Mix and match, get creative. No one will judge you for wearing something more than once.

There’s nothing more frustrating than lugging things with you only to fi nd them waiting at the other end. Many budget hotels offer communal equipment which is kept at the front desk.

get active You don’t need to spend hours in the gym or pounding the streets to have a healthy lifestyle. Your body is made to move in lots of different ways - get active three or four times a week, for something like an hour at a time. Keep it fun and social - participate in exercise classes or take up a sport. Local clubs or centres have plenty to offer and they will be delighted to welcome people of any ability or skill level. Check out your local community centres, you might be surprised to see what’s going on just around the corner. Whatever you do, if your heart’s pumping and you look good and sweaty by the end, you’ve got it just about right.
eat Well Healthy diets are neither expensive nor diffi cult. You may hear about different dieting methods in the media or from friends, but don’t over complicate things. Cook meals from scratch. Eat plenty of vegetables. Consume a well balanced diet containing a variety of food types. It’s not hard to grill a piece of meat, steam some veggies or boil some potatoes.

How would you assess the man, Lewis Hamilton? An enigma? No, but getting there. Someone who splits opinion? Yes, without question. The best driver of a generation? Undoubtedly. No matter what else he does in his career, Hamilton has dreamed, worked and succeeded, and for that, we should all be proud.
“I’D GIVe It All Up IN orDer to stAy At tHe top of My GAMe” As a F1 driver draped in the luxurious trappings of everything the playboy millionaire lifestyle offers – the yachts, the Monaco pad, more diamonds than a Hatton Garden trader and the odd fast car hidden under a dust sheet – you’d forgive Lewis Hamilton for sitting back, pouring a G&T and counting his pile of cash. But despite outward impressions – see any paparazzi photo of the suave 32-year-old taken in the last decade – Hamilton cares less than we think about the showbiz side of the sport. Yes, he likes to mix ruthless acceleration with an eye on style, but this is a man more driven by success than ever before. “I’d give it all up in order to stay at the top of my game,” he offers. “Racing and winning is the world to me and the other stuff will always be secondary.”

Hamilton has spoken at length in the past about trying to find a balance, and he admits that even just by stepping out into a world away from the track, he is different to most drivers. “The lifestyle that I live is definitely different to the others. But who says it has to be the way they are doing things? My style works perfectly for me.” The fact is, Hamilton’s career is one long success story after another, and donning an YSL suit for a fashion show doesn’t appear to have done him any harm in his pursuit of being the greatest driver ever. As well as standing the only man in F1 history to have won at least one race every season since making his top-level debut in 2007, he was the first British driver to win consecutive titles, picking up a BBC Sports Personality of the Year gong along the way. In recent weeks, he further cemented his reputation as the nation’s greatest motorsport maestro – on home soil, no less – with a record equalling fifth win at Silverstone.

That recent victory also put the Stevenageborn speedster right back in the running for the F1 Driver’s Championship, with the Ferrari vs Mercedes feud set to take a few more twists and turns before the season’s conclusion at Abu Dhabi in November. While the Silverstone win sets the pint-sized powerhouse up for a potential fourth Driver’s Championship, it’s no secret that the flash and occasionally petulant driver can be somewhat of a handful at times. “It’s just not in my nature not to want to fight and battle on every straight, every corner,” he admits. “I don’t really think you can be in this sport without there being a fiery, ruthless streak. You’d just be rubbish on the track,” he laughs. During his career Hamilton has never strayed too far from controversy, be it his wellpublicised spats with former teammate Nico Rosberg, or his recent on-track fracas with Vettel in Azerbaijan. In spite of these occasional colourful moments, Hamilton is undoubtedly the most talented British racing driver of his generation – and is in no mood to entertain the notion that his lavish lifestyle off the track impacts his work on it.

