The Numbers Game BOY, THOSE WEATHER FORECASTERS

that predicted another mild winter for the Carolinas were totally wrong in their proclamations. Needless to say, by the time this magazine goes to print, we will be well on our way to spring and nicer weather. Until then, I’ll toss another log on the fire and practice my putting on the carpet at home. The golf course renovation at Providence Country Club is well underway, and I know members will be excited with the improvements, including new greens available for play early fall. During construction, we expect many Providence members will be visiting our other properties to golf. That’s one great advantage of our membership, as these out-of-town rounds are included in monthly dues. Golf rounds at our properties greatly exceeded the national averages in 2017. In the United States, rounds increased by less than one percent — while McConnell Golf rounds increased by nine percent! This is impressive for our clubs, as we are bringing new people to the game with our focus on juniors and golf clinics. Those teaching clinics begin in early spring, so plan on participating and learning new skills. I often wonder whether we can manage a club better under our corporate structure or whether the boards that govern most private clubs are the superior model. In looking at our operating statistics, the overall revenue growth

under McConnell Golf ownership has been 13 percent, with Raleigh Country Club leading the group with a 54 percent increase, followed by Sedgefield Country Club at 28 percent. What is truly impressive is that golf revenue at all properties has an overall average increase of 30 percent! Perhaps there is a valid reason that the word “golf” is part of our business name. One of the key metrics in all businesses — and especially private country clubs — is the yearly member retention plan. In our industry, clubs have an average membership loss of 10 percent each year. Attracting new members is certainly an important mission for all facilities. Our retention rate for 2017 was 92 percent, so once again, we did better than the national results. Leading the way for our clubs was Sedgefield Country Club with a retention rate of 95 percent — truly outstanding. As you can appreciate, the need for capital improvements in our clubs is a never-ending challenge. In 2017, McConnell Golf invested $3.5 million in new equipment, club additions, and repairs. Most notable among the changes was the new fitness center at Providence and the Holston Hills Country Club clubhouse renovations. In 2018, we plan on investing almost $5 million in upgrades, highlighted by the course renovation in Charlotte (turn to p. 24 to read more). But enough about numbers. We’re

fast approaching one of my favorite sights of the year — seeing the robins flying around in my backyard, signaling spring’s arrival. Another great sight? Seeing Tiger Woods back on tour as he tries to regain his golf game and compete for championships. I might have pulled for others to beat him in the past when he dominated the sport, but now I want that guy to win again. He can grow this great game more than any initiative we might try to attract new players. Go, Tiger, go!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT By Brad King

Donald Clement, director of golf and club manager at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island

Player, Teacher, and Personality The Reserve’s Donald Clement delivers on all three. BRIAN KITTLER, VICE PRESIDENT OF GOLF OPERATIONS, saves some of his highest praise for Donald Clement, long-time director of golf at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. “We have a lot of good employees, but Clement epitomizes what McConnell Golf is all about,” says Kittler. “Whatever needs to be done, he does it. And he does it with a smile on his face. Everyone who goes down to The Reserve, they talk about ‘DC’ and how great the staff is. We’re just glad to have him on our team.” Kittler says Clement personifies what he wants from all McConnell Golf professionals: That they be “a PTPer, like Dick Vitale,” he says: “Player, Teacher, and Personality.” One of the Carolinas’ top players for many years, Clement is a member of the Sports Hall of Fame at his high school and his college, Coastal Carolina, where he led the Chanticleers to a third-place NAIA finish in 1985, earning first team NAIA All-American honors in the process. That same year, he qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and made it to the match-play portion of the national championship. “I had never played in a match-play event in my life,” recalls Clement. “I had a guy from Hawaii four down with five to play — and he beat me on 18. Welcome to match play. I was already playing my second match. In my mind he was done … but in the end, I was done.” During the 1990s, Clement coached the men’s and women’s team at Coastal Carolina until his college teammate and roommate, Ronald Crow, enticed him in 1997 to come to The Reserve, where Crow was — and remains — the golf course superintendent. Before he left Coastal Carolina, however, Clement began recruiting the player who would turn out to be the greatest in school history — current world No. 1 Dustin Johnson. As a result of his relationship with Clement, Johnson was a member at The Reserve for several years after he left school. Clement was playing with Johnson the day he hit a driver, 6-iron to 15 feet on The Reserve’s 600-yard finishing hole, made eagle, and set the course record 65 — a mark that still stands today. Approaching the start of his third decade at The Reserve, Clement has always given back to the game and his profession. He has served on the Carolinas PGA Board several times and is now in his fifth year serving as the CPGA Area Seven director. “I’m just trying to give something back to a section that has been good to me,” says Clement. “My job is totally hands on. I try to lead by example. I’m here … and just being here is one of the biggest parts of being a successful club professional. Your membership wants to see you.”

Sportsmen through the ages

Not every sport loves you back throughout your life, but golf — as it often does — proves to be the exception. From Juniors first developing their skills to the fine-tuning and frustrations of adulthood and on into the golden years, our clubs teem with enthusiasts of all ages. We’re pleased to bring you a few inspiring stories from later in life — those whose passion for the game has rewarded them the milestone of shooting their age.

