JUNIOR GOLF JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday-Sunday, November 21-22
OPERATION 36 Thanks to all our juniors (and parents) that made our inaugural year of Operation 36 junior programs such a success. Despite the season getting off to a slow start due to restrictions in place, we were able to offer three semesters of Op36 junior activities and look forward to expanding the program to become even bigger and better in 2021, potentially expanding into all golf programs here at the club.
If you are unfamiliar with the what Operation 36 is all about, we highly encourage you to use the link below to watch a short video about the program. Op36 has become one of the world’s most effective programs based on a combination of instruction, technology, and most importantly play in introducing new golfers to the game. The goal is to shoot 36 or better in a progressive developmental model by making this goal more achievable as your skill level develops. New golfers will feel success from day 1 – helping our sport to retain new golfers that are having more fun on the course. More details about our 2021 offerings will be announced as we officially launch our junior programs in the early spring. In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact a member of the Golf Shop staff for details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV6UA4lLx_Q
The Junior Club Championship is designed for our juniors to put into practice what they have learned throughout the 2020 Junior Golf Program! The format for this event will be individual stroke play. Players of different age groups will compete using the appropriate tee markers and amount of holes based on their skill level. A maximum score will be established for each hole, enabling juniors of all ages and skill levels to participate. Only juniors competing in the Championship Division will play both Saturday and Sunday. Younger age groups will compete on Sunday only. Boys and girls, ages 5-18, will have the chance to participate in the Brook Valley Junior Club Championship. If you have a junior under the age of 5, check with the Golf Shop Staff to see if they are ready to participate. FORMAT The tournament will be a 36 Hole Individual Stroke Play event for the CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION from the Blue Tees. Any age Junior (up to 18) may sign up for the Championship Division if they are ready to compete! The juniors that are not ready to compete in the Championship Division may sign up to play Sunday only. Sunday's Divisions will be based upon sign up and participation, age groups, and skill level.
*For the enjoyment of all players, there will be a maximum score per hole of Double Par.* STARTING TIMES Starting Times on both Saturday and Sunday will be based on participation. We will notify everyone of starting times in advance to allow for preparations.
TYGA Todd Kinlaw Memorial Results On Saturday, October 17th the Tarheel Youth Golf Association hosted the inaugural Todd Kinlaw Memorial here at Brook Valley Country Club. The event was named in honor of our Director of Golf Riley's brother Todd, and avid golfer himself, after he passed away earlier this year from a form of cancer. The event raised over $1000 that was donated back to Brook Valley's junior golf program in Todd's name. Our Brook Valley juniors represented themselves well in the event. Congratulations to Gray Mitchum on winning the overall tournament title! Gray has been playing great golf all season long, and posted a one under par 71 on a windy day with difficult scoring conditions for the low round of all age groups, edging out Cam Hardison, who finished 2nd in the 16-18 age group. Will Guidry tied for 1st place in the 14-15 age group and Noah Porter and Lake Williams finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 12-13 age group. Congrats to all the juniors that played and a great day at the club!

Both golfers played some superb golf all season long and should be very proud of how they played in this event this year. TEE IT UP CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS CONGRATULATIONS KEVIN STALLINGS AND DALE PENDRY! Your 2020 Men's and Senior Club Champions!!
The 2020 Club Championship is officially complete and what a wonderful weekend of competition and fellowship we had! Thanks to all 46 of our contestants, our biggest Club Championship under McConnell Golf, for their participation in the event. Once again our excellent Ellis Maples designed course proved to be both a difficult but fair test to all. We applaud each and every one of the players in the field that took on both the course as well as all of the participants and offer congratulations to all of Division and Flight Winners. The biggest of those congratulations goes out to our two overall Champions Kevin Stallings and Dale Pendry. Mr. Stallings repeated as Men's Club Champion by once again outlasting the competition by being the only player in the field to post two rounds in the 70's for the tournament. Kevin posted a final round 75 after a first round 79 to post a 154 total, good for a two shot victory over Tee Davies. Dale Pendry played his final nine holes in 35 to post a final round 80 to go with a first round 85 for a 165 total to squeak by Allan Hinds and win by two. Great job to both of these deserving Champions on their fine play! Our Flight Champions also played some fantastic golf for the week, with tight battles throughout the competition. Congratulations to you all on your performances, a complete list of winners from this weekend's Club Championship has been provided below.

