MCALLEN COUNTRY CLUB

APRIL 2022

Dear MCC Members, Happy Spring! The weather has been perfect lately, I hope you and your family have had time to enjoy the course, the tennis courts, or perhaps the patio for dining.

First of all, thank you to Mike Perez and his staff for another great UTRGV Women's Golf Tournament last month. Ladies from all over the country enjoyed your club. Capital projects continue with the Board approving a renovation of the pool house. If you remember from the survey, the pool house was the number one (by far) capital project that the members wanted tackled next. We are too close to opening season to begin, so they won’t begin demolition and construction until late October, but that will give us plenty of time to organize the remodel. As we progress, I will post renderings and updates. As other area country clubs struggle, MCC continues to thrive thanks to an active, passionate membership, hard-working staff, and a forward-thinking Board. It’s such an exciting time to be a member of MCC.

I look forward to seeing you around your club, and be safe,

Jeff

Sending our deepest condolences to The Clark & Kelly Families

Golf at MCC Let’s first start with some recognition…. Congratulations, Ron Kilby!!! Ron has captured the crown in the “Life Begins at 40” Golf Tournament last month, which is held yearly at HCC. Ron has now won the annual event TWELVE times. This reign of terror began in 1997.

He followed that win with a three-peat from 1999 to 2001. He took a few breaks between wins in 2004 and 2008. Ron decided to remind everyone his reign wasn’t over with another three-peat from 2014-2017. His back began to act up and took a year off, but won again in 2019. And wouldn’t you know it, 2022. Great playing Ron!! McAllen CC had a few members down in Harlingen competing in the event as well. Dan MacDonald and Kenny Hartley were both victorious in their respective consolation brackets. Art Diaz was able to make it to the semi-finals in the 1st Flight. Arnold Curiel was able to make it to the quarter finals in the Championship Flight. Other members that competed include: Chris Wicker 2018 Champion, LD Clopton 2011 & 2013 Champion, Richard Wilson, Santiago Larrea and Miguel Del Angel Sr. Thank you all for representing the club. For a more detailed breakdown of the tournament, visit the website at https://www.lba40golf.com/main-draw. McAllen Country Club hosted the UTRGV Women’s Championship on March 6th – 8th. Prior to the college tournament, McAllen Country Club holds a College-AM fundraiser for the UTRGV women’s program. The College-AM tournament was able to raise $5,670. The team of Henry Temkin, Greg Turley, Tony Trad Jr. and Manuel Gomez were victorious in the College-AM. The team of Adam Caldwell, Jason King, Art Diaz and Sean Donnelly finished in second place. The team of Mike and Brittany Gabrielson, Abbey Ater and Libby Garza finished in third. Thank you to all the players and sponsors of this year’s College-AM: McAllen Country Club, La Quinta, El Pato, Texas Regional Bank, Susie and David Oliveira, Molly & Jeff Grossman, Laco Flores Jr. & Family, Arturo Perez & Family, Judge Sergio Valdez, South Texas Commercial Real Estate, Dr. Ross Chapel, Mike & Brittany Gabrielson, Abbey Ater, Marianne and David Seal, Killers Golf, the Law Offices of Brandy Wingate-Voss, KRGV, Noe Medina and Talent Solutions Group. The college tournament had a great field which included Stephen F Austin University, Houston Baptist University, TAMU Corpus Christi, TAMU Kingsville, University of Incarnate Word, Creighton University, University of Nebraska-Omaha, Texas Southern, Drake University, Tarleton State, Illinois State University, Utah Valley University, Lamar University, University of North Dakota and University of Illinois-Chicago. Though our local team, UTRGV played very well in the first round, they didn’t fair as well at the end, maybe next year.

Mike
