LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP Dear Holston Hills Country Club Members, This letter is being written in the middle of April. At this time we continue to get daily changes to the current situation with regards to the COVID-19 virus and how it affects the Club’s operations. Each day we hear from the President, or both Mayors, or the Governor, or the Health Department and some days we hear from all of the above. It’s a crazy time for sure and we just continue to pray for the overall health and wellbeing of all our members and families. We are facing a tough stretch right now. Each report we read conflicts with the report we read a few minutes ago or the day before. As a business we are being forced to make some very difficult decisions with regards to staffing and the reduction of services to keep both our staff and our members safe. Who knows when we will get back to some sense of normalcy. What is a true blessing is to see the response of our staff and the reaction of our members. It is truly incredible an enlightening. Our staff has been asked to work in different areas than normal. Not one person has said “that’s not my job.” They simply ask how can I help and where do you need me? We have always scheduled by department. At this time we have implemented a club wide schedule with staff members working in different areas of the club. Our members deserve a huge thank you! We are overwhelmed by the member support of the club. At the time of this writing we have only lost 2 Social members and 1 Golfing member. It is truly a sign of how much you love Holston Hills Country Club. The tee sheets are busy each day despite being walking only (at the time of writing), many of you are supporting our curbside service, and most importantly you have stuck with us. It’s normal at times like this to take a look at your lives and even where you spend your money. Many people have to keep an eye on their cost of living and when the economy struggles or people have salaries reduced or even get laid off from work it’s always luxury spending that gets looked at first. So, how much do you love it? That is what makes the decision for you. If it is not necessary like your water bill or groceries how much do you love it? And do you feel that obligation to support it? You know your country club is struggling during times like this. No cart fee revenue, no dining room, no weddings or banquets, no golf outings…..a huge impact on important revenue streams that make your club healthy and vibrant and allow for amenities to be improved in the future. It’s a tough time for sure and it’s tough for you as well as you do not receive some of the services you have been accustomed to and have paid for since you joined. Well, you have showed how much you love your club. You have showed how much you support your club. You have showed how much you appreciate what McConnell Golf has done for your club since purchasing the club in December 2015. Thank you. You have made the decision to stay. You have made the decision to support whatever is available to you now knowing what is coming back soon. Soon we will be back to full service, the pool will open, the events will return, the dining room will open and everyone will be full of life, love, and laughter as we put all this behind us and reap the benefits of having stayed the course. The benefits of having supported your club and those that take care of it for you. We cannot thank you enough. We love our family of staff and members of Holston Hills and all of McConnell Golf. We are so thankful for all that everyone does to make Holston Hills one of the finest clubs in Tennessee and the entire Southeastern U.S. Thank you. Sincerely, Chris Dibble GM/Director of Golf

MEMBERSHIP HAPPY SPRING!! Just like that, it's the beginning of May and summer is right around the corner. By far this is my favorite time of the year. I love smelling grills fired up, working in the garden, riding bikes, playing soccer (with my boys) and going swimming. I hope everyone is doing well and ready for the upcoming summer season. Our HHCC team has been working hard behind the scenes to make the most out of everything that has been going on with the Covid-19 restrictions. Thank you to all of our dedicated members that has continued to support us over the past month and a half. We truly appreciate you and your family and miss seeing a lot of you out here. ~ Dara Jenkins, Membership Director

DINING EVENTS A LETTER FROM CHEF PATRICK What a crazy time it has been, but Spring is here. The Golf Course is turning green and pollen is abundant. Besides the pollen it’s one of my favorite times of the year. One thing that we have started at Holston Hills Country Club is a weekly Social Media Recipe Post. It started at the end of March and we have kept it going every Sunday. I wanted to still share some of our delicious recipes that we have developed or made here at the club that you can recreate at home. So please make sure to follow us on all of our social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. For this Month’s Newsletter I'm sharing our House BBQ rub seasoning. This seasoning goes on our Smoked BBQ Pork. It also goes great on chicken, pork chops and even sprinkled on roasted vegetables. It is sweet with a little bit of black pepper. I hope you enjoy this recipe and when you see me around the club, let me know if you tried this one or any of the ones from our social media posts. ~Patrick Budniewski, Executive Chef

Working in hospitality means our employees love to serve and connect with people. In these times, our staff misses these interactions dearly. The support we've received from the membership however, has been overwhelming. We just wanted to say, "Thank you." Thank you for every round of golf. Every to-go order. Every email, comment, like and share. We could not do what we love to do without you, and if anything, these trying times underscore the value of community. We are so very proud to serve you, and to have built a network of clubs with your support that sustains us all in good times and bad.

