GOLF UPDATES
Dear Members,
As we head into the New Year, our staff would like to thank you all for a wonderful 2024 golf season We have enjoyed each and every event throughout the year and look forward to elevating your experiences in 2025!
Brand new to this winter season is our greens covers, which will help tremendously in maintaining healthy green surfaces heading into the spring. When temperatures reach substantially low numbers, these covers will be placed overtop the greens which will prevent play on the golf course We have already had two of these instances this winter Notifications will be sent out to the membership when our grounds crew plans to utilize the covers.
Frost delays are also a common theme during the winter months. If you are scheduled to play in the morning hours, be on the lookout for any frost delay notifications You may also find this information on the tee sheet notes
The 2025 golf schedule will be released in early February We have added a few brand-new events to the calendar next year and are excited for what’s to come!
As a friendly reminder, our golf shop is stocked with all of your winter needs Stop by and check us out!
We look forward to seeing you in the New Year and are hopeful for favorable golf weather throughout the first couple months!

TURF TALK
As predicted, we had a colorful autumn with an abundance of leaves Fortunately, we also had some beautiful weather before the holiday season With the greens a little quicker than in year’s past, the warmer days we were able to catch made for some fun rounds of golf The temperature has definitely changed its mind now. Keeping the greens healthy during the winter months can be more challenging than the summer. It takes a combination of disease management, moisture management, and knowing when to add an extra layer of protection on those bone chilling nights. Moisture is arguably the most important.
Disease management requires monthly applications of fungicides Moisture management is a little more involved If we have not received significant rainfall in the 2 to 3 days, we start checking notoriously dry parts of every green and collar on the course You may see one of the maintenance team walking around on a green periodically prodding the greens with a dark red, handheld, moisture meter. This instrument is invaluable. In warmer months, when the grass is growing, a green will tell us when it is dry. The green will get dry and localized dry spots will turn a tan color. We then apply extra water to those areas, as needed, and all is well. In the winter, we do not have that indicator, as the greens are mostly dormant This is where the moisture meter is necessary It will tell us the exact volumetric water content of the soil, specifically in the root zone of the green If we get below 25% before a cold weather event, we are in the danger zone and need to apply water Above 30% and we are safe It’s a fine line, but we always err on the side of too wet when it gets really cold A dry green in freezing temps is more detrimental to the health of green than a dry green in the middle of summer
Once we manage the water before an extremely cold evening, it is time to add another layer of protection. Thankfully, we purchased greens covers in the spring of 2024. Research has shown the combination of proper moisture levels, and greens covers designed for the purpose, is our best chance of keeping ultra dwarf Bermuda greens healthy in extremely cold weather The only downside to covering greens is the time it takes to deploy them before a weather event and store them after We will always take the golfers perspective into account when we schedule the covering It takes approximately four hours to cover the greens and nearly the same to store the covers Please bear with us when the need to cover does arrive. We will get you back on the course as soon as possible.
Everyone in the golf maintenance department is looking forward to a great golfing season in 2025. We hope this will be the best year yet. Green grass, beautiful fairways, and quick greens are right around the corner Stay warm for now, and we’ll see you on the course!
Yours in turf,
Buckley Brockmann Golf Course Superintendent & General Manager
