Yates Community Center, 3260 Davenport St.

Tucked inside the Gifford Park neighborhood on 32nd and Davenport streets is the Yates Community Center. The 30,000-square-foot structure is more than a century old and offers classrooms, multipurpose spaces, a commercial kitchen and an auditorium with a stage. Yates has direct access to crosstown thoroughfares on Dodge and 30th streets, as well as to the interstate. It’s close to the Omaha Public Schools Teacher Administration Center, Duchesne Academy, Creighton University, health care facilities, social service agencies and North Downtown. OTHER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Career Advancement

Career coaching provides participants the opportunity to meet with a career coach to start, continue or navigate their education to a successful employment journey. Career coaching uses an individualized approach to focus on goal-setting; intention touch points; and assessments, tools and resources to help individuals find, fuel and pursue training opportunities to reach their employment goals.

MCC Integrated Education and Training provides workplace and college readiness skills so participants can transition from school into livable-wage jobs more seamlessly and quickly. The MCC Career Placement program prepares people for job success through a workforce preparation training series. After program participants complete the career placement program, they are offered interviews with area businesses. The College’s focus is to ensure individuals receive training and support to enter into a high-skill, -demand and -wage job.

The program has been a resounding success: 85% who complete the MCC Career Placement Program receive jobs at an average wage of $25.83 an hour with a plan for advanced training opportunities.

ADULT EDUCATION INCREASE YOUR SKILLS.

MCC Adult Education offers noncredit instruction to students in the Omaha metro area who are seeking to develop their basic skills, earn a GED or increase their literacy as a non-English speaker. For more information, visit mccneb.edu/AdultEducation.

GED (GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT)

MCC Adult Education is sponsored jointly by the Nebraska State Department of Education and the College. This program is for adults 18 years of age or older; however, those who are at least 16 years of age and are not enrolled in a regular high school program may enroll with special permission from the Nebraska State Department of Education. This program offers students the opportunity to develop basic reading, writing and math skills. There are no fees for GED classes.

This program also consists of GED preparation classes that prepare adults for the General Education Development examination, a nationally standardized test of high school equivalency. There is an application fee for the high school diploma and a testing fee. The high school diploma is issued by the Nebraska Department of Education upon successful completion of the examination.

The GED examination consists of the following four timed tests:

• Reasoning through language arts (150 minutes)

• Social studies (90 minutes)

• Science (90 minutes)

• Mathematical reasoning (115 minutes)

GED classes are offered at locations throughout the Omaha metro area. Two program pathways for GED are available — enrollment-based and open learning classes.

The enrollment-based classes require students to:

• Attend an Adult Education information session.

• Take an introductory three-week course (the Transitional Learning Community).

• Complete Nebraska Department of Education paperwork.

• Complete an interview.

• Complete computer literacy education components.

• Take periodic CASAS testing.

• Attend class daily.

This program should be considered by students who have the highest level of commitment in terms of time, dedication and discipline.

MCC Adult Education also offers open learning opportunities for students who need more learning flexibility and who are not currently able to adhere to strict requirements of attendance and periodic testing found in the enrollment-based classes. Opportunities in this pathway include:

• Open enrollment classes so students may attend and participate as their schedules permit

• Self-paced GED prep classes

• No requirements for attendance or testing

MCC is authorized by GED Testing Service to provide official GED testing. Additional information regarding MCC Adult Education and GED classes can be obtained by calling the Adult Education office at 531-622-4060.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM

Learn English for FREE with quality instructors. The College’s English as a Second Language program offers noncredit learning options for students who need to develop English language proficiency. These classes provide a sequenced program of instruction. ESL classes are offered at locations throughout the Omaha metropolitan area. ESL class participant requirements:

• 18 years of age or older

• Nebraska resident (you do not have to be a U.S. citizen)

• Attend an information meeting

• Attend a two-week introductory class

• Attend class regularly

Students who enter the ESL program are required to complete assessment testing to determine appropriate placement into the sequence of courses. To register for assessment testing, contact Student Services at 531-622-2400.

Additional information concerning noncredit ESL instruction can be obtained by calling the Adult Education office at 531-622-4060. Information about credit ESL courses can be obtained from any MCC Student Services office or the Office of the Dean of Academic Success at 531-622-2387.