The only way to have a shave in the mornings is the honourable and very masculine method of wet shaving, i.e. using hot water, a flannel, shaving gel and a proper razor. Th e main essentials to a perfect shave are water and warmth. Soak a folded fl annel or small towel in hot water and wrap it around the face for 15 seconds. Th is warms and softens the skin in readiness for shaving. Th ose who desire a smooth shave might wish to apply a pre-shave lotion to protect the skin as well as helping the razor to glide smoothly across the face.
Make sure you use a sharp blade which you warm under hot running water. Shave with the grain of your beard and, in awkward areas such as the chin and under the nose, move the blade sideways across the growth. Try not to shave against the grain as this pulls the skin in the wrong direction causing small cuts and ‘grazing’ to the skin and is the most common cause of ‘razor burn’, ingrown hairs and shaving rash.
steP 2 Apply shaving cream/gel using a shaving brush. A good one will lift and moisten the beard, preparing it for the shave. Always use a quality razor with the sharpest blades available. Cheap disposable razors have low-grade steel blades that bend when shaving. You may have a hankering for the ‘real deal’ of a cut throat razor but best to avoid these unless you’re a professional, an expert wet shaver, or Sweeney Todd.
steP 4 After shaving rinse thoroughly with cool water to close the pores and pat dry with a soft towel. A good wet shave exfoliates and cleanses the face, leaving smooth new skin and a healthy, clean appearance. Newly exfoliated skin needs to be protected from the elements, so for healthy skin it’s important to use a good quality after-shaving moisturizer or balm – try out a few to see which ones suit your skin the best.

In one particular episode, she helps the Mayor sharpen his pencil after he snaps it due to being all hot and bothered under the collar. But, above all: it’s good for us, an ancient and most pure of healing elixirs. What is it? Water! So valuable and perhaps the most important natural resource on the planet – which is nearly 75% water anyway – yet one we all take for granted. Health experts unanimously concur that we all need to be drinking at least 2.5 litres of water a day (that’s a little over 4 pints) just to keep ourselves hydrated. The human body is 75% water (the same as the earth – coincidence?) and, if we drop that margin by just 2% we become dehydrated. How many of these symptoms are familiar to you? Tiredness, Headaches, Aching Joints, Urinary Infections, Slow Metabolism, Low Immunity, Stress, Weight Gain, Indigestion, Dark/Smelly Urine. All can be a sign of dehydration – which, if taken to extreme levels, can be very serious from a health point of view. That 2.5 litres a day therefore, is quite important and should, however possible, become part of your day to day living.

can i take it all at once? No, this can be extremely dangerous in some cases and will make you feel, at the very least, bloated and uncomfortable. Th e best thing to do is to sip your way through the recommended amount slowly and steadily throughout the day.
What else Do i neeD to knoW? Feeling thirsty is the first symptom of mild dehydration – obviously! However, feeling tired may also be a sign that you are not drinking enough. Just a 2% drop in your daily recommended hydration can slow down recall, reactions and cause difficulty in focusing on tasks. But cracking open another can of Red Bull might just be the worst thing you can do as far as your body is concerned – sip away steadily throughout the day to avoid the chance of this happening. Why? We don’t have willies so wanking isn’t a constant temptation when we’re left alone - sorry boys but apparently it’s a (big?) distraction for most of you!

For the past decade Dan has been working in the publishing industry as a graphic designer, photographer and publisher. Although immersed in the creative industry he was always looking for a more expressive creative release. Back in the spring of 2016 Dan began working on a series of stunning works from his studio in Portsmouth. His acrylic paintings - created
with household brushes and palette knives evoke a sense energy and drama while bursting to life with colour in fast broad strokes. Dan’s work recently gained the attention of London exhibition curators and his work was displayed in one of the cities cultural centres. Closer to home, you can currently see a selection on display at 1000 Lakeside North Harbour.

We at Fareham and Waterlooville branch of Cats Protection aim to help as many needy cats and kittens within our area as we possibly can. We take in cats from various situations; some are strays, some cannot remain with their families due to house moves, new babies or additional pets. When taking in a new cat or kitten our first port of call is one of our local vets for a thorough check-up and, if no vaccination records are available, a new course must be commenced. If unneutered, we arrange that as well as microchipping. Therefore, our adopters have peace of mind as well as one monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free Pet Plan insurance which we recommend they continue. Our adoption fees make this a very economical package. We also trap, neuter and return feral cats to stables and farms which allows the colony to continue without the worry of ever-increasing numbers. What have the romans ever drunk for us? Quite a bit is the obvious answer! But perhaps the greatest legacy of their mighty empire lies not in sanitation or public health but in the beginnings of pub culture on these shores. Though ale has been quaffed since the Bronze Age, it was the tabernae lining the famed Roman roads that served as the ancestor of the modern day drinking establishment.

