Why PayThink Supermarkets aren’t ready for Uber’s grocery service Pradeep Elankumaran (In October 2018), Uber’s CEO mentioned grocery delivery as a possible area of expansion during a talk at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit 2018. have a lot of vegan customers, for example, so we’ve added a lot of vegan items. We’re constantly trying to find products that will please our customers and that are also zero waste, that’s a challenge we have. Has NU become a community hub also? Yes, that’s what we always wanted. We have workshops very regularly. It’s a great way to get people into the space. In recent years, more zero-waste grocers have popped up, indicating an appetite for these storeswhy would you say that is? The issue of waste is coming on the radar much more. Two or three years ago you barely saw a headline on waste; now you see it more and more. But very often, people are aware of the problem and [know] that they should try to create less waste, but they don’t have the opportunity to do that. So, what we’re creating with the store is the opportunity. Are there lessons traditional grocers could learn from this model? I think the No. 1 thing I would say is that as a traditional retailer, you don’t have to be a zero-waste grocer to significantly reduce your waste. Do a waste audit and identify those low-hanging fruits, because they could cut waste significantly. Some grocery stores don’t even have composting in place, they don’t separate organic from non-organic waste. That is really something that is not difficult to put in place; it’s a small cost. What’s next? A second location. We’re really at the beginning of investigating where. We’re going to map out where our customers come from to see where it makes sense to open. We have some ideas, but we just need to narrow it down.

something TerraCycle has already started doing in Amsterdam. “We want to strive for Zero Waste at both the production and consumption level,” says Laurent Freixe, CEO of the Americas Region of Nestlé, which hopes to do away with all its non-recyclable packaging by 2025. “Loop is so innovative that we felt we had to be a part of it and learn from it.” The rise of the “Zero Waste” movement and concern about the environment has led many businesses to try to reduce packaging and single-use containers. Loop is unusual in its international scope and the size of the companies participating. Initially, Loop will offer about 300 products, with plans to add to the list later. According to TerraCycle, partners include Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Unilever, Mars Petcare, The Clorox Company, The Body Shop, Coca-Cola, Mondelez International, Danone, Jacobs Douwe Egberts, BIC, Nature’s Path, Thousand Fell, Greenhouse, Grilliance, Preserve, Carrefour, UPS and the sustainable-resource management company Suez. Greenpeace, which has criticized many big manufacturers for creating much of the plastic waste polluting the world’s oceans, joined in a panel about sustainable consumption at which Loop was announced in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday. Jennifer Morgan, international executive director of Greenpeace, said beforehand, “While Greenpeace welcomes the aim of the Loop Alliance to move away from throwaway culture and disposability … what the platform will mean for the environment depends on whether corporations worldwide are actually ready to change their business models, or if this effort just becomes a distracting side project to generate positive PR.” She warned that most businesses behind the initiative are still expanding production of single-use plastic, though company representatives focused on the progress they have vowed to make in adopting more sustainable packaging. Loop is slated to launch this spring in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and also in Paris and some of its suburbs. Shoppers will be able to buy Zero-Waste products from the Loop website to be delivered to their homes in specially designed shipping totes, and, eventually, at participating retailers, such as Carrefour grocery stores in Paris. Loop intends to expand to the U.S. West Coast, Toronto and the United Kingdom by the end of this year or early 2020, followed by Japan– ideally in time for the 2020 Olympics, Szaky says. “It means more delivery trucks, but far fewer garbage trucks,” he says. In anticipation of that likelihood, Standard Cognition already has

RBC said it believed Amazon would eventually introduce its cashier-less technology in its Whole Foods supermarkets, though Amazon said it had no plans to do so. For now, Amazon seems to have its eye on smaller stores: Late last year it introduced a 450-square-foot version of Amazon Go that can be plopped into office buildings or hospitals. Canadian Gas Price Forecast Calls For 'Wild Ride At The Pumps' In 2019 Daniel Tencer

overtake Montreal this year as the North American city with the highest gas taxes, McTeague said.
"If we go into a global recession all bets are off." But there is one thing that could alter that forecast and bring lower gas prices: A global recession, something a growing number of experts say could be just around the corner. "If we go into a global recession all bets are off," McTeague told HuffPost Canada. "The price of every commodity would absolutely collapse. But I don't see that happening." A new agreement between the U.S. and China that ends the trade conflict between the world's two largest economies would be enough to calm nerves about a global recession, McTeague said. In the meantime, Canadians are enjoying some of the lowest gas prices in years. Thanks to rapidly dropping prices in December, the average gas price in Canada was around $1.02 per litre on Jan. 2, the lowest average since July of 2017.

What’s more, 18 percent said they would pay 75 percent more for such items. “The research we conducted confirmed that clean label is now very much mainstream, with over half of consumers saying it’s important they recognize and trust the ingredients in a product they’re considering buying,” Hartman explained. When stocking their shelves, he recommends c-store operators make product-mix decisions based on what works commercially, while also being aware of where the store is located and the demographics in that area. There are different levels of attentiveness to labels and ingredients based on education, income and more, so knowing who shops the store is important, he said.