Charles Douglass, Musgrove Mill Golf Club Clinton, South Carolina

At a course where time seems to slow and tensions ease, Musgrove Mill has served as a needed escape for McConnell Golf members since it joined the portfolio in 2007. As visitors know, the atmosphere is relaxed but the course is no less of a challenge. It’s here that Douglass has kept his game in tip-top shape for over 20 years. How did it feel the first time you shot your age? I don’t remember the first time I shot my age, however I am sure it was very satisfying. Last summer, I did manage to post an 81 and 84 at Green Valley CC when I was 86. Share with us a little about your time at Musgrove Mill. I have been a member at Musgrove for about 25 years and enjoy playing there very much. Since McConnell Golf acquired the course, I have enjoyed the privilege of playing many of the McConnell courses. What’s the next goal or milestone for you? I have not been able to match my age at Musgrove (it does have a higher slope), but who knows, maybe one day. As the motto of South Carolina reads, “While I breathe, I hope.”

14 McConnell Golf THE MAGAZINE

Charles Douglass

Ken Reed, Holston Hills Country Club Knoxville, Tennessee

Shooting your age just one time is quite a feat. And doing it again? Incredible! So how do you describe someone who has shot their age 363 times? (That’s not a typo!) A member at Holston Hills for 47 years, Reed shot most of these scores on its Donald Ross track. He also has seven aces to his name — so far. How did it feel the first time you shot your age? I was sure it was something unique because I’d been trying for some time. I was getting close in May of 2005 and my birthday is in August. I saved that card and still have it. I’ve saved nearly all of them.

Ken Reed

What keeps you playing, even after tough days on the course? Simply my love of the game keeps me playing, and being outside with friends is always enjoyable. At my age it’s a little more difficult, but I’ve managed to do it since I turned 87 last fall. What advice do you have for aspiring age-shooters? Practice and improve your short game!

Gene Keady, Grande Dunes Members Club Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

As one of the most respected coaches in college basketball, former Purdue coach Gene Keady is no stranger to competition — and winning. He spent 25 years as Purdue’s head coach, and with six Big Ten championships under his belt and more than 800 career wins, he’s now focusing on his golf game. How did it feel the first time you shot your age? Do you remember where you were and who you were with? I first shot my age this past fall at Grande Dunes, which was an 81. It had been a goal of mine the entire year. I was playing with good friends, Jim Beach and Jim Ranney, who helped coach me through the final few holes knowing I was close. What keeps you playing, even after tough days on the course? I really just love playing golf. I especially enjoy the camaraderie of being around all my buddies. I always make it a goal to try and make birdies to keep me going. What advice do you have for aspiring age-shooters? I don’t have any particular advice other than to make certain you are having fun. If you have the time and the energy, then shooting your age hopefully will take care of itself.

FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN By Martha-Page Althaus

The CCA team at work in the Steadfast House kitchen.

Comfort Food

Country Club of Asheville provided warm meals this winter. THERE’S STRENGTH IN NUMBERS FOR MCCONNELL Golf’s Footprints on the Green program. For a successful outreach, both members and staff come together to support local communities, and that’s exactly what happened last fall in Asheville, when members and staff joined forces for their first Footprints effort. CCA sent nine volunteers to participate in a meal-prep initiative at ABCCM Steadfast House, a shelter for women and children that provides stability, education, and job training. Debbie Ponder, the club’s membership and marketing director, was part of the group that spent the day in the kitchen at Steadfast House assembling more than a dozen freezer-ready chicken and rice casseroles. Residents at Steadfast House enjoyed the meals throughout the winter. “After we finished prepping the casseroles, we had

a Q&A with Steadfast House staff,” says Ponder. “We’re hoping to establish a meaningful relationship between the club and Steadfast. We’re located so close to each other, and we hope to be able to do more.” Member Gail Miller helped with the effort after reading about it in CCA’s newsletter. “We were spreading freezer pans all over the place and filling them up,” she says. “Big casserole dishes for the residents to pull out of the freezer all winter long.” For Miller, along with the rest of CCA’s volunteers, the day was about more than just prepping meals. “It was good exposure. I didn’t even know Steadfast House existed. As a group, we learned more about the community and what’s being offered to help.” “After that day, we all agreed — we need to do this more,” says Ponder.

Get Involved By Lauren Thedieck

Footprints on the Green is our desire — as members and staff — to make a difference in a thoughtful and committed way. Throughout our 12 properties, clubs organize events, activities, and donations that make an impact in the lives of those around us. Designed with all age groups in mind, this program serves as a learning tool for youth, a team-building activity for staff, and a networking platform to strengthen member connections. At each property, we have a staff member working behind the scenes to connect with the local community as well as engage with the membership to learn how we can support our member’s charity affiliations. Ranging from charity walks, sewing projects, food prep, and nature preservation programs, our dedicated staff needs your help to make the impact greater. ▼ MEET 10-YEAR-OLD CHASE DUNCAN. HE RECENTLY shot his first hole-in-one at TPC Wakefield Plantation, acing hole No. 7 while playing with his father. He is the youngest McConnell Golf member to do so at any property. “My Dad shot the yardage at 90 and he said maybe an 8 iron,” says Chase. “I said, ‘I think it’s a 9.’ I was right. When I saw it go in, we both yelled and were excited.”

