WRITTEN BY ELISHA PILMOOR

GOOD MORNING MR MAGPIE!

Some people seem to be luckier in life than others but ways to boost luck don’t always mean avoiding black cats and collecting four-leaf clovers. By making small changes, a life can be transformed and showered in luck – Mayhem! finds out how to…

GET LUCKIER IN LIFE CARE AND DILIGENCE BRING LUCK When things are going wrong, it’s easy to blame it on bad luck and assume that people doing better only do so because of a helping hand. But a positive outlook on life can bring around better fortune. A happier, more open-minded person sees opportunities where others see adversity. If you are looking for the best, you will find it and even if you find something below par, you turn it into a blessing. 10 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

IT MAY BE DELUSIONAL BUT WE’RE HAPPIER DELUDED

A SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY By believing what you do creates luck, you will begin to feel luckier. If you have expectations of a behaviour causing luck, you believe that doing it again will create more luck. Such an outlook reinforces a positive mindset and things you wouldn’t normally do become routine; just to get the lucky feeling. So, pick everyday actions which you feel bring you luck and you might just see it.

Although superstitions can cause odd routines like saluting a magpie, delusions help us perform better and improve our luck. The false pretence of wishing someone good luck before a competition works because it increases self-confidence. The delusion that words can create luck give a positive superstitious belief and in turn improves performances. Luck is based on your outlook and those who believe they create their own luck, tend to be luckiest of all.

YUMMY!

There seems to be a lot of buzz lately about seasonal produce, growing your own vegetables and the importance of shopping locally. While this may seem like a trend set by chefs, the impact it has on our everyday lives is not to be overlooked.

YUMMY! First of all, the quality of fruit and vegetables that are in season is undeniable. You just can’t say that British strawberries in June taste the same as packaged ones coming from Egypt in the middle of winter. When you choose your fresh produce, you must check its origin; if it’s British you know it’s in season and fresh as it hasn’t travelled miles to get to you. Secondly, the price you pay for your shop will be considerably less if you shop seasonally, and you help the planet at the same time by reducing the amount of travelling your fruit and veg has to do before going home with you. There is an amazing selection of fresh food markets around, offering the best prices and quality, plus you are guaranteed fresh produce, while supporting your local community at the same time. Fareham holds a big farmers market every Monday 9am–3pm and an Independent Farmers’ Market 9am–2pm on the first

Saturday of every month hosting up to 40 local growers and supporting Hampshire’s local farming and rural community. The blog The Urbane Forager (theurbaneforager.blogspot.co.uk) gives local information on how to make the most of your area’s produce and shares activities you could do to get kids involved too! Local organisation Hampshire Fare also strives to raise awareness on the importance of consuming the best of Hampshire produce. Produce that is at its best in the next few months includes: lamb, asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli, savoy cabbage, leeks, radishes and the one everyone is excited about, rhubarb! So get creative with all of these; all the green vegetables in season would be perfect as a hearty lamb broth or a warm salad, and of course, rhubarb crumble for pudding all throughout March!

to Stuart Wooden

T.M. Lewin, in association with Mayhem! Magazine and seven retailers from Gunwharf Quays, asked people to nominate a man who they felt deserved a bumper package of pampering in a luxury makeover worth over £1,000. As the entries came flooding in, the nominees were short-listed to five potential winners. Unveiled as the winner at a glittering ceremony

held at Tiger Tiger, Stuart’s unwavering dedication to his family impressed the judges. Three years ago, Karen Wooden became seriously ill very quickly. As her health declined, her husband took over the reins and never once complained. “He just said we are in this together and we were”, said Karen. “Hospital visits, shopping anything that needed to be done he took over and did

everything allowing me time to rest and recuperate and we really did go through it together.” The couple, who will be celebrating their silver wedding anniversary this year both agreed it was the perfect way to close the worst three years of their lives. Following his makeover, the Woodens enjoyed a luxury night out courtesy of Brasserie Blanc and Tiger Tiger.

GETTING MOIST WITH…

“I’ve always been obsessed with Red Nose Day ever since I was at school”

BBC Radio One presenter Greg James took part in The BT Red Nose: Hell and High Water challenge, and in a Mayhem! Exclusive, we catch up following his return to find out what it was like sharing a boat with the likes of Dara O’Briain, Jack Dee and Mel C. Hey Greg! You’ve just been to Zambia as part of Comic Reliefs ‘Hell and High Water’ challenge, and raised an enormous sum of money for charity – what was it like? It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. Ever. Physically exhausting, mentally challenging but the team all pulled together and when we visited the people we were raising money for along the way, it all made sense and our hardship paled into insignificance. So, how did it all come about? or did you volunteer yourself? I’ve always been obsessed with Red Nose Day ever since I was at school and we sold the noses to everyone, and to be in a position to say yes to one of these challenges. I knew it would open my eyes to a new part of the world. And oh my god it did! Stuck in a boat with the likes of Dara O’Briain, Chelsea Healey and Jack Dee must have been hilarious, what was the funniest moment during the trip? Two things stick out in my mind. Chelsee and I were in a kayak together and a small fish jumped in. She panicked. Screamed, jumped back onto my lap and started swearing at it. We almost capsized because she was wobbling about so much. Also, I sang lots of Spice Girls songs with Mel C. Life highlight. ‘They’ say you should do one thing every day that scares you… how many days’ worth have got stacked up now? I think I’ve got a years worth of being scared banked up right?? Scariest bit was when we lost Dara and Philips down the wrong channel and they had to call the

emergency boats. We all realised then that this was a proper challenge with real dangers. You’ve done quite a few other challenges recently too, doing radio with the forces in Afghanistan, and gaining your racing licence too – are there any other challenges you’d like to try soon? For now, I’m absolutely fine staying in the UK and working hard on my radio show but absolutely want to take on some more challenges. I love doing things I never thought I would. Afghan and Africa were two of those things. I want to do something mega for Sport Relief or maybe next Red Nose Day. Something like Everest. Imagine that! Do you still pinch yourself when you realise how far you’ve come since student radio and now that you’re amongst some big names in radio? Absolutely. Every day. It was my dream job and I’m doing it, and it’s going better than I ever thought it would so I have no complaints and I’m just trying to enjoy every moment of it. It’s mental to have gone from new boy to one of the two big shows (Drivetime) in six years. You always seem to be have a lot of fun with your radio interviews and guests! Have any of your fun features and interviews ever gone wrong and worked out badly? Every interview needs to have something different in it – without being too whacky – so I always plan them out a bit beforehand, Aaron Johnson reacted badly to me jokingly telling him that Fearne fancied him. That was weird. He obviously didn’t get the joke. MARCH 2013 | MAYHEM!

GETTING MOIST WITH… Is there one band in particular you’d like to think you might fit in with if they were looking for another member? If I want to become cool, I’d like to be in the Maccabees. Effortlessly cool chaps. Brilliantly talented too. If I want to be rich and play the double bass and wear a waistcoat, I’d like to be in Mumford and Sons. I can be their dancer. I could dress as a Morris Dancer. On the radio you come across as just another decent guy – what do you find yourself getting up to when you’re not working? Ha! As long as I’m having fun with my favourite people it could be absolutely anything. My best mates are still my best mates from school and we go out a lot. Only difference is I take them to swanky places these days. I go and watch rugby and cricket with my dad, play sport myself. Also, comedy is a huge love of mine, my mates from Uni are now doing really well on the circuit so I will go a support them. As you mentioned, I’ve got my racing licence and I love cars. I will just drive for hours. Such amazing freedom. You’re a ‘secret’ fan of TV shows like Midsummer Murders. If you got to play a part, who would you like to be? Would you be fine with getting killed off dramatically…? No way. I’ve thought about this a lot. I want to be DCI Barnaby’s sidesick. The blunderous but ultimately successful character. Failing that, a corpse will do just fine. You’ve done some TV yourself recently, like ‘Unzipped’ on BBC3 and lots of festival coverage too. Do you enjoy being able to do such varied things alongside your radio show? I do yeah. I have been lucky enough to have Radio 1 as my main thing so I have been able to wait to pick the right TV thing for me. Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

Got a load more exciting stuff potentially starting this year too but Unzipped is a brilliant show to do and that’s coming back in the Autumn. Are there any TV presenters you’d like to emulate in the future, or shows you’d like to do something similar to? I really look up to Dermot [O’Leary]. Always loved watching him on TV and he doesn’t try too hard to be funny and he has brilliant warmth. Warmth is so underrated in performers. People forget that you can get away with way more if you have a cheeky smile or you endear yourself to them. There’s no need to be out and out nasty to be funny. You can disguise it by being nice! Who was the last person you met and were pretty star struck by? I was doing an interview the other day and John Cleese walked in. I couldn’t speak. He’s my hero. Monty Python made me like growing up. If we gave you enough money to put on your own festival this summer, which three acts would you try to get on the lineup and why? Jay-Z and Kanye (best gig of 2012 for me), Coldplay (insane Stadium show), Fleetwood Mac (Old but GREAT) Don’t forget to check out the BBC television documentary which follows Greg and the team in their wild adventure. SHARPEN UP!

