Our Brook Valley Junior Interclub Team once again had a very successful 2020 summer. With a lot of uncertainty and many modifications, we were able to pull off a season that was both safe and fun for all. Thank you to all the juniors that participated this year in the Eastern NC Junior Golf League, we were all fortunate to have been able to get out and compete against neighboring clubs. The Brook Valley team was victorious in every match played this season. Four of our juniors qualified for an end of the year individual finale which was held at the Emerald Golf Club in New Bern. All of them played some great golf! A recognition goes out to Lake Williams for winning his age group and shooting the low score of the tournament! Here are our juniors that qualified and results: Boys 14-15: Will Guidry - 45 (4th) Boys 12-13: Lake Williams - 32 (1st) Boys 11 & Under: Holden Carson - 41 (3rd) Girls 12-13: Carys Carson - 39 (2nd)

2020 MEMBER-MEMBER TOURNAMENT RESULTS CONGRATULATIONS TO TODD MITCHUM & GREG HARDISON, your 2020 Member-Member Champions! The 2020 Brook Valley MemberMember Tournament is officially complete and what an amazing weekend of fellowship and championship golf we had! Each year in our Member-Member, the Overall Champions have the lowest combined scores from both the Gross and Net Divisions of the entire field. Each team participating has a chance to compete! Starting play in our second round several teams had a chance at winning the overall title, however with fantastic play over the closing holes the team of Todd Mitchum and Greg Hardison pulled away from the field to finish a total of 21 under par! Andrew Sapp and Shawn Heinchon finished second overall at 15 under par with Brad Garner and Kevin Stallings finishing overall third at 14 under. It was a great finish to a fantastic event, congratulations to all on their great play and a great weekend. Here are the remaining overall Flight Winners in both the Gross and Net Divisions. Full results including winners of each day of Net Play can be found by visiting the Member-Member Portal. Thanks to all of our members that participated and a big round of applause to the staff for their hard work on putting together a special event!

The Top Twenty will qualify to participate in the annual Shoot-Out competition to put a cap on the season! GREETINGS BVCC MEMBERS 2020 has certainly presented us with many challenges this year. From extremely dry weather to incredibly wet weather, throw in a hurricane and not to mention the Coronavirus, it has certainly been the year of the curve ball. Fortunately, from a golf course stand point conditions are finally starting to take shape. We have recently been able to increase staff levels which has allowed us to spend time on areas in need of attention. We still have a ways to go, but we are starting to get the course back up to par with where it needs to be. Our Assistant Ben, a revamped crew, and myself are working hard to improve all areas on the course. One notable area to mention is the rough, which if you have played lately you know has been longer (and tougher) than normal. A new rough mower was ordered earlier this year. Unfortunately the impact of the Coronavirus has slowed down its manufacturing and arrival. However we do expect the new mower to arrive soon and be ready to go! Another area of attention we intend on catching up on is the bunkers. Added staff will be dedicated to bunker maintenance to help with more consistent weeding and raking which will lend to the bunker maintenance expectations Brook Valley deserves. Also, the outer areas of the course and pine straw beds are in the process of being sprayed and property borders cleaned up. Our goal is to continue to improve and hope this virus and storms don’t impact us anymore this year. We are thankful for all of you and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your course. Thank you. Owen Legg Brook Valley Superintendant

