snAke oil And other myths
Body BendinG Roll up, roll up!
Come with the Ringmaster of Mayhem! into the big top as we take a look at probably one of the oldest, most baffling and physically challenging of the circus arts. The name of the game is of course contortion, sometimes called contortionism – so, twist and quite possibly shout as you get yourself into one of any number of positions!
the crAdle of contortion Go as far afield as Mongolia and you’ll fi nd the art of contortion commands great esteem in the country’s cultural estimation. Pushing the body to its physical limits has been a popular form of entertainment for the people of Ulan Bator and beyond since time immemorial, and training has been known to start from as young as five years old! 10 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
This may seem mad, but there’s solid medical reasoning: a higher risk of damaging still-developing bones in younger children should they attempt it. Depending which direction your spine has a greater degree of flexibility, contortionists are classed as either “front” or “back-benders”, with relatively few believed to be all-rounders and able to go both ways, to coin a phrase.
Typically if you’re a front-bender your act would include the human knot (sticking one or both of your legs behind your neck while keeping your knees bent), while back-benders could try the hand seat (making your head touch your feet or bottom from a standing or lying position). Or if you’re really daring try enterology! As the name implies, it’s the art of squeezing yourself into a space most people would think a human body can’t fit. Don’t say we didn’t warn you if all goes wrong though.
Aptly for such a mysterious art form, several myths invented either by performers/promoters or accepted as physiological fact without much basis in truth still exist. QI-style buzzers at the ready, chaps and chapesses! First, if you’re double-jointed it won’t necessarily mean you have more potential for success as a body-bender. The term “double-jointed” actually means you have more mobility in certain joints, not some freakish pair where there should only be one, a surprisingly common misconception. And it’s not completely necessary to dislocate them to perform more complex feats – actually more danger can arise from performing with a dislocation as the affected limb can’t be lifted or indeed support weight. You don’t need snake oil or any other special brews, either! This was a fabrication, developed in 19th Century America, where travelling medicine shows would use contortionists to supposedly prove beyond doubt that their various wares could cure arthritis and similar conditions – an early example of false advertising. If you really wanted to stretch the point you could perform to the music of James Chance and The Contortions – New York’s fi nest and probably only contribution to the punk-jazz fusion scene. They’re probably best known for their début album Buy (1979), a follow-up to their appearance on the previous year’s Brian Eno-produced No New York compilation, an audio document of the city’s post-punk awakening. Either way, we just might see you in A&E soon enough – bend, but never break!

Be sAfe in the sun
sun awareness week from 5th–11th May organised by the British association of Dermatologists (BaD) aims to highlight the importance of staying safe in the sun – visit bad.org.uk for more info. The days of basting yourself in oil for all day sunbathing sessions are long gone and aren’t worth the long term consequences of wrinkles, age spots and increased risk of skin cancer. The good news is fake tans have never been better – they look more natural and don’t smell as pungent as they once did. A bit of prep is essential. Tan catches on any dry areas so it is vital to exfoliate and moisturise well a few days running in the lead up. Knees, elbows and ankles are the usual trouble spots. Rub a bit of moisturiser into those areas before applying the tan as well. A dab of Vaseline on areas like eyebrows is a good idea and you may want to go easy on the eye socket area generally – fake tan in this area can sometimes just look as though you’ve had a heavy night! A spray tan professionally applied is worth the money if you’re going somewhere special and don’t want to risk any DIY disasters. Get advice from the salon about what to do before and after your tanning session. Take loose clothes and don’t apply deodorant beforehand for one. Take it from a bride who forgot this and had to keep her arms glued to her side on the big day to avoid showing off the resulting streaky armpit effect!

off on your holidays but not sure what to pack? sitting on your suitcase and still unable to zip it up? Follow this guide to help you travel light while ensuring you have all the essentials!
holidAy checklist
WhAt not to WeAr
BAre minimum Check your passport. Sounds obvious, but a lot of us can’t remember where we “put it safely”; and check the expiration date! Make sure you know ahead of any vaccinations or visas you need and book that all-important travel insurance. Remember all the essentials including currency, accommodation details, plug adaptors, prescribed medication, driving licence and EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). 14 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
If you’re off somewhere hot, it’s easier to plan your day-to-day outfits. Pick out your clothes from your wardrobe and lay them out in days. If you’re staying somewhere with washing facilities, you can almost halve your clothes instantly. Find out if your accommodation supplies towels too, as this can cut down on vital packing space. Travelling somewhere cold or wet can be more tricky: you need to be prepared for all types of conditions, so wear some bulkier clothing travelling to free up space in your suitcase and pack extras of socks and gloves so you have dry spares. Top tip: if you tightly roll clothing, you can fit more in and with fewer creases at the other end!
don’t forGet! Remember your camera. Holidays are often once-in -a-lifetime experiences and you’ll want to capture every moment to treasure forever. Consider a small fi rst aid kit to pack including insect repellent, after-sun, blister plasters and don’t forget your glasses or contact lenses! Keep jewellery to a minimum in case of loss or theft and if you’re taking your mobile, you might want to pack that charger!
not All is lost Unless your vacation is somewhere like the Outer Hebrides or the middle of the jungle, remember that most places are used to civilisation and most things you forget can be picked up in your destination’s shops, or if you notice before, even at the airport. Write a list and tick it as you pop it in the suitcase.

