WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) “Perspectivais is a Latin word meaning “seeing through”. Durer’s first rule suggests that perpendicular or orthogonal will meet at a “vanishing point” which is determined by the perpendiculars from the picture plane and the eye. The second rule suggests that all parallel lines have the same vanishing points no matter which direction they lie.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Described as a “Central Perspective“ space, the unchanging homogenous space can be seen with a single and immobile eye. At the same time, the planar cross section of the visual pyramid can pass for an adequate reproduction of our optical image.

INVISIBLE CITY: Fedora As mentioned in the article, Fedora is a city mainly consisits of stone buildings but a metal museum in its centre. Displaying all kinds of ideal cities in crystal globes, the museum provides the residents with a platform to explore, express and appreciate their desires. Rather than stick to the imagination of people, described in the article, the focus of my design is the principle of ‘desire‘ itself. At the same time, the function of the building as a place to explore more about desire is emphasised through transfering the matierial architecture to be a representation of people’s soul and inner world when they face desires in real life.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC

The Museum of Fedora: Exploring the desire As mentioned before, the design aims to represent people’s inner comflits when facing desires through the scene of walking around the building. To realise this, the building is set to have two levels, the ground floor representing the dark side of desire while the upper floor the positive side, according to the light it receives. In the centre of the building places a large crystal globe which represents the deepest desire of all life: freedom. A twisting minerat settled around the crystal globe connects the real world and the ideal imagination while enables people to hang around two levels. Aiming to show the inner actions when people face with desires through the presentation of visiting mesume. The visit of the museum represents various reaction of desire.

Visitors on the ground floor fails to control their desires and have to tolerate the darkness while the upper floor is much lighter to inspire those who can control their desires well. The scenes of the outside vary as well. People do not stay at one place but keep moving, which suggests that people keeps changing in dfferent situations.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS The Museum of Fedora: Exploring the desire Twelve patterns of notations are applied in tatal. Relative keys are placed at important places to suggest the conflicts between desire and self-control. Those are reflected by the perspectives as well. To identify the winner and loser of the battle with desire, there are diffenrent keys to show their movement. Movement A and B for the loser and winner seperately. Arriving the museum at its main gate on the ground floor (left-hand side), people walks around to appreciate displayed crystal globes (desires), which suggestes hesitation when first face with desires. During this process, their mood changes according to the scene they see and need to make decisions about which route to choose. There are four routes: stay on the ground floor and be sentenced to hell, which is at the right-hand side of the ground floor; go upstairs and appreciate the beauty of freedom; drop from the upper floor plus go to heaven. QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1 I choose this scene as it focus on the minerat and the crystal globe in the centre of the building, while provides enought space to design the medusa pond as well.

Perspective 2 The roof and minerat in this scene clearly suggests that this is the upper floor. Enabling the display of the angels in the crystal globe, it also gives a clear scene of the surrounding environment. At the same time, the inner space is large enough to show characters in various distance and directions.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Perspective 1: Choir To The Minerat This graph describes the scene that the choir has managed to defeat their desires and is about to go upstair through the minerat. The kids represents the purer souls thus they are more likely to control desires. People stands around the crystal globe, considering the best route. Facing desires, people can have conflicts with others about the “right solution”, shown by the couple discussing about their desires. Those have lost control of their desire can still be hesitated about their choice, such as the wowan looking back. The medusa pond is hanging over the ground, although rarely recognized by people, will always reflects their heart honestly.

Perspective 2: Secret of Angel’s Joy Those naked angels flying and playing in the globe represents the physical and mental freedom as it is pure enough for them to enjoy the joy whithout fear to worry about others’ opinion. The forest view from the windows represents an active life, suggestting that those learn to control their desires can lead a more peaceful life.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic practice includes arts of painting and sculpture, which are produced by the hand of artists and do not need furthur explanation. Allographic practice includes music, written work that can be reproduced at a distance from the original authors / artists, which suggests that people’s view of the art piece can vary according to the way they understand the notations.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) architects need new representational techniques as architecture keeps changing and requires the designers to update with new matierials and techniches. The traditional representations suits more on stable and fixed subjects. Therefore, new representational techniques enabling exchange of information are important to architects, of which career requires plenty of communication and changes.

The notations help to deepen the understanding of the story through telling the physical movement and mental changes in the museum. These notations helps with enrich the story by emphasising on information that can’t be convey by limited graphs, while sense of reality is improved graphically.
