JUNIOR GOLF
JUNIOR INTERCLUB Mondays, June-August Ages: 10-18 Brook Valley looks forward to once again participating in the Eastern NC Junior Golf League in 2021. Brook Valley advanced and won the league finals in both 2018 and 2019, and in 2020 did not lose a match all season! (Teams did not participate in the league finals due to Covid concerns last year). We hope to have a more "normal" season for our juniors in 2021 and we look forward to continuing our success of the last three seasons! Matches most likely will be "one on one" against other area clubs to keep events a little bit smaller, this was very well received in 2020 and allowed for a competitive, fun, and safe environment for our juniors. Details and dates for this year's matches are still planning stages, look for more information to be sent out soon.
OPERATION 36 UPDATE Our Operation 36 Program is officially underway with Semester #2 being held the months of May and July. Look for dates and times for Semester #3 registration to be sent out soon! TEE IT UP & TURF TALK GREETINGS BVCC MEMBERS
WELCOME BUCKLEY BROCKMANN
May is finally here and those warmer night time temperatures are right around the corner. This is great news for the course as Bermudagrass begins its full green-up process when the night time temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees. This year’s spring course fertilization is scheduled to arrive on the morning of May 11th and it should be perfect timing to provide a steady feed to the tees, fairways and rough. Spring greens aerification has been completed and the process went perfect. The ¼ inch tines removed a good percentage of old organic matter. This process also allows for soil venting and air movement throughout the root zone. The crew has been working hard to re-sod some collars around several greens that incurred damage due to excessive wear throughout the past year.
We would like to announce a change in management for the position of golf course superintendent at Brook Valley Country Club. Owen Legg, who has served as the golf course superintendent at Brook Valley since 2016, has decided to resign from the position to pursue other opportunities. We appreciate Owen’s hard work and dedication to Brook Valley during his tenure and wish him well in his future endeavors. In mid-May, Buckley Brockmann will begin leading the golf course maintenance crew as the superintendent of BVCC.
It is with mixed emotions that I have to report this will be my last newsletter. While I am excited to begin a new chapter, it has also been my pleasure to serve as your Golf Course Superintendent. Your support for the club is truly unique. Brook Valley is a special place and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of your club, the membership and comradery will leave a lasting impression on me. I am confident that Brook Valley will continue to grow and prosper under your new Superintendent. Thank you again for all your friendships and support you have shown to me and the entire maintenance team Owen Legg Brook Valley Superintendant
THE VALLEY VOICE
Buckley grew up on a farm outside of Washington, Missouri. He earned a communications degree from Missouri Western State University while playing on the football team. Buckley has worked at 9 golf courses throughout his career including Greenville Country Club and Washington Yacht & Country Club. Buckley comes to us from Beechwood Country Club, where he has been the superintendent since 2016. Additionally, Buckley speaks with the students at the ECU School of Hospitality every semester where he shares views and inspires the students on how to be successful in career and life. His extensive experience and leadership skills make him an outstanding candidate for the superintendent position at Brook Valley. We are grateful to have him join the McConnell Golf team and look forward to the value he will bring to our facility. Buckley brings with him his family of 2 children, Molly (age 13) and Dash (age 10), and his wife of 19 years, Gretchen. Gretchen currently serves as Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life at East Carolina University. Also keep an eye out for Pepper, a 6 year old Brittany spaniel, and part of the Brockmann family. Pepper will be helping to control the geese on the golf course. The family likes to seek out new adventures such as hiking the mountains of NC, spending time at the Outer Banks, or trying to bring an old jeep back into working order. Please join me in welcoming the Brockmanns to the McConnell Golf family.

COOKIE OF THE MONTH MAY COOKIE Clear-The-Cupboard Coconut Oatmeal Pecan Cookie Rhett Sorg - The Reserve Golf Club at Pawley's Island Having first had them at a friend’s house, her mother had made them for her for years. She was not really interested in them at all, having eaten “thousands” of them. Kind of like a Lays Chip “Can’t eat just one”. So I ate all that were there. As time went on I met her mother and we talked about the cookies and how I’m not a very good baker. We went to the kitchen and “cleared the cupboard” and made the cookies. I have been a big fan ever since and make them occasionally for my kids when they come home. Haven’t had any left over’s yet!!!! Yield: About 4 Dozen Cookies
Ingredients: 1 Cup Shortening 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Brown Sugar, firmly packed 2 Large Eggs 2 Cups AP Flour 1 Cup Uncooked Oats 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 TSP Baking Powder 1 TSP Salt 1 Cup Flaked Coconut 1 Cup Crisp Rice Cereal 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 1 Cup Pecans, chopped
Directions: 1.Beat shortening at medium speed with electric mixer until fluffy; add sugars, beat well. 2. Add eggs, beat until blended. 3. Combine flour, oats, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; gradually add to sugar mixture, beating until blended. 4. Stir in coconut, cereal, vanilla, and pecans. 5. Drop by Tablespoonfuls onto baking sheets. 6. Bake in batches at 350°F for 10 minutes or until lightly golden. 7.Remove to wire cooling rack.
JUNE COOKIE No Bake Cookies Robin Bilodeau - Sedgefield Country Club One of my personal favorite combinations is always chocolate and peanut butter. My mom used to make these for us when we were younger except she would joke around and call them cow patties. She likes to make these during the summer months to avoid the heat of cutting on the oven. I remember anxiously awaiting for dinner to be over so we could have a no bake cookie and robbing the fridge when there were extras!!
Ingredients: 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter 1 ¾ Cups Granulated Sugar 1/3 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder 1/2 Cup Milk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 2/3 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter 3 Cups Quick Oats Dash of Salt
THE VALLEY VOICE
Directions: 1. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. In a 2.5 to 3 quart medium saucepan combine butter, sugar, cocoa, and milk. 3. Set over medium heat, and cook, stirring frequently until it reaches a full boil (should be rolling boil/bubbling). 4. Allow mixture to boil for 60 seconds without stirring. 5. Remove from heat, immediately add in vanilla, peanut butter and quick oats. 6. Stir mixture until well combined, then, using a medium (2 TBSP) cookie scoop or two spoons drop mixture onto lined baking sheets. 7. Refrigerate until set. 8. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
