FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER OF OPERATIONS Spring has sprung — and the bunkers are done! Gosh, I know how corny that sounds, but we are so pleased with the completion of the bunkers and just how smooth the process went. We started the renovation on December 2nd and had a 90day window for completion. Yet, we finished the project on February 8th, that was 3 weeks earlier than anticipated and from start to finish we were done in 68 days! Please read Ryan’s article on page 10 for his thoughts and an in-depth review of the bunker renovation. The bunkers look great and we are very happy with the renovation; we hope you are just as pleased. March and April are great months to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors here in the South. We have many activities for you to enjoy at the Club, be sure to always check the member web for up-to-date information regarding club events and keep an eye on the weekly happenings emails you receive. These two months have some fun and exciting golf days for your participation. Check out page 8 to read all the news Brian has about these upcoming tournaments and how to join in the fun for the Men’s Invitational, the Master Par 3 Tournament and much more. And just like the springtime season has change and renewal, we too are going through some changes. Mid-March we will begin accepting outside play through golf-package providers, but we will still maintain our efforts of treating you the member with priority. At the Members Club we respect and appreciate our relationship with you, and we appreciate your support of the Club. Whether you are golfing, dining, or attending a social event, we look forward to seeing all of you at the Members Club. As always, if you have any questions or want to discuss an issue, my office door is always open.

SPECIAL DINING EVENTS FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR’S UPDATE We are quickly reaching a point where more members have wine lockers than don’t at Grande Dunes Members Club, with new members signing up for them at the same time that they are joining! And why not? They offer unique additional value to your membership. Each one holds twelve bottles, so you can keep a variety of your favorite bottles and enjoy them corkage-free while visiting the Club. Additionally, we can stock it for you, often with deals over 50% less than you might purchase those wines at local shops. And then there are our GrapeNight events – arguably one of the most fun social events here at the Club. Locker holders have early registration rights to these often sold out events, and receive a 15% discount on the evening. Bottom line - if you drink wine and don’t have a locker……you probably should. Reach out to me at eric.french@grandedunes.com and I’ll get you set up! Speaking of wine (as I am prone to do!) our management team recently had the opportunity to attend several days of education at a McConnell Golf retreat in Greensboro. As a part of our education we had a presentation from J. Lohr Estates from Paso Robles, California. The wines were phenomenal! So much so that we are currently featuring their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The "Seven Oaks" 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a Wine Enthusiast 90. This delicious bottle starts off with robust aromas of cherry, sweet oak and mint. Polished but firm tannins uphold dark fruit, baking spice and a pinch of peppery herbs on the well-rounded, satisfying palate. Their "Riverstone" 2018 Chardonnay is not yet rated, but received a WE 90 for their 2017 vintage. The flavors are very soft with ripe pear, tangelo citrus and vanilla toastiness, producing layers of complexity with a silky balance of fresh fruit acidity and palate-weight. Come by the bar for a taste, stay for a glass!

UPCOMING GOLF EVENTS Golf Tip: Are you struggling to find extra distance off the tee? Understanding how to change your ball flight is necessary to finding those couple extra yards. The easiest way to do so is to learn how to shape the ball right to left (for a right-handed golfer). Hitting a draw can be simple when done correct. Follow these 4 Steps to More Distance: 1. First step would be to strengthen your grip. What you want to see is at least three knuckles or the logo of your glove on your left hand. This will allow for more forearm release through your shot. 2. Next, position your body to the right of your target with a slightly more forward ball position. 3. Flare your trail foot slightly to help increase your turn on your takeaway. Not only will this allow you to make a bigger turn, but it will also help you take the golf club on a more inside path, which in turn allows you to swing more into the ball. 4. Finally, feel your arms swing past your body while you are releasing the golf club. When done correctly, this will allow you to curve the ball back to the left and get that increase in distance you have been searching for.

Rate Changes Please be advised that effective March 15, 2020, The Grande Dunes Members Club will implement the following Rate Changes:

18-hole cart fee 18-hole Accompanied Guest Rate 18-hole Family Guest Rate

Titleist and Callaway are once again running a “Buy three dozen personalized golf balls, get one dozen for FREE” promotion. You don’t want to pass up this free $50.00 valued gift. All golf ball orders require an imprint on the ball; you can even customize with your own personal ball number. We will even sweeten the pot this year and allow you to place two orders! That’s $100.00 in free golf balls. The first order will ship in March or April and we will hold and store the second order until June 1st. Two separate imprints are required. We will bill your account for the first order in March and the second order will be due in June. Please contact the Golf Shop to place your order. SOMETHING TO CONSIDER Typically have a tough time writing my portion of the newsletter, really not my forte, much more comfortable running a shovel or cutting some grass. However, I thought I would take this opportunity to give my thoughts on the bunker renovation and drainage work. Our bunker renovation work began on December 2, 2019 and was slated for completion by early to mid-March 2020. As you already know the project finished well ahead of schedule and the course was fully open by early February. We modeled our work after the two refurbished bunkers at the shortgame area, as these bunkers were renovated more than 2 years ago and have held up nicely. Decision was made to tackle the back nine first due to a couple of existing golf events, we felt that the least amount of disruption would be experienced on back nine fairway bunkers. Overall the process was fairly simple, step one was removal of existing sand and drainage. Contaminated sand was then utilized in the sand bag process (primarily in areas with new features), both filling the bags and initial backfill in reduced areas. Once this work was complete the process of installing the Chamber drainage system began, these drains can handle upwards of 100” of water a minute. Essentially these drains are placed into an 18” wide/deep newly dug cavity and wrapped with filter fabric, all chamber lines were then backfilled with a course sand and tamped. BV Hedrick Premium Bunker sand was then added into bunker at a depth of 7” and plate tamped to a 6” finish. In all we reduced our total bunkering by 34%, ultimately reducing mostly out of play areas of bunkering. We tried to focus on eliminations in areas that affected higher handicap players while keeping the overall appearance of the course fairly similar. It was important to keep the overall look of the course, Craig Schreiner (original golf course architect here at Members Club) did all of the shaping during our renovation and oversaw entire project. Craig has always loved the way the course shadowed late in the day and it was extremely important to him that we didn’t lose that. We couldn’t be happier with the finished product and we hope you feel the same way. With each side of the course being closed during the project we decided that it was time to tackle some much needed drainage work in the fairways. We have known for some time that drainage would enhance the playability of the golf course during wet periods. With this in mind we attempted to install drainage in the wettest areas of our worst fairways. Overall we laid close to 2000 linear foot of drainage this winter on 11, 14, 17, 7, 5 and area near green tee on 2. Grueling work for our staff, but seems to be helping to dry out these areas. Our drainage work will continue throughout the spring and summer when time permits. We are now gearing up for this summer’s greens renovation. Applications to kill the bentgrass/Bermuda will begin as early as mid-April. Major work begins day after Memorial Day. Overall we will be recapturing close to 27,000 square feet during the project, you may have already seen the red dots around the greens. These red dots mark the outer edge of the greens mix or the original greens surface, these areas will once again be pinable green surface. Greens are being converted from L-93 Bentgrass to Tifeagle Ultradwarf Bermudagrass. More on this process to come and as always please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
