January is here with the 85th Edition of MBE Business Magazine. Welcome to 2023! From everyone at MBE, we hope that you all had a happy holiday season and a Happy New Year. We hope that whatever New Year’s resolution you strive for, you are able to keep and even exceed as we start the New Year.

With winter upon us, the eternal optimist will say, “We only have three months to go until spring” and the eternal pessimist will say “We have three long months and maybe longer until the snow melts and temperatures become a little more tolerable”. What happens in January in Canada?

January marks the coldest month in Canada (although some will say February). Most of Canada is blanketed in snow, making it the perfect time to enjoy winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding. However, if you're not a fan of the cold weather, don't worry! There are plenty of indoor activities to enjoy as well. Is January a good to month to go to Canada?

The weather is pleasant (although cold) and snow conditions are generally good. Due to weather conditions, there are fewer tourists, making January the least expensive month for winter travel in Canada.

If you are reluctant to grasp below zero temperatures, you will be happy to know that not all of Canada is frosty cool in the winter. You can have the best of both worlds if you visit Vancouver and Victoria in Western Canada. They have moderate temperatures and little snow but if you travel two hours north, you can be on the slopes at the famous Whistler resort with some of the best skiing the country has to offer.

RESPECTING TALENTED PEOPLE IDENTIFYING THEIR STRENGTHS

In the business world, if you want to expand your vision for success, it’s really important to respect & acknowledge talented people. The more talented people under your umbrella, the more it will bring you up as ‘Talent Management’ & identification of talent is always a huge plus while you start moving up the ladder. In the corporate & business world, the more we think we are the best, the more we ignore the importance of talent, as Talent Management is significant for people to gain success. In the process of extracting raw talent, it’s the mingling with the talented people that shall enable you to learn more & progress with far more values. The energy that counts as mingling with talent consistently will make you more effective.

The other day I was reading this very important book, ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen Covey. The book interestingly revolves around the most vital & most key importance of talent & how it needs to be identified & nurtured.

IDENTIFICATION OF THE SPARK:

Identifying the spark in a person is most important if you want to utilize his talent in your company or any other way. What is the best thing that you have identified & the thing that can make him an asset which is a key asset for the company? Identify aspects such as how you can modify his talent for your best utilization. For instance, if you have a Mercedes, but the motor mechanic available to work for you is mainly someone who is more experienced with Toyota cars. What can you change to make him your very own mechanic?

Someone who can explore that quality in the Motor mechanic, which can make him your very own. Just like a captain knows well how to utilize a utility cricketer to break a partnership or to stick around as a batsman when needed.

USING & UTILIZING THE TALENT OF OTHERS IS KEY:

If you want to celebrate success as an entrepreneur, believe me, what’s most important is that you must know how to utilize the talent of others. Utilize the talent & identify the big spark in that person for reasons that can make him stand out from the crowd.

If you need to utilize him properly, you should work it out for him. If you need work, you definitely would need him ample amount of liberties. Liberty or leverage shall always help. Most importantly, in terms of managing the levels of loyalty.

The importance & significance of transparency can never be violated, as transparency is something that always needs to be created. Transparency always helps manage the pathways to success for both the employees & the employer.

IT’S A MANAGEMENT FAILURE, NOT ANY INDIVIDUAL’S FAILURE:

The failure to use the talent best to the abilities is a management’s big failure rather than the failure of any individual. Therefore, it’s the management’s role to be flexible according to the talent of the individuals as they know where the person belongs well. ‘Everyone is gifted, but some people never open their packages.’ However, it’s the eye of the entrepreneur or a

business owner to know how to use or utilize a certain person according to the demands of the company & the demands of the management.

Who will be justifying the calibre of an individual? It’s your core responsibility as you are the one running the umbrella & responsible for what people do & how people think in your company.

TALENT IDENTIFICATION IS MOST IMPORTANT FOR RUNNING A BUSINESS:

You are doing a business where you need a lawnmower, i.e. a machine for cutting the grass daily for your premises. You are using the lawnmower every day & you suddenly forget that it needs to be given the scheduled maintenance. You might be undergoing a loss scenario if you keep on ignoring the maintenance needed for your lawnmower. Similarly, for the smooth running of your business, one needs to have an eye that is vital for the raw identification of talent. Here, what’s the priority is first. It would help if you were a giver with your attitude. Give time & resources so that you can adapt talent & hold it.

