GOLF UPDATES
Dear Members,
We have reached the midpoint of the year, and our biggest golf events of the year are right around the corner. Without hardly any precipitation in nearly a month, the golf course and practice facilities have had plenty of action over the last couple months!
With the June aerification in the rear-view mirror, the golf course will be rounding into top shape for Men’s Member-Member, Ladies’ MemberMember, and the Ellis Maples Invitational We are excited for these prestigious member events and look forward to providing an atmosphere for competitive golf and wonderful club memories
May and June also provided some great golf events at the club such as the Men’s 6/6/6 won by the teams of Ron Cooke & Will Brinson and Cam Edwards & Jeff Cargile There was also the exciting Taps & Tees event where five of our local breweries joined us on the golf course and provided samples of some of their best-selling craft beers These were both popular new events to the golf schedule this year!
Our golf shop remains stocked with apparel and accessories from some of the top brands in the industry! We will be expecting our fall shipments to begin arriving in late July and early August. These shipments include brand new headwear from Branded Bills and TaylorMade in addition to apparel from Stitch and Johnnie-O The fall shipment of Johnnie-O will feature a special line of ECU Pirate options!
July and August are sure to be the best months of the year, and we look forward to seeing you and your families enjoying quality time at the club!

TURF TALK
It was a beautiful May followed by a record breaking hot and dry June Golf course aeration went very well that first full week in June, but then someone turned off the faucet From June 5th to June 24th we recorded a grand total of 0 30 inches of rain
The good news about a draught is we get a free audit of our irrigation system. Any irrigation head not working properly becomes very evident. Our irrigation system is definitely showing its age. The Golf Course Maintenance team has repaired or replaced over 20 irrigation heads in the span of 3 weeks
Most areas on the course have healed up as expected after aeration We cannot thank you enough for giving us the time to take care of the course appropriately This spring we had the most grass retention in the collars of the greens that we have seen in years We saw very little winterkill, or winter desiccation. This is a direct result of the combination of proper aeration, fertility, and water management. Aerating makes a big difference. The benefits far outweigh the costs.
Over the summer months we have enough staff to keep the golf course in good shape, but we do not often have the time for side projects Typically, we spend any extra time in the summer on irrigation assessment and repair This fall we will be adding sand to several bunkers, and will be looking at some landscaping updates
This is also a great time for my yearly reminder to apply bug spray, or spray on sunscreen, over a paved surface. The propellant used in personal protectant sprays can chemically burn turfgrass. When these products are applied over grass, we often see a set of green footprints surrounded by a circle of brown. If used on a golf green the grass can die. Please think before you apply protectants.
For home lawns, now is not the time to apply herbicides The combination of high temperatures and lack of rain can be lethal when herbicides are added to the equation Water your yard as you see fit and keep it cut this time of year You will have time for other practices toward the autumn of the year.
Stay cool, stay hydrated, apply your sunscreen (on the cart path), and we hope to see you on the course!
Yours in turf,
Buckley Brockmann
GC Superintendent