A CLOSE

SHAVE! WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE

Attentio n all me n.

Are you sti ineffecti ll persisting w ith the ve and e n for purp ose elec tirely unsuitab le tric raz having ors whe as n on . The have? You are ?W on the mor ly way to have ell read nings is a shave the hon in and ver ourable y ma s cu li wet sha n e m e th ving, i.e . using h od of flannel, ot wate sh r, a razor. Y aving gel and a p ro p e our eve r rr looks a t the on ugged Mayhem ly way to ! shave.

STEP 4 STEP 1 The main essentials to a perfect shave are water and warmth. Soak a folded flannel or small towel in hot water and wrap it around the face for 15 seconds. This warms and softens the skin in readiness for shaving. Those who desire a smooth shave might wish to apply a pre-shave lotion to protect the skin as well as helping the razor to glide smoothly across the face.

STEP 2

STEP 3

Apply shaving cream/ gel using a shaving brush. A good one will lift and moisten the beard, preparing it for the shave. Always use a quality razor with the sharpest blades available. Cheap disposable razors have low-grade steel blades that bend when shaving. You may have a hankering for the ‘real deal’ of a cut throat razor but best to avoid these unless you’re a professional, an expert wet shaver, or Sweeney Todd.

Make sure you use a sharp blade which you warm under hot running water. Shave with the grain of your beard and, in awkward areas such as the chin and under the nose, move the blade sideways across the growth. Try not to shave against the grain as this pulls the skin in the wrong direction causing small cuts and ‘grazing’ to the skin and is the most common cause of ‘razor burn’, ingrown hairs and shaving rash.

After shaving, rinse the face thoroughly with cool water to close the pores and pat the face dry with a soft towel. A good wet shave exfoliates and cleanses the face, leaving smooth new skin and a healthy, clean appearance. Newly exfoliated skin needs to be protected from the elements, so for healthy skin it is important that men use a good quality after-shaving moisturizer or balm-try out a few samples if possible to see which ones suit your skin the best.

PIE W RITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE

A SLICE OF HUMBLE PIE!

In a culinary age where restaurants do their best to repel potential customers by including phrases like ‘drizzled’, ‘nest’ and, horror of horrors, ‘couscous’ on their menus, the pie remains a stand out and ever popular symbol of all that is good about traditional British cuisine. So popular that it has its very own week, seven days of pie-related wonder and goodness coming your way in March. Licking its hungry lips in anticipation, Mayhem! lifts the fluffy crust from the world of the pie and peers inside...

NATIONAL PIE WEEK? Yep, you’d better believe it. Pies are where it’s at – and this gravy-soaked week runs from 4th–10th March. Pies have had their moments in history with the term ‘Pie’ believed to be derived from the magpie’s habit of stealing shiny and valuable objects, hiding same within the confines of its nest. The first pies appeared in Egypt in around 9500 BC and early pies usually involved wrapping a sweet treat, such as honey, inside a cover of ground oats, wheat or barley, while a recipe for a chicken pie was found written on an ancient tablet in Iraq and was estimated to be from around 2000 BC! Wealthy Brits in Medieval times were devotees of what was known as ‘Surprise Pie’ – one which contained live animals which were released when the pie was

cut. Hence the line in the nursery rhyme referring to “four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie”. In 1644, however, Oliver Cromwell banned the eating of mince pies on Christmas Day, declaring it to be a ‘pagan pleasure’. The ban remained in place for 16 years, but what does he know? Nowadays a pie is defined as a food product that comprises pastry with an accompanying filling – simple as that!

WHAT’S THE MOST POPULAR? Steak and kidney remains the pie of pies in today’s Britain. However, it mustn’t rest on its laurels as an increasingly daring population takes slightly more exotic flavours into a steamy embrace – with lamb and mint, beef and ale, and chicken and herb all challenging its place as the UK’s no.1 pie.

THE

SPORTING YEAR AHEAD

2012 will surely be impossible to better, although whatever you do, don’t tell that to England’s cricketers Talk about difficult acts to follow. The Olympics. The Ryder Cup. The Tour de France. In sporting terms, 2013 certainly has its work cut out. November’s Sports Personality of the Year will be the litmus test. Will there be room for an Asheswinning Cook alongside Wimbledon champion Murray and Masters supremo McIlroy? Or are we back to also-rans and runners-up? Whether it’s pluck or glory we’re heralding in 10 months’ time, there’s enough on show to ensure another year of sofa-dwelling and sports love-ins.

GETTING A KICK OUT OF SPORTS!

FOOTBALL AND GOLF The 2011–2012 Premier League season was arguably the best since the League’s inception in 1992 – although, Man United fans might argue otherwise. And with Chelsea winning the Champions League, there’s a lot to live up to in 2013 – even after England’s traditional capitulation threatened to spoil the 2012 summer. Can United reclaim the prize by winning their 20th top-flight title? Or have Manchester City enough in them to overturn the mid-way seven-point deficit? And of course, the Champions League Final is back at Wembley this May. An English team has reached the final in the last seven of eight. And, even with just United and Arsenal left in the competition, it’d be daft to rule them out. This summer also sees the UEFA Women’s Euro 2013, with England having made it to the last 12. The Olympics did no harm to an increasingly popular sport – and the Euros should be no different. Before that, though, is The Masters (Augusta, 11th–14th April ). Can an English man end the golfing major drought? Or will the young Rory McIlroy add a green jacket to his US Open and PGA Championship victories? Forever lurking in the shadows is Tiger Woods, the four-time winner. His victory by 12 shots in 1997 remains one of his finest – and what a place Augusta would be for the 37-year-old to re-find form.

BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS TOUR OF AUSTRALIA With the Australian cricket first heading to England for the Ashes in July, the British and Irish Lions go the other way, on a rugby tour of Down Under. The Lions last visited in 2001, where they lost the Test series 2–1. Head coach Warren Gatland will be hoping to inspire the first series victory since 1997. It’s a tall order – but Gatland has an array of rugby talent at his disposal. The atmosphere will be intense, but for the first Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

time in over 15 years, there’s a real chance of victory for the Lions. Wimbledon and the Ashes might steal the headlines, but a victory Down Under might just amount to the highlight of the year.

WIMBLEDON There was a point where another defeat could have crushed Andy Murray. Having lost his first four grand slam finals (including last year’s Wimbledon), he emerged from 2012 as a gold-medal and US Open winner. There’s always near hysteria around Wimbledon – but this year may feel different. There’s a real sense that it could be Murray’s time – and the first British men’s victory since 1936. With his first grand slam victory on his CV, could the shackles have been lifted? Once again, it’ll hardly be easy. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will provide competition like no other. This is truly a golden age of tennis – but perhaps this is the year we put another nagging statistic to bed. The young Laura Robson – Murray’s mixed doubles partner at the Olympics – will be watched with interest.

