JUNIORS
BARRACUDAS BARRACUDA SWIM TEAM Can you believe we are only 3 months away from the beginning of summer swim season? As the league starts to meet again this year we will discuss dues and the season. Brook Valley is in need of a parent volunteer that will sit in on the board of director meetings with Ashley once a month now through October. These meeting are to discuss the season and policies and procedures for the league. Please reach out to Ashley about helping with the board. As we approach the season be prepared to volunteer! As all of you returning parents know the meet cannot run without volunteers. That means for your kids to swim you are needed to time, judge, scorekeeper, starter, take waters around to volunteers and HAVE FUN! We will have three home meets which are the meets we will need the scorekeeper, starter and hospitality runner. Before the season starts, we will have some training for scorekeeper and judges. As intimidating as judging sounds it is an easy position and you get a bird's eye view of the swimmers. We need to have 8 volunteers to take the judges class which will be announced at the beginning of the season. Great news that at this time Coach Peyton will be back this summer as well as help from Coach Mac.
EASTER EGG HUNT AT BROOK VALLEY Hop into Brook Valley and say hey to the Easter Bunny. We will have 1000 eggs on the lawn to find for all ages! Egg hunts for ages 5 & Under will start at 12:00 and anyone 6 & over will start at approximately 12:15. Who will find the golden egg this year? We will have one hidden for each age group with a special prize! Following the egg hunt join us for lunch in the lakeview room, patio or grab something to take home with you.
If you would like to be added to the Barracuda email list, contact Ashley Odom at aodom@brookvalleycc.com.

TURF TALK Let's Talk Turf Spring appears to have sprung. It seems like it is a bit early this year. Normally we are not cutting greens 7 days a week in the beginning of March, but that is where we are. Our greens went from being dormant to actively growing, almost overnight. The good news is we don’t appear to have lost any grass from winterkill, desiccation, or disease. All of the greens made it through the winter healthy and whole. We have lowered heights of cut on the greens, topdressed them with sand, and continue to cut and roll them regularly. We should be at summer speeds in short order. The soil temperatures are rising quickly. If we continue to see warmer temperatures during the day, and the nighttime temps stay above 50°, it won’t take long for the fairways and rough to start greening up. It is a great time to apply pre-emergent herbicide on your lawn. We just finished making our herbicide application across the entire property. While you may not be able to see the immediate effects of our application, we did leave a trail. If you see blue dots in the fairway, those are where the foam marker was dropped from the sprayer. We add a bit of dye to the marker in case the foam dissipates. This marking shows us where we’ve been and helps prevent misapplication. One other sign of progress you might see on the course are two parallel lines cut into the turf along tree lines. We have been lucky enough to borrow a root pruner from our friends at Porter’s Neck in Wilmington. The root pruner cuts into the turf just deep enough to sever tree roots, but not damage underground irrigation lines. Trees tend to rob the turf of water and nutrients. Cutting these surface roots typically does not harm the trees, but often dramatically improves turf quality. We have also used the pruner along cart paths to prevent further buckling of the path surface. We have a few projects planned for the spring and summer. Some funds have been approved to refurbish several of the worst bunkers. Near 9 tee, irrigation infrastructure will be replaced with a flexible pipe across the creek. Around the clubhouse, areas of overgrown shrubbery and landscaping will be removed, replaced, or dramatically pruned. After the azaleas bloom we will be cutting them back somewhat severely. In the short term this may not be pleasing to the eye, but please be patient. When the foliage returns the bushes will have a much better shape and be healthier after the procedure. Get out there and enjoy the golf course and this beautiful weather. If you have questions about anything on the course, please do not hesitate to reach out. I always enjoy talking with folks about what we are doing to improve conditions. See you on the course!

MARCH COOKIE OF THE MONTH: OLD FASHIONED OATMEAL COOKIES BY RHETT SORG, EXCUTIVE CHEF AT RESERVE When I was little, my mother use to make this cookie along with one that was my brother's favorite. It started to become a comfort food for me. As time passed and family started going their own way, I didn’t get a chance to have this cookie very often. Even though I had the recipe, it never turned out the way mom made it. Now, when family gets together my mother has a batch of these sitting on the counter when I get there. Boy are they good! Not very healthy, but I’ll make the sacrifice. Ingredients: ¾ Cup Canola Oil ¼ Cup Brown Sugar, packed 2 Large Eggs, room temperature ½ Cup Milk 1 Package Spice Cake Mix 2 Cups Old Fashion Oats 2½ Cups Raisins 1 cup Pecans, chopped Directions: 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat oil and brown sugar until blended. 2. Beat in eggs, then milk. 3. Combine cake mix and oats, gradually add to brown sugar mixture and mix well. 4. Fold in raisins and pecans. 5. Drop by tablespoon two inches apart onto greased baking sheets. 6. Bake at 350°F until golden brown, 10-12 minutes. 7. Cool for one minute before removing to wire racks.

APRIL COOKIE OF THE MONTH: GREEK ALMOND COOKIES PETER SPEAR, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT PROVIDENCE COUNTRY CLUB I used to watch my grandmother make these for all holidays as well as for the local Greek churches for their Greek Festivals. Ingredients 5 Cups AP Flour 1½ Cup of Blanched Almonds 2 Cups Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 TSP Vanilla Extract 2 TBSP Brandy (optional) 2 Cups Confectioners’ Sugar (divided)
Instructions 1. Place the toasted almonds in a food processor and grind until finely chopped. 2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, chopped almonds, one cup confectioner's sugar and stir. 3. Sprinkle the vanilla extract and brandy over the dry ingredients. 4. Add the olive oil and knead into a dough. 5. The dough should stick together when pressed but have a slight crumbly feeling, which is characteristic of a shortbread dough. If too crumbly, add olive oil one tablespoon at a time until the right consistency is achieved. 6. These traditional cookies are often shaped into crescents, buttons or balls. An easy trick is to shape them into buttons using a tablespoon measure. 7. If you want to do the same, fill a tablespoon measure with some dough, pressing the dough to give it the rounded shape of the measure. Once shaped, place the cookies on a baking tray covered with parchment paper or a silicon baking sheet. 8. While shaping the cookies, preheat the oven to 325°F. 9. Bake the cookies in the oven at 325°F for 20 minutes or until they begin to turn a very slight sandy color. 10. Once cooled, place the cookies in a pan with the remaining confectioner's sugar and coat.