As a person responsible for absolutely everything, you must set directions for someone exceeding their benchmarks. It’s the set benchmark that the person is exceeding, which means he is going beyond boundaries. You must figure out what needs to be done if they are going beyond boundaries.

As per an old saying, “Man is known by the company he keeps”, stick around with talented people & keep looking how they can be an asset to you. What good you can extract from them, & how well you can use their talent. Talent management is one of the most important aspects for accomplishing goals & vitally to keep performing well in the business world. CANADA IS A LAND OPEN FOR ALL ACCORDING TO THE LATEST MIGRATION POLICIES- 2023

Canada is a very open land in terms of migrations & the number of people coming to Canada annually. The maximum number of inflow are being taken from countries all over the globe as Canada is a nation which is open to all. This includes people from various walk of life like services sector, engineering field, medical profession, social sciences, research, law, finance, management and IT. The policies are merged accordingly for people who wish to work in Canada in different sectors & fields.

The largest North-American country in terms of Area & the Second-Largest country in the world needs people due

The GTS helps certain & selected Canadian employers to hire highly-skilled talent from around the world, enabling them to compete on a more international scale. The employ-

A GOAL-ORIENTED WORK FORCE TRULY MEANS SUCCESS FOR A COMPANY

A goal-oriented workforce is the true meaning of success for a company. This is irrespective of the size of the company & its location. It's the coordination & teamwork in a workforce that counts for larger success & mutual goals. Suppose the goals of the firm are aligned together for the sake of mutual goals, in that case there will be no obstacles that are higher amid the goals. This is regardless of ability, as the resources & the dynamics in these days are enough for the sake of being goal-oriented.

It's the focus which is increased to a larger extent for the sake of achieving

success & also at a far higher rate. Being goal-oriented not only increases the focus but also is a huge factor in the overall motivation of the company & the levels of commitment associated. The next on the list is achievement, as naturally, achieving goals results from being goal-oriented. Ultimately, it is something that benefits both the workers & the company. It's a score which counts largely due to the result-oriented nature of being goal-oriented. How it benefits both the workers & the company? The answer to this is simply in multiple ways, as the worker's benefits are enough to sustain their career & career development goals. For the company & the vision, collective goals are achieved.

As a goal-oriented workforce, you just need to set some realistic targets, break them into pieces for convenience, have a plan to achieve them & finally, come up with a backup plan. Human and/or Animal: The Morals, Ethics and Responsibilities of the Highly Intelligent Part One

There are intelligent Humans and is their ingenuity something they have developed or is it an attribute Nature has arbitrarily provided. If Nature granted this favourable ability; was it for the advantage of those fortunate Humans?

First, we need a definition of whom should be included in this Highly Intelligent (HI) Category. We can use the Mensa qualification of the 98 th percentile or higher on a standardized intelligence test as a foundation. Since there are approximately eight billion Humans, there would be 160 million or so of these brainy folks available to service Humanity and Nature, with each individual country having a comparative two percent of its population included.

The following five questions may assist your efforts determining the source of your extraordinary Human skills, traits and attributes:

2 – Did you request the skills, traits and attributes you were born with? Yes / No

3 – Did you choose your birthdate? Yes / No

The argument can be made that absolutely everything that made/makes you a potential Human had/has nothing to do with you – you cannot help being who you are! Your DNA is the result of millions of years of Nature’s efforts, and trillions of mutations (none of your choosing). But HI folks (with remarkable innate capabilities) may be able to adjust their attributes and attitudes through diligent exertion benefiting Humankind and the Biosphere. “He [Human] discovered in himself an ability to choose his own way of life without being tied to any single one like the other animals.” (Immanuel Kant, 1724-1804)

Prior to reviewing the thoughts and discussions presented, you may wish to reconsider your answers to the five initial questions. And if you recorded one or more ‘Yes’ responses; you may wish to forgo the rest of this essay.