18 McConnell Golf THE MAGAZINE

For his father, Jon Duncan, it was both a proud and humbling moment. “Anything that your child accomplishes that makes them truly excited is always a blessing to watch in person,” he says. “Then when they remind you that you have never accomplished that same thing, you realize that a 10-year-old is better at golf then you.” Chase and Dad Prior to his hole-in-one, Chase was named the 2017 Junior of the Year at WP. He started playing when he was four years old; now, he’s a strong member of the 2017 PGA Junior League squad. Last year, he won the Junior Club ChampiChase with WP Pro onship Nine & Under DiviRyan Vance sion with a solid round of 39, seven strokes better than his nearest competitor. This past summer, Chase teamed up with his Dad to post a stellar score of 37 and claim a Modified Pinehurst Parent-Child event at WP. Needless to say, the father-son duo have a lot of golf ahead of them. We’re certain there’s an ace out there for Dad in the future!

GOLF By Brad King

Growing Their Game For pros at McConnell Golf, a good scorecard is a job requirement. A FEW OF RYAN TYNDALL’S FELLOW GOLF PROFESSIONALS JOKINGLY said they wanted to buy him a photograph of the 17th and 18th holes at Wilmington’s Eagle Point Golf Club. Why? Because Tyndall, head golf professional at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C., never saw Eagle Point’s two finishing holes while coasting to victory at the OMEGA Carolinas PGA Match Play Championship last November. In fact, Tyndall didn’t even visit Eagle Point’s 16th hole until his final pairing of the Carolinas’ most prestigious match play event, where he lodged a 3&2 victory over Scooter Buhrman of Champion Hills Club. Playing in cool, wet conditions, the 33-year-old Tyndall rose from the No. 11 seed to claim the tournament’s $3,000 first prize. And bear in mind, these were no slouches Tyndall was besting. He posted 4&3 victories over a trio of the CPGA’s best players — Larry George of River Landing Country Club in the opening round, Oak Island Golf Club’s Steve Isley in the quarters, and Rock Creek Country Club’s Rick Morton in the semis — to reach the championship tilt. “It was awesome,” says Tyndall, who attended the University of Georgia and grew up competing against current PGA Tour pros including Brian Harman, Kevin Kisner, Russell Henley, Harris English, and Hudson Swafford. “There was no pressure because I was playing so well — I never made any mistakes. You can be very at ease when everything is going your way,” he recalls. Tyndall considers his playing performance to be an important element of his job with McConnell Golf. “Mr. McConnell and Brian Kittler look for good players,” Tyndall says. “For me, I enjoy playing, I love to compete. I try to play and support the CPGA section in every event possible. Whether it’s team events or sectional championships or even taking members to Pro-Ams, I think it’s important for us to make a showing.” Tyndall performed consistently well in the Carolinas PGA section events last year, claiming four top-20 finishes prior to his big win at Eagle Point, site of the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. In last year’s Carolinas Section race for the

lowest scoring average, Tyndall finished tied for ninth. Often, Tyndall says, McConnell Golf members reach out to him during the tournaments via text or social media to inquire how he’s playing and wish him good luck. “It gives the members something to talk about when we get home,” Tyndall says. “They enjoy asking how you’re playing and following you online, which is always fun. I think they take pride in seeing one of us — not just me but all McConnell Golf pros — play well and succeed.” Club members also enjoy knowing that their golf pro knows what they’re talking about — and that they have the opportunity to not only learn from good teachers, but accomplished golfers as well. “I believe the membership takes pride in having professionals who not only play good golf in tournaments and represent their club, but are also available to play with them on a weekly basis,” says Brian Kittler, vice president of golf operations. “You’re so much more valuable to your membership if you’re a good player,” says Donald Clement, The Reserve’s

director of golf, who ranked as one of the CPGA’s best players for many years. “The membership respects you because you’re a club professional. They take lessons from you. If you’re a good player, they understand that you can teach too. You understand the golf swing a little more if you’ve put your game on the line and posted some scores. Being a good player is a huge part of the job.”

Ahead of the Game

From the tennis courts to the kitchen, McConnell Golf employees from all disciplines actively work to improve themselves in order to enhance the overall member experience. In the next issue, we’ll spotlight two Agronomy leaders who go above and beyond to stay ahead of the curve and have received some of the highest forms of recognition in doing so. www.mcconnellgolf.com | Spring 2018

GOLF By Brad King

Adding Character to the Course A course renovation is underway in Charlotte.

