TURF TALK

This summer has been an interesting one for life on the golf course We started with a scorching draught in June, which continued into early July Our irrigation system was absolutely put to the test Then about the middle of July someone turned on nature’s faucet, and it felt like we stayed wet all the way through most of August.

Tropical storm Debby was part of the rain we recorded in August. After dropping over 9” of rain in 10 days, the effects were palpable. Not only did she leave us with an unbelievably wet golf course, Debby also created near perfect conditions for the hatch of fall army worm eggs The worms were worse this year than we have ever seen They were so plentiful, when it rained enough to flood we saw them floating on top of the water Our greens were covered with them, our fairways and tees were effected, but what they loved best was the rough To the casual observer, it might look like some areas of the rough were scalped, or maybe draught stressed The truth is, fall army worms literally ate the green leaf blades off of the Bermuda grass. They don’t eat zoysia grass, centipede grass, or weeds. Good lush Bermuda grass though, that is like an all you can eat buffet! It is staggering how much damage they can do in 48 hours. We did spray the course to eradicate the little critters and the course is well on its way to a full recovery. The effects of the worm attack, while unsightly, was only temporary

Another direct effect of plentiful areas of standing water is mosquito egg hatch Mosquitos are now out in full force Bring that bug spray when you play, but remember, apply it on the cart path The propellants in most bug sprays can burn turf

It won’t be long and we will be starting our annual battle with fall foliage. The amount of foliage on our trees is directly correlated to the amount of rainfall we see in the summer months. It stands to reason we will see an active, and likely colorful autumn.

Enjoy the course We hope to see you out there soon!

Yours in turf,

COOKIE OF THE MONTH: SWEET TEA SHORTBREAD COOKIE RECIPE BY ISAAC SPENCER, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT OLD NORTH STATE CLUB

There’s nothing better than sitting on the front porch in the late summer months enjoying a mason jar of sweet tea and sharing a tin of shortbread cookies.