Assisting further, we can scrutinize Bill Gates, who is obviously an outstanding Human. However, in addition to his five Nos above (my assumption), Malcolm Timothy Gladwell highlights in his 2008 ‘Outliers’ an interesting series of events aiding Bill:

- His Lakeside high school had access to a time-sharing terminal in 1968

- One of the interested parents worked at C-Cubed - C-Cubed needed someone to check code on the weekends

- ISI needed someone to work on its payroll software

- Lived within walking distance of the University of Washington

Do HIs have an obligation to intervene wherever possible to decrease suffering throughout the Biosphere? No, they are not mandated to do so, as Nature does not provide them with a right and/or wrong decision-making manual. They are free to choose how best to use Nature’s endowment!

In ‘Mutual Aid: A Factor in Evolution’ by Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin (1902) we discover, “In the great struggle for life –for the greatest possible fulness and intensity of life with the least waste of energy – natural selection continually seeks out the ways precisely for avoiding competition as much as possible.”

Humans evolved within Small Groups

Humans need to better understand how Billions of Humans can ‘now’ and ‘in the future’ exist within the Biosphere recognizing many of the Human inherent tools were developed within small groups, over hundreds of thousands of years. “[…] [Ian MacDonald Robin] Dunbar’s number holds that we can only really maintain about 150 [human] connections at once.” (BBC.com)

Massive cities have and are being developed and becoming more condensed – corporations have hundreds of thousands of employees, millions of customers – Facebook has a billion and a half of users – Walmart revenues of $ 560 Billion and Amazon $ 470 billion. Can the diverse motivations of Humans effectively administer large countries and/or corporations? But there’s hope: “Considering our technical instrumentalities of communication and tabulation, it is possible to reintroduce the principle of the town meeting into contemporary mass society.” (Erich Seligmann Fromm)

In 1957, Scientist Fred Hoyle observed, “I fail to see any great difference between the social conventions of our modern civilization and those of primitive barbaric peoples.” Compare a barbaric society to an Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Walmart, Money Driven Elections, the Super Wealthy dominated one!

AMAZONS BROKEN

heaven help me! I couldn’t resist. In a corner of my office now sits a shiny new Amazon Echo smart speaker that I neither needed, nor can I justify. But at half off – a mere $65.00 – it was hard to say no.

Maybe this is why Amazon has sold over 100 million of them. It’s predicated on that classic “razor and blade” business model: sell the razor for cheap, make it up on the blades. Alas, despite huge sales, Amazon is facing two tiny problems with that approach: One, it isn’t working; and two, it’s losing the company billions of dollars.

As has been widely reported, Amazon’s “Worldwide Digital” group, responsible for all those devices who use “Alexa”, the company’s voice

or play your favourite radio station, is facing huge cuts.

In a report from Business Insider, it was revealed that the division is on track to lose a staggering $10 billion this year, and will be the main focus of 10,000 job cuts at the company. One former employee described the Alexa voice products as a “colossal failure of imagination.”

In retrospect, none of this should be surprising – neither the zeal with which Amazon pursued the strategy, nor the fact that a revenue stream hasn’t materialized.

Now, as the future of Amazon’s Alexa line is in doubt, it’s worth asking: What is a smart speaker even supposed to do?

for Alexa likely made sense at the time. Building out a business and figuring out how to monetize it after acquiring a huge user base was the norm for digital businesses for years. Google, Facebook, and others grew their way to billions using just that approach.

For their part, Amazon execs assumed their voice products would eventually translate into voice based shopping. As people grew accustomed to this virtual assistant in their home, asking it questions and using it for basic tasks, it would spur them to ask “Alexa, reorder toilet paper.”

That never happened, for perhaps obvious reasons. For one, if occasionally asking Alexa to “play Dire Straits” results in it telling you what Diet Coke is, one is hardly going

compelling.

Amazon’s other plan – that third party companies such as Domino’s or Uber would have voice based transactions, while Amazon got a cut – simply never materialized , for reasons very similar to why Alexa-based shopping never took off.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but one might still ask: Why did an e-commerce company ever delve into smart speakers at all?

The answer is AWS, Amazon’s cloud computing business, which turned out to be Amazon’s most profitable division.