The crowd in Providence Country Club’s Carolina Ballroom in early January was standing room only for a presentation of the upcoming golf course renovation by architect Kris Spence, projected to re-open this fall. THE WOW FACTOR McConnell Golf purchased Providence in early 2016 and immediately announced it would spend the next few years not only renovating the golf course, but also providing numerous other substantial improvements around the club. The fun and playable golf course — originally designed by Dan Maples and tweaked in 2006 by Mike Gleason — sits on a relatively flat piece of property. While it has “good bones,” according to Director of Golf Kevin Reardon, there was “not a ton of character” to the layout. To illustrate, Reardon said members would sometimes hit the same club on all five of the course’s par-3 holes. “The golf course needed more personality,” says Providence General Manager Howard Murphy. Spence’s comprehensive renovation project at Providence is focused on bunkers, new and expanded irrigation for better course conditioning, transitioning the green com-

plexes to Champion Bermuda grass, along with fashioning new, dramatic views from the fairways. “We’ll be able to keep the golf course much more consistently well-maintained,” says McConnell Golf VP of Agronomy Michael Shoun. “It’s a much-needed project that will help separate Providence from some of the other facilities in that area.” Says McConnell Golf Founder and CEO John McConnell: “Spence has an outstanding reputation for providing quality work. He is a visionary in implementing new features and modernization when he updates an existing course.” During his January presentation, Spence says the Providence golf holes were lacking “individual character.” “Bunkers do not project angles and have poor visibility,” he says. “They’ll benefit from more variety and definition on and around the green complexes, while tree removal is needed for better sight lines and shade removal.” Spence, who works dually as the architect for the project

as well as construction manager, told the audience he plans to create a fun and interesting golf course, full of variety and added drama, through the introduction of his classic design principles. “We’ll create interest and variety on green surfaces with subtle, twist-and-turn contours and the occasional plateau, shelf, swale, small knob or rolling undulation feeding in from the edges,” says Spence. “I’m very excited about it. We’re going to add a nice ‘wow’ factor to the golf course.” Spence says that unlike most of his restoration projects, Providence allows him to be more creative and diverse in the design of the bunkers in particular. “I’ve done similar bunkering with a higher sand face versus the Ross grass faces most are accustomed to seeing me do,” he says. “While Providence won’t be fashioned in the look of Ross, I’ll certainly incorporate many of his design philosophies, as well as those by other golden-age designers such as A.W. Tillinghast.” “Providence will have a unique style and strategy all of its own. The last thing we want is a course with multiple design styles. The overriding change the members will notice is the increased lateral movement of the holes around and between

the bunker, and a stronger, more noticeable strategy to the course. Both bunkers and greens will be set with more angles that correlate strategically with one another. I’ll also raise the bunkers above the flat fairway grades to better speak to the players’ thought process when choosing a line of play.” READY FOR A CHANGE A neighborhood club with a younger membership, Providence has earned a reputation as one of the Queen City’s premier family country clubs. Providence’s extensive amenities include 14 tennis courts and state-of-the-art aquatic facilities with three pools, as well as a newly constructed outdoor bar and dining area with a fire pit. With 800 families strong, Providence’s avid golfing membership played more than 28,000 rounds last year. “Our course has always been fun to play,” says Providence member Ron Kirkpatrick, who has won the club championship eight times. “The greens are generally pretty large without a tremendous amount of undulation, although there are a couple of exceptions. We aren’t blessed with a lot of elevation change on the site, so texture plays a key role from a visual standpoint.” www.mcconnellgolf.com | Spring 2018

Though the course will be closed until fall, Providence members can rest assured that their game won’t be affected. In addition to reciprocal access to 11 McConnell Golf sister properties, reciprocity has been established with 14 neighboring Charlotte clubs. It’s a great excuse to make the hour drive to Old North State Club, or retreat to the seclusion of Musgrove Mill near Clinton, S.C. With both offering on-site lodging, they’re a quick and easy road trip any time of year. “Having the other McConnell courses that we can play is a tremendous addition for our membership,” says Providence member Adam Markin, who won the club championship in 2015 and 2016, as well as the senior club championship in 2016. “We have the benefit of other top-class McConnell courses within a 90-minute drive as we carry out the course renovation.” UPGRADES ABOUND Meanwhile, renovation work is also underway on the clubhouse. The club’s Culbertson Dining Room and Turnberry Lounge are being fully updated with new furnishings. In addition, there will be a new front entrance to the restaurant. In the past two years, McConnell Golf has completed $1.3 million of renovation work on the Providence clubhouse — including an enlarged Fitness Center, renovated Golf Shop, a new bag-drop location and cart staging area, while the entire clubhouse back lawn received a major landscaping makeover. Lastly, McConnell Golf added an all-new “Providence Playhouse” kids’ activity center. With the golf course renovation and clubhouse upgrade, McConnell Golf will have invested more than $5 million in capital improvements to enhance the Providence membership experience. Murphy says the relationship with McConnell Golf has been an ideal fit for Providence. “It’s been phenomenal,” he says. “Members and staff have embraced it and Providence is flourishing. 2017 was our biggest year ever, not only in membership, but also in every single operating department. Providence was already a good club, but we are very excited about the future and what we’re building here. This is something very special.”

Kris Spence captures the existing course with a drone in order to create detailed renovation plans.

