keeping diabetes at bay revealed: young Brits need a different approaCh to type 2 diaBetes treatment A recent study has revealed that the medicines used to treat diabetes in adults are not as effective in slowing the progression of Type 2 diabetes in young people. These findings raise alarms for young people because in recent years, Type 2 diabetes among the youth is a growing problem. The findings from the study suggest that there should be new approaches to treat adolescents with the Type 2 diabetes. Our health experts share their advice for the best approaches young people can take to help manage Type 2 diabetes, naturally.

Control your sugar intake Control your stress Sugar is the biggest culprit in our health in general and in particular our risks of most degenerative diseases including Type 2 diabetes. Firstly, avoid savory foods that contain sugar. Secondly, stop adding sugar to your hot drinks and other foods. Next, have a look at the sweet foods you’re consuming on a regular basis – those cereal bars that seem 'healthy’ may be loaded with sugar. Instead, try preparing your snacks, such as homemade granola bars with coconut sugar instead of refined sugar. Dried fruit can contain three times the sugar of fresh fruit, so choose fresh fruit and benefit from the antioxidants too.

eat dark green veggies Dark green veggies, such as spinach, kale, rocket and watercress are super-low in carbohydrates, calories and are high in fibre, meaning they have a very low glycaemic index and help to keep blood sugar levels stable. They’re rich in antioxidant nutrients, too, such as flavonoids and carotenoids – these may help to protect against some of the complications of diabetes, such as heart disease.

avoid paCkaged snaCks Pre-packaged snacks are low in nutrition and high in easily digested carbs that can spike your blood sugar. Eat raw carrots and a handful of nuts as a snack instead.

Millennials are living increasingly busy lifestyles that can, unfortunately, come with the side-effects of increased stress levels. Intense periods of stress can cause your glucose levels to increase, so controlling your stress is a top priority. You may not be able to control the stress but you can control how it affects you physically and also you can make sure you are not making it worse. There is a chance that your pattern of eating is subconsciously telling your body that it is under even more stress. If your blood sugar levels fluctuate (as they do even more so for women), your body will be releasing adrenaline which is the same hormone it releases when you are under stress. Try to keep your blood sugar levels and energy levels stable by eating something every three hours. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a snack mid-morning and one mid-afternoon, with no longer than three hours between.

exerCise is vital Staying active is vital. Exercise helps the body respond to insulin, keeps blood sugar levels down and helps manage your weight. You can get the greatest benefits by including both aerobic exercise such as cycling, dancing or jogging and strength training with weights or bodyweight exercises.

Getting a dog is a big commitment for a couple and should never be entered into lightly. Mayhem! is here with a few things to consider

make sure you’re ready

You need to have some serious conversations about whether you’re ready to look after a dog, not just now but in 10–15 years time. Dogs aren’t just a commitment in so far as walking them and picking up their mess, they’re a huge fi nancial commitment too and will dictate how you live you’re lives for the foreseeable future. No more swanning off to festivals or going on long weekends for example (unless you take the dog with you). You also need to consider how you’d handle going on holiday or deal with life changing decisions such as moving house, having kids, travelling, the list goes on.

Firstly have a discussion about what you both want from a dog. If one of you wants a big, boisterous dog to play with and the other wants one to carry around in a little bag you’re going to have problems from the outset. Once you have a criteria of what you both want, you can go and look at the breeds available to suit your needs. For example, if you suffer with allergies then a poodle or short-haired dog which doesn’t shed would be high on your priority list. Also try to be flexible and don’t set your sights on a particular breed just yet, you may think they’re cute, but they may be completely unsuited to your lifestyle.

Once you’ve decided on a couple of breeds for your shortlist, do even more research. Many dogs have genetic problems which could lead to huge vet bills as they get older. Alsatians, for example often suffer from arthritis in their hips and spaniels are particularly prone to gum disease. That’s not to say you shouldn’t go for those breeds, just go into it forearmed with as much information as possible. Visit your local dog shelter and ask any questions you may have. They’ll be happy to help and would rather that than end up with your dog when you decide you can’t look after it any more.