TURF TALK

COURSE UPDATE To say it has been a crazy Spring would definitely be an understatement. As businesses have been forced to closed and more and more people found themselves working from home, we have all been fortunate that the golf course has remained open. I have one of the best and safest offices you are ever going to find. A 100-acre office that is a living plant that needs constant attention and upkeep. No matter what is going on in the world around us the course will always be evolving. With the warm temperatures of Spring the course is waking up from its winter dormancy and the grass is growing! This year the Bermuda grass has transition a little earlier than in years past and we have very little winter turf injury to address. Our aerification was a success this past month with no damage being done to the putting surfaces. Each spring we try and be as aggressive as possible with aerification as the spring temperatures provide us with the best conditions for healing and optimal turf growth. This aggressive aerification in the Spring is the foundation for our season and always sets the tone for the rest of the year. With the earlier than normal warm temperatures we are already out mowing on a daily basis and it looks to be the start of another great golf season. Like everyone we have faced some challenges the past month but everyone on my staff continues to work together to provide the best playing conditions as possible on a daily basis. It has been great to see so many Members out walking and playing golf the past month. It just reminds me of how important the work my staff and I do each day is and how much the Membership enjoy being at the Club. 2020 Season Goals:

With each new year come new challenges and new goals to accomplish. We continue to improve each year and we are always pushing ourselves to improve the course and our daily operations. As we move into the summer season here are the top items that we have set as Goals for the 2020 season. Reduced height on grass bunker faces: We have always wanted to maintain the grass bunker faces at a shorter height of cut, but this does create a lot of maintain challenges. Tighter cut of grass in the aprons around the putting surfaces with less grain: We really want to promote ball roll in the aprons and create a firmer playing area around the putting surfaces. Firmer tighter cut teeing surfaces: Thru the season a lot of the tees get really puffy and grainy Greens irrigation heads leveling project: We want to raise and level the heads around the putting surfaces so perfectly flush with the ground. Continued Clubhouse Grounds improvements: The areas around the Clubhouse are the first impression we make on those who come to Holston Hills and we want to continue to work on improving the overall appearance of the Club. Continue to promote firm putting surfaces: The defense of our course is within the putting surfaces and we need to continue to promote the firmest possible putting surfaces. ~ Ryan Blair, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

FITNESS MAKING RESISTANCE TRAINING WORK FOR YOU Popular fitness culture glorifies intense resistance training; flipping tires, Olympic style bar lifts, heavy chains and bands, and extreme body weight movements are one every training company promo video and social media pages. Although these are great for top competing athletes, they only paint a small part of what resistance training is and who should be doing it. A strong example for everyone reading this would be the ability to squat. We use this movement to use the restroom, get in and out of vehicles and chairs. Removing this pattern due to pain or weakness limits our everyday lives greatly, even to the point of not allowing us to move at all. Performing a squat with resistance will improve the strength and stability of that movement helping to protect from injury and increase our ability to squat further. This does not have to be fast, heavy, or even with special machinery. Simply performing a squat with some sort of resistance will benefit you greatly. Therefore, identify what you are capable and comfortable with and start there. Seek out professionals like the PTI trainers in the gym to help you if you do not know where to start to help correct form and keep you safe.

PERSONAL TRAINING WITH PTI

BEST FOODS TO EAT FOR FAT LOSS

Tired of not seeing the results that you want in the gym? Perhaps your lifting program has become stale or you are just struggling with finding what works. Our certified personal trainers can help you reach the next level of your fitness journey with top notch training, up to date and relevant training techniques and programming, and catered routines that will meet your goals.

There is a large distinction between fat loss and weight loss. When losing weight an individual can simply move more by performing cardiovascular exercises like walking or running and pair that with eat less calories, creating a deficit; therefore, losing total body weight. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; less weight is a good thing. However, for individuals who cannot sustain this new level of movement may run into problems keeping their new weight once they return to a normal amount of movement. When the focus is on fat burning, another way to look at this is staying the same weight but shrinking the amount of fat on the body, it becomes easier to keep and sustain the bodies new shape.

Email us today to get started! HHCC@performancetraininginc.com Personal Training Pricing Fitness Assessment and Consultation: FREE 1 person / 60 minutes = $50 1 person/ 45 minutes= $37.50 1 person / 30 minutes = $30

THE TEE OFF

Why? The exercise used to target body fat is more anaerobic, mainly resistance training workouts that help sustain and promote muscles. Muscles require energy to exist even when they are not being used. This will increase your bodies calorie expenditure at rest, helping to keep your energy balance in a deficit even once you have reached your desired weight. Although this style of training can be frustrating for those of you who live and die by the scale, it is much easier to sustain long term health