About the Architect Kris Spence first played Pinehurst No. 2 in 1985, but he remembers the experience like it was yesterday. At the time, he was a young golf course superintendent at Greensboro’s Forest Oaks Country Club. Yet during his inaugural round at No. 2, Spence noticed how the golf course made him temper his normally aggressive playing style. “As I was playing No. 2, it required me to do something completely and drastically different from all these other modern golf courses,” he says. “It was shocking to me that I couldn’t just throw the ball into those greens and fire back to those back-hole locations. I had to use different spin; I had to shape shots. I had to hit it on this side of the fairway versus that side of the fairway.” “After three or four holes I thought, ‘I have got to play a completely different game,’ ” Spence says. “This must be what it is like to play golf in Scotland.” Spence’s No. 2 debut is what he says opened his eyes to not only the genius of Donald Ross, but also the attraction of golf course architecture. More than three decades later, Spence still lives and works in Greensboro — but he has subsequently gained a reputation as one of the top restorers of Donald Ross courses. His firm, Spence Golf Design, which he opened in 2000, has carved out a productive niche around the southeast by restoring classically designed layouts. “I’m in a great area,” he says. “I can’t deny that North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia — the stars aligned for me, because there are so many golf courses around here that were built around the same time and that were needing some work — and there was a vacuum here for good, quality architecture.”

“I’m very hands-on and I’m in the field a lot. I approve every feature on every project. There’s a lot going on when I’m on site.” During the winter months, Spence does not arrive at his office quite as early as he does during spring and summer. On this cold January morning, he is at work using AutoCAD — a computeraided design and drafting software application — developing a set of technical drawings of grading plans for an upcoming project in Florida. His plans will be used by the course shapers and can also be viewed by club members. “I’m planning today,” he says. “One of the things I’m dealing with this morning is the erosion control inspector and the permits for Providence. My daily schedule runs the gamut.” For most projects, Spence makes multiple presentations to club committees and memberships. Once a project begins, Spence typically spends two or three days a week on site. Expect to see a lot of Spence in Charlotte throughout the duration of the project. Though Greensboro-based, he conveniently has a residence on High Rock Lake, cutting the commute to 45 minutes. Regardless, it will be many long evenings and time on the road for the architect.

More than a Meal Enjoy a memorable dinner at Old North State Club.

THE SUN IS SETTING AT OLD NORTH STATE CLUB, its beauty framed by the dining room’s panoramic windows. There’s a vibrant energy in the air. The club’s beloved Executive Chef Michael Monahan has something new in store for members tonight, and the smell of steaks sizzling on the grill is a tantalizing aroma. Even to those who frequent this club and dining room often, like myself, this is a special environment that never gets old. That’s because Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point is a special place, where a day spent on the links or exploring the natural beauty around the club is complemented by an elegant, memorable meal in the dining room. Monahan has been at Old North State Club since 2015, and his culinary style and trendy menu offerings have transformed the club into the place to be on Badin Lake. The members have certainly taken notice as well, as Friday and Saturday evening dining is especially popular. “A packed dining room is always a great thing,” says Monahan. “We strive for everything to be perfect for every diner, and when the dining room and bar are full, the kitchen staff is really able to fire on all cylinders.” Although he has been at Old North State Club for three years, Chef Monahan has many more years of experience with McConnell Golf under his belt, including stints at Sedgefield Country Club and the former Cardinal Golf and Country Club. He began working at the Cardinal in northwest Greensboro in 2008, taking over for current McConnell Golf Corporate Executive Chef James Patterson (or as he’s fondly known, JP). When JP left the Cardinal to oversee operations at Musgrove Mill Golf Club, he knew he was leaving the club in good hands with Monahan.

“Chef Michael has always been an asset to McConnell Golf, not only in the kitchen and behind the line, but also from an innovation standpoint,” says JP. “His background of working in restaurant kitchens helps him to view club dining operations differently from other chefs. Different ideas and discussions between our chefs is always a good thing.” Chef Monahan has transformed the dining experience at Old North State Club into much more than just a white table linen establishment. Of course the club has white tablecloths and frequent dinner specials, however, there is so much more, including themed dinners and events. From Mediterranean Night to Seafood Night to the popular oyster roast, there is always a theme to offer members something new and exciting while also keeping the culinary staff on its toes. Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to attend one of these special evenings at the club — a Butcher’s Table event, in which Chef Monahan rolled a cart of beef to each table where diners were able to choose between tenderloin or ribeye and choose the size of their cut. And this was not just any beef. It was Aberdeen Red Angus, a heritage breed originating in Scotland and grass-fed in North Carolina. There were many petite filets cut that evening, and there were also many large ribeye steaks served. Along with the choice of steak, diners could choose between a number of sides, salads, and of course dessert. Although the steak was the main feature of the evening, the accompanying side dishes also played a major role in how the meal came together. “The flavors of the protein are what most diners

enjoy, but what people do not understand is how those flavors are enhanced greatly with the addition of the proper spiced seasonings as well as the appropriate side items,” says Monahan. Also in his third year at Old North State Club, Club Manager Frank O’Hara sees an uptick in the culinary operation over the past few years. “In the dining industry, consistency is important,” says O’Hara. “Consider the private club atmosphere, where almost 100 percent of your patrons are repeat customers. The consistency dynamic is magnified that much more. One of the challenges we face every day is how to remain consistent with our menu and flavors coming out of the kitchen for the members whom enjoy certain items, while also creating new and innovative items and tastes for our members and guests to enjoy.” The next time you’re on the McConnell Golf website, head over to Old North State Club’s page and check out their calendar of events and club newsletter. Choose an event to attend, make a reservation, and book a weekend getaway to Old North State Club. I guarantee it won’t be your last! Chad Flowers is McConnell Golf’s Triad membership director.