Teaching your dog to be obedient is a lifelong task. While most dogs will learn basic commands quickly, if you don’t enforce your ‘rules’ early on and become lapse in your training your dog will quickly realise and start misbehaving. Continue your training while on your walks too. Most dogs will perform in the comfort of your own home when you have a treat in your hand, but the real trick is for them to do it when they have distractions around them and you have empty hands!

get insuranCe Pet insurance can be expensive too, upwards of £30 a month in most cases. However it will save you a world of pain if anything happens to your dog. A broken leg could cost over £1000 to set if you pay in one go, so that monthly payment is well worth it to avoid those unexpected bills. It’s not just accidents to worry about, Schnauzers are particularly susceptible to diabetes, for example, and your insurance will contribute toward its care for the duration of the illness within policy limits. Don’t be tempted to put it off, if you get insurance once an issue has already been diagnosed the policy may not cover it or you could end up paying more.

Be soCiaBle Introduce your dog to as many experiences as possible when they’re young. Things like other people, children, other dogs, cats, people on bicycles, people with beards, loud noises, cars, roads etc etc etc! Your dog needs to understand that these are part of their world and nothing to be feared. Fear is usually the cause of wider issues like aggression so the more you do the better your dog will be. Take your dog to puppy socialisation classes where they can learn basic commands and play with other dogs in a controlled environment. This is great for their development. If you’re getting an adult dog, make sure you find out if they have any behavioural issues first and see an expert trainer to see if it can be corrected, it will pay dividends later.

There’s defi nitely some truth in this idiom; fatty foods will make you feel sluggish and sweets lead to an energy slump when the sugar leaves your system. It’s ok to indulge, but the more fruit, vegetables and pulses you eat, the more refreshed you’ll feel. If this still isn’t enough you can look for everyday aphrodisiacs such as chocolate, strawberries, almonds and garlic.

Take advantage of the post school holiday price dips and get away, just the two of you. Never underestimate the power of a crackling fi replace and a change of scenery to get in the mood. If you can’t stretch to a short break away, why not try something closer to home? A walk hand-inhand in the crisp frosty air is sure to blow the cobwebs away and it’s a good excuse to snuggle up all warm and cosy afterwards.

Stress can be a prime factor in loss of libido, so take some time to pamper yourself and each other. Share a bath or take time to give each other a massage. Take the pressure off by not expecting these to lead to sex (though if it does, who’s complaining?). Remember all those cutesy little things you used to do when you were first going out? Try some of them again! Even a little post-it note on the bathroom mirror can be enough to show your other half that you’re thinking of them.

At the same time, you should reduce your intake of saturated and processed fats because these can cancel out the beneficial effects of EFAs.

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Aim to eat breakfast 30 minutes after waking up in order to replenish your blood sugar levels. Th is should be the largest meal of your day and allows for the most carbohydrates.

The time between breakfast and lunch can seem like forever. These healthy snacks will keep you going and avoid the temptation of the vending machine. Go for potassium fi lled snacks, such as a banana or dried fruit.

You’ll be ready for lunch around four hours after breakfast. Choose something that fi lls you up for the rest of your working day, instead of falling into a food coma as soon as you’ve finished. Something fresh and lean that’s bursting with Iron.

del amItrI After a hiatus of over a decade Del Amitri have once again hit the road with their latest tour, we catch up with Justin Currie to find out what’s been going on. del amitri were on hiatus for over a decade, what brought you back to the stage? Well, after we reformed for a few weeks of gigs in 2014 we enjoyed the experience so much (after initially being very sceptical and trepidatious) that we always thought we’d do it again someday. An offer to do Edinburgh Castle came in, and having made such an arse of it in the nineties we thought it might be good to try and make amends. And four years felt like a decent enough period of time to stay out of people’s faces. So we’re now just doing a week of shows.