THE ASHES England, victorious in 2009 and again in 2011/12, will be hoping to beat Australia for a third time in a row for the first time since 1981. Having slipped to number two in the rankings, following defeat to South Africa in August, England are currently four points ahead of third-placed Australia. The first test begins on 10th July, with the fifth test commencing 21st August, as the first of back-to-back Ashes series, with the next beginning in late November and ending early January 2014. A victory at both would be the greatest English dominance since the 1880s – although that may be getting ahead of ourselves. The standard we’ve set is high – now it’s time to go on and beat it. GET INVOLVED!

WHAT HAPPENS ON RED NOSE DAY? The BBC gives celebrities and comedians an entire evening to entertain the nation whilst urging them to donate generously. Basically, the participants do funny things for money. Helpful and entertaining at the same time, what can a person want more? 15th March is setting out to be colossal! It will achieve that with the help of the of seven ‘fun raisers’ in the faces of Jesse J, Miss Piggy, Jason Donovan, Keith Lemon, Helen Skelton, Mary Berry and Lenny Henry. They will raise funds in seven unique ways. One Direction will pitch in as well with their charity single ‘One Way or Another’ and most of its proceeds will be donated to Comic Relief.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE? If you would like for Red Nose Day to reach out to as many people as possible, you can help by either buying a red nose from high street shops such as Sainsbury’s and Oxfam or get your hands on the gorgeous Stella McCartney-designed Red Nose Day T-shirts which you can pick up from TK Maxx. Additional RND goodies, which are available in the shops, are Pin Badges, Wrist Bands, Deeley Boppers and Dinoroars.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE… Since 1985, Comic Relief has raised over £800 million to tackle poverty and social injustice. That is an incredible accomplishment, which has helped change the lives of many people. Mayhem! would strongly urge everyone to take part in it and donate, so that more people will once again start to believe that there is hope in life. After all, we are people and we should help and support those in need!

Red Nose Day is a part of Comic Relief and a time when comedy and charity go hand-in-hand in order to help some of the poorest and most unfortunate people in the UK and the rest of the world. The organisers of the event strive towards a world free from poverty. As stated on RND’s official website, their aim is ‘to bring about real and lasting change by tackling the root causes of poverty and social injustice, rather than simply treating the symptoms.’

A CHAT WITH…

Following their show in Portsmouth last month and the recent release of their second album ‘ARC’, we chat with bassist Jeremy Pritchard from Everything Everything…

EVERYTHING EVERYTHING INTERVIEW BY CHRIS DONNELLY

Welcome back guys – it feels like it’s been a while since we heard from you. Where have you been writing and recording? Thanks, it’s nice to be back. We wrote most of it in Manchester, in Blueprint studios which was vacated while Elbow toured the world. We then recorded it at RAK in London and a beautiful converted farmhouse studio called Angelic in the Northamptonshire countryside. Is it true that ‘Cough Cough’ really did originate from one of you having a cough and being inspired by the rhythms? Did it not seem a little crazy, even to you guys at the time, to be taking a cough as the basis of a track? Yeah the original ‘cough cough yeah’ rhythm came from Jonathan just 30 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

coughing and talking to his girlfriend. He improvised a little rhythmic demo on his phone, but then turned that into a more coherent laptop demo before the rest of us heard it, so it was more fully formed than a conversational coughing fit by the time we got down to structuring and arranging together, thankfully! He’s like that though, he’s constantly sparked and inspired by things he hears that he likes the sound or rhythm of, and language too.

Leeds playing the first show we’d played since ‘Cough Cough’ hit the radio and we all put bets on it. We were all between 40 and 50. I think Jonathan won by being closest at 43. We all still owe him a quid. We really didn’t expect ‘Cough Cough’ to be our first top 40, or even to ever have one. We thought it was a nice way to bridge between records and quite an impactful song to come back with. But we didn’t expect it to resonate in the way that it has.

You must be pleased that even before you released the album you managed to break into the top 40 for the first time? What did it feel like when you found out you’d managed that? Brilliant. We thought we were going to just miss out on it. We were in

Are there any other tracks that mean a lot to you, that you’d like to see people enjoying and maybe be as successful as ‘Cough Cough’? I sort of feel that ‘Kemosabe’ has been hard done by in terms of the video. It was on the radio a few weeks before

A CHAT WITH… we had the video, so it didn’t quite have that ‘all guns blazing’ approach that we took with ‘Cough Cough’. But I love the song perhaps more than ‘Cough Cough’ in some ways, and the video has a really extraordinary performance by a French breakdancer called Junior who was just incredible. Ideally it would have all been him but we thought we’d better put ourselves in it a bit..! It’s been great to hear it on the radio so much though. There are other songs on the album that mean a lot to me too of course, most of them in fact.

There does seem to be another side to the album beyond the likes of ‘Kemosabe’ and ‘Cough Cough’ – was that the plan and does that reflect where you’ve progressed to as a band? We always want to make fairly varied albums, I think. We didn’t plan specifically to have x numbers of slow, quiet songs and x number of fast loud songs, or anything like that though! On the whole I think ‘Arc’ is far darker than ‘Cough Cough’, ‘Kemosabe’ might seem to suggest, but even just the lyrics of those songs show where the album is coming from.

It sounds like there’s been an awful lot of different influences and changes when you’ve made ‘Arc’ compared to your previous album; how has your approach to song-writing and other elements of your music changed since your last outing? The change in sound on ‘Arc’, such as it is (because I actually don’t think there’s been a huge leap, more a natural progression), is down to a combination of things: The aspects of ‘Man Alive’ had endured for the four of us, and the things that we wanted to leave behind; wanting to pack as much excitement into the disciplined pop format of three and a half minutes as we would have done in five minutes on ‘Man Alive’; just growing up a bit; and (coincidentally) playing and writing together in larger spaces (Blueprint Studios and touring arenas supporting Snow Patrol) that would have swallowed up our fussier arrangements and forced us to be bolder and more vivid. We didn’t approach it all that way, there are longer songs and very subtle moments, and we wanted to retain our iconoclasm and would have found it hard not to. We wanted to be brave though, we didn’t have the confidence to make a record like this two or three years ago. ‘Man Alive’ is a lot to do with distraction really, we weren’t bold enough to say what we really meant, I guess.

If you’d been able to play the album backwards and have a hidden message on there, for everyone who listens, what would you all say? Don’t vote Conservative or Lib Dem next time, haven’t you learned your lesson? What’s your favourite lyric from the new stuff, and why? I can’t pick out a specific line but I love ‘Undrowned’ and its sense of ever-increasing mania and panic. What was it like supporting Muse recently? Great. Really good gigs. Lovely crowds, the further we got from home the better they got. It was cool to hang out with Muse and swap stories a bit. If you told me when I was 15 that I’d be in a band supporting Muse in European enormodomes eventually then I might not have believed you. Actually I might have, and I would have been ecstatic, and would probabaly have just left school immediately and waited for it to happen..! You’re off on your own tour of the UK and Europe in the next few months – have you got any favourite places that you want to go back to or want to visit for the first time in between playing and travelling? We really loved Prague for reasons we can’t really explain, although we’ve more recently narrowed it

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

down to being a beautiful place with lovely people and cheap beer. But we love being anywhere in Europe or the states and we always have a crazy time in Japan, which we love too. We want to get out to Australia this year too. But even in the UK, which is easy to overlook, we’re really looking forward to the upcoming tour in February. We think it’ll be our best ever UK tour as the album is still fresh to both us and the fans, but there is a new degree of familiarity with the songs for the fans. We’re interested to see which songs get the best reaction and work best in a live setting.

“We were called into Channel 4 news the other day, and sat around discussing the demise of HMV with John Snow…” How else do you pass the time when you’re cooped up travelling from show to show? We watch a mixture of good, indifferent and downright terrible films, listen to bits of music, argue and answer emails from our manager. Is playing live the best part of what you do as a band or are there other things you prefer? We love playing live but we love the studio too. It’s nice to vary things. The day to day of touring (everything except the show) can be a strain but it’s all worth it and we wouldn’t change anything (well, much) for the world. Many people have remixed your music in the past – do you enjoy hearing other people’s interpretations of your tracks? We do yeah. Sometimes we really love them. On the whole remixes are a way to reach an audience that may not hear you otherwise, and to experimentally recontextualise your own original intentions, all of which is a good thing. MARCH 2013 | MAYHEM!