Witches We Can’t helP But loVe
rAvennA SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN
With the Disney remakes coming thick and fast we’re all swooning over the new Disney princesses, but more so the villains seem to be taking the limelight. the villains are the stars of the show and we love them just as much if not more! We take a sneaky peak at a few firm favourites.
clementiAnnA MIRROR MIRROR Another (yet altogether different) take on the original Snow White, Mirror Mirror has Julia Roberts playing the villain role of Clementianna. America’s sweetheart, Julia Roberts, makes it very hard not to take a liking to what is meant to be a horrible, evil, wicked villain. Yet the comedy value of her wickedness makes us forget that she’s doing everything in her power to ruin poor Snow White’s life and takes us straight to the route of loving her. Swooning over a villain? In this case we don’t blame you at all.
Although this evil powerful sorceress enchanted Snow White’s father and then killed him, took over the kingdom, locked Snow White in a tower and drained the kingdom of all youth so she could maintain her own beauty, is she really all that bad? We love ravenna, played by Charlize theron, her power and diva-like approach to the running of a kingdom is overlooked as being brilliant. Let’s face it, which one of us wouldn’t jump at the chance to find a way to contain our own inner beauty? We love ravenna in this new adaption of the Disney classic Snow White.
mAleficent MALEFICENT In the recent adaptation of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty we see Angelina Jolie sporting prosthetic face implants and an eerie disposition as the evil sorceress Maleficent. Jolie manages to still look fabulous, dressed to scare in an all-black ensemble with blood red lips and a high horned headdress. The mistress of all evil we just can’t help but take a liking to due to her undeniable greatness and the ability to allure us all. Even if she cursed us to prick our finger on a spindle of a spinning wheel we’d still love her. 16 MAyheM! | may/june 2014

Originally this was released in a serialised format in the San Francisco Chronicle. It follows the story of Mary Ann Singleton who, impulsively decides to stay in San Francisco after visiting for a holiday. She meets an eclectic bunch of people, located mostly in her own apartment building. This was the novel that was rumoured to have outed Rock Hudson, although only referring to the character as “______ ______”.
Now, we’ve all wondered what goes on behind the doors of a doctors surgery I’m sure. In this book, Ben Daniels gives us a wonderful insight in to the many interesting characters that he has treated in his time as a GP.
If you like Martina Cole then you will like this. Something shocking happens to a group of 15 year old girls in a children’s home that causes them to run away. Ten years later, having all tried to forget the secrets of their past, they’re forced to meetup again in order to sort out their previous employer, The Geezer once and for all!
Yet another Quick Read, this time from the always excellent Andy McNab. This time however we see a fascinating insight into McNab’s personal history. Abandoned as a baby, he navigates his way through poverty and various other hardships until he is recruited into the army from a juvenile detention centre. It is this point where everything does change.
the Boy with the toPknot SATHNAM SANGHERA Sathnam Sanghera grew up in the Wolverhampton in the 1980’s, he had a fairly conventional childhood fi lled with George Michael mix tapes, 30p an hour jobs and the occasional bounty bar. When he’s 24 however he learns something quite shocking about his family history that will affect everything he knew. A heart warming memoir from a young man trying to fi nd out the truth of his past.

theodore Bone JOHN GRISHAM
The fi rst of Muchamore’s novels to feature CHERUB. James Choke is recruited by an agent of CHERUB after he is moved to a children’s home on the death of his mother. Any kid, even the kid in all of us will be entertained by these spy novels!
To get rid of Matthew there are many plans! Stop brushing your teeth, stop shaving your legs, keep criticising his dress sense, then maybe buy incontinence pads and leave them lying around. If this doesn’t work, more drastic measures may be required but how far would you go? Fallon is always entertainingly but this comedy will leave you laughing out loud from beginning to end.
We follow the eponymous Boone, a young lawyer who attempts to help his friend whose house is set to be bull dozed. However he soon fi nds himself mired in the corruption of those behind the plan. Grisham never fails to deliver an excellent legal thriller and this is no exception.

Professor Martin hates everyone on the planet. It wasn’t always this way, he was once a respected Professor but following on from solving a mathematical problem he disappears, only to be found days later wandering down a road completely naked. It’s a thought provoking novel that looks at what it actually means to be human.
This book is small but it packs a punch. Written as part of the Quick Reads series it concentrates on the story of 14 year old lad and is a telling story about inner city knife crime. A must read from this year’s selection of books that will leave you thinking for ages.
Imagine secretly hating the person you have spent the last 20 years, what do you do? Do you plan their murder? What about if, unbeknownst to you, they hate you too and are coincidentally planning your demise? This is the tale of Victor and Jane Smiley. It’s chilling, fast paced and an excellent thriller. It won’t give you any tips though!

Coop and Lil grew up together and their friendship graduated from innocent childhood games to stolen kisses and a chance of a romantic future. Then something happens to tear them apart, something that, 12 years and a reunion later, is set to tear them apart again.
Another of the Quick Reads to feature on our list, but this time Archer has given us four short stories. To review them would be to give too much away but rest assured you won’t be disappointed. Amusing but chilling they are slightly differently themed but no less excellent
riVers of london BEN AARONOVITCH This is the fi rst in Aaronovitch’s series featuring Peter Grant as the detective hired to work in the Met, as part of their magical and supernatural department. He ends up investigating two seemingly unrelated cases, one about possession and the other about warring Gods in the River Thames. It’s a tremendously entertaining introduction to the series.

