TURF TALK
COURSE UPDATE The winter months are always a challenge when working outside on the course. When I think of “winter” I always picture the holidays and a nice snowy Christmas morning. In reality it seems our coldest days always fall in the months of January and February making course setup a challenge. As I write this article we are just a few weeks away from our Spring aerification and the start of the 2021 golfing season. Everyone on staff has been busy preparing for the upcoming season and here are a few items we are currently working on and some that are right on the horizon. Our Spring Course Pre-emergent is underway, it has been a slow process to date with the cold temperatures. Each Spring we spray the entire course to prevent spring and summer weeds. Spring aerification is scheduled for March 8th and 9th this year and we will be following the same process we did last Spring. We will be punching the greens on Monday, followed by the Dryject process the following Tuesday. This multiple day process has really helped increase the firmness of the surfaces. Over the next few weeks we are going to be installing sod in some bare areas throughout the course. We are trying to use our time wisely by having this sod in place right before the season begins and warm Spring temps arrives. We our continuing to work on irrigation repairs, along with the raising the irrigation heads around the putting surfaces. We have been working hard to level any sunken head right next to the putting surfaces. Spring fertilization is scheduled for Monday April 19h this year. We will have Regal on property in their custom application truck spreading fertilizer over the entire property. We are working on adding a new tee box to the 2nd hole that we hope to have open late this Spring. We are going to be adding a new area of native grasses behind the 11th green to tie into the existing fields. This area will better hide the road while making the area blend together much more naturally. We are going to be working on the starters tent area with new landscaping and an improved starters tent area. Lastly we are heavily involved in preparing for the upcoming Korn Ferry Tour event. I am really looking forward to hosting the event and everyone on staff is excited. It will be a busy couple week for the Grounds Crew as we prepare and host the event. We have a lot of volunteers from local clubs going to be here all week, as well as staff members from other McConnell golf properties here for the week.
It is going to be a busy year for sure this year and everyone on my staff is looking forward to the Bermuda breaking dormancy and greening back up for the season. The return of warmer days is greatly anticipated and I am sure summer will be here before we know it. I look forward to seeing you out on the course. ~ Ryan Blair, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

FITNESS TIPS
PTI will be here through the end of March, 2021.
With Spring right around the corner, it’s a perfect time to rejuvenate your love for fitness and wellness. Here are some tips to jumpstart your new routines.
Contact Brian at 865.363.1161 or email at brod@performancetraininginc.com
Start in April Travis Fields will be offering the following small group class: BEGINNERS BOOT TUESDAYS & THUSDAYS I 6:30-7:30am LITT WEDNESDAYS I 6:00-7:00pm COMBO CLASS SATURDAY I 9:00-10:00am
If you want more information about any of the classes listed above, contact Travis Fields, Fitness & Tennis Director, at 865.523.4131 or email Tfields@holstonhills.com
Assess fitness level - Assessing your fitness level is key to
starting your new fitness routine. The assessment will help find muscle imbalances and weaknesses that may be negatively affecting workouts or everyday life. Make sure to book an assessment with a certified personal trainer that can guide you through a safe and effective assessment test.
Set goals - Set goals that are realistic and obtainable. Make sure you have short-, medium-, and long-term goals. Goals help keep you motivated and on track in your fitness journey.
Set a schedule - Set a schedule that aligns with your goals and
routines. If just starting back after time off, make sure to start slowly and work yourself back into a good routine. Don’t be too ambitious and start a workout program 7 days a week in order to get into shape quickly. This will lead to burnout and possible injury. Make sure to take rest days and let your body recover.
Nutrition is key - Make sure to stock up on healthy foods that
will help fuel your body. Make sure healthy foods are easily obtainable and readily available to eat. This will help offset the impulse to eat easy to prepare junk food. Visit local health food and farmer’s markets and try new healthy recipes to keep eating healthy and fun.
Vary workout routines -Vary workout routines to keep
yourself motivated and to keep your body challenged. The same routines all the time can lead to burnout, plateauing, and possible injury.
Buddy System - If possible, team up with a buddy during your
workouts. This will make workouts more fun, competitive, and keep each participant accountable.
Reward Yourself - Make sure to reward yourself for a job well done. Take time for yourself and book spa days, vacations, and trips to help lower the stress of everyday life. To book an assessment or workout contact: Travis Fields, USPTA, NASM Fitness and Tennis Director Email: Tfields@holstonhills.com Office: 865.523.4131

TENNIS & PICKLE BALL HHCC Pickleball Want to learn the fastest growing sport in the U.S.? Then come and give pickleball a try! Pickleball is a fun, social game for 2 to 4 players of all ages and ability levels. The game is very easy to learn and many players love the fun and competitive nature of it. Interested in giving pickleball a try, contact Travis Fields at Tfields@holstonhills.com or call 865.523.4131.
Pickleball Tips It’s important to move into the no volley zone or kitchen as quickly as possible. The team that moves to the kitchen has the ability to hit and defend a variety of shots. The vast majority of points in pickleball are won at the kitchen line.
HHCC Tennis From The Pro “Down the middle solves the riddle.” This is a great phrase to remember while playing doubles. If you are unsure of where to hit the ball during the match always remember to hit down the middle of your two opponents. Hitting down the middle often causes communication errors between your opponents leading to more errors. Utilizing this strategy will often open up secondary shots to the outside of the court when both opponents collapse to the middle. This tactic can be used successfully at all levels of tennis. ~ Travis Fields, Fitness & Tennis Director
Tennis Equipment Tips As the spring season approaches remember the importance of racquet restringing. During the course of play, string tension will drop from the original tension. This drop in tension will lead to a trampoline effect with the racquet causing the player to have more power then normal. This extra power may cause the player to hit long during matches. A good way to remember this is to restring your racquet at the beginning of spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons.
CARDIO TENNIS SATURDAYS I 10:00-11:00am $15 Heart pumping cardio for players of all ability levels in a fun but challenging class. Players will hit lots of balls in a face-paced music themed environment.
PICKLEBALL 101 SATURDAYS I 11:00-12:00pm $15 Each player will learn swing mechanics, basic strategy, scorekeeping and rules of the game. After completing this clinic, players will have knowledge and skills to play pickleball.
