McAllen Country Club November 2018 Newsletter Est. 1946

Letter from the GM Dear MCC Members, It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Chef Stan and Socorro. They will be leaving the Club at the end of October for new opportunities. We certainly wish them well. I don’t know what I’ll do without Socorro's fresh home-made salsa that she brings me, or Stan’s daily buffet. They will be missed. As the weather gets cooler, we will now be opening the patio for dinner service on Friday and Saturday evenings. Starting November 2nd, the Hickory Room and Patio will be open for casual, al fresco dining from 5-9pm. Make plans to join us, and keep in mind that a reservation sure makes it easier for us to staff accordingly.

As the holiday season approaches, I would like to remind everyone that we will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for area children with Toys for Tots. You will soon be seeing the boxes throughout the clubhouse. Please remember the less fortunate this Christmas season. Thank you to all who attended the 1st Annual President’s Ball. Everyone had a blast! We look forward to doing it again next year. Lastly, I want to inform everyone that the Board approved a charge of $20++ per person for the Member Holiday Party set for Wednesday, December 5th from 6-8pm. The $20++ will include the hors d’oeurves and open bar. Also, we will not be taking reservations for seating, but RSVP so we know how many people to expect. As always, when you are going out for dinner, lunch, or just drinks, consider putting your club at the top of your list. Where else can you get good food, great service, a table with a beautiful view, no waiting to be seated, and a room lively with friends and family? MCC is where. P.S. In conjunction with the season, the Club will again be soliciting the membership for the Employee Holiday Bonus. You will see the $35 charge to your account on your November statement. On behalf of myself and the staff, thank you so much for allowing us to serve such a wonderful membership year-round. -Jeff

Employee Christmas Bonus

November 5th — December 10th The McAllen Country Club will have cardboard boxes throughout the club so they can be filled with new, unwrapped toys for local children to make their holiday season more cheerful! We encourage you to bring unwrapped gifts today!

The Club will be collecting for the Annual Employee Christmas Bonus this month. Please know that your donation is not nor ever will be mandatory. On behalf of all the employees who serve you year-round - Thank You

Membership Dear MCC Members, It’s that time of the year where there are plenty of Holiday parties going on, with mingling of friends and family. I have a great idea for a Christmas gift, consider the gift of a MCC membership - Legacy Memberships are very affordable. Also, if you have some friends that are currently not members, speak to them about possibly joining your club. A membership at McAllen Country Club has many benefits that all ages can enjoy. When you have a friend that is interested in joining, make sure to give me a call or send an email to let me know; you will receive $250 food and beverage credit once they are approved for membership. In September, the Common Member Stockholders passed the new by-law update which included a redesigned Corporate Membership. If you have a business or know of a friend who does, they can now get a Corporate Membership for a discounted price. Although the membership is only for the applicant, spouse and children under 25, they can still bring guests to use the amenities. Please see below for more information, or call me at 956-631-1103 for further details. -Brittanie

Catering Corner Dear Members, Smiling faces, laughing parents, and The Gladys Porter Zoo was the perfect combination for the Fall Festival. Thank you to each and every one who participated. It was a sold-out event and we can’t wait until next year! I will also like to thank Brittanie, Bob, and Patrick for all their hard work in making this event so special. Annie Miller and Benton Beckwith deserves a BIG SHOUT OUT as well! Our next children’s event is schedule for Thursday, November 29th. We will be kicking off December with Magical Christmas with Santa. Once again, reservations will be extremely important, we hope this event will be taking the entire North End of the Club. This event will replace Santa’s Brunch. If planning that special event for the Holidays, give me a call and I can help! Lastly, I would like to wish Chef Stan and Socorro the very best, as the embark on a new chapter in their lives as they head to Houston! We will miss them tremendous and cherish their friendship and memories! -Kaylynn

Wines of the Month Ramsey - Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Medium-bodied with the aromas of perfectly ripe, mahogany-colored bing cherries. These aromas are followed by dark fruits on the palate, fine tannins and excellent acidity combine to form a complex but well-balanced whole.

Geyser Peak - Sauvignon Blanc 2015

The fresh style of Sauvignon Blanc for which Geyser Peak is famous, abundant fruit flavors, with bright and crisp acidity. Geyser Peak aimed to capture the best of Sauvignon Blanc's identity by blending grassier elements with citrus and mineral notes and passion fruit and melon flavor. As such, this Sauvignon Blanc offers authentic varietal character that can be appreciated by both the novice and the connoisseur.

