THE CEREMONY PROGRAM

FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Tonight is really a unique opportunity to see, in one 75-minute Ceremony, all that is great about our industry around the world. We come together to honor the lifetime achievements of our Hall of Fame inductees, along with the promising careers of our Rising Stars. We pay tribute to the generosity and good works of our licensing community in support of the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. And we celebrate the accomplishments of our worldwide colleagues in creating the best licensed products and programs of the year. The LIMA International Licensing Awards are a continually evolving recognition of global success. Tonight’s nominees were selected from a record-breaking 461 entries from 14 countries. To say the least, the competition to make the ballot was significant – and the resulting winners an even more difficult choice for our members to make. The continued growth of this Awards program is truly a reflection of the ever-increasing creativity and strategic business accomplishments that global licensing professionals achieve year-round. Congratulations to all and thank you for the work each of you has done this year on behalf of licensing.

Charles Riotto President LIMA

A Collective Effort As with most things in life and business, the LIMA International Licensing Awards are the result of a whole host of people and companies pulling together. Thanks to: everyone who entered, nominated, judged and voted; the Awards Committee and the internal LIMA team (especially Louise Q. Caron and Christina Jordan), Erik Motta NYC (for the charity video production), Parham Santana for the design graphics for the charity effort, Max Publishing for the design and publication of this Tribute Book; Max Live Events for the award ceremony production and Creative Concepts for the bespoke trophies. And, of course, to everyone here for being at the Awards Ceremony to see it all!

LIMA IS EVERYWHERE

THE GLOBAL REACH LIMA has a strong membership of some 1,100 companies – over half of which are now based outside the US. We have truly become a global organization, keeping pace with our industry as it expands internationally. With offices in the US, UK, Mexico, Germany, Japan, China and Australia – as well as a network of representatives in Canada, France, India, Italy, Korea, Latin America and the Middle East – LIMA is always on the go! In the last year we have held a variety of events around the world – from the UK Retail Seminar at the House of Commons to the Sports Licensing Roundtable in Frankfurt to networking events in India and licensing breakfasts in Australia. In March we held our second licensing showcase, Expolicencias, in Bogota, Colombia, as well as our second Mind Mix event in Milan, Italy. LIMA is also the exclusive sponsor of events organized by UBM’s Global Licensing Group: Licensing Expo, Brand Licensing Europe, Licensing Expo Japan, Licensing Expo China, and NYC Summit. Here we do a spot of globetrotting…

THE LIMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

THE LIMA BOARD One of LIMA’s many strengths lies in its Board of Directors, who through their collective experience and individual perspectives, reflect the broad reach of the licensing industry. Elections are conducted every Spring, with new terms beginning every July 1. The Nominating Committee develops a slate of industry candidates that is considered and ultimately approved by the sitting Board, and then voted on by the LIMA membership. LIMA by-laws provide that there can be no fewer than 15 sitting board members, with a minimum of two licensors, two licensees, two support members, and one ‘non-resident, non-citizen of the United States for the purpose of providing representation on the Board for non-citizens’. At least two ‘at-large’ members may be selected from any of the aforementioned categories. CIARÁN COYLE (Chairman) Global Vice President & Head, Global Brand Licensing, Electrolux Global Marketing

THE JUDGING PROCESS

ARRIVING AT THE WINNERS Inset: The LIMA Awards Committee, incognito at their meeting in February held at the Association’s headquarters in the Empire State Building in New York.

The LIMA International Licensing Awards subscribes to the theory that a credible awards program relies on two key elements – high caliber entries and a judging process of total integrity. For 2017, we saw a record number of Awards entries – a nearly 25% increase in submissions over 2016! Here we explain how the nominees and eventual winners are selected for these prestigious accolades.

The LICENSED PROGRAM AND PRODUCT Awards Categories The LIMA Awards are open to licensors, agents, licensees and retailers from around the world. The inclusive nature of the program means entrants do not have to be a member of the Association to participate. A dedicated Awards Committee comprising 12 members of the trade press and retail industry acts as the judging panel. Their identities remain anonymous, but their collective experience and expertise span the entire industry. This year, we received 461 entries from 14 countries. The submissions were reviewed in February by the Committee and a final line-up of 126 nominees were named across the 20 award categories. Winners were then determined by a vote of the LIMA membership in April.

The Hall Of Fame Our industry is filled with talented professionals who have made an impact on the business of licensing throughout their careers. Induction into the LIMA Hall of Fame is a special recognition of those with outstanding achievements and true legacy. Each year, the entire industry is invited to recommend qualified candidates who have been actively involved in licensing for a minimum of 15 years and whose contributions have ongoing relevance to the industry. A dedicated Hall of Fame Committee reviews all submissions and select the final candidate or candidates to be named to the Hall of Fame during the LIMA Licensing Awards Ceremony.

CHARITY GIVING

ALL CHILDREN DESERVE TO RUN AND PLAY AND ENJOY THE SIMPLE PLEASURES OF BEING YOUNG

HELP US HELP THE KIDS Through the generosity of the licensing industry, over $6 million has been raised for Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation since 2004. This year, we are once again calling on our industry to “Help Us Help the Kids” – to support our efforts and help kids to enjoy a childhood full of life and free of cancer. Every dollar that our industry donates can help children of all ages, from all corners of the world.