Netflix, for example, doesn’t run all that streaming video off its own hardware; it uses Amazon’s. Instead of only selling its capacity to others, Amazon decided it could also be used to crunch requests for its own products – everything from “Alexa, do I need an umbrella today?” to “Alexa, who was the actor in Mission Impossible?”

It seemed like the perfect synergy… at least, until it became clear there’s no clear revenue stream.

Now Amazon seems faced with a choice: find a way to make Alexa profitable, or cut its losses and move on.

The latter option is unlikely, both for the hit to its brand –imagine millions with now useless Echo devices! And that voice is genuinely helpful. Using voice is not just easy, but also more accessible to many such as seniors.

One possibility is to find a service, which is actually useful, attached to Alexa devices – likely related to the smart home – and charge a monthly fee for it to bring in recurring revenue.

There are, however, significant challenges there: whether it is privacy, or the consumer pushback against paying to make things they own work or keep working.

If, however, there is nothing to recoup the loss of selling something at cost, then Amazon needs to do something radical: pitch the Alexa line as a product worth paying for. If a device is actually useful – based on my many Alexa products, they are – then it makes sense to simply charge more for them.

In that sense, Amazon needs to think more like Apple: That company’s Siri-based HomePod line may not have set the world on fire, but like everything Apple sells, it price means Apple still make a healthy margin.

Cuts will help. So, too, will a leaner, more aggressive focus on the devices themselves.

But for Alexa to finally become profitable, the company will have to focus on something very simple: making a product that people want to buy because of what it can do for them… not what it might do for the company that makes it.

Google’s Pixels Deserve A Look

The history of capitalism is littered with products that were great, but still failed. The video format Betamax is one such famous flop: technically better than VHS, but usurped due to its lack of customer friendliness and marketing.

And for a while, it seemed like Google’s Pixel smartphone line was doomed to a similar fate: overlooked, underfunded and despite some

month, it seems Google might, after many years, be taking the Pixel brand seriously again – and based on Google’s own optimism, there may well be reason for consumers to as well.

At an event, held last month, Google announced a new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro with the expected improvements in performance camera quality. There is now finally a Pixel Watch, which

It’s an aggressive move from Google, and one expected to have an effect. Nikkei reports that the company doubled orders to eight million units. Keep in mind that Apple sells 10 times that amount a year; but given that some past models have sold 200,000 units in a quarter, it’s a sign of optimism nonetheless.

It represents a change in approach by Google – that is, it feels more purposeful, thoughtful and targeted.

For the unfamiliar: Google’s Pixel phone was first released in 2013 and was always meant to be a sort of halo product from the maker of Android, the world’s most popular smartphone operating system. The idea was that rather than a slew of different varieties of Android from Samsung, HTC, OnePlus and others, a Pixel phone would give pure Android

cameras match or exceed the best from Samsung and Apple.

Where it did not succeed, however, was in sales or in moving the market much. What Google wanted with Pixel was akin to what Microsoft did and is still doing with the Surface line: produce the best example of what an operating system could do to both create a new hardware revenue stream for the parent company, but also encourage partner companies to up their game.

Unlike Microsoft’s slow success with Surface, however, Pixel sales were always paltry, and things were made worse by the fact that early models were plagued by bugs.

But the more recent Pixel 6 models were well reviewed and sold slightly better. The camera is as great as everyone says and, unlike the Android of yesteryear, the software is clean and fast.

The new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro look to follow on that success. There is also a Pixel Watch that seems likely to finally give Android users an equivalent device to the Apple Watch. Early looks are cautiously optimistic.

The company also showcased a Pixel Tablet that will launch in 2023. While it will function as a normal iPad-like tablet, the device will also be able to be docked on a base that will both charge the device and turn into a smart speaker.

It’s clever: Rather than trying to compete with Apple and make a strict iPad competitor – and likely failing in the

It’s the kind of thing Google needs to do. The lucrative higher end of the tech market is dominated by Apple because the products work well, and work well together.

It is unlikely Google will ever really compete at that level, and indeed that may not be its aim. Instead, it may simply be willing to produce a compelling product lineup that produces a comparatively small but growing amount of revenue, and encourages its Android partners to do the same.

It’s a long climb. But with the most recent announcements, what once seemed implausible – that Google could turn the Pixel line into something worth taking seriously – now seems a little more possible.