London girl, Eloise Hamilton, forced to move to Dartmouth in order for her husband to live his dream. What she finds when she gets there is a world that she fights desperately to keep from imploding. the Perfect MUrder PETER JAMES
Vengence is Mine inc ROALD DAHL This is a collection of Dahl’s short stories for adults. They’re just brilliant, can’t say anymore than that. Just read them!
After the fUnerAl AGATHA CHRISTIE Featuring the excellent Hercule Poirot as well as a whole host of unusual characters that Christie wrote so well. Victorian houses, a grisly murder and a will. Can Poirot solve the mystery of the hatchett murder? You’ll have to read it to fi nd out.
the Boy in the striPed PyJAMAs JOHN BOYNE Gut wrenching material that never gets easier to read about, nor should it. The boy in the title is a young concentration camp inmate who is befriended by the son of camp commandant. Telling this story through the eyes of children brings a naivety and innocence to the subject matter that doesn’t diminish the powerful message.
gorky PArk MARTIN CRUZ SMITH A triple murder occurs at the Moscow amusement park of the title, in Soviet Russia. Behind the scenes of the investigation lies a hotbed of international corruption and secrets that Senior Investgator Renko must plunge into at great personal risk. A tense thriller from Smith.

Multi-award-winning television producer and esteemed author, Jane Fallon, drops in for chat following her recent selection as part of the hugely celebrated World Book night. We peel back the cover and read into her career to date to find out how it all happened. How does it feel to be part of World Book Night? Amazing. It’s an honour to be selected. It’s become such a phenomenon and the fact that they only pick 20 books a year means it’s a real privilege. How did you get involved in World Book Night and what does it mean to you? It’s a fantastic initiative. I love the grass roots nature of it – the fact that the givers get to decide themselves who to give the books to. Anything that encourages and enables people to read has to be a good thing. I can’t imagine growing up without having access to books, they were such a huge part of my childhood.

MAYHEM! Meets… Where did the idea behind your book ‘Getting Rid of Matthew’ come from? I was working in TV at the time and trying to come up with an idea for my next show. My real ambition had always been to write novels and when the idea for Getting Rid of Matthew came to me – almost fully formed over the course of one sleepless night. Something that sadly has never happened to me since – I knew it was now or never. What are your thoughts on the other titles selected? Have you read them? I’ve read quite a few. It’s a really eclectic list, which is exactly how it should be. There’s something on there to appeal to everybody. Have you experienced writers block and what are your tips for beating it? I’ve been lucky enough never to have a sustained period when I felt as if I had writers block (yet!), but I do have days when I simply can’t think. Or at least, that I know I’m not coming up with anything good. My solution is to write anyway even if what you write is terrible. You can go back and re write it later and it’ll keep you moving forward. Apparently there is a novel in each of us. Do you believe this? Do you have any advice for our readers on how to start to writing their first novel? I think everyone has a different story to tell. Everyone’s perspective on the world is unique to them. That doesn’t necessarily mean everyone can write a novel though. A good novel is so much more than just telling a story from A to B. Where do you write? Do you have a special place that inspires you and gets your creative juices flowing? I have a little office at home but I often end up sprawled on the sofa in the living room. I fi nd it hard to write away from the house. There are too many distractions and I like silence. What are you reading at the moment? Spare Brides by my friend Adele Parks
Do you ever judge a book by its cover? All the time. I get put off a book very easily if the cover is unappealing – which is ridiculous really but I fi nd I can’t help myself. Many authors barely get a say in what is on the cover of their books so it feels unfair to dismiss them so out of hand. Which author inspires you the most and why? Fay Weldon has been the biggest influence on my writing. I discovered her when I was about 15 and I was blown away by how conversational and colloquial her style was. I’d never read anything like it. It made me realise I could be much freer in the way I wrote. What has been your biggest career challenge, and how did you conquer it? For me probably making the move from TV to writing novels. I was lucky that I was freelance and in a position to take a year out, but telling everyone that I was off to write a novel felt incredibly exposing. It certainly focused my mind and made me even more determined to succeed though. If you could choose five novels for your own WBN list, what would they be? In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, Bright Shiny Morning by James Frey, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte and Harper lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. If you could pass only one mustread book on to the next generation, what would it be and why? That’s an impossible question to answer! A big compendium with hundreds of books in, or is that cheating? As a bestselling author and multiaward-winning producer, is there anything else you’d like to achieve? I want to learn to play the piano.
Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk
Can you tell us a bit your time spent as a TV Producer? I started in the script department and then I got my first producing break on EastEnders. That sounds grander than it was – I was one of several working under a Series Producer. It was a fantastic training ground though. The shows that I’m probably best known for are This Life and Teachers. Has there ever been a pivotal moment that has made you appreciate what you have achieved so far? I never take what I do for granted. I’m incredibly lucky to be making a career out of something that has been my ambition since I was five. What’s a day in the life of Jane Fallon like? Different to all the others. I always try to write something though. The more often you write the better you’ll become. How do you feel your writing has developed since your first novel? Your writing style is always evolving and, of course, changes a little with each book, but I always tend to write in a fairly easy way – I like to approach my writing as if I’m telling a friend a story. Are there any books you would like to turn into a TV production? All of mine obviously. I have no desire to go back to work in TV though so I wouldn’t want to produce them myself. What is your best writing tip? Keep moving forward. It’s all too easy to get stuck in a loop going over and over the same passage trying to make it perfect. Try to write a complete fi rst draft and then you can begin to work on making it better. What’s next for you? I’m already writing my next book. It’s about a woman who persuades her assistant to act as a honey trap when she suspects her best friend’s husband is a serial cheater… Skeletons by Jane Fallon is available now, by Penguin books priced at £7.99.