Fitness at MCC Dear MCC Members, First, I would like to welcome our new trainer, Nelda Perales to our MCC Fitness Staff, please stop by and say hello when you get a chance. Below is a brief bio about her. Let’s make things interesting and challenging! This year the MCC Fitness Staff is conducting a holiday competition called “Lose a Turkey”. Festive parties and holiday treats can add up to a lot of fun and a lot of extra pounds (average holiday weight gain is six to eight pounds). This program will help you become more active and eat healthy, so you can maintain or lose weight instead of packing on holiday pounds. How does it work?

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, your goal is to lose weight above your initial start weight. To maximize weight control, pay attention to the foods you choose - make smart decisions and go easy on the holiday treats. This is the perfect time to increase your fruit and vegetable intake to at least five servings a day. How to get started? Stop by the Fitness Center and complete the registration form by noon November 21st - deadline and program materials will be provided to you. You will need to weigh in before Thanksgiving and again before January 7th using our scale. For more information, or to sign up for the program, please feel free to call or stop by the Fitness Center. We look forward to helping you “Lose a Turkey” this holiday season. In good health, -Michael Puig

Tennis at MCC Dear MCC Members, As the temperatures begins to drop we look forward to seeing you play competitive tennis, and hope that more of your leisure time will be spent at our tennis facility. The courts are filling up rather quickly with league matches and members reserving courts for a great workout. We encourage you to invite a few guests, enjoy some time on the courts all while working up an appetite for your turkey feast. I want to welcome all new members to our MCC Tennis Pro Shop and courts. Please come by and visit with us so we can get you excited, introduced and involved about the game of tennis, which is a sport for a lifetime. The staff and I look forward to the opportunity to be able to work with each person interested in learning the game of tennis. Our MCC Women’s Tennis League on Tuesday mornings and Thursday nights has restarted again, with all the ladies having a blast on the courts. If any ladies are interested in playing in the league they must register and pay in the pro shop before they play . The fee for is $30 for Members and $50 for Non-Members. Ladies and Gents grab your doubles partner and call the pro shop to sign up for our new upcoming tournament, Member-Member Ladies and Men’s Doubles on Saturday and Sunday, November 17 & 18, 2018. Entry deadline for the Member-Member tournament is Tuesday, November 13th. Please let us know your shirt size when you call the pro shop to register. Our Breast Cancer Awareness tournament was another success. The ladies enjoyed themselves tremendously. The tournament was competitive and challenging with 5 rounds of round robin play. At the end of five rounds, two teams were tied at 26 points each, therefore a 7 point tie-breaker was played to determine the winner. Congratulations to the team of Elda Zendejas and Molly Grossman for winning the tournament against Barbara O’Riley and Mercedes Savinon, with a score of 7-4. Thank you to all the Ladies that played the tournament and donated to the cause. Hope to see you and many others playing next year. -Rudi

Golf at MCC Dear MCC Members, I can’t thank everyone enough for participating in the Rally for the Cure. The tournament was able to raise $300. David and Marianne Seal won the event with a score of 70. Placing second was the team of Charles and Keesha Zey. Thank you again to everyone who came out to play. Unfortunately, I was unable to be here for the Rally for the Cure. I was in Orlando, FL attending the biennial World Golf Fitness Summit. This event is three days filled with leaders in golf performance discussing their latest research and its practical applications. This year’s theme was Yards and Years. A quick list of some of the presenters included Dr. Greg Rose, Dr. Marcus Elliott, Dr. Mark Smith, Dr. Bhrett McCabe, Dr. Gary Cook, Dana Santas and Jason Glass. I loved every minute. A few bullet points from the event: 1. We all have roughly five sleep cycles (lasting 90 minutes each) about 7.5 hours of sleep. You can do 3 – 4 cycles as long as you makeup one cycle later on. Which means, NAPS ARE OK!! LOL. 2. Best athletes get 10 hours of sleep a night. 3. The brain DOES understand “don’t”. I often hear – “Don’t hit it left.” The brain does not understand the conflict, so it focuses on it. 4. Failure drills need to be incorporated into practice. 5. Symptoms make it hard, systems make it easy. Ask a better question to filter out the information. 6. Don’t chase the pain; look for the movement problems. If it isn’t an issue with movement, it’s a pain problem. 7. Hips should externally rotate when we breath. Move your ribs, not your gut. -Mike