HISTORY HISTORY By Mike Purkey

Sedgefield Country Club 9th green

Storied Past, Bright Future McConnell Golf’s link to the ACC remains strong Sedgefield Country Club has a rich and storied relationship with the Atlantic Coast Conference, providing the place where the conference was formed more than 60 years ago. McConnell Golf not only recognizes that history, but embraces it. Clubs under the McConnell umbrella continue to host men’s and women’s ACC golf championships, which makes them — and by extension all of McConnell Golf — part of the conference’s history, as well. The men’s championship has been hosted by Old North State Club and Musgrove Mill Golf Club, while the women’s championship has been held at The Reserve Golf Club and Sedgefield CC.

THE ACC IS BORN In 1923, Southern Real Estate acquired a tract of land southwest of Greensboro with the intention of building a selfsufficient community. The 3,660 acres were originally owned by New York executive John Cobb, who turned it into a hunting preserve. He called it Sedgefield. One of the amenities Southern Real Estate envisioned was a golf course. The great architect Donald Ross, who was well ensconced in Pinehurst, was summoned and agreed in 1925 to design two golf courses on the property. The first course was called Valley Brook and it officially opened in the spring of 1926. The Great Depression prevented the construction of a second course, and Valley Brook is today known as Sedgefield Country Club. But the history of Sedgefield includes more than just golf. On May 8, 1953, the birth of the Atlantic Coast Conference took place at the Sedgefield Inn, which years later would become the clubhouse for Sedgefield CC. On that morning in May, seven members of the Southern Conference withdrew from the conference during the league’s spring meeting. That afternoon, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest

agreed at the Sedgefield Inn to form another conference. Local newspapers asked their readers for ideas to name the conference. Suggestions included Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven, and the Shoreline. But it was Eddie Cameron, Duke’s athletic director, who suggested the name Atlantic Coast Conference, and it passed unanimously.

Originally named Valley Brook, the Sedgefield golf course opened in 1926

HISTORY

ARNOLD PALMER’S AFFINITY FOR GREENSBORO The first ACC golf tournament was staged in 1954 at Old Town Club and was won by Arnold Palmer, who had re-entered Wake Forest after a threeyear hitch in the Coast Guard. Palmer had withdrawn from school, despondent about the death of his close friend and Wake teammate Buddy Worsham. Worsham was responsible for Palmer being at Wake Forest. Worsham was a prized recruit and before entering school asked athletic director Jim Weaver if he could bring along a friend. Weaver wanted to know if that friend could play golf and Worsham assured the AD that Palmer could, indeed, play. With Palmer and Worsham as the anchors, Wake Forest won three Southern Conference championships. Palmer won the ACC individual title in 1948

40 McConnell Golf THE MAGAZINE

and 1949 and was the NCAA individual winner in 1950. On October 14, 1950, Worsham and teammate Gene Scheer went to the Wake Forest homecoming dance in Durham after Palmer and Jim Flick turned them down, going to a movie instead. That night, a one-car wreck killed Worsham and Scheer. Palmer left Wake Forest after the 1954 ACC Championship without graduating, heading instead to a career on the PGA Tour. When he started having success as a professional, he endowed the Buddy Worsham Scholarship at Wake Forest in 1963. Years later, Palmer endowed another scholarship in his own name and went on to endow six more scholarships at Wake. But the Worsham Scholarship remains the most prestigious. The Greater Greensboro Open tournament became important to Palmer.

He played it 13 times, even coming to Greensboro during the years the tournament was played the week before the Masters, when most big-name players skipped the event to get ready for Augusta. Palmer always said he had an affinity for Greensboro and the GGO, drawn to Sedgefield because of the memories of his old friend and teammate, Worsham. And as if playing in the event was not enough to boost the fortunes and galleries of the GGO, he once called in a big favor and got his friend Bob Hope to come to Greensboro and play in the pro-am. In 1965, Palmer agreed to attend the first Champions Dinner. While flying to town, he encountered bad weather preventing his landing in Greensboro. He could land in Charlotte but would need a ride to Greensboro. Jim Melvin,

Greensboro’s mayor at the time, convinced the Highway Patrol to pick up Palmer at the Charlotte airport and race him to Greensboro. And race they did: They made it to the dinner in an astounding 45 minutes. Palmer never won the GGO, coming close in 1972 when he had a two-shot lead with three holes to play. A triplebogey coming in thwarted his chances. But that hole on his resume doesn’t diminish what Palmer meant to Greensboro and the tournament now known as the Wyndham Championship. Last August, the Wyndham installed a plaque dedicated to Palmer on the Wall of Champions behind the ninth green at Sedgefield. With his grandson, Sam Saunders, in attendance, the plaque was dedicated. It reads: “Widely considered the most important figure in golf and one of the most influential players in Wyndham Championship history, Arnold Palmer had five top five finishes in 13 appearances at Sedgefield. In 1963, Palmer established the Buddy Worsham Memorial Scholarship at Wake Forest University in memory of his friend and teammate who died in a car accident while in school. Since that time, scholarship winners have been a consistent presence in the tournament field, always with great appreciation and admiration for Arnie.” This plaque now serves as a permanent reminder of Palmer’s contributions. Now, there’s something tangible that will remind people of his legacy every time they pass.

