TURF TALK - HHCC BUNKER PROJECT
work on the front nine I am also really looking forward to seeing Members playing from the new bunkers on the back So far I have been very pleased with the quality of bunker construction and happy to report we survived some major rain downpours without any bunker washing issues The pace of construction on the back nine was a little slower than what I was originally planning, but they for sure have picked up the pace the past few weeks More guys have been added to the construction crew allowing them to work on multiple steps of the projects at one time This has really helped speed up the process as everyone is more in a groove and moving like a team As we move to the front nine we are going to start at the furthest point away from my shop area working our way back to the building All of the materials we use for construction are delivered to the staging area by my building Normally we have 4-6 truckloads of concrete, 68 truckloads of sand, and 1-2 truck loads of sod coming in each week This creates a lot of activity with trucks coming and going daily
As play resumes out of the back nine bunkers please remember that we are still in the grow-in process. We are going to resume preparing the bunkers daily for play but the sand will take some time to settle and pack. We are also going to be trying out some different types of rakes and different methods for maintaining the bunkers. It is quite the change going from basically no sand and mud like we had before to the bunkers we have today. The sod faces are also going to take some time to totally grow and knit together. As we are moving into the Fall season, we are mowing all the newly sodded areas at a higher height of cut than normal to protect the grass from the upcoming winter season. Next Spring we will work at getting all of our
Our goal is to maintain the grass faces at a height where balls will not stay on a face but rather fall all the way into the bunkers. We also want to maintain the sand as firm as possible and do whatever we can to promote balls to chase away from the grass faces. As the sod is still tacking down and becoming established we are constantly watering the bunkers to promote growth and healing. Once the sod is established we will be better able to manage the moisture level in the sand.
Another unforeseen issue you will notice on the back nine bunker faces are dirt spots from Cicada Killers digging into the bunker faces. We actually went through this exact same problem the last time we worked on the bunkers and unfortunately it is just something we have to deal with for the time being. The Cicada Killers borrow deep into the new soft ground on the bunker faces to lay eggs. With the holes being so deep in the ground there is little you can do to control them from a pesticide application.
They are also considered by most to be a beneficial insect as they eat Cicadas For us, they are a big nuisance as they burrow and push dirt into our new bunker sand We are doing everything we can to manage the insects but they are a challenge
For now, I am just happy to be moving to the front nine with the end of the project not that far off in the distance The new bunkers are a major improvement and I look forward to having them all completed
