FROM THE CLUB & MEMBERSHIP FROM DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

A NOTE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

Dear Member,

Welcome November/December! Can you believe the holidays are just around the corner? Even with the uncertainty all around us 2020 really has been a fast year.

With the arrival of November, we welcome the fall season, lower humidity, and cooler temperatures. We also recognize November as the month of Thanksgiving. As unusual as this year has been, we are very fortunate to have the club to come to and enjoy some sense of normalcy and that is something to be very thankful for.

November is a very festive month and we are excited to offer some social events that we are hopeful you will participate in. The Grande Dunes Members Club opened in 2005. On November 14th we will celebrate 15 years of existence. The Anniversary party will run from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. using our short game area and practice putting green. We will have plenty of food and spirits along with a lighted putting contest for any and all to participate. We hope that you have the opportunity to come out and celebrate with us. To sign up for our 15th Anniversary Party or any of our other events, please go to the calendar on our Grande Dunes Members Club’s website. The expression, re-invent, re-ignite, and re-evaluate is something that we have all faced since mid-March 2020. Typical events have reformed, so we need to re-invent as social distancing has altered everything. As we prepare for 2021 we will continue to work within this spirit. We anticipate that many of the challenges that we have faced this past year, relative to COVID-19, will continue well into 2021.

Let’s make this a wonderful time to spend with family, friends, and of course lots of activities and gatherings to keep us all busy. If you are looking for a unique gift idea for a friend or loved ones. Give the gift of Membership to the Members club! Contact me for the special incentives that we have from now to the end of the year! It’s a great gift. It’s easy and affordable and can create a lifetime of memories with family and friends. Invest in the success of others. Because when you help someone up a mountain, you'll find yourself close to the summit too. Also, if you have a special occasion coming up or know someone who does, please contact Vasilika at Vasilika.xhani@grandedunes.com. She is terrific in assisting your special day. You do not have to be a member to host a wedding, engagement party, rehearsal dinner, baby shower, holiday party, etc. We would love to host your next event here at The Members Club.

Pamela Evans, Membership Director pevans@grandedunes.com

With that said, we are currently working on our Golf and Social events calendars for 2021. We will continue to offer our traditional events as well as introducing some new events as well. In regards to golf, changing from bent grass greens to a more durable ultrawarf Bermuda grass, we are now afforded the opportunity to have events throughout the year, where in years past, we may have avoided many dates due to the stress on the bent grass greens in the summer time. We will be announcing our Golf Tournament and Social Calendars in our next newsletter scheduled for January 1st. We will continue to take Covid-19 very seriously. As our temperature starts to cool down and outdoor dining begins to slow down, rest assured we will follow all protocol to make sure we are providing the safest environment as our members begin to dine indoors more often. We are purchasing additional heaters and our plans are to use the Veranda throughout the entire year. Finally, as we head into the holiday season, I hope that – despite an incredibly forgettable year – we remember that we have so much to be thankful for. We look forward to seeing you around the club and if there is anything my staff or I can do for you, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Brian Vest, Director of Operations Brian.Vest@GrandeDunes.com

There will be three answers revealed, if the teams match any of the three, they get points. MC FOOD & BEVERAGES HAPPENINGS A Message from Mike To Our Members: The past month has been a wonderful transition for myself and my family. The feedback and direction from you, the members, have really made me feel that this professional change was the best one that I could have made. In just the short time that Chef Mike Monahan and I have worked together, we developed a great relationship that lead to very successful events, up to and including, the Member Guest Tournament. As Chef Mike moves on from this location, I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. With Chef Mike Marques coming back to the Grande Dunes, already I can see that him and I will be working as a team to ensure that Food & Beverage is a large part of our social activities. I feel like with the teams that we have around us, we will be able to really make a positive impact on the club. With the holiday season and 2021 just around the corner, I am excited with what the future has to hold for all of us. I look forward to working for you all and cannot wait to show you what are team is capable of.

TEE IT UP

GOLF NEWS I 2020 has been filled with changes and uncertainties. We have been learning how to alter the way we live our daily lives to changes around the club. Fortunately for the club, our Director of Golf, Brian Vest, has accepted a new position inside the club and will now operate as our Club Manager and Director of Operations. The entire Golf Operations and Membership could not be happier to follow his lead and guidance. With Brian’s advancement, Joe De Maio will now serve as the Club’s Head Golf Professional. Alongside Joe will be PGA Associate, Mike Gemmer, as well as, PGA/PGM Interns Anthony DeFrank, Nick Korns, and Matt Duenas whol assist Joe with day-to-day operations in the Golf Shop. If you have not met any of the new faces around the golf shop, stop by and we will introduce you. This year has been far from traditional; however, we were able to hold two of our longest running team events to date. Our first major golf tournament after reopening was our Member/Member. This year we saw Bobby Smith & Robert Zieser and Jackie Beck & Sally Thomas capturing the Gross Titles in their respective divisions.

In the Net Division, Val VanDeventer & David Barr and Maureen Ralph & Mary Schaeffer conquered their divisions and earned this year’s top prize as 2020 Member/Member Champions.

