GENERAL MANAGER’S CORNER
A note from your General Manager,
After a summer of somewhat mercurial weather, with bouts of draught, long periods of rain, and mostly high temperatures, we have now been blessed with a beautiful autumn What a great time to be at the club! Whether you are dining out on the back patio, playing on the courts, or swinging a club on the course, the weather has been simply delightful
We have had a lot of fun this autumn with golf tournaments, fall festival, specialty dinners, and fun food and golf combination events. Thank you to everyone who participated The success of these events will inform our planning for the future
Speaking of planning for the future, we have already entered club social events on the calendar through June of 2025 You may not be able to sign up for most of them until we get closer to the date of the event, but you can mark your calendars and make plans to attend We also have some fun plans for the upcoming holidays Be sure to watch your weekly happenings emails for event promotions and sign-up windows
Taking a look around the clubhouse, we are working on a few areas and enhancing the landscaping. Some areas have become overgrown, or existing plant material has run its course Please bear with us as some of these changes may look unsightly for a short time We will need to remove some existing plants before we can add new plantings
For all the golfing members, you may have noticed quicker green speeds this fall As part of our capital expenditure in 2024 we allotted funding for greens covers This addition helps us keep our greens protected over the winter without raising the height of cut on greens Keeping the greens faster in the fall will also reduce the number of times we need to roll greens throughout the winter months The less we roll, the better our greens collars will look in the spring Keeping traffic off the dormant turf is very important. Having greens covers is a win, win, win situation. The only downside will be when covers need to be put on. If the high temperature for the day stays below 32°F we will likely close the afternoon before that cold day. We will keep greens covers on until the high for the day exceeds freezing Typically, down east, we don’t see many consecutive days with highs below freezing Hopefully you will not be inconvenienced by greens covers very often
Some other work you will notice on the course this winter we are calling “The Great Leveling” So many of our irrigation heads around the course are below grade This not only creates a hazard for anyone walking near them, but also decreases the performance of the head We are making a concentrated effort to get all of our irrigation heads raised and leveled
Overall, this winter may bring improvements that are not as visible as a bunker renovation. We need some extensive and expensive repairs to our irrigation pump station The dam needs some minor work, and our irrigation system also needs some troubleshooting in certain areas This work is necessary, sometimes costly, but often not as noticeable to the average golfer It may take funding away from other needed projects, but fortunately we will be able to make the investment in these much-needed repairs A good way to look at it might be to call it a year of infrastructure investment It may not be flashy, but it helps us keep the course operating for years to come
McConnell Golf is dedicated to keeping Brook Valley positioned as the best private club value in Greenville. We have a great staff, both in the clubhouse and on the course, and we are all here to serve you. If there is a way we can make your experience better, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We enjoy speaking with members, welcome feedback, and want to make Brook Valley the best it can be every day
Sincerely,
Buckley Brockmann General Manager/Golf Course Superintendent
