The Via Labs project will develop 265,000 square feet of state-ofthe-art laboratory and Class ‘A’ office space at the main entrance of Hub RTP. McAdams provided surveying, SUE, concept planning, stormwater management, civil engineering and construction administration services for the life science development. The project addresses unique laboratory needs in a constrained environment while pursuing a human-scale development ethos. McAdams coordinated the interests of multiple review authorities and stakeholders to deliver project success.

STRATEGIC SITE ENGINEERING

Seamlessly blend optimal site layouts, efficient circulation and enabling infrastructure to create campuses that foster productivity and innovation.

INSPIRATIONAL COLLABORATION SUSTAINABLE SITE SOLUTIONS

From successful environmental permitting to environmentally responsible development, we champion sustainable practices that harmonize your vision with the natural world.

Confidential Client / Confidential Location

This client has embarked on design and development of a 75-acre technology campus in central North Carolina. In this competitive real estate market, distinctive placemaking is their top priority. Our placemaking strategy aims to inspire people to generate new ideas, connect with their natural environment and celebrate with others. This strategy will be implemented across the site through the creation of intentional spatial hierarchy and strategic connections. The network of spaces will provide diverse experiences and inspire awareness of and connection to the natural environment. Pedestrianfocused circulation routes, separated from vehicle traffic, open opportunities for mindfulness and socialization. The hierarchy of social spaces communicates a strong campus identity through creative and vibrant design interventions.

United Therapeutics / RTP, NC

United Therapeutics’ passion for holistic wellness and environmental sustainability is at the forefront of their 150-acre site in the Research Triangle Park. The project leads with a new 220,000-square-foot cGMP manufacturing facility, designed to achieve net-zero emissions. The EwingColedesigned facility is entirely mass-timber construction and utilizes a suite of the latest green building practices, including solar array and geothermal HVAC. McAdams is providing civil engineering and landscape architectural services to provide a highperformance site design that matches the quality of innovation found in the building. An experiential landscape is seamlessly integrated with green infrastructure systems that ensure the site meets operational requirements and provides a safe, vibrant and innovative atmosphere for the creative workforce. The McAdams landscape approach advances beyond primary native plantings and provides a soil restoration strategy that will increase landscape performance over time by improving carbon sequestration, stormwater infiltration and wildlife habitat creation. Unithers, as the employees call themselves, are immersed in this holistic approach to health, wellness and environmental care through a network of campus pathways threaded through the forest landscape. The pathways access a diverse collection of social spaces and culminate in a dramatic pedestrian bridge that carries employees through the system of stormwater gardens upon their arrival.

Centennial Innovation District + Block 7, NC State University / Raleigh, NC

A vibrant innovation environment is emerging on NC State’s Centennial Campus. Lincoln Harris with Goldman Sachs Asset Management were selected as developerpartners for a 30-acre urban, mixed-use development focused on public-private research partnerships. McAdams, in collaboration with architects LS3P and Hanbury, is providing landscape architecture and civil engineering services to support the $6-billion (est.) multi-phase project. McAdams prepared a comprehensive design guidelines package to ensure future development facilitates innovation through positive human interaction, a cohesive sense of place and a community where academia and industry collide to create the next generation of solutions. Phase one of the project includes, the campus defining street network; enabling infrastructure; and “Block 7”, a state-of-the-art life science research facility. McAdams designed a signature urban main street with ample sidewalks, integrated outdoor workstations and customizable paving patterns that build district identity. This main street leads to Innovation Plaza, the geographic and social center of the community. The adaptive public square epitomizes how McAdams engineering and landscape architecture synergize to create truly innovative research communities.