toP Picnic sPots
Written by chris Morley
Now then, the first step in any successful foodie gathering around the basket is choosing that perfect spot. And our fair county is blessed to find itself in possession of several, so get poring over Hampshire Food and Drink’s scrummy top ten at visit-hampshire.co.uk/food-anddrink/top-10s/top-10-picnic-spots.
Summer
scoff With the long overdue news that the sun has got his hat on and he is indeed coming out to play, what better way to bask in his warm glow than to pack a basket of goodies, round up some chums and find an idyllic spot in which to picnic? Practice your happiest skip and whistle a jaunty tune as Mother Mayhem! prepares the sandwiches, cakes and lashings of ginger beer – and if you can find a dog (preferably named Timmy, but we’re flexible), so much the better!
A Picnic in PersiA You probably won’t find a better description of the simple pleasure of a picnic than that offered by Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer Omar Khyyam in his 12th Century Rubaiyat. He was clearly a happy chappy when he wrote: “A Book of Verses underneath the Bough, A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread – and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness – Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!” 24 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
Lucky girl, is all we can say. But it shouldn’t be too hard for you to experience a similar sunny euphoria if you get the fine art of picnicking right straight off the bat. Which is where we come in. Join us under the shady tree and we’ll tell you more – last one there’s a rotten egg! And trust us, you don’t want one of those in your lovingly packed hamper. Rather spoils the vibe, wouldn’t you say?
If you want to venture out into some fine examples of England’s green and pleasant land, to borrow Jerusalem’s fine phrase, there are more than a few on the doorstep! Why not head off into the New Forest, Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Gosport’s Walpole Park for a taste of the great outdoors? Surely one of the greatest privileges of being an Englishman or woman is our nation’s fine countryside, so do your duty to Queen and country by enjoying it. Or if you do like to be beside the seaside you could hum a shanty, pack a basket and head for Southsea seafront! Alternatively you could try Lee-on-Solent or Stokes Bay. What could be better than being serenaded by the sound of the sea as you nibble your sandwiches and gaze off dreamily into the middle distance with waves lapping and maybe even time for a quick skimming session with a few well-aimed stones once you’ve finished your leisurely luncheon? Never fear, though, if you can’t or don’t want to venture slightly further afield! Portsmouth itself has several great places to settle down to an afternoon of scoffing. Of course there’s the tried and tested old faithful that is Victoria Park, and if you fancy a spot of music with your munching there’s the promise of Southsea’s great bandstand, a bastion of outdoor tunefulness. So much choice, eh? And so little time to pack the food if you’ve taken a free-jazz, improvisational approach to planning it all. But, hey, that’s what summers are for. So get cracking!

Caffeine free
GinsenG
kicks
Ginseng is derived wholly from the ginseng root. It has been used for centuries in China for its mind boosting and stimulant effects. Can you really argue with hundreds of years of field research? Not to mention that ginseng doubles as an aphrodisiac! (As with all supplements, you should consult your doctor before taking ginseng.)
In small doses, caffeine does have some health benefits, but too much of the stuff can cause insomnia, anxiety, dehydration and can even artificially increase your heart rate! But don’t fear, here are five healthier alternatives to caffeine that can give you a much needed energy boost without the harmful side-effects:
So that’s five fabulous tips for replacing the caffeine in your diet with much healthier alternatives. Of course if you really want to replace caffeine altogether, why not put all five solutions into practice and soak in all of those tasty extra health benefits ready for this summer.
We’ve all fallen prey to the (usually blissful) afternoon nap, but there are times when getting some shut-eye is just not possible. Most of us are quick to reach for the coffee, but we’re often quicker to forget that caffeine is actually a drug.
An APPle A dAy We’ve all heard the saying “an apple a day”, but did you know that eating an apple can actually give you a boost of energy? The fructose in an apple breaks down much slower in your body than the refined sugar you find in sweets and fizzy drinks. This means you get the instant energy without feeling guilty about your sugar intake.
stretch… sounds simPle? That’s because it is. Spending around ten minutes stretching out every part of your body induces an endorphin release in the same way that exercise does. This means that your body not only wakes you up, but also puts you in a good mood to carry on with the day ahead. Neat.
Get A Good niGht’s sleeP This may seem obvious, but one of the many negative effects of not sleeping enough is that you may find your eyelids getting heavy throughout the day. Most studies recommend an average of 7–9 hours sleep, so if you want to stay awake and full of energy make sure you put your head down that little bit earlier at night.
drink A GlAss of cold WAter When you wake up in the morning you’ll have spent several hours deprived of fluids. A glass of water before or with breakfast replaces those lost fluids and kick-starts your metabolism. That means it can wake you up and help you shed a few extra pounds! 26 MAyheM! | may/june 2014

In appearance the contraption resembled a modern bicycle, but without pedals which meant that riders in effect had to walk or run while sat on it! Amazingly it wasn’t until a good few years later in 1860s France that pedals and rotary cranks were added to the Baron’s initial design to create something more like the bikes of today, which were given the name velocipede (derived from the Latin for “fast foot”).

snAke Wine
ever think the food in your fridge has become extremely repetitive? as we’ll explore in this article, some of the most extravagant and weirdly wonderful foods come from some of the most exotic countries in the world.
feelinG Peckish? Witchetty GruB
rocky mountAin oysters America is known for its vast range of foods – from popcorn to Coca-Cola to Big Macs. It may come as a surprise to you that one of the most popular and cultural foods in the USA is actually deep fried bull testicles. This somewhat exotic dish is believed to be a favourite of the American west cowboys and happens to be a common food available at music festivals, remaining extremely popular today. 30 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
Not just a gruesome challenge on I’m A Celebrity Celebrity..., this delicacy is enjoyed immensely by aboriginals in Australia. The actual defi nition of a witchetty grub is the large, white, wood-eating larvae of several moths. Sounds disgusting, right? Probably not something that anyone else in the world would confess to enjoying. Aboriginals have been snacking on them for centuries and they’re highly sought after as a high protein food. They’re edible either raw or cooked, the latter having a crispy texture resembling roast chicken on the outside, and a softer texture similar to the light yellow yolk of a fried egg inside.
Before you complain about the weak, lukewarm house wine at your local pub, just be glad you’re not in South East Asia drinking snake wine. Snake wine is exactly what it says on the bottle, funnily enough: it consists of a bottle of wine with a snake concealed inside it. If you think that’s disgusting, some wine producers choose not to put the whole snake in, opting for bodily fluids like blood instead. This yummy beverage is most popular in China and Vietnam. These South East Asian countries strongly believe that the wine has restorative properties and some believe it even has healing powers. The most venomous of snakes are used, as although the venom is no longer poisonous due to the ethanol in the alcohol, it’s known to be a curative liquid and is used for medicinal purposes.
fried sPiders This delicacy originates from Cambodia and is something of an acquired taste, consisting of a tarantula deep fried in oil. It became a phenomenon in the 1990s and remains highly popular in the city of Skuon in Cambodia. The legs of the spider are supposed to be crispy in texture, whereas the body of the spider is thought to be like chicken in taste and texture. Most spiders are complimented with a herb dip, a popular one being lime and black pepper. These fabulous foods from around the world are considered to be a normal part of a healthy diet in their respective countries, so next time you’re feeling peckish why not try something a little different? Let us know if you manage to fi nd somewhere with fried spider or snake wine on the menu!