Will the band be playing any new material on this tour? We deliberately avoided that in 2014, we just wanted to do a comprehensive review of our output between 1985 and 2002. We called it “The A to Z of Us” and we felt new stuff would have fogged the glass. Besides which, we were so paranoid about trying to attain the same standards of our heyday that we feared the whole audience might sod off to the bogs as soon as we played something unfamiliar. Th is time we’ve given ourselves a little more leeway so we’ll try some new things and see if we can make them fi t.

is there any sign of a new del amitri album on the horizon? We snuck out a couple of tracks a few years ago in a far flung corner of the web. They’re still fluttering there, uneaten husks. We are discussing what might be justifiable. We have songs. We just don’t quite have a raison d’être. you say you “made an arse of” playing edinburgh Castle in the nineties. how so? We stormed the stage three seconds after being warned by some police chief that we’d be held criminally responsible if we didn’t tell standing folk to sit down and proceeded to play the opening riff of The Ones That You Love Lead You Nowhere for three minutes due to a catastrophic bit of bass guitar tuning which meant I couldn’t cue the song. This shredded our nerves. We were playing to 8,000 people – by far the biggest headline show we’d done at that point. We never regained equilibrium. And I was wearing a kilt. I’m almost tempted to do the exact same thing again just to blot out that particular nightmare with a new version. This time deliberate. a great many bands of the eighties and nineties have re-formed to milk the “heritage” circuit. how do you view your own place within the contemporary live scene? We’ll milk any teat proffered. We’re too old for this game so are grateful for any opportunity to make fools of ourselves – wouldn’t you be? As for the heritage tag, we were heritage before we were thirty. We gave up trying to be modern in 1986. We grew moustaches and sideburns in a sarcastic nod to the grim, unhip man-rock that clogged the seventies. If we had stuck to being chirpy, angst-riddled indie boys then this sort of thing might be harder to pull off. We always sold ourselves as a working band; plodders, drinkers and grouches. We just about still qualify as men, although it won’t be long before we turn into old ladies, as all men are destined to do. By that point we might actually be a decent group.

There is to be a del amitri book published this summer. is this a cynical commercial tie-in? It’s nowt to do with us. An Australian lunatic called Charles Rawlings-Way decided to write the whole sorry tale down a few years ago. It felt rude not to help him out with a few interviews and photos. He’s a lovely man and I enjoyed waffling on to him on Skype with a glass of red wine while he was having his breakfast in Adelaide. I’ve read a proof and it’s remarkably comprehensive. It’s a non-stop romp through twenty years of sex, drugs and quality biscuits. It’s a bit embarrassing, really – we don’t merit that sort of scrutiny – but I’m overjoyed that Mr. Rawlings-Way saw fit to attempt such an onerous task. I do come out of it looking like a bit of an arsehole which goes to show that not everything is fake news. you formed del amitri in your teens and are now touring in your fifties. how have things changed for you as a performer? The further you travel from your youth the less bloody vital every aspect of the project becomes. It goes from being a do-or-die obsession, heartbreaking and ecstatic in equal measure, to a warmly pleasurable bit of mild exertion. You can’t hit the frenzy of yore but you can nail things with a little more solidity and authority perhaps. The angst ebbs and the confidence flows. Not that you’re not still besides yourself with nerves every time you step into the light. But it’s a mission and it’s unfinished. There’s always something more to say.

The reborn Fiat 500 proved a smash hit when it arrived in 2007, so Fiat started to expand the range and the 500C cabrio arrived soon after. The fabric roof retracts while the roof pillars and side windows stay in place, providing a wind-in-the-hair driving experience without radically changing the 500’s iconic shape or compromising safety. The controls are light – this is a city car after all – and the Fiat is easy to drive and park. All 500s are cheap to run as the small engines sip fuel. BmW 2 series Following BMW’s new naming policy, the 2 Series Convertible takes the baton from the open-roofed BMW 1 Series. Now, the design is far better resolved, with a sleek appearance and well-judged proportions from every angle. In typical BMW fashion, there’s a plethora of engines, with four petrols and three diesels ranging from 134hp to 335hp. It’s possible to enjoy the breeze while returning up to 69mpg in 218d and 220d versions, while the high-powered M240i can get from 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds. Choose this engine and you’ll want to drop the roof just to hear the 3.0-litre straight-six sing as you go through the gears. From £28,260.