TEE IT UP GOLF NEWS This October, we were able to keep to tradition and host our annual Member/Guest Golf Tournament. This was our fifteenth edition of the event and we had first time winners in both the men’s and ladies’ divisions. The mother-daughter team of Michele & Nicole Peters won the Ladies Net Division, meanwhile Beth Coldwell & Suzanne Moro triumphed in the Gross Division to capture their third trophy as a team. The Men’s Division saw two first time pairs winning the Net and Gross Championships. Jason Stroupe & Frank Starace lifted the Gross trophy, while Edwin Boyd & Greg Lee raised the crystal for the Net Championship.

Our last major of the year will be in November, when we host our yearly Club Championship. Our annual tournament to crown the best golfer at the Club will be held on November 7th and 8th. We are looking forward to this year’s competition and are hoping for record turnouts. Over the last several weeks we have started bringing in some new merchandise. We have some new apparel from Straight Down, Turtleson, and Fairway & Greene. Stop by and take a look at what we have coming in. With it being outerwear season, Footjoy will be stocking our golf shop with new looks for 2020 and 2021.

As the weather begins to change and the days become shorter, we wanted to pass along updated golf shop and practice range hours. The Golf Shop will be open Tuesday through Sunday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The practice range will be available Tuesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. until dark, and will be open on Sunday’s from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Lastly, if any member has interest in adding their golf clubs to bag storage or to use one of our lockers, please let us know as soon as possible so we can add you to the billing cycle for 2020-2021.

FROM THE GREEN & MCCONNELL GOLF

“It’s important to understand that Ultradwarf Bermudagrass greens require more disruption to achieve better playing conditions and we are still figuring things out. During the growing season we will probably verticut at least every other week and topdress at least once a week. Ultradwarf Bermuda’s are active thatch producers and will get puffy or soft without constant removal of material and applications of sand. We are still working on a few trouble spots out there and have been forced to treat them differently, but are hopeful that we can improve these areas over the next couple of months.”

The above was included in our last newsletter and I thought that it was important to include it again as it still stands true. As we proceed into the fall it will no longer be advisable for us to be as aggressive with the greens. In fact, we begin to take the opposite approach to management. Winter hardiness becomes our main concern. With this in mind we gradually begin raising the height of cut. Believe it or not, minor adjustments in HOC have huge impacts of winter hardiness of Ultradwarfs. Unfortunately you can expect to see some slower green speeds during this transition. It is also important to begin this process before nighttime temps begin to drop into the 50’s, ultimately we will be raising our HOC from .125” up to .170”. Speeds will return once the greens stop growing for the year. It may also become necessary to cover greens at some point if temperatures under 25 are anticipated for an extended period of time. In the event of freezing conditions you should expect to see us watering greens in advance of these freezing temperatures. This increases soil moisture content and help support warmer soil temperatures. This is done in advance of covering the greens. We have also decided against the overseeding of the golf course again this year. This is in no way a cost savings for the club. In fact it will cost just as much to paint as it would to overseed the shortcut. This decision was made in large part to avoid overseeding up and around the new greens. Our goal is to keep the greens and their surrounds clean as possible. Brian and I discussed a multitude of options for winter color, but in the end we decided to paint shortcut this year, with the exception of tees as they will be overseeded. This was not an easy decision but some of the benefits were realized last winter without overseed. We experienced far dryer playing conditions throughout the fall and winter. This was a direct result of less saturated conditions during the germination period. It is impossible to germinate ryegrass without lots of water and this has a negative effect on playability for a multiple week period. Saturated conditions often linger post germination as it does not take much rain or irrigation to rewet course, again having a negative impact on play. The only real benefit to overseeding is winter color, in fact, overseeded fairways do not typically look and play great until early spring and we traditionally begin our removal process by early April in order to stimulate Bermudagrass growth. Paint, on the other hand, has many benefits such as reduction in water usage, no impact on play, instant gratification (should be able to paint all shortcut in 1 -2 days), no need for frost delays, ability to use different herbicides for Poa control, and earlier spring greenup. Paint typically raises temperatures within the turf canopy 5 – 8 degrees. This causes earlier spring greenup of Bermuda and an overall healthier stand of turf. Painting turf has come a long way over the past decade. Many of the top clubs throughout the country have turned to painting before televised events to ensure HD quality and most sports are also now painting their fields for the same reason. FROM THE KITCHEN

Hello Grande Dunes Members, I hope that you and your families are all healthy and safe in these extraordinary times. I am happy to say that we are slowly and cautiously opening your club as we embrace the “new normal”. We do this with the safety of you, your family, your guests and the staff’s safety as priority number one. It is with a heavy heart that I write this note. As I have decided to move back home to Raleigh NC. Where I will be close to my family. It has been an honor to serve as Executive Chef here at Grande Dunes and will miss you, the members and also the staff. I consider my self blessed to have developed some truly great relationships here in Myrtle Beach. I will continue to serve as Executive Chef through November as Chef Mike Marques re-acquaints himself as the new Executive Chef of Grande Dunes. Please feel free contact me for any reason during this time, and I wish the best to all of you and your families!
