JUNIOR GOLF JUNIOR GOLF UPDATES 2020 was both a year of challenges and success stories for our Junior Golf Program. With restrictions in place, we were not able to offer our Summer Fun Camps as we normally would with activities eliminated or modified as well. However the positives from 2020 far outweigh the negatives as were able to modify and hold successful events to keep our juniors engaged, including online golf challenges, a modified Junior Interclub season, hosting a TYGA event and our Junior Club Championship, as well as the launch of our inaugural Operation 36 offerings.
2021 JUNIOR PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS OPERATION 36 Semester #1 March-April Semester #2 May-June Semester #3 July-August Semester #4 September-October JUNIOR INTERCLUB Mondays, June-August Ages: 10-18 SUMMER FUN KIDS CAMPS Camp #1 June 22-25 Camp #2 August 10-13 Ages: 5-12 Look for full details of the 2021 Junior Golf Program to be announced very soon. If you have any questions, concerns, or requests – please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Golf Shop staff. We look forward to making 2021 our best year for Junior Golf Activities yet!
Our BV Junior Interclub Team was able to participate in the Eastern NC Jr. Golf League. Each club hosted smaller fields that allowed us to travel to our neighbor clubs to compete in a safe environment. The Brook Valley team was victorious in every match played this season!! Four of our juniors qualified for an end of the year individual finale which was held at the Emerald Golf Club in New Bern. Here are our juniors that qualified and their results: Boys 14-15: Will Guidry - 45 (4th) Boys 12-13: Lake Williams - 32 (1st) Boys 11 & Under: Holden Carson - 41 (3rd) Girls 12-13: Carys Carson - 39 (2nd) 2020 Junior Interclub Team: Anthony Alexander, Carys Carson, Holden Carson, RJ Cummings, Will D’Alonzo, Will Guidry, Cam Hardison, Blake Hess, Hayden Humphreys, Hayes Mahoney, Wells Mahoney, Mac McCall, Gray Mitchum, Flynn Nease, Tucker Odom, Noah Porter, Lake Williams, Tyler Winkler
We also would like to congratulate Gray Mitchum on winning the inaugural TYGA Todd Kinlaw Memorial this summer hosted here at Brook Valley. Gray was also victorious in our Junior Club Championship winning the overall championship, with Carys Carson winning the 9 Hole Division. Despite the season getting off to a slow start due to restrictions in place, we were able to offer three semesters of Op36 junior activities and look forward to expanding the program to become even bigger and better in 2021. If you are unfamiliar with what Operation 36 is all about, we highly encourage you to use the link below to watch a short video about the program. Op36 has become one of the world’s most effective programs based on a combination of instruction, technology, and most importantly play in introducing new golfers to the game. The goal is to shoot 36 or better in a progressive developmental model by making this goal more achievable as your skill level develops. More details about our 2021 offerings will be announced as we officially launch our junior programs in the early spring. In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact a member of the Golf Shop staff for details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV6UA4lLx_Q

A NOTE FROM THE PRO
2021 SCHEDULE OF GOLF EVENTS
A BIG THANKS goes out to you all for your support of our Brook Valley Golf Operations in 2020! It was one of the most difficult seasons we have had to endure with Covid-19 causing us to cancel many events and modify many others. However all your patience and perseverance will be the true story of our 2020 golf season that none of us will soon forget. We had our most successful MemberMember Tournament to date as a McConnell Golf facility with a record number of 64 participants. This trend continued as we had our most ever participants in our Club Championship with 46 participants and our Purple & Gold Tournament with 40 participants. We had record numbers of rounds for the year and at the time this newsletter was put together we were on pace for 15,000 rounds. Thank you all for making 2020 a year none of us will soon forget for all the right reasons!
