WELCOME...
…to our exciting Summer issue of Progressive Tableware Worldwide.
Like so many of you, we’re all looking forward to the trade show season. Yes, our feet will hurt, yes, we will drink too much coffee (and something a bit stronger too!), but how great is to be back and meeting in person? Nothing beats seeing people face-to-face, along with the newest tableware launches.
This issue we’re shining the spotlight on one of the world’s largest international trade fairs for consumer goods: Ambiente. After an enforced two-year break, Ambiente is back and will open its doors to visitors at Messe Frankfurt from 3 – 7 February.
PTW caught up with Thomas Kastl, Director for Dining for Ambiente, who had this to say: “After a two-year enforced break, retailers are yearning more than ever for a physical live experience. In the international fairs we have had in Frankfurt already, we have seen a very high level of participation by international buyers. And we expect the same at Ambiente 2023.” Read the full interview with Thomas on pages 10-11.
Staying with Ambiente, in our round table (page 1417) we chatted to a whole host of exhibitors and buyers who will be making the journey to Frankfurt in February to get their views on the return of the show. As you can expect, they’re all very excited to be back.
Claire Budgen from Lifestyle Brands sums up the feeling quite well when she says: “It seems with all the negative press, this is something we all need. To be out of the office, meeting our international partners once
again, discussing how despite all of the economic challenges, we can press ahead and convert fantastic innovation, creativity and commercialism into sales.” Our cover star this issue is Stölzle Lausitz, one of the leading drinking glass manufacturers worldwide. Stölzle Lausitz is one of the few glass manufacturers that has mastered the manufacturing process to produce a one-piece stem and bowl. The result is a machine-made glass with the features and elegance of mouth-blown glassware. Export manager, Jan Zschiesche shares with us on page 22-23 some of the glassware trends to look out for as well as new collections to see at Ambiente.
Elsewhere in the issue, on page 41, fresh from winning the Excellence in Housewares Eco Award last October, we hear all about Denby’s amazing sustainability initiatives, which include recycling 100,000 litres of glaze annually and its own water treatment plant.
On page 25 we’ve got an interview with Alex Yakovlev, founder of Samura, a market leader in knife manufacturing and design. And of course, we’ve got all the newest products, starting on page 31 with six pages jam-packed with all the new releases for 2023.
But first, catch up with all the latest industry news and views on pages 7-9. And hopefully we’ll see most of you at the upcoming fairs. We’ll be covering Ambiente, Spring Fair, The Inspired Home Show and the INDX Homewares Show.
Enjoy the issue!

Vidivi focuses on brand awareness
Italian glassware company, Vidivi (part of the Cerve group of companies) recently launched its new website, showcasing its extensive glassware collections. It is part of a focus to increase brand awareness over 2023.
As part of this programme, all Vidivi pieces will be laser marked with its logo to make them always recognizable. The company is also looking to collaborate with personalities from the cooking world to further promote the brand. And there is a new shop soon to open in Austria.
New year, new look for Grunwerg
It’s out with the old and in with the new for Grunwerg with the unveiling of its new loog. The new look pays homage to the company’s heritage and roots in Sheffield.
Sheffield is known as the home of British steel and Grunwerg is proud to be part of the local community. Its products were manufactured in the UK until the late 1970s and the design team are still based in the Sheffield area.
The key colourways and design attributes draw inspiration from red brickwork and steel girders of Sheffield in days gone past. The text on the new logo is furnace black, drawing inspiration from the coal and furnaces used to forge steel. The logo also includes a White Rose of York flower to symbolise Grunwerg’s Yorkshire roots. “The re-brand gives us the opportunity to further develop the enviable reputation that we’ve built with brands such as Global, Vektra and Pioneer,” says director, Ben Grunwerg. “With our new look comes a new tone of voice and you will be seeing a more informal side to Grunwerg. We want to engage with our customers on a more relaxed level and hope to become a well known and loved household brand in our own right.”
The e-commerce website now encompasses the new branding and soon the newly developed trade website will follow suit.
Japanese-inspired tableware for China Airlines
Travelers enjoying Premium Business Class/Business Class on China Airlines’ Japan route, will be served an exquisite Japanese food feast presented on exclusive new tableware jointly designed by JIA and China Airlines. The design inspiration for this latest collaboration originates from the traditional lacquerware and gold lacquer crafts of Japan. Adopting a seasonal theme, the designs feature the cherry blossoms of the spring, fireworks in summer, the red leaves of autumn, and the fun of the winter snows. The new bowls incorporate motifs based on the four seasons of Japan with the purpose to experience the beauty of all seasons.
Wilmax launches video for its Monolith collection
Wilmax has introduced a new YouTube video for its Monolith porcelain collection. This collection is inspired by nature, with the black, white, and sand coloured vitrified porcelain tableware covered with matt glaze, resembling the texture of natural stone.
