President Forward I am pleased to get back to you again after you having celebrated the blessed festival of Eid Al Adha. There is no doubt that it was a wonderful occasion full of joy for all of you and you continue to be in high spirits and morale, at the same time working hard for the benefit of Bahrain. Time flies and we continuously strive to add to the extraordinary successes that we have achieved so far this year. The company’s achievements have reinforced its position as one of the most recognizable the world over in the field of petrochemicals and fertilizers. This is because of the efforts that have been made by the management and the programmes and policies it has set up. It is also because of the dedication and hard work of all the company employees and the extent of their efforts, which have led to these achievements. The co-operation and co-ordination between the various departments has also been exemplary and this has resulted in the relentless progress made in all departments, including those related to the company’s operations and human resources development. Perhaps the highlight of the last months has been the celebration the company’s annual health and safety celebrations that were this year attended by more than 1,500 employees and their families. This event was, indeed, a recognition for not only the employees but for everyone connected with the company that they are fully committed to the safety, health and environmental issue which are so dear to us. This makes us feel that we follow these standards as a way of life. We have also recently achieved the distinct honour of being the gold sponsor of the First National Occupational Safety and Health Conference and Exhibition hosted by Bahrain with great success and which
consisted of seminars on ways to develop strategies to be safe and at work in a and in a healthy environment. We are proud to say that our laboratories have given us global recognition and we have now become certified and approved by United States-based companies. This means we are more reliable and more recognised than ever before. On the other hand, the company has experienced over the recent past, visits by professionals from all over the world to our complex when we have displayed to everyone that we are not only a modern complex but also a model; employer in Bahrain fertiliser industry. We can now say that we are also a communityoriented company, having shown our solidarity with the Palestinian people who have been brutally attacked and have greatly suffered in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of Ramadan, leading to the killing of innocent civilians.All of our employees have contributed a day’s salary for the Palestinian people after an appeal by His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. We are glad the proceeds will be used to contribute materials for the people of Gaza who will, hopefully, feel better as a result of this gesture. We will strive to work with dedication for our company and make it the best industrially as well as in the service of the community.

Thanks to an ambitious approach from its Board of Directors and the commitment of its staff, GPIC is celebrating what looks to be another exceptional year for the company. The first half of 2014 has seen the company overcome challenging market conditions and intense competition to exceed its own goals and expectations for the period. The company has not only continued to excel in its levels of production and exports, but has also received global recognition for its safety procedures and its environmental management systems.
When interviewed about these recent achievements, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, GPIC President, was keen to emphasise the company’s dedication to continuing on this path to new heights of excellence. He also stressed that whilst the company is ambitious in its production and export targets, the enforcement of strong safety procedures throughout all levels of the company remains the backbone of the organisation and its continued success. The company has also enjoyed above expected levels of production, producing 227 thousand tonnes of ammonia, an increase of 2%; 225 thousand tonnes of methanol, an increase this time of 3.5% and finally, the production of 360 thousand tonnes of urea, equivalent to an increase of 7% on expected levels. Dr. Jawahery concluded his statement by re-emphasising that all these achievements would not have been possible without the strategy of the Board of Directors, chaired by HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa and his fellow members of the Board of Directors, who have spared no effort in supporting the efforts of the Executive Management in its quest to enhance returns on the company’s investments;

Petrochemical Industries Company today released its second Biennial Sustainability Report 2014 “ Building a Greener Future” on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines highlighting the progress GPIC made in 2012 and 2013 and the new longterm sustainability goals announced earlier this year. “As we are members of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) this report also reflects our Communication on Progress (COP) for the commitment and implementation of the universally accepted ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), said Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, President of GPIC. “We are proud to say that the report has been verified by GRI for achieving an application level “A” status.To achieve an ‘A’ level endorsement and to exhibit our transparency and accountability, we have reported on 140 performance indicators and profile disclosures which cover the whole scope of our operations. GPIC Supports Al Rahma Centre for Youth Welfare In light of the cultural trends of the Kingdom of Bahrain and in accordance with the directives of HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Advisor to HRH the Prime Minister for Industrial and Oil Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors, the company has recently given financial support to the Al Rahma Centre for Youth Welfare.
At a reception held by HE Mr. Rasheed Al Me’raj, Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain and Chairman of the Al Rahma Centre for Youth Care, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, GPIC President, accompanied by members of the GPIC Executive Management team, presented Mr. Rasheed with a cheque to support the Centre’s activities and programmes.

Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, GPIC President, recently returned from Sydney, Australia after heading the company’s delegation that participated in the 82nd Annual Conference of the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA). The 82nd Annual Conference of the International Fertilizer Association witnessed more than a thousand participants from more than 77 countries from different regions of the world, representing major companies involved in the production of chemical fertilizers. Discussions focused on the future of chemical fertilizers and their role in the provision of food in addition to increasing their role in energy provision, where crops are used in the production of oils used as alternatives to oil and gas.

During these meetings, the adoption of a foundation system and the approval of bylaws of the Association were discussed, reviewed and amended in line with the requirements of the next stage of the association’s long term goals. The meeting also saw the International Fertilizer Association acknowledge the adoption of the six principles for Food and Agriculture recently released by the Global Compact of the United Nations. Mr. Maraghi, who is a member of the Egyptian Shura Council and its constituent assembly, also heads the country’s delegation to the current session of the Arab Labour Organisation. The ceremony came as part of the company policy to encourage the development of its Bahraini workforce. The GPCA, formed in 2006, is a dedicated non-profit association serving its members with industry data and information resources. It is the first such association to represent the interests of the petrochemicals and chemicals industries in the Arabian Gulf and it has brought a major dimension to its task by creating both a forum for discussion and a place where like-minded people can meet and share concepts and ideas. GPIC hosts Japanese engineering students Students from well-known Japanese institutions - Sendai National College of Technology and the Fukushima National College of Technology - were hosted at the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) as part of the company’s policy to support students of educational institutions worldwide and to promote cultural co-operation. The students’ visit was held in co-operation with Japanese engineering giant Yokogawa as part of its programme to communicate with companies and institutions worldwide and in a bid to enhance the technical knowledge of its own students. Company Public Relations Manager Mr. Zuhair Tawfiqi welcomed the delegation, which consisted of six students led by Yokogawa Human Development Senior General Manager Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed, at the GPIC complex in Sitra. Mr.Tawfiqi conveyed to the visitors the greetings of GPIC President, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and briefed them on the company’s business philosophy and strategy,
which is built on professional operational processes and high standards of health, safety and the environment. GPIC Training and Development Superintendent Dr. Ahmed Bucheeri delivered a lecture during which he talked about the company’s management approach.He demonstrated,along with examples, the application of strategies and educational and training programmes offered by the GPIC to raise their skills and professionalism of employees and highlighted the high level of Bahrainisation. The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) is to sponsor the Heya Beya celebrations being organized this year by the Bahrain Association for Parents of the Disabled on the eve of Eid Al Adha. The decision comes in line with the company’s policy of looking after people with special needs and their integration into society.The celebrations are being held at the Dry Dock waterfront in Arad. In a statement, GPIC President, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said the company is keen to take care of activities and events organized by civil society institutions, especially those related to children and young people and people with special needs. He praised preparations being made by the association for the event and said these aim to integrate people with disabilities into the community by involving in rubbing shoulders with people with no disabilities and in a festive atmosphere. He said the company takes pride in providing such
support and contribute to its success. Dr. Jawahery said the GPIC always looks at supporting clubs and institutions that work towards community service. Society President Mr. Jassim Mohammed Seyadi said the festival looks to encourage persons with disabilities to take part in folklore events and said these are very popular with Bahraini families and their children. He said a growing number of children with special needs and their families attend the celebrations. Mr. Seyadi said Heya Beya is part of the Bahraini folklore dating back to hundreds of years and the association took pride in in presenting the festival for the benefit of Bahraini families. The festival is organized annually by the association and includes a variety of activities including an exhibition of productive families and stands displaying various arts and crafts. GPIC President attends fertilizer industry meeting The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) President, Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery attended meetings of the executive council of the International Fertilizer Industry Association. The meetings, held in the French capital, Paris, discussed the obstacles and challenges faced by fertilizer manufacturers in different countries. Present during the meetings were the members of the Board of f the federation. The discussion during the meeting also covered topics relevant to the global fertilizer industry, the most important of which is food security and constraints faced by fertilizer manufacturers, in addition to the situation and challenges relating to this strategic industry around the world. Dr. Jawahery, who is also a member of the board, a member of the advisory council and vice president for its sustainable development committee, spoke about the importance of the meeting and reviewed the developments in the industry

With the start of the summer holiday for the schools in the Kingdom, GPIC kicked off the summer activities with its own children’s summer programme. The company organises these activities on an annual basis for the employees’ children and this year, began directly after the Eid al-Fitr holidays. The programme has proven to be very popular in the past as parents try their best to ensure their children take full advantage of the summer vacation months in a way that is both fun and educational, and this year was no exception.