One of the increasingly popular trends in fitness is cycling, and McConnell Golf offers a variety of options for spinning your wheels, whether it’s out on the open roads or in a spin class at your club. Spin classes offer a riding experience similar to an outdoor ride, but on an indoor bike. Sedgefield Country Club offers spin classes twice a week, taking riders on a journey with flat stretches, sprint intervals, jumps, and seated and standing climbs. Sherri Tallant heads up the spin program at Sedgefield. She’s been a certified spin instructor since 1999, and one of her favorite benefits about the exercise program is that it’s both a mental and physical experience. “Spin allows the rider to strive for their mental and physical best,” she says. “One of the unique things about spin class is that the rider controls the amount of resistance they use based on their fitness level. We have members in their thirties in the same class with our oldest student at age 79! Everyone gets a great workout in the same ride.” The scenery isn’t bad either — during the warmer months, spin classes are often held on the patio overlooking the club’s pool. Carolyn Gorga, Sedgefield member and frequent spin class attendee, has found that the class provides truly personal rewards and challenges. “My favorite thing about the class is the friendships I’ve made with members who I might never have known,” says Gorga. “This is the type of class that anyone can do — you challenge yourself.” While she’s not yet an avid golfer, Gorga believes her spin class regimen has greatly improved her aerobic health and core strength, which will certainly improve her golf game.

In the Saddle Tips and tricks for your first spin class Arrive at class ten minutes early to get comfortable on the bike. Adjust the seat to be even with your hips; adjust handlebars to avoid neck or back strain.

Make sure feet are securely fastened to pedals.

Even though it’s a group class, keep the pace and resistance that’s best for you. Too much resistance will make the class feel impossible; too little resistance can injure your back and result in too much wiggling in the saddle.

Keep a water bottle and towel within reach. You’ll need it!

ON THE OPEN ROAD The “spinning wheels” of life take us all on different journeys. If traditional cycling on the open road is your passion, long-time Treyburn Country Club member Russ Barringer can share his life-changing experience as an avid road cyclist. Barringer has been involved in cycling since the early 1990s. Soon after he begin biking, he and his wife grew their family, which now includes two college-age sons and two daughters in high school. As many new parents know all too well, a fitness routine can easily fall by the wayside when raising children. Barringer encountered this “new

parent” crisis as well. While on a family trip in 2002, he found a scale in his room and decided to take a peek. The numbers were not as expected. So he jumped on his bike and began to pedal. “With each mile, my health improved and I was losing enough weight to revisit my serious cycling days,” he recalls. “From there, I began taking longdistance trips on my bike.” His dedicated family followed him on these trips, allowing for memories they’ll never forget. His first long distance ride was from Durham to Myrtle Beach. He completed the 185-mile trip in under ten hours, and he helped to raise more than $50,000 for Duke Children’s Hospital.

Barringer has now completed five long-distance rides taking him to 32 states. When he’s not on the open road, he takes a page from Sedgefield’s spin book, riding on his new Peloton indoor bike, a Christmas gift from his wife. Since 2008, he has completed more than 85,000 miles, a feat one can most certainly be proud of at the age of 60. “If you ever dream of doing something, do it,” says Barringer. “You’ll regret it if you don’t.” Meredith Donahue is the membership director at Grande Dunes Members Club.

TENNIS By Matt McConnell

Holding Court Game, set, dinner!

Exhibition matches have long been a celebrated occasion across the tennis facilities of McConnell Golf; however starting last year, a new twist was added — members can enjoy great food, service, and entertainment right on the court. “What can be better than dining under the stars while watching local collegiate and professional tennis players compete?” asks Kyle Thortsen, director of tennis operations. “These Dining on the Courts events are a night for the entire family to enjoy.” Here’s a rundown of the special tennis events from a few McConnell clubs. Check the website for information on upcoming events.

WAKEFIELD PLANTATION Wakefield Plantation launched the Dining on the Courts event in Fall 2016. At the most recent event, Wakefield members enjoyed a raffle for door prizes, and the Wakefield Juniors were cheered on during their matches before local tennis pros, including Pierce Hoover, Brian Rosenthal, Ben Hunter, and Matt Nicholson, competed in the main event. PROVIDENCE COUNTRY CLUB In Charlotte, members said “Hola!” to a Mexican-themed menu and matches from local tennis pros. One of the most exciting matches was the Battle of the Sexes. Former Director of Tennis Eric Winn and current Head Tennis Pro Josh Oxendine represented the men. The women’s team included former Director of Junior Tennis Ana Ruzir and camp counselor Morgan Ingram, who currently plays at UNC-Asheville. The women put up a good fight, but the men prevailed 6-3.