The video shows how each colour has been inspired by natural elements: black reflect natural slate, sand dishes bring to mind hot dunes in the desert. And white combines the stylish look of natural stone with the clean elegance of white.
Monolith encompasses a wide range of shapes: rectangular, square, and round plates for serving aperitifs and main courses, salad bowls, serving dishes, and many more.

World-class speakers at the HoReCa Academy
at Ambiente
In 2023, Ambiente will once again place the topic of hospitality in the spotlight of the world's leading trade fair, bundled in one hall – this time in Hall 11.0 – as well as within the framework of the HoReCa Academy.
The HoReCa Academy is not only a place for sharing knowledge, but also offers ample space for discussions – both with the speakers and with industry participants present. These experts include Hanni Rützler, Dr. Sascha Peters and Pierre Nierhaus.
As a trend researcher with her multidisciplinary approach to questions of food and drink culture, Hanni Rützler has made a name for herself far beyond the German-speaking world, and not just since her legendary tasting of the first in-vitro burger in London in 2013, which was broadcast live around the world. What sets her apart is her overarching view of the changes in our food culture, her interest in new developments, and at the same time her ability to perceive and locate even more subtle changes. At the HoReCa Academy, she will speak about the food trends of the future.
In his presentation Circular Materials for Future Dining, Dr. Sascha Peters talks about material developments based on organic residues. This also involves alternatives for energy-intensive materials in the field of tableware.
Pierre Nierhaus, the hospitality expert known for his international trend expeditions, will be speaking at Ambiente about current developments in the food and beverage and tabletop sectors. He will also be talking about how clear concepts and clear profiles are the basis for successful restaurants and bars.
Portmeirion Group reports strong sales
Portmeirion Group expects FY22 pre-tax profit to be 10% above the prior year, and now ahead of 2019 levels, with improved operating margins and in line with market expectations.
Mike Raybould, chief executive, commented: “I am delighted with our continued progress particularly given the much tougher wider economic environment. The sales outperformance benefits from the retranslation of US dollar sales at a lower rate (which benefits revenue but not profitability) and also a stronger than expected seasonal trading performance in our US market and continued momentum in South Korea. Our highly experienced teams continue to manage costs and successfully navigate the challenges of global supply chain disruption and ongoing effects of the war in Ukraine.”
Dartington Crystal to speak on sustainability panel at Spring Fair
Made in Britain is organising and hosting a sustainability panel event at Spring Fair 2023 on 5 February. The panel, entitled ‘Delivering the sustainability message – reaching buyers, retailers, and consumers’, will be moderated by Made in Britain ceo John Pearce, with speakers from Made in Britain’s community of member companies.
The trade association brings together British SME manufacturers, united by the licensed use of the Made in Britain registered, collective mark and provides support for them in achieving their sustainability goals.
Nicola Meadows, portfolio director, Spring Fair, Autumn Fair and Moda, Hyve Group, commented: “We are delighted to have Made in Britain’s ceo John Pearce, leading a panel on sustainability at Spring Fair 2023. Bringing together highly reputable British manufacturers to examine the latest innovations in sustainability messaging, as businesses step up to the increased demand from buyers, retailers and consumers for information about the environmental impact of goods.”
Warren Gell, global commercial director at Dartington Crystal, and Made in Britain board member, added:“Dartington have been handcrafting crystal products in the UK since 1967. The ethos of the brand is British Made, with skills handed down through generations of craftspeople in Devon. By making products that are built to last, they are both desirable and sustainable.”
The panel will take place at 1.20pm on Sunday 5 February, 2023 at Spring Fair at the NEC, Birmingham.
Ambiente is back
After an enforced two-year break, Ambiente is back and will open its doors to visitors at Messe Frankfurt from 3 – 7 February. Director Ambiente Dining, Thomas Kastl talks to Progressive Tableware Worldwide about being back and what visitors can expect this year.
Ambiente is one of the largest international trade fairs for consumer goods, bringing together buyers and suppliers from all over the world for five days and one man in particular is very excited to be back. Thomas Kastl is the Director for Dining for Ambiente and says: “Personal exchange is more important than ever at the moment. There is a great sense of euphoria among the exhibitors who will be at Ambiente 2023. They are full of anticipation.”
Thomas continues: “Ambiente is simply the world's biggest consumer-goods fair where exhibitors want to show their new products. They are looking forward to having this fair again as a contact platform, especially internationally.”
The fair will look a little different from when it was last staged in 2020, with three shows now coming under the one roof: Ambiente, Christmasworld and Creativeworld. “The newly created combination of three successful leading fairs in all halls of the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre combines their strengths and offers an unprecedented, simultaneously available and future-oriented product range in terms of quality and quantity,” says Thomas.