tAke A hike! For many people, keeping fit has become an all consuming obsession surrounding the ethos of “no pain, no gain” – pumping iron, hitting the treadmill or running machine and pushing yourself to the limit. And if that’s your thing – hey, good for you! But there are more enjoyable and far less taxing ways of keeping fit, one of which is walking. It’s cheap, gentle, sociable – and it’s very good for mind and body. Fancy a stroll?
it’s Good for me, But WhAt ABout the countryside?
is it reAlly thAt Good for you?
i’ll stick to the Gym So you’ve fallen into that age old trap of thinking hiking is the exclusive preserve of Mr and Mrs Middle Aged, all woolly hats, long socks and packed lunches haven’t you?
convince me! Well, for a start, hiking is popular. Very popular. Millions of people across the UK regularly indulge in a long walk as their preferred leisure pursuit and at all ages – it really is an activity everyone can take part in. 32 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
Yes indeed. Studies have confirmed the health benefits of hiking, including losing excess weight, decreasing hypertension, and improving mental health. It’s also sociable – you’re out with like minded people, chatting and getting to know them – and enjoying the countryside. Everyone’s a winner.
is it exPensive? Not really – and there are certainly no expensive monthly payments. Most hikers carry a backpack in which they have water, food and a map. The equipment you have depends on how seriously you take it. If you just fancy a gentle stroll then a good pair of walking boots is all you’ll really need. Alternately, if you’re up for a day long hike in the Lake District, you’ll need a bit more than just that!
Good point. There are environmental issues to take into consideration – last Summer for example, there were so many people climbing Snowdon, there was a long queue of hikers just waiting for the chance to get to the top! And, whilst your activity alone may not cause much damage to the countryside, the mass effect of countless walkers all in the same place over a short period of time can have a detrimental effect – including soil erosion and, sadly, the accumulation of litter. We mustn’t go out into the great outdoors and leave our responsibilities behind.
look After the countryside And it’ll look After you? It’s a two way thing. Hiking is easy on the mind and body, and, if you are careful and sensitive to your surroundings, it’s easy on them as well. Peace of mind and body all round. Now that’s got to be worth a try hasn’t it? For more information refer to ramblers.org.uk

hoMe rUn! You’d be forgiven for thinking of baseball as solely an American preserve, but you can actually find it closer to home thanks to the Southampton Mustangs! They’ve been playing in the top division of the National Baseball League (or NBL, the British answer to the US’s Major League Baseball) since 2010, having been founded by a group of students from the University of Southampton in 1997.
WRITTEN BY chris Morley
So, join Mayhem! in the batting cages as we find out more. Batter up...
PlAy BAll! first Pitch The newly-founded club initially had to content itself with playing friendly matches against other universities before hosting competitive tournaments, starting in 1998. Among the opponents were Royal Holloway, Norwich, Oxford, Cambridge and a tasty derby match against Portsmouth. It took nearly ten years for them to be promoted into the NBL, and in their fi rst full season in 2010 they reached the national fi nal four championship games! If that weren’t enough they went on to do so again for the next three years, with player interest becoming so great that a second team has been in existence for two years, allowing both students and other interested parties to learn baseball’s basics at the university’s Wide Lane sports grounds. If this sounds like something that could be of interest to you, see southamptonmustangs.co.uk. 34 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
the mAJor leAGues The NBL season is underway with the Mustangs starting against the Southern Nationals at Farnham. Baseball in this country is regulated by the British Baseball Federation (britishbaseball.org), with a Great Britain national team also a muchcelebrated part of proceedings. They’ll be taking part in European Championship qualifiers from 22–27th July, and should the game be welcomed back into the Olympic fold (having been removed following its last outing in 2008 at the Beijing Games) as anticipated for the 2020 event, they’ll be there too.
To read more on the effort to get bat and ball back on the Olympian pantheon, visit wbsc.co and take a look at the Play Ball 2020 campaign. Worth a look, considering the proud history of the game on this side of the pond – its peak in terms of popularity arriving just before the Second World War, when crowds averaging 10,000 would turn up to see some homegrown home runs. Clubs would often share grounds with their footballing equivalents (the Baseball Ground in Derby was actually home to the men with bats before football’s proudest Rams stepped in), and Great Britain beat the US to win the fi rst ever World Cup of Baseball in 1938. The tournament was sadly discontinued in 2011 but will return in a new format next year alongside an under 21 equivalent. So, what more to say than “play ball”!