OTHER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

We provide computer classes for students wanting to improve their computer skills and conversational English classes for students who cannot attend a class regularly. Contact the MCC South Express office at 531-622-4060 or adultedu@mccneb.edu to register for classes.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT

GAP

The Community College Gap Assistance Program provides need-based tuition assistance for approved short-term credit and noncredit training programs that are in high-need fields to eligible Nebraska residents. Gap assistance may be right for you if you are unemployed, underemployed or are looking to upskill for career advancement.

WHAT DOES GAP COVER?

You may be eligible for partial or total assistance for tuition, books, fees and equipment.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION?

By applying for and accepting Gap funding you are agreeing to:

1. Maintain regular contact with instructors, career coaches and program staff.

2. Sign any necessary releases to provide relevant information to College staff, if applicable.

3. Discuss with College staff any issues that may affect your ability to complete the program and obtain or maintain full-time employment.

4. Attend all courses regularly. If you will be absent, communicate with College staff and make arrangements to complete work outside of class time.

5. Meet with College staff to develop a job-search plan.

6. Complete surveying when requested by College staff.

HOW DO I APPLY?

1. Sign up to attend a Gap training informational session at www.bit.ly/CWEWorkforceInfo.

2. Schedule to take and complete the National Career Readiness Certificate assessment.

3. Research and select your desired program.

4. Complete your Gap application and send it to gap@mccneb.edu.

5. Collect your verification documents that will be needed during your interview:

• State-issued photo ID or driver’s license

• Most recent paycheck stubs for self and spouse, if applicable

• Verification of other sources of income

• Most recent year’s tax return

• Green card, if applicable

• Résumé, if available

SNAP EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING

MCC is proud to collaborate with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Labor to empower individuals seeking better employment opportunities and better lives by offering the SNAP Next Step Employment and Training Program. SNAP E&T provides SNAP recipients who are unemployed or underemployed the opportunity to complete education and training programs that will lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career with increased earning potential. CAREER SKILLS AND ADVANCEMENT

The MCC Career Skills and Advancement program is for adults 18 years of age or older seeking to upskill, reskill or enter the workforce through short-term, industry-recognized training. This program provides tools and resources to participants to enter and maintain employment in high-demand, -wage and -skill industry areas. Participants enroll in a career placement program while simultaneously enrolled in technical training. Participants will receive the following tools and resources:

• Increased workplace skills and certifications

• Career coaching and referrals to agencies (when/as needed)

• Direct introductions to hiring businesses

Basket Weaving: Christmas Cheer

This charming beginner basket is perfect for displaying holiday cards or a nice arrangement of greenery and pine cones. A seasonal embellishment will be added after weaving is complete. PROTOYPE DESIGN LAB MEMBERSHIP

Whether you are an entrepreneur, engineer, designer or inventor, MCC offers an open-access, cutting-edge facility that allows you to visualize, develop and create just about anything you can imagine. Located in the Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology on the Fort Omaha Campus, the Prototype Design Lab is a 9,600-square-foot facility with a wide variety of fabrication equipment, including a fully stocked wood and metal shop. Technicians are available to help you get started with all aspects of your projects, including design, file generation and machine operation. Participants are required to take a short safety course before using equipment, but once completed, they have full access to all software and equipment. Free equipment training is offered to all participants. Open lab hours may vary depending on MCC closures. Currently, the lab is open Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The lab is closed on holidays.

Tour the Glore Psychiatric Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri, and learn about the 130-year history of the state hospital and centuries of rather bizarre mental health treatments. In Atchison, Kansas, proclaimed to be the most haunted town in the state, a step-on guide will focus on the paranormal, involving buildings and mansions, including the famous Waggener House (as legend has it, the owner made a pact with the devil) and the Sallie House, which has earned a national reputation as one of the most haunted places in the U.S. A special cemetery walking tour is included. CWE provides learning opportunities for people in all stages of the employment cycle, whether they are just entering the workforce or advancing their careers. Our vision is to become the community’s first choice in innovative workforce training, providing solutions for a strong workforce and economy. We deliver industry-recognized, competency-based training and workshops where students gain industry certification, digital badging and prelicensing. With access to state-of-the-art facilities and corporate training spaces, CWE students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology and advanced design and prototyping techniques.