The Golf Staff has been hard at work in the off season creating an excellent calendar of events for our membership in 2021. Below you can find a list of the major events for this year, along with maintenance dates and a few of the larger events our Club will host this season. In addition to our Friday night Couples Golf events, look for the addition of “Sunday Funday” Golf events, which will be geared to both couples and families to get out and enjoy the course in a relaxed atmosphere. Look for a finalized version of this year’s golf schedule for Brook Valley as well as all McConnell Golf clubs to be published in the McConnell Golf Schedule booklet to be mailed out soon!
In 2021, hopefully we will be able to start off our season in March in a safe and fun manner. You can find a preliminary 2021 Schedule of Golf Events in this newsletter. In addition to our favorite events hosted here at the Club, we have added in a TwoMan Spring Scramble the first week of May and tweaked a few dates based on the success of 2020. The Club Championship will be held in July, Member-Member once again in August, and our Ellis Maples Invitation the first week of October. The 2021 Golf Calendar should have a nice flow to it throughout the season, keeping events spread out at times we expect the course to be in the best shape. We also will continue to offer Friday night Couples Golf events, but we have added in Sunday Funday family golf events as well. These new events will still be geared towards our Couples groups, but we hope to implement formats that will encourage families to play as well. Look for a finalized Golf Calendar to be sent out in February with additional MGA, McConnell Golf, Ladies and Couples Golf events that hopefully will be offered. Finally I would like to add thanks to you all on behalf of the Golf Staff on your generous contributions to the employee holiday fund. All of us hear at the Club are greatly appreciative and we only hope to continue to serve you better in 2021! I look forward to seeing you all at the Club soon. Riley Kinlaw Director of Golf

TEE IT UP BV MGA UPDATE Thank you to all the members of the Brook Valley Men’s Golf Association for both their patience and participation in a season filled with curveballs and modifications. We had a delayed start to the season, but were still able to host 15 Men’s Night events, the Scott Groot Match Play, Purple & Gold Tournament, and our Shoot-Out finale. Art Graepel was once again victorious in the Scott Groot Match Play, successfully making his way through the match play bracket for the third year in a row. Also throughout the season, participants in MGA events earn points in the “Race-to-the-Finish” Points Series, and in 2020 we were able to still keep our Points Series in place. Kenneth Smith won the regular season points title with 460 points, just ahead of both Wade Stanley and Rich Rados with 450 points each. Wade Stanley won the most events with five victories and Frank Lee participated in the most events playing in 17 MGA competitions. Brent Carter was the 2020 MGA Shoot-Out Champion, winning the team title with partner Richard Wilson over Ross Ringler and Rob Burleson. In 2021, we hope to see a return to normalcy before the season begins. Look for the Annual MGA Meeting to determine 2021 Officers and discuss activities for 2021 to be announced soon. Men’s Night events will start March 25 and the Scott Groot Match Play will begin the first full week of May. Look for other important dates on the 2021 Golf Schedule. If you are interested in joining the BV MGA in 2021, a formal announcement will go out early in the year. Dues will be payable at that time. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact a member of the Golf Shop staff, or a BV MGA Board Member. We look forward to another exciting year of MGA Golf! TEE IT UP & TURF TALK GREETINGS BVCC MEMBERS As we are beginning to transition to consistently cooler temperatures, it is time for some communication on the course. Overall, the course is doing fine. I am seeing winter weeds emerging all around Greenville and not on the course. This means our preemergence applications back in early October are working well. The fairways, tees and greens have slowed their growth and are ready to go completely dormant soon. As some of you have noticed, three large trees have been removed from the course. One was a huge oak between four and six which partially came down during the last storm. Another one was at the back tee on two. This tree was dying and was becoming a safety issue. Finally, the large pine behind the fairway bunker on seven was taken out due to it complicating shots into the green. These areas will be sodded in the coming spring. One notable project that is in the works is the large drain between four and six. This project is going to take a bit of time