A CHAT WITH…

It’s time to look beyond the instrumentation, music is far deeper than that. You guys tend to do some remixing often too – is there something in particular you enjoy about dabbling with music in that way? Yeah it’s fun to look at other people’s approaches and mix in some of our own. Alex does a lot of this and he says if he doesn’t know the song then he may not bother to listen to the original version, so he’s not overly influenced by it, he’ll just listen through the constituent parts and try to reassemble them in a new way and in a way that we find exciting. It must be quite daunting remixing though? After all, you took on a track by one of the biggest artists of the moment, Ben Howard, not so long ago?! To be honest, we were hardly aware of Ben then! It wasn’t until after Alex had the remix that we realised what a big deal he was. We knew he was good though, we loved the vocal stems we were sent. That’s one of my favourite ‘Everything Everything’ remixes actually. 32 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

What do you think 2013 will bring musically – surely it’s not the end of ‘indie’ as everyone panics every year? No, I keep hearing it’s the beginning anyway... I dunno, there’s always some conjecture about ‘Guitar Music’ (whatever that actually means) that goes round and round in circles. The term is too vague, somewhat anachronistic, and not important anyway. It’s time to look beyond the instrumentation, music is far deeper than that. Is there a particularly recent album, or track that you think should be ‘required listening’ for everyone right now? I loved David Byrne and St Vincent’s ‘Love This Giant’ LP from last year. If you could bring one extra person into the band, musical or not, who would you try to get and why? If Nirvana can do it with Sir Paul, then why can’t you guys? Most of what would be our choices

are now dead... I can’t choose. Maybe a decent bass player! A lot of famous people have been mentioning and getting behind your music too – what’s been the best or most surreal showbiz run-in you’ve had with any of them lately? Saw Spike Lee at Radio 1 today and was a bit gobsmacked and genuinely starstruck. Mike kept his cool by taking a Piriton tablet, for some reason. We were unexpectedly called into Channel 4 news the other day, and sat around discussing the demise of HMV with John Snow, who was brilliant. I felt like I’d known him all my life, which I suppose we all have, in one sense!

BEAT OF THE DRUM!

THE BOYS IN THE BAND Ask anybody up and down the country and they’ll most likely know Portsmouth for its naval links. But did you know it’s also home to the Royal Marines Band Service? Since 1996, the Royal Marines School Of Music has been based at HMS Nelson, training willing recruits to take on musical as well as combat roles since 1903 (its first headquarters being Eastney Barracks). So, polish up that bugle and quick march!

TRANCE MUSIC Ethnomusicologist Joseph Jordania has suggested that all military music has its roots in ‘battle trance’ – an early example of ritualistic behaviour among the first humans, involving groups engaging in collective singing, dancing and body-painting (an early example of almost shamanistic practice, you could say), in an effort to intimidate predators. The first record of anything beginning to resemble what we might call a military band dates from the Ottoman Empire of the 13th Century. 34 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

These were known as ‘mehters’, or ‘Janissary bands’ and used bass drums, bells, cymbals, horns and triangles alongside more traditional instruments. These fell out of favour by around 1826 after Sultan Mahmud II did away with the Janissary Corps (the regiment which gave the bands their alternative name). However, the first seeds of a revival were planted in 1911, and had grown by 1953 – with bands still playing an important ceremonial part in the modernday Turkish military, as well as influencing much of what we hear the bands on these shores playing in their ceremonial, parade and concert functions among others.

BOOTS ON THE GROUND, FEET TAPPING All British Army musicians belong to the Corps of Army Music, although until 1749 they were actually hired civilians working under the Colonel commanding a regiment. As they caught on, they progressed to become regular soldiers playing music to boost morale as they went about active service with their units – stretcher-bearing was added to their duties from the dawn of the 19th Century. Most of these men would have belonged to the Royal Artillery Band, the oldest such military band in the country, which can trace its genesis to the late 15th Century, though it was not officially recognised until 1762. Just as now, musicians would have had to be ‘double-handers’, equally comfortable playing stringed and wind instruments. As a sobering statistic, 225 musicians from such bands had been killed in action by the end of World War II, and they continue to serve in conflicts today, with six Royal Marines bands based around the country (as well as Portsmouth, HMS Collingwood has one, making the South Coast a proud bastion). Musicians train at the School Of Music for two years following 15 weeks of standard military training, with further options open to them as they progress through their service – including Junior and Senior Command courses, with the aim of becoming a Band Corporal or Sergeant before attempting to take the step up to Bandmaster or Director Of Music.

A CATCH UP WITH…

A unique talant that is Tom Baxter will be passing through Portsmouth’s Wedgewood rooms this month to share with us his latest work. Stripping things back to just piano, violin and percussion it’s one not to miss. We catch up with Tom ahead of the show to find out how travelling across India in his escape from music has only inspired him further. INTERVIEW BY DANIEL TIDBURY

How would you describe your music to anyone not familiar with it? Emotional, raw and passionate. Can you tell us about the new album ‘The Uncarved Block’? The Uncarved Block is about things in their natural state, uncontaminated beauty. I wanted to present them in their purest form on record: me plus guitar or piano. Can you talk us through your writing process? Does it come easy or do have to hide away with a guitar? It’s definitely a process! Personally, I have to hide away with a guitar, and sometimes it’s like pulling teeth, other times it’s like opening the curtains in a dark room and being flooded with golden sunlight. I’ve recently discovered the joy in teaching others how to access their creativity and, in turn, my own. You’ve met and worked with some notable people, was there anyone that made a real impact to your outlook or attitude? I got to work with composer David Arnold on Shirley Bassey’s album, The Performance. He’s become a good friend. A brilliant musician, very funny, and very switched-on: he knows what is nonsense and what is not! You’ve had the opportunity to record in LA, can you tell us about that experience?

It was a great experience. We set up on a ranch owned by two fabulous eccentrics who are great friends. It’s a unique place, there was every sort of animal running around us and in the middle of it all we built a studio and made music! Not only do you write and perform your music, you create much of your own album art also. Is this just another creative outlet or something much deeper? I went to art school and had visions of becoming a great painter, but I found it so isolating and solitary that music took a stronger position in my life. Combining art with music helps keeps my feet on the ground and gives me a space to escape to. You spent nearly a year travelling across India with a flask of whiskey and your guitar. Can you talk us through the experience and how it’s altered your perspective? I got to be a kid again and explore an awe-inspiring country on an old Enfield! Landscapes, horizons, dust on my face, guitar on my back and whiskey in my glass. India reminded me of beauty, and inspired me to try and paint that in my music. Your roots are seeped in folk, but your music features a touch of Spanish flamenco. What is it that draws you to that style of music and playing? My parents were folk musicians and I guess I absorbed that

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

subconsciously growing up. When I write songs I tend to become more folksy as I go on. The acoustic guitar is so easy to carry around everywhere that things can wind up that way, but I’m interested in so many different types of music I try to allow them all to influence my songs as much as I can. Flamenco guitar is such a beautiful technique and takes dedication and skill to master – I only skim the surface. It speaks to the soul. I hope I capture some of the passion, drama, delicacy and finesse in my music. You’re on tour again which is very exciting, and we’re looking forward to your show in Portsmouth. It’s not your first time to the city, so what can we expect this time around? I’m really looking forward to sharing new tracks with my audience. I don’t think any songwriter is sure if a song ‘works’ until it’s in the live environment: the audience help define a song. That’s part of the joy of playing live, and I love working a crowd, getting them on my side. I’ll be playing my songs in a stripped back form with piano, violin and percussion. Is there anything else you would like our readers to know? Read the poetry of Rumi translated by Colman Barks – it’s beautiful! Check out Tom at the Portsmouth’s Wedgewood Rooms on 8th March. WHAT EXACTLY IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?

WHY ARE APPRENTICESHIPS VALUABLE FOR COMPANIES?