fAther’s dAy Written by hAyley sMith
as Father’s Day looms upon us once more, we make sure that last minute shopping for socks has been done. While mother’s are showered with jewellery, expensive perfumes and flowers, Dad gets the market’s finest deal. Mayhem! looks into why the paternal holiday is not taken as seriously as Mother’s Day…
the oriGin
Don’t forget! Sunday 15th June
Father’s Day was unofficially recognised in 1924, 15 years after Mother’s Day had been declared a national celebration. In 1972 in America, President Nixon made Father’s Day official, and that it was to happen every third Sunday of June. This year, it falls on Sunday 15th June – we at Mayhem! strongly suggest you don’t forget!
the cost As the provider of the family, dad’s job is to splash his hard earned cash in order to give us the best possible start in life. With this in mind, it’s only fair that we spoil him on Father’s Day. Statistics show that £4.9 billion is spent per year on his special day. That sounds impressive until you realise that £6.7 billion is spent on Mother’s Day annually. So why is this the case? 36 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
Broken fAmilies
it meAns more to mum… Many people believe that more is spent on Mum because she is more receptive to gifts than Dad is. She gushes over the flowers she wakes up to (even though they were bought at last minute from the local garage), she’s thrilled with the cooked breakfast you make her and is much more vocal with her appreciation. Dad says “thanks” and “that’s just what I wanted.” That’s the best you’ll get out of him, but deep down he appreciates it just as much as Mum does.
In the US alone, 15 million children live with only their Mum, and their Dad is not part of their lives. In the UK, the figure is significantly less with 1.9 million one-parent families. These figures only increase the popularity of Mother’s Day as there is an absence of dads in many children’s lives.

the Art
of GoinG
missinG all around the world there are missing pieces of great art, so join us as we don our floppy hats, scarves and massive coats and prepare to look into the facts behind the iconic pieces.
Every cultured soul appreciates good art, it stands to reason. We’ve all walked around a gallery and let out a well-timed “ooh” or “interesting” in a bid to seem more refined than our fellow visitors and some of us even have a genuine passion for the subject! But whether or not you’ve ever taken up a paintbrush under your own steam, we all love a good mystery.
the WAr of Art Perhaps the most famous case of art going missing dates back to World War II. Of course anyone who’s studied the period in-depth knows of Hitler’s exhibition of Degenerate Art (or Entartete Kunst in the original German). All the works within the showpiece in Munich in 1937 were deemed to have been painted by “un-German” enemies of the state, and Adolf Ziegler, the head of the Reich Chamber of Visual Art (or Reichskammer der Bildenden Kunst) was placed in charge of a commission, which went about forcibly seizing works by everyone from Chagall and Matisse to Picasso and Van Gogh. A large amount of the artwork on show was then either burnt, sold to private collectors or taken by higher-ups like Hermann Goring for personal use. It’s said that he took around 14 pieces, with more found underground in later years after the Red Army liberated Berlin, which are now on display in St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum. 38 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
A further massive haul was found in the possession of Cornelius Gurlitt (son of wartime art dealer/historian Hildebrand) in March 2012 at his Munich apartment; 121 of which were framed, with an astounding 1,258 unframed pieces!
PlAyinG to the GAllery Perhaps the most famous paintings known to have been stolen and still missing or presumed destroyed include Johannes Vermeer’s The Concert (pinched to order as part of a heist from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts, with a massive $500,000 reward for its return), Caravaggio’s Nativity With St Francis and St Lawrence, Claude Monet’s Waterloo Bridge, London and Lucien Freud’s Woman With Eyes Closed. Luckily for the artistic welfare of the world, several stolen paintings are later recovered, a fate which smiled on the likes of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, Edgar Degas’s Count Lepic and His Daughters, Cezanne’s The Boy In The Red Vest and Caravaggio’s St Jerome Writing. If all this has inspired you to get out and see similar works up close, try the Portsmouth City Museum gallery (portsmouthcitymuseums.co.uk) or Aspex at Gunwharf Quays (aspex.org.uk) to paint a decent picture of Portsmouth’s art-life! to advertise in Mayhem! With recent reports revealing that vinyl records are making a surprising comeback, with an increase in sales of up to 33% this year alone, Mayhem! decided it was a great opportunity to dust down the old LPs, crank up the turntables and rewind to the archives of other musical formats.
Get into the Mayhem! groove! vinyl The earliest analogue format was a pressed vinyl disc (record) available in speeds of 33 1/3 or 45 rpm (revolutions per minute) in LP (long play) and EP (extended play). They were the popular choice of format for the rock ‘n’ roll generation. Although now in decline, DJs, collectors and a new young audience have kept sales steady. With many classic reissues from bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones sat alongside new indie band releases, additional features like artwork and liner notes have given the record an edge over downloads alone. 40 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
8-trAck/ comPAct cAssette Seen as an alternative to vinyl, the short-lived magnetic 8-track was more popular in the US in the late 60s and was incorporated into automobiles with limited commercial success. However it was replaced with the blank cassette (MC), and was ideal for recording records (dubbing) and making your own personalised mixtape to impress a potential date! The introduction of the Sony Walkman made the cassette cool and portable in a way music had not been up until then.
cd/mini disc The digital revolution came with the introduction, in the 80s, of the smaller compact disc. Replacing vinyl, CDs grew in popularity due to their crisp, clean sound and features like programs and track skipping. The MiniDisc (the digital equivalent of the cassette) was introduced in the late 90s. Badly marketed and with limited pre-recorded albums, it was slow to take off and ultimately a flop.
doWnloAds Disposable, compact and easy to create and share on the internet, the MP3 file (an encoding format for digital audio) saw the birth of the music download. The turn of the millennium brought with it the latest musical revolution when Apple release iTunes and the iPod. Your own playlists could be downloaded or “ripped” to order. Music was sexy again, futuristic and personal!

more thAn Just A Body The aim of our mission, and indeed the day as stated by the organisers themselves, is to ‘celebrate and honour the body of water which links us all, for what it provides humans and what it represents’. And there are a number of compelling reasons we should all do so, as the oceans do a lot of important work for the natural world. With quite a ‘to do list’ every day, which numbers among its most important jobs, regulating world climate, generating a large amount of the oxygen we breathe and cleaning the water we drink.