and digging. But, it is going to be done correctly. The old 12 inch metal pipe has rusted away causing erosion and sinkholes to continually emerge. This pipe will be replaced with updated plastic and around the drain will be re-graded to allow water to enter the basin efficiently. Painting of the greens has been accomplished and the process went well and the three-hole system was also implemented on the greens. This system will reduce cutting new cups and placing plugs that will not grow in during dormancy. We continue to work on trimming back azaleas around the course, cleaning up leaves, utilizing asphalt patch on the cart paths and cleaning up tree line areas. I am hopeful that everyone had a healthy and happy holiday season and I look forward to providing future updates and communicating positive conditions on a frequent basis. As always, please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns regarding your course. Owen Legg Brook Valley Superintendant

THE VALLEY VOICE
Several years ago, at one of our annual corporate meetings, an idea was brought to the table that we needed a Lagniappe of our own that would show our appreciation to members and their guests for dining with us. This idea quickly grew to a collaboration of our executive chefs, their staff members and other club staff submitting cookie recipes to be used in our monthly rotation. These cookies would be a bite size sweet treat for everyone who had lunch at one of our properties in the dining room. As McConnell Golf has grown we have been able to feature a club each month, in addition to recipes from our CEO John McConnell and COO Christian Anastasiadis, the Easter bunny and Santa Claus. Beyond baking and serving these delicious treats in our clubs each month, we also share the recipe in our newsletter and online blog that includes a special story or meaning behind them. Our culinary teams have embraced this idea and continue to showcase their talents with these delectable sweet treats, from our kitchens to yours.

COOKIE OF THE MONTH JANUARY COOKIE Cocoa-Molasses Drop Cookies Bruce McIntosh - Country Club of Asheville Yield 2-3 Dozen From 1985-2015, H. Robert Sharbaugh was a member of the Country Club of Asheville and had served time as a member of the board for a number of years. He was very well-known and admired by club members and staff alike. He meant a great deal to me, especially during my earlier years at the club. One memory of him that stands out to me in particular was the year that, this selfproclaimed chocoholic, gifted me a very old, yet pristine Hershey’s cookbook from 1934 that had been revised and reprinted in 1971. I think of him fondly every time I open the binding to see his name on the inside cover. Thank you for your service to our country and the many laughs throughout the years. This one is for you Mr. Sharbaugh! Ingredients: 1/3 Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar 1/3 Cup Molasses 1 Egg 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour, sifted 1 TSP Baking Powder 3 TBSP Hershey’s Cocoa Powder or whatever you have on hand 1/2 Cup Chopped Nuts
Directions: Cream butter and sugar; add molasses and the egg. Sift together all dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients. Fold in the nuts and scoop mixture into 1 inch rounds onto a greased and lined sheet pan. Bake at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes.
FEBRUARY COOKIE Chocolate Dipped Coconut Macaroon Cookie John Crawford - Providence Country Club Yield: 4 dozen This has been one of my favorite cookie recipes for as long as I can remember. As a kid my grandmother would make these for us when we would come and visit. While all of the others would devour the chocolate chip cookies, I had these all to myself. If you like coconut and chocolate, this recipe is for you! With the toasted outside, creamy inside and smooth chocolate to tie it all together, it cannot get much better. Ingredients: 16oz. Sweetened Flaked Coconut 1 Cup Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 TSP Vanilla ExtractPinch of Salt 6oz. Semisweet Chocolate Chips 2 Large Egg Whites
Directions: Start by mixing the coconut, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt thoroughly in a mixing bowl. Next, separate the egg whites from the yolk and beat the egg whites until they form a stiff peak. Gently fold the egg whites into the coconut mixture. Using a small scoop, scoop the mixture onto a parchment lined sheet pan spacing each about two inches apart. Place the macaroons in a 325°F preheated oven for 25 minutes, rotating as needed to prevent burning. While macaroons are baking in the oven, melt the chocolate in a double boiler or microwave, stirring frequently. When cookies have cooled completely, dip the bottoms in the melted chocolate and place them on a clean sheet of parchment paper.