Apprentices are paid employees that learn their vocation ‘on the job’ as opposed to academic study. They work alongside experienced professionals to gain nationally recognised qualifications, with the average apprenticeship lasting between one and four years depending on the industry sector. With over 1,200 roles covered, a wide variety of careers can be pursued this way. (We’re looking at you, aspiring engineers, accountants and nurses.)

In return for their time and money, companies are able to invest in their own futures by hand-training the experts of tomorrow. Furthermore, hiring apprentices leads to sustainable business growth, consumer confidence, and heightened team morale. It’s no surprise then that over 100,000 employers in over 160,000 workplaces in England offer apprenticeships.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BECOMING AN APPRENTICE? Perhaps more appealing than ever given the current financial climate, a major advantage of choosing an apprenticeship is the paid training you receive. The minimum wage an apprentice will take home is £2.60 per hour, although the average is around £170 per week. And there is good news if you are between 16–18 years old: the Government will fully fund your training. Insider knowledge, career contacts, earning while you learn: what’s not to like? 38 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED IN NATIONAL APPRENTICE WEEK THIS MARCH? The best port of call is the website of the National Apprenticeship Service which organises the week (www.apprenticeships.org.uk), where you can download a toolkit that will help you create your own event. If you are a school or college student, speak to your teachers and get them involved too! Having said this, support on any scale is appreciated. If you have Twitter, send a tweet to @apprenticeships with the hashtag #NAW2013 to share your thoughts about apprenticeships, or even your own success story. To advertise in Mayhem! CELEBRATE THE WOMEN

WRITTEN BY JENNIE RAWLING

GIRL POWER!

IN YOUR LIFE

From the early suffragettes in the 1800s to ‘girl power’ in the 1990s, the role of women in society has often been in the spotlight. The 8th March is International Women’s Day, a chance to celebrate women and their achievements across the world.

A communist called Clara Zetkin organised the first International Women’s Day over a hundred years ago. She campaigned for women’s rights through socialism, and originally called the event International Working Women’s Day.

IS IT STILL RELEVANT TODAY? According to Shonagh Dillon, Chief Executive of Aurora New Dawn, the answer is ‘yes’: “International Women’s Day is still incredibly relevant for women in our society. Yes, a lot has already been achieved, but there’s a lot of work still to be done.” Shonagh stresses the importance of not growing complacent. “It’s important to celebrate women and their achievements but we also need to focus on what needs working on, and how we can develop and grow this to eventually eliminate all discrimination against women.”

HOW IS THE DAY CELEBRATED? This year, local support group Aurora New Dawn are holding a Butterfly Masquerade Ball in Portsmouth to mark the occasion. The event will include a champagne reception, threecourse meal, dancing and prizes for Best Male/Female Mask and Best Masked Group. There will also be a special auction, with prizes including a professional race-driving session at Silverstone and acting lessons with Holby City actor Matt Chambers. Portsmouth Football Club helped organise and will be hosting the event.

A WHITE RIBBON CITY Portsmouth is one city that’s already working hard to tackle the issue. In 2010 Portsmouth City Council was awarded White Ribbon City status, showing its commitment to tackling domestic abuse in the city. Strong, independent and successful women across the UK are ‘doing it for themselves’. As a mature student with two children, entrepreneur Rachel Lowe worked as a taxi driver to fund her degree at the University of Portsmouth. Undeterred by a frosty reception on BBC 2’s Dragons’ Den, she went on to establish the ‘Destination’ board game brand and ‘She Who Dares’ gift range, winning several awards along the way. In 2009 she received an MBE for Services to Business.

REMEMBER THE PAST, LOOK TO THE FUTURE International Women’s Day is celebrated all around the world and is a national holiday in several countries. It’s a day to reflect, celebrate and look to the future. June Purvis, Emeritus Professor of Women’s and Gender History at the University of Portsmouth, sums it up perfectly: “It reminds us of what women have achieved in the past and what more remains to be done so that women can walk in equality, side by side with men.” MARCH 2013 | MAYHEM!

LOOKING AFTER THE OLD LADY!

MOTHER’S

DAY! Mayhem! makes sure its card and the bunch of flowers from the local Shell garage are safely bought and tucked away somewhere first…before taking a look at the yearly Oedipus rush that is Mothering Sunday...

WHY MOTHERING SUNDAY? It’s a day of celebrating Motherhood – in all its guises – Mothers, Grandparents, Mothers-in-Law, even Stepmothers. And, as we finally lurch into Spring, a time to recognise the creation of new life and it’s coming into being throughout all of nature.

WHEN IS IT HELD?

the sort of Unless you wan t to unleash en of the apocaly pse, like s of the fou r hor sem The reason? It ’s March into your memory. our sins , the wrath peril. Becaus e for all of on her that mig ht issu e from a Mum

THAT ALL SOUNDS A BIT INVOLVED! Well you don’t have to do all of that you know! Most Mums will admit that the most special thing for them would be just to be remembered and appreciated on that day, and, if it does mean that hastily purchased box of chocolates, then they’ll know that it is, above all, the thought that counts.

IS IT YET ANOTHER ‘AMERICANISM’? Not at all! In British days of yore, and we’re talking the 16th Century here, the traditional fast during

Lent was ‘suspended’ on Mothering Sunday so that a light fruit cake called a Simnel could be eaten by a mother and her family.

IT’S NOT JUST COMMERCIAL NONSENSE THEN? Nope. Like Valentine’s Day, it’s now a major day of celebration and relevant tat will be everywhere as the day itself approaches. But the day and its meaning is as old as the proverbial hills and, with 365 days warning every year – there’s no reason to forget. Besides, why should you? If it wasn’t for her, you wouldn’t be reading this!

Mothering Sunday is held on the fourth Sunday of lent – or exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. This means it always falls at around the same time of year, from around mid-March to mid-April.

HOW IS IT CELEBRATED? For most it’s the opportunity to rush out of the door at 7:30am on that morning to join the panicked rush for the last of the cards as well as a box of chocolates. Others may commemorate the day by cooking breakfast and serving it to Mum as she has a lie-in – thus risking spoiling her day by giving her a dose of botulism. Or, if you’re a seasoned Mothering Sunday pro, by accompanying her to a special church service, ideally one held at the church where her children were christened. 48 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

IT’S ALL IN THE MIND!

IRRITABLE BOWEL? WRITTEN BY CLAIRE LINCOLN

THE SERIOUS STUFF – THE MEDICAL RESEARCH The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and The British Medical Association (BMA) both recommend hypnotherapy to alleviate IBS symptoms. And clinical trials show that hypnosis can substantially improve the symptoms over an eight-course treatment plan, with benefits continuing for upto two years after treatment.

act on a hug ely neg ative imp lly you ’re efu Hop s. live ’s people bou ts of but, people can hav e of being. all very unhappy states e anxiet y people can exp erienc

HEALTH AND MIND INTERTWINED? Could how you think affect symptoms in a positive way? Could you imagine yourself healthier? Could you use your mind to improve an upset stomach or even alleviate the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Well, surprisingly, your mind can actually have a huge impact on your health. IBS is one such problem which can benefit hugely and there is plenty of research and clinical trials to prove it. How on earth can your mind do it though? 50 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME AND HYPNOTHERAPY Well, all that research and those clinical trials have been used with hypnotherapy. Now those two subjects together could strike fear into some, imaginations running wild with visions of being made to jump around like a rabbit or eat a raw onion thinking it’s an apple! That in itself could be a disaster for someone suffering from IBS! So let’s set the record straight and be clear what hypnotherapy actually is! Hypnosis is a naturally-occurring psychological and physiological state. It’s generally a collaborative process (you can practice Self Hypnosis). The therapist simply provides guidance to help people use their imagination, create positive emotions and rehearse different behaviours to make improvements in their life or, in this case, their gut.