MCCONNELL GOLF JIM HERMAN WINS THIRD TITLE AT WYNDHAM; MOVES FROM 192ND TO 54TH IN FEDEXCUP POINTS
Herman had two birdies and an eagle — from 59 feet — on his first five holes to catch up to Kim. Then, trailing Horschel by a stroke, Herman stuck his approach to No. 17 to just over 3 feet for a birdie. to reach 21 under. He gained the lead when Horschel missed a 12-footer for par on 16.
Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his third PGA TOUR title and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, shooting a 7under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel. Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole. The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259. Horschel closed with a 65. He had a final chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup. Herman got into the FedExCup Playoffs, jumping from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 spots. He hoisted a trophy for the second straight season and third time since 2017. Si Woo Kim, the third-round leader, had a 70 to tie for third at 18 under with Kevin Kisner (64), Webb Simpson (65) and Doc Redman (68).
It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut. He followed that up with a careerlow 61 on Saturday to get into striking distance before taking the victory. Horschel looked as if he was the one to rally as he moved from three behind Kim to the lead with a birdie-eagle- birdie run on the front nine while Kim struggled with a double bogey and a bogey over his first eight holes. Kim was a birdie machine with 21 birdies and a hole in one the first three rounds. But he stumbled out of the gate and a pair of bad drives cost him his first win since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017. He drove right into a hazzard of thick grass and, despite six people searching, could not find his shot. Kim made double bogey to fall from the top. Two holes later, Kim would up near a cart path bridge for a bogey to fall four shots off the lead.
FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN PROGRAM As the host for many charities and donors to numerous others, McConnell Golf is excited to contribute and engage through our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. Through a strong and supportive effort made by our collective membership and staff, we strive to become a driving force in the local community where our clubs reside. Aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily, we have aligned ourselves with a variety of organizations and various methods of giving back. This program is designed with all age groups in mind so that it will be a learning tool for our youth, a team building activity for our staff, and a friendship building platform to strengthen our connection with our membership. Recently, the Country Club of Asheville raised over $2,800 for United Way School Supply Drive. Providence Country Club is also taking part in supporting our local schools with a supply drive sponsored by Classroom Central. Way to go team and thank you to all who contributed! COOKIE OF THE MONTH
SEPTEMBER COOKIE “Pecan-Chocolate Chip Delights” James R. Patterson III – Sedgefield Country Club
Ingredients: 1 Cup Unsalted Butter, softened 1 Cup Brown Sugar, packed 1 Large Egg 1 TSP Salt 1 ¼ Cups Quick Cooking Oats 1 ¼ Cups Lightly Crushed Cornflakes ¾ Cup of Mini Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Vegetable Oil 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 TSP Vanilla 3 ½ Cups All-Purpose Flour ¾ Cup Chopped Pecans
Directions: Note: this dough requires chilling. Cream butter and sugars in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Cream until light and fluffy. You can also use a hand mixer. Add oil and stir until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mix until smooth, then stir in the salt and baking soda. Mix in oats and flour until just mixed. Stir in chocolate chips, pecans and cornflakes. Scoop 2 tablespoon balls of cookie dough onto a cookie sheet covered in wax or parchment paper. No need to spread the balls out, you’re just going to chill them. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least one hour. (If you chill longer than 4 hours you may need to let them warm up a few minutes on the counter before baking.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silpat baking mats. Place cookies 2” apart on prepared cookie sheets. Lightly press down with the palm of your hand. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the bottoms just start to turn golden brown. Cool at least 5 minutes on cookie sheet before removing to rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
OCTOBER COOKIE “Gluten-Free Cornmeal Thumbprint Cookies” Michael Monahan – Grande Dunes Yield: 3 dozen “Bite sized” cookies A startling number of people these days are reporting gluten sensitivities, and gluten-free baking has become a “subset” of baking. I love the flavor and texture of these tender gluten-free cornmeal-based cookies, and the way the raspberry flavor complements the corn. Ingredients: 1 ½ Cups All-Purpose Gluten-Free Rice Flour 1 Cup Yellow Cornmeal 1 TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Table Salt ¾ Cup Firmly Packed Light-Brown Sugar 2 Large Eggs 1 TSP Vanilla Extract ½ Cup Seedless Raspberry Preserves (or jelly of your choice) 1 ¾ sticks Unsalted Butter, softened, plus more for pans Directions: Preheat your oven to 350° and set 2 racks to the middle positions, with space in between. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (or grease lightly with butter). In a medium-size bowl, whisk together the rice flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. Using a standing or handheld mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar in a large bowl until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat. Add the dry ingredients and beat until smooth. Portion the dough into 1inch balls, and arrange them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Press each with your thumb; then fill each depression with a teaspoon of raspberry jam. Bake until just barely golden brown on the bottom, 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through.