With this new arrangement, retailers will benefit from an incomparable crossover of product groups, themes, segments, and synergies - both between the product groups and between exhibitors and visitors.
For five days, Frankfurt will become the centre
Spotlight on: Digital extension
Visitors can participate physically, hybrid or purely digitally via the online platform digital extensions, parallel to the live trade fairs on site. This means that they can be there live as well as network online before, during and after the fair. A mobile app gives visitors an overview of the exhibition grounds, access to the exhibitor and product search, as well as news and highlights of the event.
“Exhibitors and visitors can also keep up to date online when the fair is not being held with our knowledge platform Conzoom Solutions or the digital marketplace nmedia.hub, which extends the fair to 365 days a year,” says Thomas. “These two online platforms are indispensable in the current era. The future is an efficient mix of live and digital, the pandemic period has clearly shown us that. The personal encounter at our trade fairs remains irreplaceable. At the same time, however, we are consistently expanding our additional digital offers and thus creating further added value for our customers.”
of the global ordering season. “We will present the hottest trends and make the global meta trends visible and tangible,” says Thomas. “Frankfurt will be the onestop shop for the global consumer goods world. And best of all: visitors only need one ticket to visit all the trade fairs.”
Given the global back drop of economic uncertainty and rising costs of energy there will still be around 4,500 exhibitors combined at the three shows, with around 1,770 in the Dining area.
“The Dining area at Ambiente is the big stage for everything that makes cooking and household chores easier and eating more enjoyable,” says Thomas.
“From 2023 on, we will be presenting this segment in its entirety in the West Area in Halls 8 to 12. In doing so, we have aligned the new structure to the realities
of the market. In the last few years in particular, a number of new, major themes have developed. For example, areas such as baking, storage containers and drink bottles have become much more important. These products are found together in the new structure.”
Table and Table Select has a new home in Hall 12 and 12.1, with a wide range of glass, porcelain and ceramic exhibitors such as Cristal de Paris, Dibbern, Güral, Pasabahce with the Nude brand, Colony with the Portmerion brand, Robbe & Berking, Rosenthal, Wächtersbach and Val do Sol Ceramicas.
HoReCa is in Hall 11 with exhibitors such as BHS Tabletop, KAR Porselen, RAK, Serax, Steelite and Villeroy & Boch Hospitality.
Cook & Cut is in Hall 8, Kitchen, Accessories & Baking in Hall 9 alongside Clean Home and Top Deals. And Global Sourcing is in Hall 10. The short distances between the strongly interconnected product ranges bring great synergy effects for buyers.
The Conzoom Solutions Academy and HoReCa Academy both return to Ambiente with a jam-packed programme of speakers across all five days. The Conzoom Solutions Academy offers important industry knowledge on new perspectives and convincing best practices with exciting lectures. The focus is on trends, but also on current topics such as the influence of globalisation, digitalisation and climate change on the consumer goods industry. Experts from a wide range of disciplines will discuss the challenges facing the retail sector on the lecture stages and provide answers and assistance tips for the point of sale of tomorrow.
The HoReCa Academy brings visitors up to date with the latest developments and international trends around the theme of hospitality. Expert lectures explore what will be important tomorrow in this
dynamic segment, from innovative gastronomy concepts to growth opportunities.
Thomas also urges visitors not to miss the special presentation, Solutions, in Galleria 1. “The renowned London industrial designer Sebastian Bergne has selected a range of products with particular emphasis on the aesthetic compatibility of function and design.”
And although the organisers can not predict the visitor numbers, registrations so far look promising according to Thomas: “After a two-year enforced break, retailers are yearning more than ever for a physical live experience. In the international fairs we have had in Frankfurt already, we have seen a very high level of participation by international buyers. And we expect the same at Ambiente 2023.”
Spotlight on: Sustainability
Sustainability is the trend that is not only on everyone's lips, but is also reflected in all areas at Ambiente.
Thomas says: “In the dining area, for example, we see that suppliers are replacing plastic in such a way that it is fully recyclable. In the out-of-home sector, hardly any non-sustainable plastics or plastics are used. Many things are changing.”
Sustainability is highlighted by the Ethical Style by Ambiente programme, which shows suppliers with sustainable product ranges. Exhibitors can display special labelling on their stand and in the exhibitor profile in the online exhibitor search, so that visitors to the fair can find these products easily.
“We also have new Ethical Style Spots on the exhibition grounds, which put the spotlight on sustainable products in all their diversity,” says Thomas.
“For Ambiente Dining, one such spot can be found in Galleria 0. I also highly recommend the 'Circular Materials in Future Dining' exhibition. In the special area in Hall 11.0 in the North Foyer, Dr. Sascha Peters will be staging material developments based on organic residues or alternatives for energy-intensive materials in the field of tableware. There is a lot going on here and a lot to discover.”