Professor Peter Whorwell, Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at Manchester Royal Infirmary, has been researching gut-directed hypnosis for over 20 years and believes that IBS is ideal for treatment with hypnosis and has seen success rates of about 70% in these trials. So how does it work? The commonly used term is ‘guided imagery’. The hypnotherapist will take groups into hypnosis and then use all sorts of imagery to help alleviate the symptoms. For example, if you imagined a storm representing your stomach or gut and then slowly and easily a gentle wind (no pun intended, honestly) starts to blow away the storm, creating a calm environment, perhaps even a cooling soothing environment. By focusing the mind in this way it does actually create change in the body. If you would like to learn how to manage the symptoms of IBS yourself this hypnotherapist is running courses to help people with IBS www.inmindhypnotherapy.co.uk.

The former Darling Bud of May waxes lyrical on script appeal, on-screen embraces and why Matt Damon is on her Christmas list. No-one can ever accuse the ‘Jones Douglas’ household of being run of the mill, but one assumes it comes with the territory when mum and dad are a dynamic, Oscarwinning powerhouse couple. Still, it must be somewhat unusual when young Dylan and Carys come home from school and learn that mum was kissing ‘Dragon Tattoo’ actress Rooney Mara while dad was necking Matt Damon.

It’s funny, when Matt Damon was kissing Michael, he closed his eyes and pretended he was kissing me.”

“He said that to Michael. Matt was closing his eyes and kissing Michael and pretending he was kissing me, and I thought that was one of the biggest compliments I’ve ever had! It’s so screwed up.”

Catherine adds why a script needs to be special to tear the devoted wife and mum away from her family. “It takes me a lot to leave my kids and my husband and my dogs, so this had all the elements that got me straight on a plane the moment that Steven asked me to do this.”

EASTER! NICE BUNS!

WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE

As with Christmas, the celebration of Easter has numerous in variations around the world, all of which have one theme , common – rebirth and the coming of new life. In the UK however the it remains a Christian festival and holiday that celebrates on. resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixi

e eggs, Sombre indeed, but where does that all fit in with chocolat the top fluffy baby chickens and hot cross buns? Mayhem! unwraps depths… swirling Easter’s at look a takes and of a crème egg

AND HOT CROSS BUNS? Funnily enough, these are reckoned to go back almost as far as Easter. They are traditionally eaten on Good Friday with the cross meant to symbolise the pending crucifixion – although it’s thought that the early Saxons ate similar cakes with the cross said to represent the four quarters of the moon and the goddess Eostre – from which the name Easter is thought to have come.

SO IF HE DIED, WHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?

IT’S ALL ABOUT THIS JESUS BLOKE THEN? As far as the core of this country’s celebration is concerned: yes and, let’s face it, we primarily celebrate Christmas because of him as well. Easter Sunday is the third day out of five consecutive ones that are held to commemorate his life, death and rebirth, starting on the previous (Maundy) Thursday and ending on the (Easter) Monday. It’s a longer celebration than Christmas and, for most believers, a much more important one as well. 54 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

Seems odd doesn’t it? As executions went, crucifixion was a particularly horrible way to die – a lengthy and painful process involving suffocation, loss of body fluids and multiple organ failure. Such was Jesus’ torment during his struggles, a Roman soldier is said to have pierced him with a spear in order to quicken his death. It isn’t his execution or death that is celebrated, however, it’s the fact that two days after he was put to death (on Good Friday) he rose from the dead. That rebirth has become a symbol of hope for us all, whether through faith or with the arrival of Spring with its warmer days and new life abounding – hence the association with lambs, baby chicks and, of course, the vessels from which that new life came – eggs.

WHATEVER. I’M JUST GOING TO ENJOY THE TIME OFF... And so you should. After all, the reason that devout believers will tell you that you can choose to do just that over the Easter period is because the man they regard as the son of God had himself put to death, deliberately, on behalf of all mankind – then, now and in the future. Regardless of your own faith, historical evidence not only points to Jesus being a very real person but also one who died a pretty horrible death for the sake of his faith – not something most of us would be willing to do, whatever our faith is. So whatever you believe, take time out to celebrate new life and new beginnings of all kinds this Easter.

We’ve all faced that moment post-hangover in which we crave nothing more than a hearty full English breakfast with grilled bacon, or a simple bacon sandwich, right? But there’s more to it than just a simple desire to line our stomachs after a few too many pints the night before – and that’s why we’re marching under the ‘Red, White and Bacon’ flag as part of Love Pork’s Bacon Connoisseurs Week, set to run from 18th–24th March! Let your pans sizzle and stop drooling as we tell you more.

THIS LITTLE PIGGY Of course not all little piggies get to stay home or go to market, as in the nursery rhyme. What happens to those selected to go to slaughter? Usually it’s side or back cuts from these brave squealing soldiers which bring home the bacon (the name derived from a multi-purpose Old High German word, bacho, meaning ‘side of bacon’, ‘ham’ or ‘buttock’). Commonly in the United Kingdom, bacon in itself is taken to mean a cut

of back bacon, though slices from the belly of the pig are known as ‘streaky bacon’ thanks to a higher fat content. Smoked and unsmoked are equally common in your local butchers or supermarket, but before it makes its way to your plate it is often cured (injected with or soaked in brine) or dry cured (using salt). Either way, it can be good for you! Great news indeed for all faithful members of the ‘Red, White and Bacon’ brigade, you’ll surely agree? Just listen to the facts! MARCH 2013 | MAYHEM!

BOOZE BAROMETER!

YOUR ROUND! MAYHEM!’S

Sure, it’s not your round, so “make mine a double” we hear you say. Ever stopped to think about the calories consumed and coins out of your purse in every drink you sip? Mayhem! calls time on the booze and gets to the bottom of what your daily tipple means for your waist line and your wallet…

CALORIE COUNTER

HOW TO CUT BACK ON YOUR POISON

WINE A standard glass of wine contains a huge 126 calories and is just over two units of alcohol so a bottle could be about 315 calories. Drinking one glass of wine a week would cost you a whopping £182.00 a year.

SPIRITS One double spirit with a mixer is two units of alcohol (about half the recommended daily allowance for a male). That’s a massive 173 calories in just one glass and drinking one of these a week would cost you around £208.00 a year. Adding the mixer makes your drink last longer but also adds to the calories you’re packing away. 58 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

BEER AND CIDER A pint of anything ale related is around two units of alcohol. This is pretty much the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for women and equates to a ridiculous 215 calories. Drinking just one pint a week might mean the most fatty points, but would only cost £130 a year. If you make it a shandy it’s going to be less alcohol units for you.

ALCOPOPS One bottle of this sweet stuff is about 1.4 units but still crams in a huge 198 calories. So after six of these ‘easy drinkers’, you would have had 1,188 calories which is over half the RDA for a female (and probably very drunk!) Just one of these a week in your daily shop will cost you £130 a year.

BREAK THE HABIT If you’re used to pulling the ring pull back or twisting the cork at a certain time of the day, break it by doing something else. PACE YOURSELF Drink a glass of water or a soft drink in between each alcoholic drink. DROP AN ABV That’s Alcohol By Volume, so simply swap your usual drink for one with less alcohol content. Check the sides of the bottle because these often have fewer calories too!

LOOK AFTER YOUR PLANET!

If you care about our Mother Earth, you’ll want to listen up! Across 22nd–23rd March, World Water Day and Earth Hour could inspire us all to make a better world – and you don’t have to chain yourself to a tree like Michael Jackson in the Earth Song video, unless you really want to.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE We’re all guilty of taking the easy availability of fresh water for granted, and the United Nations stepped up to the plate with World Water Day in March 1993. It had first been recommended at the previous year’s UNCED (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development), with the 22nd set aside as the lucky day. Since then it has set out to deal with many of the big issues surrounding the world’s water – and this year marks the International Year Of Water Co-Operation (as passed in a UN General Assembly resolution). To read more, see www.un.org and don’t be afraid to make a splash by checking out www.unwater.org/ watercooperation2013/campaign.

