MCALLEN COUNTRY CLUB
AUGUST 2022
Dear MCC Members, I've received so many good responses to the dress code letter sent last month. Everyone I’ve spoken to truly appreciates the objective, and the feedback is very positive. Please keep these rules, and rules in general in mind, after all, MCC is the premier country club in South Texas. Thank you all for making it easy for the staff to do their jobs. Also, I would like to address the Kid’s Golf Camp. We had a blunder with age requirements, and I overreacted, but rules are rules. I have spoken to the golf pro, and Mike will have a plan moving forward. I sincerely want to apologize to our young golfers and their parents for canceling late last month. Mike and I will revisit and continue making for a great kid’s camp. As I mentioned last month, we will be resealing the parking lot this month. As usual, it is a (very) necessary inconvenience. I’m still working on dates, typically a Sunday afternoon through Tuesday; it will be well worth the inconvenience. Also, we’ve been working on Family Bingo Night at the club. I’m told we used to hold Bingo Night years ago at the old clubhouse. We want to make it fun, but we also need to obtain clearance from TABC to move forward. Since I plan to award prizes, any hint of gambling, which includes Bingo, must be treated cautiously. Chef and Veronica have been working hard on planning; I may even have a special guest caller that night. My plan is late September, contingent on several factors, but I’m confident that we will move forward with our plans. Lastly, by popular demand, we will once again begin the lunch buffet from 11 - 2pm, starting Friday, September 2nd in the Oak Room. We will start with only Fridays (Sunday Brunch continues), and depending on how well it is supported, we plan to expand to more days. Chef will have more details as we get closer. Roost and Hickory kitchen remain open. It’s so nice to see things getting back to relative normalcy. Please be safe whether on the golf course, tennis courts, or anywhere outside and stay hydrated. I look forward to seeing you around your club, and be safe,
Jeff

N I N G I D School’s back! That means getting into the routine of early morning drop offs and after school activities. Whether you take care of children or not, the last thing you want on your mind is dinner after a long day. Come in and allow us to make the day easier at your home away from home. For me one of the best memories of home was the smell of freshly made bread. If you’ve never experienced it, then let us show you what it’s like. We are making freshly baked Hokkaido Milk Bread daily for dinner along with new desserts. Also, August is the start of apple season which means Irish Apple Cake is on the menu. Apples, among other produce, are available year-round due to the globalized agricultural system. But the tradeoffs often mean fruits and vegetables can’t represent their true potential. So, nothing is quite like in-season apples grown domestically harvested at their peak for us to use. Nature has done all the work; all we did was bake it into a cake, topped it with strudel, and gave you the option to drizzle warm Crème Anglaise, which I highly recommend. It’s a great way to calm a crazy day or the perfect ending to a memorable night. Lastly, did you know the original apple was no bigger than a large lime also very sour?

Golf at MCC Golfing membership, Would you believe me if I said, Dr. Salvador Mendez made another hole-in-one? He did!! Doc aced the 8th hole on July 9th. It was witnessed by Dr. Salil Mangi and Dr. JJ Saenz. Congratulations Sal. That’s his second ace following his first ace on #2 in June. At this rate, we can expect him to ace hole #13 in August and #15 in September. Summer heat is here. The most beautiful thing about your golf course is the trees. Trees provide 20-40 degrees cooler temperature than the unshaded areas. When you are playing, find some shade, drink some water and even use a cool towel. There are three areas on the golf course (hole #1, 6, and 14) where we have cold wet towels. Wrap it around your neck, wipe your face, and put it on your head. The Working Man’s Weekend is our next golf tournament. The event is set to be contested on September 17th and 18th. The tournament is limited to the first 36 teams. Teams will be broken down into 6 different flights. The event is a round-robin style tournament. Teams will get to play a nine hole match against every team in their flight. There will be three nine-hole matches on Saturday and two nine-hole matches on Sunday. After completing the round robin matches, winners from each flight will advance to shootout to determine an overall winner. Following the Working Man’s Weekend is the Two Man Championship and the Two Woman Championship. This event utilizes the Quota system, similar to the Member-Guest. Each player/team begins with a quota. Their job is to better their quota. A quota is 38 points minus their handicap. Ex. 38 points minus my 10 hcp; my quota is 28 points. Players will play out each hole. Points are given based on what they made on the hole. Ex. birdie – 4 points. They will total up all their points and subtract that from the starting quota. The best part of this format is the first day will be select drive – quota. There will be a drive requirement per player but it is always nice to have a go off the tee when your partner is in the fairway. Sign up today.
Hope to see you on the course,

TENNIS at MCC Dear MCC Members: MCC will host a Professional Men’s USTA Futures event here on our courts in October 2022. It will be a great event for adults and kids to see future tennis stars. If anyone is interested in sponsorship for the Professional Tournament, please contact the Tennis Shop for more information.
Thank you, Parents and Campers, for supporting the Tennis Camp this Summer! The campers were excited and eager to return to the courts. The youth were encouraged daily to improve their tennis game. The athletes enjoyed personalized instruction on technique, the importance of court awareness and rules of the tennis game. They put their skills to the test by taking part in match play scenarios and fun contests to test their skill level and improvement. The Tennis Camp was a success! We hope that it was both rewarding and enjoyable. We look forward to seeing all of you next Summer! Have a great school year! Also, our After School Youth Tennis Clinics will be starting in September. If you have any questions concerning our programs, lessons, or the ball machine, please feel free to call our Tennis Pro Shop at 956-682-3459.
See you all on the courts,
Rudi