400,000 NEW JOBS, AS THE VACANCIES REMAINS HIGH

The latest report concerning Immigration Canada has confirmed an addition of approximately 400,000 jobs as the vacancies in both provinces remains high. This latest development is for the sake of people so that they invest in their future in the two provinces.

The job vacancy rate, i.e. the total number of vacancies or vacant positions in proportion to the demand for labour, is increased to a huge 5.7%. This increase for the two provinces is being termed the most annual increase in any province of Canada. This is due to the indication of a continued need to fill the positions amid employee shortages. The employee

shortages in the two provinces are found in various sectors, as identified by the concerned parties.

The Identified Sectors For Sake Of Job Vacancies: According to the statistics in Canada, there are various sectors with job vacancies. However, only some are the ones that continue to have job vacancies due to the procedures in play. The health care & social assistance sector saw approximately 160,000 vacant positions in September. This is year-over-year that saw an increase of at least 25% in job vacancies, likely tied to the continued high demand for professionals in this sector. Also, including doctors, nurses,

physicians & surgeons etc., in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The other one is the accommodation & food services sector. It's a sector that is in continuous search for labour. The accommodation & food services sector saw at least 150,000 positions found vacant in September, i.e. an increase of 11% from August. A massive reason for a high increase is the seasonal effects, as the normalization efforts to Pre-Pandemic protocols are yet another cause of the growth in hiring. There are encouraging signs for the future in this sector as it has remained at a high throughout the year.

Now comes the Retail Trade, where the demand for people increased automatically after the pandemic. However, the retail trade saw a very slight increase in job vacancies, i.e. approximately 118,000 vacant positions in September. The job vacancy rate of 5.5 %, i.e. close to 6%, is an indication which is ironic that this is the sector where there is a continued need for workers.

The last one is the Manufacturing sector & this is the only one which has seen a decline from almost 92K to 77K in a month from August to September.

Canada Faces A Record Number Of Job Vacancies:

The answer to this record number of job vacancies is immigration. It's immigration that continues to be at the forefront of grappling with the labour shortages in the country.

It's the Canadian Govt. along with the IRCC, i.e. Immigration Refugees & Citizenship Canada, which continues to play its role effectively. That is, for the sake of solving the labour shortages issues strategically. The IRCC continues to measure to solve these labour issues and demand for work as many old Canadian Citizens are fast getting into their retirement options. Further, the Canadian Govt. is improvising the laws to confront labour shortages with the immigration of skilled foreign workers. The government's efforts are also evident in an expansion of economic immigration pathways like Express Entry & the PNP program, also known as the Provincial Nominee Program. The Govt. also introduced an aggressive immigration plan to welcome close to 500,000 newcomers to Canada on an annual basis.

Key Note on Payroll Increases:

The payroll employment figures increased naturally by 0.5% in September & the largest gains were seen in Alberta, British Columbia & Quebec provinces. The following are the sectors that saw the biggest uptick in employment. These are Health & Social Assistance, Accommodation & Food Services &

Retail Trade. These are seen as some positive signs in these three sectors in Canada. All these three sectors have also experienced, in the month of August, an increase in job vacancies, i.e. hiring activities, increases in payroll employees, i.e. the people hired and finally, an increase in the overall value of goods and services produced.

All these are highly positive signs as the country Canada moves forward from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic towards the pre-pandemic levels of economic output.

The IRCC & the Canadian Govt. are making efforts together to cope effectively with the demands. These are the rising demands of the Canadian Govt. which are also termed labour demands. Hence, both share a relationship which is highly connected with the demand for labour after making an analysis of labour shortages & the economic conditions, also known as economic turmoil. However, in case a country or a Province is facing one, especially due to certain circumstances. Canada has faced a record number of job vacancies in almost all sectors including Professional Scientific & Technical Services.

WHY PAY $8.00 FOR TWITTER BLUE

The first thing I think you should understand about Elon Musk’s brief time as the owner of Twitter is that it’s a bit like if an English professor bought a dumpster on fire. Things weren’t going great already and, though an English professor might be smart, dumpster fires are not part of their expertise.