Claire Budgen, marketing director, Lifestyle Brands
“Now Christmas has passed, everyone seems to be talking Ambiente. And excitedly. It seems with all the negative press, this is something we all need. To be out of the office, meeting our international partners once again, discussing how despite all of the economic challenges, we can press ahead and convert fantastic innovation, creativity and commercialism into sales.
The start of the selling year is always an exciting time. We get to reveal everything we have been working on, alongside unveiling our plans for future launches and getting an initial reaction. Digital alternatives are all well and good but there is nothing like meeting people in person and discussing a tangible product. Putting products into buyers hands and seeing their reaction is always a highlight. That’s why we’re also hosting an open showroom event in our Birmingham showroom to coincide with Spring Fair.
This year we will be showcasing our feature brands, MasterClass, KitchenAid, La Cafetiere, London Pottery and Chef’n with flagship product launches in many. In addition, there will be our launch of S’well. Officially voted a Coolbrand by a panel of influencers and designers, S’well’s line up offers a fresh take on the original hydration bottle and extends the on-the-go story backed by S’wells brand status. We’ll also be showcasing our new tabletop collections under the Mikasa brand. A totally fresh take on lifestyle living, this is one not to miss.
And of course, we’ll be demo’ing like mad with our on-stand chef, ready to show all our valued national and international partners what not only looks great but works wonders. Come along, say hi and grab a bite to eat as you feast your eyes on what’s new.”

Ben Grunwerg, director, Grunwerg
“It will be fantastic to be back at Ambiente after the two year break as we have always enjoyed attending the world’s largest trade show. It is a great way to connect with both new and current customers.
This year we have a bigger and better stand than ever before and have just re-branded so will be there with a fresh new look. We are very much looking forward to receiving feedback on our new branding alongside all the latest products we have launched.
As Grunwerg is as family of brands, we have been very busy over the last year expanding many of these and developing new ones. Therefore we have a large selection of new products to showcase including several beautiful cutlery patterns, a popular new knife brand Katana Saya and innovative cookware into our Commichef range. Additionally we have introduced more cafetieres, teapots, salt and pepper mills into our Café Ole, Café Stal and Gmill brands, alongside several new reusable drinks flasks into our Pioneer collection.
We are relishing the opportunity to display a huge selection of our products, to provide visitors with an accurate representation of everything that Grunwerg has to offer. We are sure that 2023 will be our best show yet!”

“After an enforced absence and virtual meetings, we are so excited to be back exhibiting in real life. We have recently returned from a successful trip to North America where our customers really appreciated the value of face-to-face meetings, interacting with our products and discussing the possibilities for range building as well as insights from our global market knowledge.
We can’t wait to welcome new and old faces to our stand and restart the conversations. We are keen to support the unique needs of each customer with our dynamic product range, service and value.
The planning for Ambiente has been two years in the making and Eaton Dining are back, bigger than ever. We are launching so many new products, we are really looking forward to demonstrating our new core and seasonal ranges. Come and see us, stop by for a coffee and chat, leave with the knowledge that Eaton Dining will support you with the best products, best service and best prices. Our Guidance. Your choice.”
Chris Gee, managing director, Peugeot Saveurs UK
“We’re really excited to be back at what is Europe’s most important housewares show. In the past few years Peugeot has undergone a lot of changes and Ambiente is an excellent opportunity to showcase our progress as well as discuss face to face the fantastic new products we have. It’s a chance to plan the year and discuss business with our UK buyers and my own Peugeot international team. As a new subsidiary in UK, Ambiente also provides an opportunity to attract new customers who are not aware of how much the Peugeot brand and products have developed in the past few years.
Visitors will see extensions to the successful and contemporary Line range, with its chic combination of metal and wood and texture, as well as new exciting colours to add to the vibrant and fun Bistrorama range, a fabulous new concept in Spices and many new product surprises too.”

Richard Walker, managing director, Eddingtons
“I’m really looking forward to the return of Ambiente, it really is an international show and much needed after the last few years. Besides having the chance to show this year's novelties, it's the perfect place to see what is happening in the market place. This year you, as a visitor, can expect to see a 150square-meter stand full of Samura goods, including knives and knife accessories. The simple, beautiful glass products in the Pilastro series—the carafe, wine cooler, drinking glasses and bowls—already adorn many homes and now the series is expanding to include a cocktail shaker, long drink glasses and large drinking glasses. The new products have the same simple, sophisticated design language as the rest of the series designed by Francis Cayouette. The inspiration from the Art Deco style of the 1920s is seen in the decorative but simple design. Lifetime Brands is excited to attend Ambiente this year. Claire Budgen, commercial and marketing director, comments: “It feels so good to be returning, this is always such an important event to us, the perfect platform to launch our spring/summer collection and connect with our retail partners.