They were part of the early phase of retail culture, selling food and wine among other items and indeed services - historian Titus Livius wrote of them that they proved essential in gauging the mood of the people in the eyes of the general Marcus Furius Camilus, a driving force in the expansion of what was then a republic.

A little later on came the Anglo-Saxons, who applied similar principles to the taberna in founding their own alehouses, which grew from people’s actual houses and were often manned by an alewife. She proved the forerunner of the modern day barmaid in a sense, as well as serving as landlord - women dominating the trade to the extent that records from shortly before the Black Death indicate, it was solely the preserve of the fairer sex. The popularity of the brew itself may have something to do with the frankly terrible quality drinking water available to drinkers of the period, not that a higher standard in the modern age has stopped us swapping the cold tap for a cold pint over many an English summer?
Pub Rock No, not that sinking feeling as you walk home after one too many. Pubs have long been a hotbed of song- the fi rst record of what’s known as a drinking song, which should require little explanation, hails from the eleventh century. The likes of 99 Bottles Of Beer and Whiskey In The Jar (as popularised by Th in Lizzy) have their roots in a folk tradition which grew up around the places beer and indeed whiskey are still downed today, things coming full circle in the early Seventies both here and in Australia as the likes of Dr Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe and Ian Dury’s fi rst group Kilburn and the High Roads followed in the footsteps of Americans Eggs Over Easy, who became the house band at the Tally Ho in Kentish Town (London). In the merry old land of Oz, extensions to opening hours and the repeal of the Sunday Observance Act allowed the likes of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Blackfeather and Buffalo to do much the same for our Aussie cousins. Cheers!
so What haPPeneD? Worth pondering over your own choice of alcoholic beverage. As traditional pubs up and down the country close their doors and the survivors embrace restaurant-standard food alongside the amber nectar, what caused their slow decline? It’s estimated that the slump began in around 1982, with various theories put forward. 2007 saw the smoking ban
introduced - which may have alienated those who liked a cigarette as much as a pint. With alcohol itself available in many supermarkets and cheaper than nipping to the local for many in the current economic climate, another nail is hammered into the coffi n of the pub. Sad, is it not, that the only communities where it is still a focal point seem to be Walford and Weatherfield? The Queen Vic & Rovers Return are, it seems, immune from such concerns. Incidentally the oldest real world boozer still standing is thought to be Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, though several others have claims. The controversy around the Cocks - stop sniggering in the snug seems to revolve around exactly when it dates from. First licensed in 1756, with Historic England describing it as having the appearance of a Sixteenth Century building, its name comes from a certain popular sport of the period as opposed to odd goings on in the gents. Bouts between fighting fowl are said to have taken place there since 1800, with PETA so appalled by that legacy that they wrote to both the landlord and owner Mitchells & Butlers to request a name change. Which was then swiftly declined! Other olde world pubs to have come forward with their own attempts to wobble unsteadily towards a place in the record books include Bolton’s Ye Olde Man & Scythe and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, for those wishing to make a pilgrimage to Nottingham to pay homage. The ‘’ye olde’’ prefi x in itself dates from the Victorian era, while pub signs were made a legal requirement by King Richard in 1393 with the rather fearsome proclamation that “Whosoever shall brew ale in the town with intention of selling it must hang out a sign, otherwise he shall forfeit his ale.”. Th is was for the benefi t of ale inspectors, who would take a look around premises as well as sampling the brew from within. One of these lucky chaps was John Shakespeare, whom arguably one of the country’s greatest playwrights called “Dad”. From Milk and Alcohol to the milk of human kindness - “Yet doe I feare thy Nature, It is too full o’ th’ Milke of humane kindnesse.” Time, gentlemen, please!