ds 3 CaBrio Best thought of as a premium supermini with a very large sunroof, the DS 3 Cabrio is based on the DS 3 hatchback. It’s a stylish proposition with a full-length, poweroperated fabric roof to open up its comfortable interior to the elements; it can be folded back halfway, or fully retracted in 16 seconds at speeds of up to 70mph. An economical range of 1.2-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines is available, with the most frugal diesel returning an average of 81mpg and the fastest petrol giving a 0-62mph time of nine seconds. merCedes C-Class Mercedes has vast experience in designing convertibles and even with the roof stowed, the interior is impressively refined and free from buffeting. With it up, the multi-layered fabric and clever design means there’s little difference between the Cabriolet and Coupe on the move in refinement terms. The 2.1-litre diesel is a bit chatty though, which makes Mercedes’ turbocharged petrol engines better suited to cruising with the roof down. The C200 and C300 produce 181hp and 242hp, and return around 42mpg. From teen it-girl to rural blogger, Blake Lively is stepping back from the spotlight, and with good reason. “I don’t want a quIeter lIfe, necessarIly, but I certaInly want one wIth less chaos and more stabIlIty” Blake Lively spent much of her time growing up in California, hanging out at the beach where surfing was one of her passions. Although she had the occasional mishap – “I once cracked my nose” – the tall, blonde actress loved the feeling of energy that riding on the waves provided, yet one of the movie world’s healthiest, foodiest, liveliest actresses is perhaps starting to mellow. That would certainly explain her decision to play the character Emily in new film A Simple Favor. This diversion is one altogether closer to a core thriller territory, where mysticism and murder replace the bubbly, ballsy resonances of so much of what she has taken to in the past. In the script, Emily, the friend of a small-town blogger (Anna Kendrick), goes missing, with the movie opening up into a story of betrayals and reversals, a dead body and the revolving question of who is duping whom.

“When you have a family and settle down the things that seemed important before just aren’t,” she says. “I don’t want a quieter life, necessarily, but I certainly want one with less chaos and more stability, and that has to be what every parent craves.” And of course, any remaining instability can be played out in the ‘pretend’ world of film, something Lively is expressing in her new project. It’s certainly all a long way from the quickfire chaos of teen drama Gossip Girl. “That’s true,” she nods. “With Gossip Girl there were times where we would be shooting two to three episodes at once, 27 episodes a year, 16- to 18-hour days every single day - it was just nuts, but great fun.” “It was nice living and working in New York City, and we didn’t even have the pressure of having to act well, because there wasn’t the time to! They would give us our lines at the very last second because they were still writing them it was so hard to keep up with that machine, but a great experience nevertheless.”

The challenges nowadays are very different, and so befits someone who takes quality over quantity where her acting endeavours are concerned. “Anything I’m taking on now must be really challenging – I’m done with the simple stuff. It must inspire me because my time at home with Ryan and the children is so special and beautiful.” “There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to disrupt that life at all, even though I still love my work so much. But I do want to keep working, and I want to be good enough to combine that with being a mum and having a happy family, because raising children has always been my biggest dream.” “Children are always full of surprises, whether it’s getting crapped on or getting this big smile that you can’t stop looking at. If these titles don’t inspire you to believe that there’s something out there for you to watch, learn from and enjoy, just dwell on the fact that Ken Robinson features (Ken Robinson is an international advisor on education in the arts to the government) alongside Mary Roach, who is the American author behind ‘Bonk’ (a book studying the scientific intricacies behind sex, even delving into Kinsey’s attic-based sex experiments that lead to the famed Kinsey Scale) on a long list of hosts and that it’s not all astrophysicists or MENSA genius’s. TED Teen talks are almost just as popular as the adult hosted talks and with subjects like curing Pancreatic Cancer, rescuing brides from Child Marriage, inventing Nuclear Fusion Reactors and highlighting the Musical Maestro’s of tomorrow. All of TED’s Teen

hosts are younger than twenty and are inspirational wunderkind. Martin Robbins of New Statesman panics that TED Talks are overreaching, and filling their subscribers with a false sense of intellectual know-how and ego. He even goes as far as to compare TED Talks to something he’s coined as GOD Talks. TED Talks have ‘ideas worth spreading’ and most relevantly, TED Talks inspire conversations among lots of people; creating conversations, opinions (whether allying with the original TED Talk or contradicting entirely) and more ideas. Isn’t that something to celebrate? If you are eager to learn, top-up the old brain box, and discover things you never knew existed - it must be worth a try, right? Switch out your regular binge for a TED Talk, and your brain will thank you for it!