“This year we have much to shout about, our stand in Hall 9 will, as ever, showcase our key brands and our hospitality stand in Hall 11 will be launching the much-anticipated Mikasa Hospitality range, with all items designed to serve the Horeca sector.”
For those who cannot attend Ambiente, Lifetime Brands will also be hosting its own spring showcase from Sunday 5 February until Wednesday 8 February, in its centrally located Birmingham showroom, which all are welcome to join. Claire says: “With the entire range on display plus special show offers there will be plenty to inspire and delight in equal measure.”
One of the highlights is the new collection from S’well, the latest brand to be added to the Lifetime Brands mix. Claire explains: “S’well is the original hydration bottle, with over 25 million products sold and over four billion single-use plastic bottles displaced, S’well has proven the power of style, innovative performance and meaningful purpose to build movements and transform the way people consume. Tried and tested, and recently awarded the Coolbrand status, this name is not one to be missed.”
Drawing on the success of both La Cafetiere Pisa and MasterClass Cast Aluminum, Lifetime Brands has introduced different colours to each range. Claire says: “We know these will be sure winners for this season and beyond.”

Stölzle Lausitz
For over 130 years, Stölzle Lausitz has been producing fine glassware in the famous Lausitz region in Germany. Today it is one of the leading drinking glass manufacturers worldwide, a name synonymous with quality among hoteliers, sommeliers, restauranteurs and winemakers.
TThe region of Lausitz in Germany is steeped in glassmaking history. A document from 1433 mentions for the first time a glassworks that produced the greenish or brownish forest glass. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Lusatian town of Weißwasser was the centre of hollow glass production. And it is in Weißwasser where the story of Stölzle Lausitz begins in 1889.
The company first produced technical products such as glass tubes and light bulbs, but then in 1908 it started producing goblets. The first mechanical production at Stölzle Lausitz was in the 1960s which helped the glass producer to become a dominant part in the European glass industry. Today Stölzle Lausitz is one of the leading drinking glass manufacturers worldwide, with a daily production of 100,000 to 130,000 glasses and sales in over 120 countries around the world.
“Stölzle Lausitz is a company with over 130 years of history,” says Jan Zschiesche, export manager.
“Our current factory still stands on the site of the original factory. Since then, the group has continuously invested in the Weißwasser site, leading the way in technology and innovation. As one of the largest German manufacturers of goblets, Stölzle can operate with the qualities of a market leader: reliable, flexible and fast.”
Stölzle Lausitz is one of the
few glass manufacturers that has mastered the manufacturing process to produce a one-piece stem and bowl. The result is a machine-made glass with the features and elegance of mouth-blown glassware. Jan explains: “Not only do you discard the unsightly joint lines but more importantly, you produce a far stronger glass. This is particularly important to the catering industry, where durability is one of the most important issues, and has been warmly welcomed by them.”
It is in the hospitality industry where Stölzle Lausitz has built its reputation. “Professionals appreciate the quality of the Stölzle glasses,” says Jan. “They are dishwasher safe. A glass from Stölzle rarely breaks. And the particularly highquality Lusatian sand gives it brilliance. With its high quality standards, Stölzle clearly stands out from cheap suppliers.”
Although the hospitality sector took a huge knock
during the Covid pandemic, it is bouncing back driven by investment in the sector and the continuously changing lifestyle of consumers. “People are out socialising again, perhaps more than they were before the pandemic. Tourism is also recovering, which is good for the hotel industry, and therefore good for our business,” says Jan.
“We are in a very good position to be able to take advantage of this growth in the industry. We have excellent relationships with hoteliers, sommeliers, restauranteurs and winemakers, so we can predict the trends and respond with beautiful, high quality products.”
As consumer tastes change, so does the glassware they want to drink from. In the past, glassware has been highly decorated, but now the industry is moving towards simple modern glassware. “The shapes have also changed over the years,” says Jan. “Previously you had specific shapes for specific drinks, but things are not so rigid now. Stemless wine glasses and cups are all the rage right now. The cups can be used outdoors and in a relaxed atmosphere because they look chic, express a certain informality and are extremely stable. They are not only suitable for juices, water and soft drinks, but also for wines, as the shapes of the cups are based on the tops of the goblet glasses. And of course you can also enjoy spirits such as gin and whiskey in these.”
The champagne bowl is also making a comeback. Popular in the 1920s as well as in the 1960s and 1970s, this shape is experiencing a renaissance in the 2020s. “The bowls line up perfectly with our range of sparkling wine and champagne glasses,” says Jan. “And they’re not just for champagne, a cocktail in these bowls is also excellent.”
