Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Signs and symbols are representations of real, existing, dynamic objects. The relationship between form and content is totally arbitrary and immaterial. They are used to convey relationship between concepts and form by pop-based architects. On the contrary, the diagram projective towards possibility and new world. It is utilised to produce new organisations, new sensations and moods by pragmatists.

To model the pavilion, I model a cube, two soptheres and one ellipsoid under the guide of plan view and sections. To get rid of the void, which is physically modelled, Boolean Difference command is applied.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Hertzberger against extreme functionalism for architecture as it minimise the function of the space and restrict its flexibility. Users are supposed to interpret function of the space by their interest. The simple structure of the pavillion does not limit users’ movement and doesn’t define a certain path. The empty void gives its users freedom to stand, sit and lay down. The dynamic shadow performs as threshold of public and privacy and is not fixed, which brings various experience of the space during a day.

Week Two
Isometric
Radix Isometric My key concept is to explore the relationship between privacy and shadow. The threshold, which is privacy here, is highly impacted by shadow and physical structure of the pavillion. People usually feel sense of privacy when they are surrounded by the wall. The changing shadow also suggests that threshold can be dynamic when the environment changes. The circulation is naturally informed by the structure of this pavillion. People usually regard two large opening as entrances and hesitate along the water for a opening view. As the physical structure directly impact on the threshold, I project dash lines to the hiden part to better illustrate its construction. I also highlight the area where the pavillion meets the ground, which helps to analysis the entrance.

Week Two Diagrams
Circulation: Path Vs Density
Threshold: Shadow vs Privacy
The bottom diagram shows the movement path: the two large openings are the main entrances and people normally take the water side as a viewing platform. As a result the density near the water is high, regardless of the lack of entrance there.
The shadow analysis in the middle is based on the physical form of void. Overlaying shadow at different time in a day (9am, 12pm and 3pm), the area that has a stable shadow condition is found. It correspondingly forms the experience of privacy and public.

Appendix
Process
Left: Make2D to get the outline of the pavillion, I especially turn on the hidden line button to show the inner structure that is hidden in isometric view. Adjust the line weight and type in Adobe Illustrator to better show the structure: 2pt line for outline, 1pt dash line for hidden lines. Middle: After adjust the line in AI, I export the images to Photoshop to add gradience. I also apply texture to the Isometric to analysis the environment and material. Right: Photoshop is used to manage the layout. I apply gradience to the isometric view for a harmonious layout.