LIMA CARES: THE CHILDREN’S BRAIN TUMOR TISSUE CONSORTIUM Roughly one-third of kids around the world who are diagnosed with cancerous brain tumors do not live beyond five years. It is the deadliest childhood cancer… yet research for this disease is one of the most underfunded. The LIMA Charity Committee continues to raise funds for the Children’s Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium, where doctors from 13 global hospitals – led by a dedicated team at Children’s

Hospital of Philadelphia – are committed to finding a cure. The Consortium was recently recognized by the US White House for the multi-institutional, collaborative approach of this groundbreaking research initiative.

LIMA AND THE LICENSING COMMUNITY ARE SAVING LIVES!

14

LIMA is the only corporate sponsor of the Consortium – without the generosity of the licensing community, the Consortium would simply be unable to grow and expand. One hundred percent of the money donated goes directly to this vital research. Playmates International, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Discovery are just some of the world-class companies involved in licensing that support LIMA’s fundraising efforts.

Allan Feldman - LMCA Allan Feldman needs little introduction. He is a true licensing industry pioneer with more than 40 years experience in the business.

Allan is credited with being the first to bring trademark licensing into industrial products. He was one of the trailblazers to utilize direct-to-retail licensees (via a $5 billion deal between Kmart and White-Westinghouse) and implement a co-branding deal (between Eddie Bauer and Ford Explorer). Allan began flexing the power of corporate brand licensing in the mid 1970s, showcasing licensing as a ‘wonder-tool’ for brand and bottom-line growth. He started the licensing agency LMCA in 1986 with an ensuing client roster that reads like a who’s who in business and leisure, including venerable brands such as AT&T, Craftsman, Del Monte, Frigidaire, HP, Ingersoll Rand, Mobil Corporation, Snuggle, The ’21’ Club, Trane, 3M, United Airlines, Westinghouse, American Diabetes Association, and the San Diego Zoo, among many others. A former LIMA board member, Allan served on two LIMA committees, and is a member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) and International Trademark Association (INTA). He is a board member of the U.S Department of Commerce’s New York District Export Council (NYDEC) and the Intellectual Property Management Institute, and is on the advisory board of The Licensing Journal. His commitment to LIMA goes a lot further than US shores as he was a member of LIMA’s first delegation to China and helped bring the organization and licensing to Asia.

Dell Furano - Epic Rights A true legend in the music licensing and merchandising industry, Dell Furano has been instrumental in growing music artists’ brands into a multi-billion-dollar global business. Dell’s expansive 40-plus year career has definitely hit a lot of high notes. Over the last four decades he has been instrumental in directing the merchandising and licensing efforts for the top names in the music industry including The Beatles, KISS, Madonna, U2, AC/DC, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Wham/George Michael, Shakira, and more, as well as having orchestrated concert merchandise programs for music legends such as The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Barbra Streisand, Prince, Aerosmith, Tim McGraw, The Who, and many more. Dell began his career in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1974, after graduating from Stanford University, by licensing Grateful Dead tie-dye apparel and poster deals for record stores and head shops. Working closely with top iconic artists and early on recognizing their licensing potential, Dell continued to expand his licensing brandbuilding strategy. He launched major retail branding programs for New Kids on The Block, Britney Spears, Run DMC, Jessica Simpson, Celine Dion, the Osbourne Family reality TV show, Woodstock, John Lennon’s Imagine Children’s line, Michael Jackson’s Mystery Drink program, Steve Martin’s line of merchandise for ‘Wild and Crazy’, Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ brand, Janet Jackson, MC Hammer, Ozzy, The Police, the Lyrics of Lennon & McCartney, and Pink Floyd The Wall. He currently helms Epic Rights, which he founded in Los Angeles in 2013. Previous to Epic, Dell was founder and CEO of Sony Signatures – later renamed Signatures Network – and became CEO of Live Nation Merchandise when he sold Signatures Network to Live Nation. And the symphony continues!

Cyril Speijer – BN Licensing BV A licensing and merchandising trailblazer in his native Netherlands, Cyril Speijer and his Wavery Productions has been a go-to agent for character and brand licensing for more than 50 years. Beginning in 1967 by organizing product promotions, Cyril became an agent extraordinaire with characters such as Marsupilami, Bollie & Billie, The Smurfs, and many others for publisher Dupuis and Lombard. He also was the force that propelled Tintin way beyond the Hergé comic strip. When the Oberon publishing house closed its licensing division, Wavery Productions stepped in and managed the rights to five-star characters Asterix & Obelix and Lucky Luke. In addition, among others, Cyril has collaborated with Lucasfilm, Universal Studios, LCA, EON Productions (for James Bond), Lorimar, United Media, ZIV, Paws, The Jim Henson Company, Peanuts Worldwide, and the former Children’s Television Workshop (for Sesame Street). In addition, he was credited with rolling out the international licensing program for the National Football League and the National Hockey League. The second non-American executive to be inducted into the Licensing Hall of Fame – behind Shintaro Tsuji, founder of Tokyo-based Sanrio Co., Ltd. – Cyril is a former LIMA board member and the 1995 recipient of the LIMA International Licensing Agent Award.