Stölzle Lausitz is able to offer customers a comprehensive range of stem glasses, tumblers, decanters and carafes, with a style to suit all needs at the right price/quality ratio, as Jan explains: “Our range encompasses everyday glassware right through to high end fine dining. But no matter what piece our customers choose, you can be guaranteed the Stölzle Lausitz commitment to quality.”
But the Stölzle Lausitz brand is not just for professionals. More and more people are entertaining at home than before the Covid pandemic and updating their tableware and glassware collections. “During Covid we saw a huge increase in online sales,” says Jan. “People couldn’t go out, but they still wanted a ‘restaurant’ experience at home. So they invested in restaurant-quality glassware. Our direct-to-consumer sales have increased and as part of that, we are relaunching our webshop to make it easier to shop directly with us.”
With 130 years of history behind it, Stölzle Lausitz is in a class of its own and looking forward to the future. “Our growing presence and the trend towards functional and elegant wine glasses supports our positive development on the world market. The prospects and future of our products and our brand are absolutely excellent,” sums up Jan.
Stölzle Lausitz at Ambiente
Stölzle Lausitz will showcase its latest glass series Symphony and Fino at Ambiente in Frankfurt in February. Visitors can see these new ranges and the rest of the Stölzle Lausitz range at Stand D71 in Hall 12.0.
Symphony is one the most durable machine-made glasses ever and has been coming off the production line in Lausitz since the end of 2022. The primary focus of this glass is its history and design. The glass is made using a combination of traditional mouth-blown techniques and the most advanced technology available.
Extremely thin glass walls are crisscrossed by fine vertical textures, which not only look attractive but also increase the inner surface area of the glass, allowing aromas to develop freely. The glass has a long and slender stem that gives it a distinctive elegance and makes it highly resistant to breaking. This characteristic was adapted from the mouthblowing process through a complex procedure. The stem of the goblet has no seam, the goblet is perfectly balanced and pleasing to hold.
Fino impresses with its extreme filigree. Never before has there been so little space between your hand and your wine. An ultra-thin pulled stem of the glass smoothly joins with the goblet. This sophisticated and noble series offers the basis for stylish delight and a high-quality taste experience. This excellent and compact series provides everything a wine lover needs.
A cut above the rest
Samura began its journey by launching its initial knife series in 2003, immediately revolutionising the contemporary kitchen knife. Its fixation on combining centuriesold traditions with progressive technology has made Samura a market leader in knife manufacturing and design.
Samura started as a family business led by founder, renowned designer, and engineer Alex Yakovlev, who still sketches every concept by hand.
Obsessed with precision, Alex invests countless hours in ensuring that everything carrying Samura’s name guarantees incomparable quality, everlasting sharpness, and singular aesthetics. And although the company has blossomed into a major market force, everything it does is still like a family shop: 90 percent of the production process is done manually. Nevertheless, it still comes out with two to five new knife series each year and continues to improve existing collections to ensure the best experience possible.
Samura offers a wide variety of knives and accessories designed with the HoReCa sector in mind. This includes knife blocks, whetstones, cutting boards, aprons, and more. “Have you ever tried to prepare a small fish with a huge fish fillet knife ?” asks Alex. “Well, we have such issues
covered. Not only do we have different styles of fish knives in different ranges, but we also offer different sizes. Our Mo-V range even features a small 5.5in fillet knife. When it comes to meat, Samura offers butcher, boning, skinning, slicer knives, and more to ensure that you have every tool necessary for every task you have to complete in the kitchen.”
He continues: “We believe that the HoReCa sector deserves a knife that won’t dull down quickly and accessories to maintain it in its best shape. Ranges such as Butcher, Sultan Pro, Arny, Pro S and Okinawa are a charm in the professional kitchen.”
Samura knives stand out from the competition with their unique designs, such as the Arny (Asian chef) or Sultan Pro (a series inspired by the Turkic Pchak). As Alex comments: “We believe in being able to express yourself even under strict requirements and in an industrial kitchen.”
Samura will be at Ambiente over 3 – 7 February with every single knife it currently offers, as well as all the accessories, leather chef rolls, signature roadblock knife holders and all kinds of whetstones.

1: Punk
The Punk collection is based on the design created by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro for a large flower box, which is still on display today in the garden of the Caldas da Rainha Ceramics Museum. The geometric elements, dimensions and colors of this piece are reminiscent of the subversive aesthetic of the movement born in England in the 1970s, which included pointy hairstyles, piercings, collars and metal spikes. These influences from the 20th century thus intersect with the irreverence of Raphael, an artist always ahead of his time, in three pieces that celebrate creativity and freedom of individual expression.