And it’s easy enough to say thanks for a job well done, as worldoceansday.org will tell you – you can spread its gospel in four easy ways: Change perspective – encourage individuals to think about what the ocean means to them and what it has to offer all of us with hopes of conserving it for present and the future generations.
Tribute Night
25th July
Learn – discover the wealth of diverse and beautiful ocean creatures and habitats, how our daily actions affect them, and how we are all interconnected.
Celebrate – whether you live inland or on the coast we are all connected to the ocean; take the time to think about how the ocean affects you, and how you affect the ocean, and then organise or participate in activities that celebrate our world ocean.
When the GoinG Gets touGh, the touGh Get GoinG So said Billy Ocean, a possible celebrity ambassador for the cause (and let’s face it, if he isn’t they’re missing a trick). Here aboard the sub, though, we recognise his solidarity – our alarm tone is a section of his 1977 hit Red Light Spells Danger, and we admire his gusto in just getting on with it in the face of everything. Like him, you can get going on organising an event to promote the World Oceans Day creed – worldoceansday.org is a good starting point. There’s even a handy guide to getting started. Personally, we rather like the collaboration with Dr Seuss’s classic One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, a high water mark of children’s literature even if we’re not sure he was really a qualified doctor – check it out, it just might be cooler than a cat in a hat.

Cheddar cheese, mustard, and sauerkraut served on potato bread. Taking a page out of the German cookbook for a day. Gooey cheese and spicy mustard served on top of potato bread. This will fill you up for hours… days…probably a week with all those carbs.

Chinese burger
Pork burger with black bean garlic sauce, cantonese vegetables topped with grilled bok choy. A bit more exotic than your ham, egg and cheese. Why not trade in the beaten beef for pork, dress it up with a garlicky black bean sauce and throw on some juicy, fresh veggies.

BBQ tiMe!
The Blue Vinnie
Deep fried gravy
Blue Stilton and portobello mushroom. Fry off a load of portobello mushrooms in a little butter topped with a strong smelly Blue Stilton you’ll never get a plain burger again….
No I’m not joking. The discs of gravy are breaded and cooked so that when you take the fi rst bite, the warm, molten gravy oozes out and coats the burger. Think of it like the burger equivalent of a soup dumpling.
The Mighty Veggie leggie
Two beef patties, aged Cheddar, crispy bacon, garlic mayo, salad, relish and dill pickle. So on top of your already uber-meaty burger you top it off with not one but two beef patties. Incredible. And yet there’s more… crispy bacon, cheese, relish. Warning… heart burn, an inability to move and serious weight gain are likely.
Tempered tofu with a spicy satay, coconut and coriander sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, pea shoots and aioli. A bit more tricky, but defi nitely worth it. We imagine a BBQ must be pretty bore.com for the veggies out there so… why not try a battered tofu burger with a mouth-warming spicy satay sauce. Refreshed with a light coconut and coriander sauce, cucumber and aioli. N.B – Another great substitute for tofu- haters is falafel, it’s super quick and tastes great.
Kiwi Burger Beetroot, egg, pineapple, aged cheddar, salad, mayo and relish. Pretty similar to the Aussie burger…but they’re just across the sea. The Kiwi’s are out with the bacon and in with the pineapple, don’t knock not till you try it!
Pork & chorizo with brie and spicy tomato salsa
Australian burger
Spicy, meaty and gooey…yum yum! The spicy chorizo sausage complements the meaty burger beautifully, topped off with some gooey brie and refreshing jalapenoes – a Mexican delight.
Goats cheese & caramelised onions A good strong goats cheese, heaped teaspoon of sweet, sticky caramelised onions. A glamorised, quick and easy supplement to the standard cheese and onion topping. Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk
Slices of pancetta, Cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, pickled beetroot, eggs sunny side up and, of course, ketchup. We all know the Aussies do it best when it comes down to BBQs. So why not be inspired this summer to ditch the cheese and fry up an egg!

Blasting through to the
next
level! Do you remember the feeling of excitement and fear of going up to a new class or school?
Now is a good time to talk to your kids about these changes. Fear of the unknown is the worst thing especially for imaginative young minds. It is a good idea to ask your child to write a list of questions themselves. You never know what their concerns might be.
Always talk to the new teacher or school about your child’s special needs, personality, strengths and weaknesses. Understanding a child is usually a great way to help teach that child. Practical preparations are important also to help the child get ready mentally. A new uniform or bag might seem a small thing, but it might help your little superhero think themselves into a new role.
Many of our little superheroes will soon be pushing through to the next level at school. This may be a transition between Infant to Junior or Junior to Senior. Even changing year groups can be a lot for younger children.
if you do have any concerns about your child’s progress in reading, writing, spelling and maths please do not hesitate to call howard and linda on 023 92 755923.