But as Musk has taken control of the platform and shaken things up radically – most notably with a plan to charge users $8.00 U.S. a month to be verified – it’s clear at the very least that change is in the air. What seems much less obvious is if

Musk will in fact save twitter or set it alight.

To recap: in April of this year Musk made an offer to buy Twitter at $52.40 a share. In July, however, he said he planned to terminate the deal, accusing Twitter of misrepresenting the state of the platform. Meanwhile, the market had tanked and the value of both Tesla and Twitter stock has dropped precipitously. Twitter countersued Musk to complete the deal and in September, many of Musk’s texts and messages were published as part of the legal proceedings. Then in October,

perhaps realizing he was about to lose the case or worried about further embarrassment, Musk closed the deal at the agreed upon price and became, as he put it, “Chief Twit.”

There are multiple things happening here at once. A highly driven if erratic CEO has taken control of a company in a field with which he has little experience, and is now undergoing a steep learning curve. At the same time, Twitter was a poorly run company which, in the 16 years of its existence, has rarely and barely been profitable.

Meanwhile and perhaps more pertinently, the $13 billion debt Musk took on to acquire the company means he will be on the hook for about $1 billion a year in interest payments – which to be clear, is more money than Twitter made in all of 2021.

Looked at in that light, it’s obvious why Musk wants to introduce his new version of the subscription product, Twitter Blue; despite being the world’s richest man, he needs the money.

According to reports, as of last month, for $8 a month, you can have a blue check next to your name in addition to features such as being prioritized in searches or other people’s replies.

Will it work? When it comes to Musk, never say never – but right now it’s hard to see how.

The blue check was initially introduced to verify users as being real – that is, if Justin Trudeau announced something on Twitter, you could trust it was him and not a jokester just pretending.

The program was thus meant to instill trust in users. What happened, though, is that in an effort to include both people of note and reputable media in the program, “being verified” captured both real celebrities and politicians with millions of followers but also an editor at a local news site with 500.

It was not only a little odd, but at least among some, created a perceived hierarchy on the platform between who got the blue mark and who didn’t.

Musk’s new idea, then, is to let anyone pay to get that status. Not only might it create revenue, it also (in theory) smashes the hierarchy of who is seen as legitimate.

The potential upside: large organizations might pony up the cost to verify their employees as real. Ordinary users might pay to improve their experience. And those who previously felt excluded might fork out their eight dollars regardless to join the cool kids club.

An issue though: status is a value derived through scarcity. Why pay $8 a month for something with few ostensible benefits and that becomes increasingly less valuable the more people buy in?

Then there are the numbers. In order to generate real revenue, Musk would need millions of users to sign on to Twitter Blue. Currently there are around 400,000 verified accounts. That is a massive hill to climb.

What’s more, there have been hints that Musk’s plan to reduce content moderation would embolden the very worst users. It could be that fewer rather than more people use Twitter, at least if Musk can’t get bigotry, harassment and spam under control.

Then again, if 10 years ago you had said to me that electric cars would soon be commonplace, I would have scoffed. Tesla’s success has been remarkable and an angry billionaire in debt is the very definition of a motivated party. What is clear, though, is that Musk and his team face a significant challenge ahead.

As a long time user of Twitter (yes, with a blue check) I’m very curious to see how it all plays out.

Whether I or millions of others are willing to pay each month for the privilege though? That is the question – and seems altogether much less certain.

What Banks Have To Say About Home Prices

RBC economist Robert Hogue noted in a recent report that the housing crash has affected Canada’s housing market. In places like Toronto and Vancouver, this drop is steeper than most other declines across the last half century.

As mentioned before, a recent report released by TD Bank indicates that real estate prices could fall 20–25% by the end of 2022, and the downturn will likely continue into 2023. This would make it the steepest decline since data collection started in the 1980s.

TD also projects the volume of home sales to decline by up to 35%, falling just short of similar drops experienced during the recession of 2008. Experts say condo sales will drop even more steeply compared to single detached homes. Although personal incomes are rising slowly, they were largely outpaced by skyrocketing real estate prices during the pandemic. It is unlikely that a large pullback will make things much more affordable, given how much home price growth is outpacing income growth.

Housing supply affordability is driven by a large number of