3: Cloudy Butterflies by Claudia Schiffer
The Cloudy Butterflies collection began with a poetic line where butterflies are the central motif, sometimes as an absolute form or as a decorative element, seeming to lift the creations they have on their wings. The success of this decorative collection designed by Claudia Schiffer gave rise to new pieces that can be used by themselves or combined with the pieces already launched. The hand-painted butterflies continue to be present in a harmonious palette of earth tones, warm browns and oranges, lonely or seeming to hover over ethereal clouds, with handmade textures. This is a work which continues to enhance the traditional techniques of Bordallo Pinheiro and to give the collection a strong artistic nature.

What’s New Progressive Tablewares highlights some of the latest products available at Ambiente 2023
Over recent years, Eddingtons has increased its tableware offering to include some design-led brand partners such as Stelton and Guzzini. Progressive Housewares found out from managing director, Richard Walker, how the brands have been performing in the UK, the plans for the coming year, and the trends in the sector.
Glass half full
SHaving partnered with Stelton and its sister brand Rig-Tig in 2021, to distribute the range in the UK and Eire, Eddingtons has grown the brand, synonymous with Scandinavian design, and enjoyed a strong year in 2021 for the collection.
Richard Walker, managing director of Eddingtons, tells us: “It’s been a great year for Stelton and their sister brand Rig-Tig, which means ‘Just Right’ in Danish. We’ve been rebuilding the brand’s UK presence, which dropped away a little after Brexit, but its following from the trade and consumers as a leading tableware and design collection put the brand in an excellent place.
“Since launching in the UK, we partnered with a number of selected retailers and now sales are performing really well once again and are building further with the introduction of new products.”
One of Stelton’s most iconic products is its Stainless Steel Gravy Boat, which launched in the 1960s and quickly became popular outside of Denmark, particularly in the US, where the company’s products began to be sold in exclusive department stores and design shops. 60 years later and the brand is still received well by UK retail for both its classic and new products.
Richard expands: “Stelton is highly regarded for the classic EM77 and Emma ranges, but also for innovation such as the new Brus water carbonators in chrome, black and brushed brass finishes. The company’s Pilastro glassware has also been extended to include a cocktail shaker and tall tumbler – already becoming a design classic.”
Established ranges are also regularly refreshed: “Stelton tend to constantly refresh ranges by adding colour, as well as design, in order to remain on trend,”
Stelton stats
l Stelton was founded in 1960 with an ambition to create timeless and functional design, which makes everyday life more beautiful.
l The company was founded by two soldier comrades, Stellan and Carton, who combined their names to create the brand. They started out selling sports shoes and furniture, but quickly moved to housewares when they discovered a factory called Danish Stainless and began to market their ranges.
l Many Stelton ranges are the result of collaborations with international designers and architects, including Arne Jacobsen and Erik Magnussen, which have often been awarded with design accolades such as Red Dot, German Design Award and the ID price.
l In 2004, the Ring family acquired Stelton and has since extended its collaboration with architects and designers.
says Richard. “The Emma range now includes new items in their sand colour new for this spring. New materials are also employed.”
Eddingtons has focussed on the tableware market over recent years. Richard explains: “We have increased our tabletop sector even more so since lockdown, when consumer focus switched to our outdoor dining collections with Epicurean Melamine and acrylics, for example.
“More recently since distributing Guzzini we have become involved in cutlery and have just launched some fabulous new colours in this popular collection which sit well with the bright summer salad and fruit bowls in their Le Murine range. The Feeling cutlery range is great to mix and match and has three new colours this spring.”
Eddingtons took on UK and Eire distribution for Guzzini in June last year. The Italian housewares brand was established in 1912, and continues to be a leading innovator in the sector. Richard continues:
“Our partnership with Guzzini has been more of a relaunch since Guzzini has actually been available in the UK since the 50s – there are even some acrylics in the V&A Museum, which demonstrates their commitment to innovation and design.
“Customers are loving how the brand has evolved in recent times with the addition of post-consumer recycled plastics married with the superior technology employed in manufacturing in Italy.”
The international brands available from Eddingtons fit perfectly into the current trends in tableware. Richard comments: “Tableware is becoming more eclectic in my opinion, particularly reflecting memories of world travel to perhaps exotic and evocative destinations which may be perhaps a Moroccan Bazaar, a Thai food market, or a trip to the lakes.
“Another key trend is muted stoneware often artisanal shapes giving a handmade unique look and feel. We manage this with our melamine ranges using matt finishes or gloss varnishes to enhance design details giving a handmade look and feel with the heavier weight product.”