MGA PURPLE & GOLD TOURNAMENT RESULTS Thanks to all of our players for participating in this year's MGA Purple & Gold Tournament. It was our biggest field of members ever for the event and despite Sundays poor weather it was a great event for all with good competition, good food, and most importantly great camaraderie. The Gold Team held a two point lead (6 to 4) beginning play today, but with heavy rain looming in the forecast, our captain's agreed that any match not playing at least 9 holes would be halved every match was extremely important!! Unfortunately the weather just would not cooperate, and only 8 total matches reached that 9 hole mark. The Purple Team won four of those matches, the Gold Team won one, and one match was halved. The remaining matches on the course were all halved, giving the Purple Team 11.5 points on the day to the Gold Team's 8.5 points, for 15.5 to 14.5 victory for the Purple Team. A big round of applause to all who gave it every effort to play even as the conditions went from bad to worse to unplayable! Despite the wet ending, it was a great weekend for one of our favorite events of the year! Here are the Purple Team Champions! Jeff Gibson (Captain), Rob Burleson (Vice-Captain), Martin Anderson, Micah Ball, JW Blair, Jeff Blick, Will Brinson, Leo Corbin, Max Fisher. TEE IT UP & TURF TALK GREETINGS BVCC MEMBERS Cooler temperatures are here and preparations are being made for winter. Course fertilization has been accomplished to aid in root development and nutritional storage. The greens have had applications of chemicals to help control Spring Dead Spot disease and we are continuing to add root development fertilizers. The course in general is taking shape quite well although, mowing heights are quickly being raised in preparation for dormancy. Weed control on the course has been a top priority lately and I am happy to say we have been able to kill virtually all weeds in play that were unsightly and possibly becoming a playability issue. Outer areas such as tree lines and pine straw beds are ongoing and being evaluated weekly. Preparing for our next round of winter weeds is being accomplished now by applying a preemergence herbicide to the tees, fairways, collars, approaches and rough. We are taking a new approach to the creek area on number nine. Having cut down the tall weeds, we will stay on a routine of chemical applications that are approved and compliant with aquatic regulations. This will ensure the area presents a maintained appearance and will not grow to heights of the past. Our Fall ryegrass seeding has been done and soon this grass will be germinating. In listening to some of your suggestions, you will begin to see a few trees being removed from the course. One notable, is the pine tree behind the fairway bunker on seven. We will soon be back on track with identifying and completing projects that will improve the course and infrastructure. Correcting drainage and erosion issues are on the top of the list so far. I thank you for your support and comments. We look forward to this winter and working to make BVCC number one in the area. As always, please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns about your course. Owen Legg Brook Valley Superintendant

COOKIE OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER COOKIE “Bourbon Chocolate Sugar Cookies” Bruce McIntosh – Country Club of Asheville Ingredients: 1 ¾ Cup All-Purpose Flour ¾ Cup Dutch Process Cocoa Powder, sifted ½ TSP Baking Soda ¼ TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Kosher Salt ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature ½ Cup (8 tablespoons) Unflavored Vegetable Shortening, room temperature 1 Cup Granulated Sugar ¾ Cup Packed Light Brown Sugar 1 Large Egg 1 Large Egg Yolk 3 TBSP Bourbon (optional, replace with 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract) 3 OZ. grated or very finely chopped dark or Semisweet Chocolate 1 Cup Raw/Turbinado Sugar 2 TSP Bourbon Directions: Preheat oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, cream butter until no longer chunky. Add shortening and beat on medium-high speed until smooth and uniformly mixed. Add sugar and brown sugar and beat for 1 to 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Add egg and egg yolk, and mix until incorporated; scrape down the sides of the bowl and the beater as necessary. Slowly mix in bourbon. Add dry ingredients in two additions, mixing on low speed until just incorporated. Mix in finely chopped chocolate. If your dough is particularly soft you can refrigerate it for 10 to 15 minutes or so to make it easier to roll. To make bourbon sugar, combine raw sugar and 2 teaspoons bourbon in a pint-sized mason jar. Screw on lid and shake the heck out of it, until sugar is evenly moistened and looks something like wet sand. Pour into a shallow bowl or dish. Scoop dough into 1 3/4-inch balls (the size of a medium cookie scoop). Roll into a smooth ball, then roll into bourbon sugar until evenly coated (the moist sugar will clump, but that’s the effect we’re going for!)Arrange on parchment lined cookie sheets leaving approximately 2 inches of space between cookies. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until cookies have settled into shallow domes. They will be set around the edges but still puffed in the middle (they will flatten when they cool). Let cool on pan for 10 minutes, then transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. To store, spread any leftover bourbon sugar in the bottom of an airtight storage container; arrange cookies in layers on top and tightly cover. Cookies will keep at room temperature for up to 5 days.
DECEMBER COOKIE Holiday Meringue Cookie Chris Shaw – Holston Hills Country Club Yield: 4 dozen Ingredients: 4 Each Egg White ½ TSP Cream of Tartar Pinch of Salt 1 Cup of Granulated Sugar (Superfine)
Directions: Preheat oven to 225° F. Mix egg whites with whip attachment in mixer until frothy. Add Cream of Tartar and salt. Continue whipping until soft peaks form. While mixer is on low speed, slowly add sugar 1 tablespoon at a time until it has dissolved and stiff peaks are formed. Using a star tip in a piping bag, pipe out the meringue onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet, spaced 2 inches apart. Bake for 45 min and then turn off the oven. Without opening the door, let cookies stand in oven for 1 hour. Store in air tight container.