NOT COSTING THE EARTH Back on dry land, Earth Hour follows on 23rdMarch. From 8.30pm, the world population is encouraged to switch off its lights for just one hour in the fight against global warming – and it’s about as far from the Dark Ages as it’s possible to get! More than 7,001 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2012, sending a powerful message for action to save the planet. Why not go one better this year, as well as committing to the ‘I Will If You Will’ challenge – pledging a gift in return for others making a similar commitment to the environment? If this sounds like your idea of fun, visit www.youtube. com/earthhour. All small sacrifices in return for the future of our planet and the great work of the WWF (that’s World Wildlife Fund, not the wrestling people, though if you’d like to go a few rounds in the ring in return for an environmental pledge we won’t stop you, though we will point out the many health and safety ramifications, whether it’s another human being or an animal you’re thinking of going up against). But sports entertainment or no sports entertainment, the Earth matters, and we ought to eventually be able to give a decent answer to the King Of Pop’s poignant question ‘What have we done to the world?’, no more ‘crying Earth’ or ‘weeping shores’, just a better world for all.

A DRINK TO GOOD HEALTH

H2O HEALS! WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE

It’s all around us, it’s natural, it doesn’t contain horse meat and it’s still relatively cheap. And versatile? There are 1001 things you can use it for. But, above all: it’s good for us, an ancient and most pure of healing elixirs. What is it? Water! So valuable and perhaps the most important natural resource on the planet – which is nearly 75% water anyway – yet one we all take for granted. Mayhem! takes a refreshing swig and proclaims water to be H2 Whoa!

A DRINK TO GOOD HEALTH

DO YOU DRINK ENOUGH? Health experts unanimously concur that we all need to be drinking at least 2.5 litres of water a day (that’s a little over 4 pints) just to keep ourselves hydrated. The human body is 75% water (the same as the earth – coincidence?) and, if we drop that margin by just 2% we become dehydrated. How many of these symptoms are familiar to you? Tiredness, Headaches, Aching Joints, Urinary Infections, Slow Metabolism, Low Immunity, Stress, Weight Gain, Indigestion, Dark/Smelly Urine. All can be a sign of dehydration – which, if taken to extreme levels, can be very serious from a health point of view. That 2.5 litres a day therefore, is quite important and should, however possible, become part of your day to day living.

BUT I DRINK AT LEAST THAT AMOUNT OF TEA/COFFEE/ JUICES/BEER ETC! Many other drinks have potentially harmful additives – caffeine in tea and coffee; sugar in juices and fizzy drinks and, of course, alcohol in your pint of beer. Water is not without its own possible dodgy ingredients of course – but it is, by far, the best and most healthy option.

SO IT’S A LIQUID EQUIVALENT OF TAKING ‘FIVE A DAY’? Yes. Just as it’s crucial for us to look to eat at least five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day, we should be looking to add drinking enough water to that daily regime.

CAN I TAKE IT ALL AT ONCE? No, this can be extremely dangerous in some cases and will make you feel, at the very least, bloated and uncomfortable. The best thing to do is to sip your way through the recommended amount slowly and steadily throughout the day.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW? Feeling thirsty is the first symptom of mild dehydration – obviously! However, feeling tired may also be a sign that you are not drinking enough. Just a 2% drop in your daily recommended hydration can slow down recall, reactions and cause difficulty in focusing on tasks. But cracking open another can of Red Bull might just be the worst thing you can do as far as your body is concerned – sip away steadily throughout the day to avoid the chance of this happening. AS WITH ALL MATTERS RELATING TO PERSONAL HEALTH AND WELL BEING, THIS ARTICLE IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. IF YOU WOULD LIKE FURTHER ADVICE ON DIET AND LIQUID INTAKES, ALWAYS CONSULT A QUALIFIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL.

LOOKING AFTER THE PEOPLE!

THE BRAND WRITTEN BY JAMIE HARRIS

Fairtrade’s purpose is to stand up for the rights of small-scale farmers and workers who can often have prices squeezed by large companies looking to slash costs and increase their own profits. Under the Fairtrade scheme these farmers are in a stronger position to set better prices regardless of the market price. Buyers must pay the market price when it’s higher than the Fairtrade minimum price, making it fairer all-round!

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT Every year, Fairtrade Fortnight is celebrated ORIGINS across the world from the Although the idea of ‘fair trade’ has been around for more than 40 years, 25th February until 10th the labelling scheme we’re familiar with today didn’t get off until the late March, with a number of 1980s. The scheme initially started special events including small with the first label appearing on coffee in Dutch supermarkets in fetes, fairs, fashion shows Now they can be seen on many and much more. Giving workers the fair share of profits they’re entitled to can improve the quality of their lives and enables them to work towards a future out of poverty. The Fairtrade standards also protect workers’ basic rights, many of which you would expect working in the UK. These include health and safety standards, no discrimination and no illegal child labour. So, making the change to a Fairtrade product provides you with the reassurance of knowing it was produced in a fair environment with fair profit to its producers.

LOCAL SUPPORT Supporters in Portsmouth and surrounding areas are holding a number of events where Fairtrade products will be on offer. A Fairtrade stall on Commercial Road was used to launch the event and there are still so many ways to take part! WEAR A HAT ON MARCH 28TH and join the nation in helping to raise funds for brain tumour research On the 28th of March 2013, Brain Tumour Research, along with our brilliant family of member charities, fundraising groups and supporters, will be encouraging everyone across the UK to wear a hat. Our annual Wear A Hat Day is the UK’s premier brain tumour awareness event. From schools, colleges and universities to shops, offices and clubs, we are asking school children, students, workers, indeed everyone, to get involved. From best hat and hat throwing competitions to passing the hat to collect donations, hundreds of organisations and thousands of people around the country will be helping to fund the fight against brain tumours. Sue Farrington-Smith, Director of Brain Tumour Research, comments: “Research into brain tumours receives less than one per cent of national cancer research spending in the UK yet this devastating disease kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Wear A Hat Day is a fun way of increasing awareness and getting people raising money for an often overlooked form of cancer.

As well as donating a pound or two to wear a hat for the day, you can also easily raise even more money for Brain Tumour Research by selling the four Wear A Hat Day badges designed by the charity for this event. With new designs each year, these badges have become popular and collectable. This year’s designs include a Mortarboard (as worn by academic students and staff), an Easter Bonnet, a Builder’s Hard Hat and a Royal Crown – one to suit every taste. The badges will be available to order from the Brain Tumour Research charity in February as part of its fundraising pack. All the badges produced for Wear A Hat Day can be sold before, during and after the event itself – a great way of keeping the fundraising going with minimal effort! Rachel Trevor-Morgan, Milliner to Her Majesty The Queen has also agreed to help by providing a design for a unique hat brooch, which will be fashioned by the charity as a limited edition in support of Wear A Hat Day this year. Rachel comments: “I am delighted to support Brain Tumour Research and Wear A Hat Day. I am always trying to encourage people to wear more hats – what a perfect way to raise awareness and make a statement for such an important cause.

The brooch will be available from 1st March for a suggested donation of £10. Orders are encouraged now for what will likely be a fast-selling collector’s item! Brain Tumour Research is the only national brain tumour charity in the UK that is dedicated to granting 100 per cent of its funds to continuous and sustainable scientific research. In collaboration with its member charities and fundraising groups, the charity jointly raised over £2.5 million in 2011 and Brain Tumour Research now supports an annual £1 million programme of research into brain tumours at a dedicated Centre of Excellence in the University of Portsmouth. Funding for this research has been woefully inadequate for far too long. By getting involved, you will be generating vital funds for a new Centre of Excellence in 2013 and helping research to move another step closer to finding a cure.

GET A BREW ON! TEA FOR TWO!

WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY

Surely nobody in this country needs an excuse to stick the kettle on and make a nice warm cup of tea? Indeed, it’s part of our national DNA! It makes everything better, and that’s why we’re proud to rifle through the cupboards for some teabags, get the kettle whistling and support Dementia UK’s ‘Time For A Cuppa’ campaign.