Mayhem! turns up the volume with local lad, Radio 1 DJ and founder of one of the south’s favourite summer festivals, Bestival... as he gives an exclusive insight into the industry.
interVieW by hAyley sMith AnD BrAdley Moore
Rob k n a B da DJ’ing for Radio 1, running a business and organising the annual Bestival and Camp Bestival, how do you find the time to fit it all in? I love being busy and go a bit stir crazy if I’m not spinning 20 plates. We have a crack team of staff at Bestival HQ who keep everything running so it’s not like it’s just me! Who would be your perfect artists to work with and why? Well it depends what were talking about – the record label or festivals? Label wise I love working with all our acts from Kitty, Daisy and Lewis to Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and now David Lynch to try and put out their perfect record, how they want it to sound and how they want it to look. Festival wise there are still quite a few on the hit-list from Prince to Kate Bush, Dolly Parton to Vangelis and I’d love to get Kraft werk and the Beastie 50 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
Boys back but sadly that’s not gonna happen. Seemingly everyone who’s played Bestival has always delivered a great show so that’s all we can ask for. It’s not about me or our team, it’s about what the paying public get to see. Growing up in the south, can you describe the scene while you we’re making a name for yourself? Well I was born in Portsmouth and went to school there but actually lived nearer Southampton, so I’ve always had divided loyalties! When I was about 15 Madchester hit the streets of Pompey and that was my first really big musical love. Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspirals and all those bands. Portsmouth was awash with people in flares and daisy necklaces – pretty funny. At the same time I was really into hip hop and funk and then I was going to London at the weekends
and trying to sneak into acid house raves. So it was one big melting pot of styles. I started DJ’ing at the Rhino Club in Southampton when I was about 17 playing hip hop, house and anything real – all mixed very badly! Then I moved to South London for University and that’s when I started my club Sunday Best. Who were you inspired by? Defi nitely listening to John Peel lying in bed after ‘lights out’ when I should have been asleep. Best voice ever on radio and still the most influential radio DJ. I was also really inspired by David Bowie, Lou Reed, New Order, pop art and my mates. My school and most adults around me didn’t have anything in common with me or my friends so we created our own scene throwing beach parties and house parties and that kind of set the scene for the rest of my party starting.

on the decks with… What classifies ‘left field’ music? Well it’s a throwaway term as so many labels are in music. I suppose it means music that isn’t designed to sell to a mass market and isn’t overtly poppy, but I love pop music, grew up on it and still love it, so it’s a tricky defi nition. My Radio 1 show is about trying to unearth new music from producers and artists that might not get shouted about otherwise. Do you feel you have an obligation to expose music to the masses? Well my Radio 1 remit is to play what I want and what I feel that people might like to listen to between 5 and 7am on a Saturday so it’s a pretty open book. I hope that a weird and wonderful record played at 6.30am to a completely unsuspecting audience who are then turned onto a certain artist makes what I do worth while. Around 60,000 people attend Bestival each year. What is it that makes the festival so popular? Bestival is a magical place that pops up once a year on an island surrounded by water, only accessible by making a real effort and populated by amazingly creative, imaginative and music loving folk. It’s the audience that make Bestival really, but the hand made nature together with the love we channel into it probably gets peoples juices going too. The line up for Bestival this year looks amazing. What are you most excited about? A tricky question as I programme nearly the whole thing but OutKast is obviously a big coup for us and should be a brilliant show. I’m also really looking forward to getting Basement Jaxx back, Chic who are one of my all time best bands, Wild Beasts, Sven Vath, Busta Rhymes and Chvrches. But ask me tomorrow and the list will be entirely different! How do you decide what acts you want to perform at Bestival?
52 MAyheM! | may/june 2014
It’s a mixture of people I grew up listening to, acts I play on my radio show now and champion, and feedback from social media and our message-boards Why did you choose the Isle of Wight to host Bestival? We didn’t really intend to go to the island particularly. We were looking along the whole south coast but as soon as we found Robin Hill we knew we’d landed in the right spot. The island is a fantastically beautiful natural place and just happens to also have a brilliant festival heritage The Bestival themes are always unique, I’m guessing you don’t raid the fancy dress box for inspiration, so how do you go about choosing the final idea? Me and Josie argue like cat and dog over what we should go for each year. We don’t want it to be too obvious but we do want people to have to think. Desert Island Disco follows on really well from last years HMS Bestival nautical theme so we decided on that pretty quickly What is the story behind your name, Rob da Bank? I’m afraid there’s no hilarious story involved here. A guy called Ben who worked with me behind the bar at the place where I started Sunday Best just told me I needed a DJ name and it should be Rob The Bank which it was for a few months, then somehow got changed to Rob da Bank. It’s silly and I’m not sure how it’s stuck, but it has! With the likes of Snoop Dogg, Elton John and Fatboy Slim in 2013, do you think this year could top its success? Yes for sure. The energy and atmosphere does get better every year. Bestival’s never been about the headliners. The whole mix of what we’re doing this year is so strong.
onto the future Bestival Line-up? Be a bit different. Don’t copy your heroes too much and persist until you get what you want. I worked very hard for ten years before things really kicked off for me and I didn’t even intend on being a DJ or being on the radio or starting a festival so good things can come to you if you just stick to your guns What has been the most exciting moment in your career so far? I move on very quickly from anything good that I’ve achieved. Awards, medals, meeting famous people and all that is pretty useless in the real world. My wife, kids, mates and freedom are much more exciting in the grand scheme of things. Then again meeting the Wu Tang Clan was fun! Who would you recommend following, other than yourself? John Niven, the author is very funny, Irvine Welsh for some Scotch humour, Miranda Sawyer the journalist for Insight and Ricky Gervais for upsetting religious people. FACT magazine and Pitchfork for new music. What’s next for Rob da Bank? I’ve just fi nished working on my fi rst TV show where I was the music supervisor and even wrote some of the music for one of the episodes. It’s set in Manchester, but all will be revealed soon so I won’t give the game away. Lots of DJ’ing at festivals across the summer and we’ve just started a new company called Earworm sorting out music for TV and fi lms, so that’s defi nitely an area I’m really into at the mo.