Fulfilling demand for current trends with leading
Guzzini lowdown
l Enrico Guzzini created his eponymous brand in 1912, creating exquisite objects in ox horn.
l Guzzini’s first milestone in innovation, was the introduction of Plexiglas into the manufacture of housewares. In 1950, the company was the first in the world to manufacture acrylic two-coloured items using thermoforming technology.
l In 1955, Guzzini launched plastic design objects for domestic use and continued to innovate in the field for the next 60+ years.
l In 2019, Guzinni launched the circle programme, comprising eco-sustainable products. The Tidy&Store modular boxes and Tierra tableware were the first collection made by recycling post-consumer disposable water bottles.
l Celebrating its 110th anniversary last year, Guzzini launched the 110 pitcher – a tribute to designer Charles F Joosten, inspired by his famous 1957 range.
brands is one of the factors making Eddingtons stand out in the tableware sector. “I believe it’s the mix of world class brand partners that add excellence to the category either by employing great design or their manufacturing prowess allowing different treatment of material,” says Richard. And there’s more newness to come from Eddingtons in the tableware sector in 2023. Richard concludes: “We are already working on our 2024 Melamine collections. Guzzini is launching a new Dolce Vita Acrylic range and Stelton continue to add to their own ranges creating flair with colour and form.”

Winning the Excellence in Housewares Eco Award last October is testimony to Denby’s commitment to continually improving its environmental performance.
Leading the way in sustainability
Producing ceramics in the heart of England since Denby’s beginning in 1809, the pottery has always worked with locally sourced clay, keeping transport of its main raw material to a minimum. Over the years Denby has considered its sustainability practices as part of its development path, so the company was particularly proud to win the Excellence in Housewares Eco Award 2022 for its new Studio Blue Accent pattern.
Dean Barlow, operations director at Denby comments: "Sustainability is integral to Denby’s strategy for growth and the business was the first UK tableware manufacturer to be able to claim zero process waste to landfill which helps to save 600 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. We are partnering with Ylem Energy to implement a solar PV solution which will enable further significant carbon reductions to be made and reduce the business’s reliance on sourcing power from the National Grid.”
Denby’s energy consumption is industry leading and is at least 15% lower than Government targets set. A solar array is another step towards achieving net zero. The solar installation will be situated behind Denby Pottery at its 75-acre manufacturing site in Derbyshire.
Denby has in place an Environmental Management System which is accredited against IS0 14001 and also
Mix and match
employs an environmental officer. All decisions within the manufacturing process are made with environmental impacts at the forefront of their development and Denby monitors all processes to continually improve environmental performance.
Denby recycles over 100,000 litres of glaze annually as well as moulds and clay waste to efficiently re-use resources. Denby has long taken responsibility for cleaning the water used on site and has its own water treatment plant which each year purifies and returns 20 million litres of process water to the water cycle.
Although a high proportion of Denby is available without packing, recyclable packaging is available for its boxed gift sets and home décor pieces which include prestige vases. Denby is also on a programme of eliminating single-use plastics for packaging. All incoming cardboard boxes are recycled, with some being shredded and used as a packing filler.
Denby crafts timeless collections that exude English heritage whilst seeking out trends to create ceramics which meet contemporary lifestyles. However, Denby doesn’t advocate replacing pottery for the sake of it. Denby’s versatility and durability means consumers can mix and match not only vintage tableware but other pottery already in their home with contemporary Denby. Long gone are the days when all tableware had to match.

Iconic French brand invests in UK
Peugeot Saveurs is the kitchenware arm of the Peugeot brand - the worldrenowned French company (famous for its cars), which has been making premium-quality salt, pepper and coffee mills for over 200 years, along with ceramic cookware and wine accessories that are used by both chefs and foodies globally.
It has been a fun and successful first full year for Peugeot’s newest subsidiary in the UK, helped by its partner Burton McCall. As Chris Gee, managing director, Peugeot Saveurs UK comments: “We were luckily well-positioned post lockdown to continue to benefit from the rediscovery of home cuisine with people tending to buy once and buy well, which is where premium products like ours win out.”
This is reinforced by the recent IHA survey suggesting that 35% of people expect to entertain more at home in 2023 than 2022. Additionally research shows Peugeot are a strongly gifted brand, recognising this, packaging has been improved to focus on this opportunity.
Chris continues ”Peugeot are renowned for matching quality engineering with elegant design, which has been the Peugeot motto since the first days in 1810, and we’re really proud that the lion’s share of our manufacturing is still done at our French factory. We know that being able to continue saying ‘Made in France’ is important to our brand and our customers.”
While the company has, of course, modernised, craftsmen and women still use many original artisanal methods. “Some of the mills are still hand-turned

for example, and most of our employees are specialists in their field,” says Chris.
“With business booming, the company is now looking to the future. It is investing €4 Mio in the factory over the next five years. This is part of a plan to grow the business to €100 Mio by the end of the decade,” confirms Chris, “and key to this growth will be the company’s innovation – something Peugeot is constantly working on.”