HELLO NURSE Who better to tell you just what your generosity will do than the charity themselves? ‘Dementia UK is a national charity committed to improving quality of life for all people affected by dementia. It supports mental health nurses specialising in dementia care, Admiral Nurses. Admiral Nurses provide a lifeline to hundreds of people across the country. This can include psychological support to help family carers understand and deal with their feelings, practical advice and information on dementia, its impact and how to cope, referrals to other appropriate services and liaison with other professionals to provide support when it’s most needed. Admiral Nurses work with family carers of all ages and backgrounds, tailoring support to their individual needs and challenges.’ Worth bearing in mind, as it is anticipated that around one million people will be diagnosed with dementia in the next 10 years – and we can all do our bit to help when the only weapons we need for the fight are family, friends, mugs, teabags, hot water, milk and sugar! 68 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT TEA OH I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE TEA-SIDE We think we’ll take a leaf out of the Mad Hatter’s book from ‘A lice In Wonderland’ – Lewis Carroll devotes the whole of chapter seven of his masterwork to ‘A Mad Tea-Party’, and what could possibly be a more fun way to spend the afternoon than creating your own Wonderland? Sounds like the average morning break at Mayhem! Towers, but if you can do better you could win a luxury tea set at www.timeforacuppa.org. If that’s not an incentive we don’t know what is! CAN’T LIVE WITH THEM…

REASONS COUPLES STAY IN BAD

RELATIONSHIPS

It’s the common phrase ‘can’t live with them, can’t live without them’ and your friends are all screaming from the outside for you to get out, but when it comes to relationships, why do so many of us stay in bad ones?

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT THEM!

I’D RATHER BE WITH THEM THAN BE ALONE Often people end up staying in a relationship through fear of being alone. It doesn’t seem to matter how bad it gets, the familiar ‘but if you leave them, you will be alone’ voice pops into our head. We torture ourselves with the idea that if we remove this person from our lives we will end up as either the bitter old cat lady or an alcoholic geezer on a park bench talking to squirrels. Really? Wake up. You have years ahead and plenty of time to find ‘the one’ I know id rather be alone for a bit than in this twisted relationship which is causing more pain.

I’D MISS THEM IF THEY WERE GONE How long are you going to be alone for? You’re hot, you’re smart and the world is your oyster. Open your eyes to the possibility that you probably only really miss the company and not that individual. You keep latching on to all the happy memories, but was it because they were there, or are the activities just fabulous days out which would have been amazing, no matter who the company was? Ps: if it takes breaking up to realise how much you value them, something was wrong at the start.

WHEN WE GET ON, IT’S AMAZING Weigh up the good vs the bad. If you can honestly count more good times than bad and struggle to remember anything negative, sounds like you’re being hasty. If you really can only remember a handful of fun times (albeit that they are mind-blowing) perhaps it’s time to cut your losses.

I TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED OK, so you weren’t the dream girlfriend or boyfriend that you should have been. You feel guilty and it’s eating you up. Either talk the guilt away to a mate and start changing your ways or realise that you weren’t really dreadful, just a little less attentive than they deserved, but time to cut your losses and remember the lesson for the next time.

WE ALWAYS END UP TOGETHER They’ve cheated, they’ve argued, they’ve worn you down and you still go back. Or maybe it’s the other way round, and no matter what you do, they can’t let you go. STOP! If they broke up with you, remember they did that despite all your amazing qualities, and still chucked you. If you did the dumping, there was a reason for it, so make sure you remember it! Remember: there’s plenty more fish in the sea. Get out there with your rod and find the catch of the day!

HMM…BET ITS REALLY POPULAR WHATS IT ALL THEN? ABOUT THEN? You bet. In 2012, a total of It’s an international online mathematics competition. Yes, while most people prefer to hide behind an online alias of one syllable and to spend their cyber time masquerading as Nazis or saving a beautiful Princess from Orcs most foul, these online warriors do battle over equations and formulae so long and complicated you could hide an elephant in them. 72 MAYHEM! | MARCH 2013

nearly six million students from 103 different nations took part and, let’s face it, be as sceptical as you like, how quickly can you even think of 103 different countries? There are four different age categories in all. These are four to seven years; eight to 10; 11 to 13 and 14 to 18 years of age. The winner in the latter group, the mysterious ‘Kaya G’ came from the Somerset College in Australia.

BUT MATHS IS FOR GEEKS! Not so. Maths has always long been considered one of the disciplines to be acquainted with. An excellence in the subject can open up professional doors that most of us can only dream about, e.g. senior positions in Accountancy, Law, Medicine, IT and Technology, Astronomy... the list is endless, in fact, it’s said that having a good degree in Mathematics can open up professional opportunities for the successful graduate into just about any profession you can care to name – and a few that you won’t even have heard of.

SO WHEN IS IT THIS YEAR? 7th March. If you want a closer look, or even want to have a go at a ‘fast paced one minute arithmetic race’ you can visit the official website worldeducationgames.com. MAYHEM! MEETS…

New York legend, Huey Morgan frontman of the once enormous Fun Lovin’ Criminals drops into the Wedgewood Rooms this month with his New Yorker friends to blow the roof off! We go all gangster with the main man to find out what’s been going down! The album is called ‘Say It To My Face’ – what can you tell us about the album and how it’s come about? The album grew out of a character I created for a novel I was writing called ‘Tommy Pace’. Tommy is an ex-marine and ends up in the music business as a performer and then promptly vanishes. I started writing songs in the Tommy Pace character or headspace to get to know him and some of these songs went on to become ‘Huey and the New Yorkers’. We’ve also heard some interesting track names – ‘Dirty Bird’, ‘New York Bluez’, ‘Shaniqua’, ‘Christmas By The Side Of The Road’ – what can we expect when we get a listen? Some damn fine music played by some damn fine musicians. Lately you’ve been delving into radio. What’s that been like? Lately? I’ve been doing this for almost five years, got two shows on the BBC! I’m discovering music everyday that I never heard before; that has been the best part. You also pop up in Plan B’s video for ‘Prayin’ a few years back, now. What was it like working with Ben and being on set for that? Ben is a good bro, and I think he is very talented. He knows what he wants to do and that is a huge asset for him as a creative force. Did you get a vibe that Ben was a talent to watch back then?

It wasn’t that long ago, but he always struck me as a man who, despite his age and circumstances growing up, had a vision. That is what we need more of in the showbiz world. You were the original ‘king of music’ to many people, but who do you look up to today as ‘the king’? I look back to the men and women who paved the way for guys like me. My fellow DJ’s and musicians could do better if they had a sense of history, and not always looking to the horizon for the next big thing, because it might be right under their noses. Which band or artist last gave you goosebumps and how? Assuming that is, you get goosebumps at all… I have heard Gary Clark Jr. and he is the goosebump guy for me right now. he has a deep sense of history and uses that to explore his talent in ways that make me jump. You opened a tattoo shop in London last year called ‘The Love Hate Social Club’. Can you tell us about that? My dear friend Ami James from ‘Miami Ink’ and ‘NY Ink’ TV shows is my partner and we run the best tattoo parlor in Europe. It’s a place without peer, if you want the best body art; we are THE place to go. Hands down the best artists in the world rotate through our salon. It is also a gallery space that will feature and celebrate art in all its forms.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

You’re starting to play some live shows with just you and your guitar – are you looking forward to the dates or are you secretly a little nervous about being up on stage with nowhere to hide? I don’t get nervous. We did a show at Bush Hall in London last year and blew the roof off that place, and this new promo tour will show just how we do it. I urge y’all not to miss these shows; you will regret it. Would you be up for a big solo tour of the album? If you want to connect with an audience, a huge venue isn’t the place to do it. We consciously chose to do smaller joints to bring what we have to folks and let them be part of the experience. That is the point of this band, we play ‘for’ the audience not ‘to’ them. If things go well, we would love to do more gigs ‘for’ the folks who want to see us. If you could do anything on stage as part of one of your shows’ setup, what would you like to do? I’m doing it. Come down and check the band, they are amazing. What’s the one thing, or personal words of yours, that you’d like people to bear in mind as they hit play on your debut album this November? Enjoy the result of 20 years of friendship and musical collaborations that we, as friends and musicians, have created for you. From our hearts to yours. MARCH 2013 | MAYHEM!
