgeous shapes and elements taken from nature, as well as abstract forms that play with bold and bright tones. As a lifelong letter writer, Susannah has recently started creating greeting cards – ideal for a wider audience to share her love of colour. What to look out for at the show: The artist will have a variety of cards on display. What will the audience adore? The artist tells us: “The images are uplifting and full of hope, peaceful yet very alive, and painted with joy that is felt through the brushstrokes.” All cards are printed in the UK using high quality FSC 300gsm board and packaged without plastic.

The Notes Guide

We love that three sisters founded The Notes Guide. The products – which look and feel beautiful – have been created with students in mind; the sisters studied Medicine, Pharmacy and Computer Science. They found that it was often difficult to structure their notes, so decided to design and create notepads and flashcards to aid students. They are clear, concise and cover all of the required content. What to look out for at the show: Designed by students for students, the flashcards are degree-specific. The sisters tell us: “This is a unique product that has been carefully curated by students currently on the relevant degrees. When you’re not at London Stationery Show, get to know the surrounding area, it’s one of the best places to spend time in London

T

he Business Design Centre is set in the heart of Angel, Islington. It’s a brilliant part of London, full of the capital’s famous hustle and bustle – but has its own unique large-villagevibe, too. The streets are lined with well-known shops and independents, coffee houses, cafes, bars and restaurants. It’s no surprise that it’s one of the most popular postcodes in the city – and a brilliant district to spend time in. The Business Design Centre is located within easy walking distance of Angel Underground Station on the Northern Line, and Highbury & Islington Station, which has the Victoria Line on the Underground, is linked to the Overground network and has mainline trains, too. Even better, the bus network serves this part of town well, there are 12 different routes leading there. Or, if you are planning to drive, there is a 237-space car park on-site – but book your spot ahead of time. When you’re not at the exhibition and are looking for somewhere to refuel or relax and unwind, you couldn’t be in a better location. Upper Street is lined with places to shop, eat and drink. There is an impressive choice of cinemas, theatres (including the famous Sadler’s Wells) and music venues within walking distance of the show.

There is even a gallery – The Estorick Collection – which has a selection of modern Italian art, set in a gorgeous grade-II listed townhouse. For a delicious lunch head to Brother Marcus; it has a selection of tasty eastern Mediterranean dishes, a mixture of mezze and mains. Or for the best deli of your life, walk over to Ottolenghi where you can take your pick of the glorious counter selection of salads and sides. For dinner, Trullo has some of the best pasta dishes in town, or try out Prawn on the Lawn – which, as the name suggests, is a fish lover's dream. If you don’t want to stray too far from work life, why not go and get inspired by some of the best independent shops in the UK? Angel is home to so many. Present & Correct is possibly one of the most famous stationery shops in London, with a cult following that adore the shop’s curated range of vintage stationery and modern pieces that embrace that quality retro vibe. The shop is so beautifully presented and laid-out that you could spend hours admiring the small space. Another shop that's brimming with beautiful pieces is Twentytwentyone, which has its roots in original and vintage design from the 20th century. Set over two floors, it is an interior designer’s haven, filled with furniture, homewares, accessories, ceramics and more.

9 1 I use pencils everyday to mark up magazine proofs – and I always snap the lead... but not on this! Hightide Penco Prime Timber Pencil 2 For the past few years I have bought my diary from Papier – I like the range of options and being able to personalise it. This year I chose the Leather Meadow Diary in Burgundy 3 I am a big fan of Scandi styling, and pretty much all of the creations from this brand – this chunky clip is particularly handy. Normann Copenhagen DF Paper Clamp in Yellow. 4 This is such lovely paper to write on, and the elastic strap stops the pages crumpling when it’s chucked in my bag at the end of the day. Pink Standard Issue No.3 Notebook. 5 I’ve just had to buy a new pair of these scissors as my mum has nabbed my original pair. It feels like they stay sharp forever, they are super lightweight and comfy to use, even after cutting out stars for your kids for hours on end… Tools to Live By 6.5” Scissors in Black. 6 These highlighters come in eight gorgeous pastel colours – they add a flash of colour where I need it, but aren’t overpowering (and they don’t smudge!) Stabilo Swing Cool Pastel Edition Highlighters 7 I won’t lie, I bought this stapler purely based on its looks, and no surprise, it is from a lovely Danish brand. Monograph Stapler in Green. 8 It is no secret that I am a fan of dogs, so these adorable paper clips were an easy purchase for me. They are soft and tactile too, so they don’t mark or ruin photos if you’re attaching them in your notebook. Midori P51 Dog Clips. 9 This was a birthday present from my father in law – he knows I like writing with a fountain pen. I adore the weight and chunky diameter. Kaweco Brass Sport Fountain Pen.