MCC Corporate Workforce Training is a part of the CWE division and provides a variety of short-term credentials, national certificates and micro-credential programs to provide individuals and employers with the knowledge and skills to perform their jobs. Courses may focus on onboarding and training new hires, upskilling or reskilling current employees or customized training specific to a particular topic. *CompTIA A+ Mentored Learning

This program focuses on the CompTIA A+, a professional certification that validates core skills and abilities in areas such as cybersecurity; data backup, recovery and storage; device configuration; networking; operating systems; technical support; and troubleshooting. Education is delivered over 14 weeks with weekly online labs, assessments, live tutoring sessions and instructor-led workshops. Upon successful completion of the course, participants are prepared to complete the CompTIA A+ certification exam. This course is offered at no cost to eligible grant participants and free to those who qualify, which may require additional pretraining before the class start date.

The Metropolitan Community College Code School is a part-time, performance-based program where students learn in-demand web development skills. The program curriculum was developed with and informed by industry experts and Omaha-area employers. All MCC Code School students are required to complete an application and the Smarter Measure assessment. Direct admittance to Tier 2 and Tier 3 courses also requires a skills assessment and interview. The application process will be used to determine a recommendation for enrollment into one of four MCC Code School pathways. Pathways include Introduction to Web Development, Front-End Web Development, Back-End Web Development and Full-Stack Web Development. Visit mccneb.edu/CodeSchool for more information or to register.

Mobile Device Repair

Academy $

MCC offers the first mobile device repair certification program in postsecondary education through an industry partnership program with CTIA Certification and iFixOmaha. The academy is a credentialing program that includes a one-week boot camp and an eight-week internship. Participants may earn two Wireless Industry Service Excellence (WISE) certifications upon successful completion of the boot camp. About 50 million mobile device screens are damaged each year, and this noncredit program provides an at-cost device repair resource to the greater Omaha community. *Mental Health Technician $

Mental illness can affect anyone, and the consequences of ignoring the symptoms of depression, anxiety and other disorders can be devastating. Mental health technicians help people struggling with a wide variety of illnesses, and considering the sensitive nature of their work, they have to be well-versed in developmental psychology. This 366-hour program prepares learners to take the Mental Health Technician Certification exam through the American Medical Certification Association. (12-month access)

*Nebraska Insurance Pre-License Training: Property and Casualty $

Participants gain an introduction to the field of property and casualty insurance to successfully prepare for the Nebraska Property and Casualty Insurance Producer license exam. Fort Omaha Campus, Building 24, 5300 N. 30th St.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT ACADEMY

The MCC Project Management Academy is a comprehensive program suitable for all backgrounds and experience levels in project management. The program infuses a diverse curriculum of project management principles, real-world application and project simulations that integrate many of the concepts and best practices learned in the foundation of the program. Upon successful demonstration of project management knowledge and skills through project activities, students receive an MCC Project Management Academy Certificate and are prepared to obtain a globally recognized certification in project management through the Project Management Institute. FIBER OPTICS TRAINING

The MCC Fiber Optic Technician program is an accelerated professional training program that leads to industry-recognized certifications through the Fiber Optics Association (FOA). MCC classes are 85% hands-on instruction. Participants apply industry standards aligned with ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 International Standard for Certifying Bodies. FOA certification exams are included with tuition and administered on site at the end of each class. Our next session for this program starts December 4. LOGISTICS AND INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION

This academy allows students to gain the upper hand when applying for positions in transportation and industrial logistics. Learn from certified OSHA trainers and gain hands-on experience in safety, measurement, forklift and logistics. Successful completion in these courses will provide you with the opportunity to find employment in manufacturing, supply chain and other industries while being able to improve safety standards and customer service in the workplace. Payment

Payment is due at the time of registration.

Refunds

An automatic refund is made if MCC cancels a class. To withdraw your registration before a class starts, please call 531-MCC-5231. Refunds will be issued to students who drop a class at least one business day (14 days for tours) prior to the class start date. No refunds will be issued for classes dropped on or after the class start date. Refunds for international travel experiences vary. Specific terms and conditions will be listed on the travel packet for that international experience.

Liability

MCC assumes no liability for accidents that occur while participating in Community and Workforce Education classes and provides no funds to cover medical costs. Participants are reminded that participation is entirely voluntary and are strongly urged to have their own health insurance. It is understood that participation is voluntary and MCC is not responsible for injuries or accidents and all liability against the College is waived.