“My husband and I had such a great time at Dining on the Courts,” says member Claire Daniels. “The food was fabulous, and watching the pros play was absolutely a highlight. This was a new, great way to enjoy the club.” HOLSTON HILLS COUNTRY CLUB Likely the most competitive tennis-and-dinner combo took place in Knoxville. The main event included the University of Tennessee tennis teams playing, which brought a large crowd of Volunteer fans – including the most excited person to be there, Rachel Waddell’s son Corbin, who got to be the ball boy. “The dinner on the courts was a very fun evening,” says Waddell. “The food and decor was wonderful, and watching the teams play was a highlight of the night. Corbin was so excited to be the ball boy — he just had tennis camp at the club a few weeks before! He really enjoyed the camp, and watching the University of Tennessee tennis teams made him want to play more.”

OLD NORTH STATE CLUB McConnell Golf’s most popular destination property pulled out all the stops for their Dining on the Courts evening, organized by Director of Tennis Chris Callicutt and Executive Chef Michael Monahan. Members received a complimentary drink on arrival, while white tablecloths and upbeat jazz lent a chic ambiance to the Mediterraneanthemed dinner. “It was fabulous,” exclaims member Rich Miller. “We have a beautiful venue, with the patio and terrace overlooking the court. We enjoyed a professional doubles match, with a relaxed, party atmosphere. It doesn’t get much better.”

SEDGEFIELD COUNTRY CLUB Sedgefield’s event was marked with great fall weather and a casual, sociable atmosphere. While watching two collegiate tennis players during the main exhibition match, members enjoyed a dinner of citrus herb chicken and glazed salmon with spiced pecan crumble. COUNTRY CLUB OF ASHEVILLE This February, CCA hosted its second annual Grand Slam Social on their indoor tennis courts. The event featured a menu of seared tuna, beef sliders, and a batch of the official cocktail of the U.S. Open, the Honey Deuce. For the entertainment, Ben Kelley (former CCA junior and recent graduate of Presbyterian College) and CCA Director of Tennis Bill Barber took on Henry Patten (UNC-Asheville’s No. 1 player) and Alix Theodossiou (a former CCA junior and recent graduate of UNC-Wilmington). Last year, Kelley, who is the top player in school history, helped his team win the Big South tournament and gain entry into the NCAA tournament for the first time. Meanwhile at UNCW, Theodossiou played the No. 3 spot her senior year and her team finished second in the Colonial Conference. Patten is currently ranked No. 32 in the NCAA men’s singles, the highest ranking ever for a UNCA player. Both Patten and Theodossiou played incredibly well and despite Barber and Kelley putting up a strong fight, the young duo won 8-5. Following the doubles play, Patten and Kelley played an entertaining set of singles to finish off the evening’s entertainment.

THE BACK NINE By John Maginnes

The Future is Bright Harold Varner III on his North Carolina roots and promising future. HAROLD VARNER III IS ENJOYING HIS THIRD FULL season on the PGA Tour, and he’s one of the few PGA Tour players who looks like he’s actually having fun on the golf course. During his time at East Carolina University, he was the first Pirate to be named Conference USA Player of the Year — and his progress has been steady since. I caught up with Harold in Palm Springs, CA, shortly before the Career Builder Challenge. We did not delight in the fact that we were there on a 75-degree day, while North Carolina was under a blanket of snow. (At least, we tried not to.) Perhaps as much as any in the golf world, Harold appreciates his good fortune, because it came as a result of hard work. JM: When did you know that you could compete with the best players in the game? HV: I had an idea in college because I had a great junior year and started beating most of the best players. Obviously you have to be on top of your game, but I never really doubted myself. JM: When you were a kid, the Wells Fargo Championship came to Charlotte, and there was the Wyndham as well. Did you attend?

HV: I don’t want to put too many expectations out there for him. I just want him to play a full season healthy. It’s crazy how important that is now. I personally can’t imagine not being able to play golf even if it wasn’t out here on the PGA Tour. So just to be able to play and have his body hold up would be great. JM: You have the jump man hat on and the MJ shoes. How did you meet Michael Jordan? HV: I was asked to play in the HoopTee, which is the charity event run by the Hornets. Fred Whitfield is someone that I got to know and he put in a good word for me, and it’s just a great opportunity to work with the brand. Being from North Carolina and being associated with one of the greatest names in sports is pretty cool. And the shoes and clothes are awesome. JM: Twenty years from now, when your career is winding down, what do you want your legacy to be? HV: I want to have made the world a better place. There is too much money and opportunity out here not to affect change. I have this tremendous stage to have my voice heard, so I don’t know why I wouldn’t use it.

HV: Definitely. I remember it vividly. We went to the old Wachovia [now Wells Fargo] in all kinds of weather. Especially when Tiger was playing every year, obviously being my favorite player. I love playing in them. Last year being in contention in Greensboro brought out a lot of ECU fans, and my sister lives in Greensboro, so that was a really cool week.

JM: Some of that change you can affect is at home in North Carolina. Will that always be home?

JM: You didn’t play in the Tiger Woods era, but maybe that era isn’t quite over. What are you expecting from Tiger in his latest comeback?

John Maginnes is a former PGA player and hosts the popular Katrek & Maginnes on Tap broadcast on the PGA Tour Satellite Radio Network.

58 McConnell Golf THE MAGAZINE

HV: Always. My parents are there, and I just moved back to Charlotte. I will always call it home.
