CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT YOUR CLUB MANAGER
A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
On behalf of McConnell Golf and The Water’s Edge staff, a special thank you to all the members who made 2021 a successful year. I cannot tell you enough how much your continued support means to the club. As always, your input is very important to us, so please let us know how we can make you club experience better. Thank you to our membership for their generous contributions to Employee Christmas Fund. It was greatly appreciated by the staff; they do a terrific job! I would like to recognize Barbara Beck, Kathy Green, Sue Elwell, Karen Reynolds, and Margi Coughlin who beautifully decorated the club for the holidays. Thank you for all your hard work. Looking back at 2021, we learned a great deal about McConnell Golf. McConnell Golf is all about the member experience and creating wonderful memories. Our golf course superintendent, Jeff Snyder has kept the golf course in great playing conditions despite his challenges through dog days of summer. Our member-guest was the highlight of the year, thanks to Ed Currin, his staff, and to Chef Michael Dontigney, Jodi Gourley, Brittany Horsley, Jennifer Moore, and the Food & Beverage team. Ruth Rice has done an exceptional job with membership in 2021 bring membership to new highs. We are looking forward to a great 2022.
How about some December bonus golf!! At this writing, pushing 60 and Dec. 11th pushing 70. Pretty crazy warm dry weather we’ve been having as of late. Golf has been steady and keeping up with leaves has been our biggest challenge. We ended ’21 deep tining the fairways and the course is in good shape going into the winter. Topdressing fairways will again happen this off season and continue during the golfing season. This will help with our soils and firmness. We have many other plans this off season to keep the property heading in a positive direction. The large tree to the left of 9 green is to be removed. It is dying and is time.
First, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I hope that all of you and your families had a happy and healthy holiday season.
We planted 3 trees behind that green and will remove big tree soon. We plan to shorten the “bail out” fairway behind 13 green and utilize that bent grass sod for repairs around the course. This grass will be used around some collars, holes 5,6, and other areas needed. I have also ordered materials to install quick couplers around the course. We will dig up selected fairway heads, split off the mainline with 2 connections, and reinstall head and quick coupler. This will give us the opportunity to do hand watering in fairways where needed most. Project will be expensive and time consuming but very beneficial in the end. Water management is still our highest priority, the topdressing and quick couplers will be a big help. As we move into the winter, obviously the grass slows to a crawl. Please take the extra time to replace divots and sand the balance if any. Also the greens can get very firm and ball marks become harder to find. Please take the extra time to fix yours and one other. These little things came help us come out of the winter in great shape. Hope all had a great holiday and thanks for everyone’s help and support!!

THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER UPDATE A NOTE FROM SAMANTHA LESTER, THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER Winter time is here.....sigh..... Although, I can't complain too much. All of the horses are doing well and are keeping warm with their winter coats. This time of year can be hard on the horses. Its not so much the cold, but the wind is what is so awful. The pigs do not tolerate it at all. They will both stay bundled up in their beds and not even attempt to be out in the frigid weather. There has been a lot to do at the barn. We have been busy repairing fence lines, raking leaves, cleaning up dead trees from the pastures and organizing our winter equipment. Thank you to everyone that brought down pumpkins and other treats for the pigs. They loved them. During the months of November and December, we organized a small barn day and had a group come down and spent all day at the barn cleaning tack, organizing buckets and brushes, exercising the horses, grooming, braiding manes and tails and cleaning the barn. After the chores were done, we all set out to the Marina Bay pasture where everyone went on a free range photoshoot with the horses. All of the pictures in this article were taken by Riley Smith, Mallie and Campbell English, Violet Gordon and Maddie Engstrom. All of the Horse camp dates are listed below with the dates, ages and times for each camp. The camps do fill up quickly. Please call the barn or email me if you would like to reserve a spot. This year we are offering a "Tiny Trotter's Camp" for 3 and 4yr olds. Children attending this camp must be accompanied by an adult. Tiny Trotter's Camp with give our little riders the experience of horse camp but on a smaller scale. This camp is for one day and will be from 9 am to 11 am. Children attending the camp will have an opportunity to ride, groom, finger paint the horse, participate in barn games and do a barn craft to take home. Tiny Trotter's Camp with be offered on each Tuesday before each horse camp. **children must be signed up prior to attend**

FITNESS TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR As we go into the New Year with a resolution of getting in shape and losing weight, be sure your goals are specific and attainable. Getting fit and living a healthier lifestyle should be broken down into simple goals based on your current lifestyle. For example, if you are a more sedentary person maybe a realistic goal would be 15 minutes a day of activity. This activity may include simple exercise during commercial breaks of your favorite TV program. Ideas of these exercises may include marching in place, heel raises, bicep curls with cans of soup, and/or standing on one leg for balance. At the end of the TV program, do your favorite stretches such as pulling your knees to your chest holding it at a comfortable stretch to the count of 30 then alternating. Stretching is a great way to create space and flexibility in tight joints; which is crucial before beginning an aggressive strength training program. Furthermore, when your measuring success don't rely so much on the number on the scale. More importantly be mindful of how your body feels before and after your activity and/or stretching. Maybe you will feel less pressure on your joints and lighter on your feet. Maybe you will notice an increase in your energy level and less aches and pains. So even though the scale may not be changing as fast as we would like, we are still reaping the benefits. Activity increases circulation which feeds every cell in our body. As a result, our organs function better and more efficiently. Therefore, the benefits of exercise go deeper then the scale. Keep on moving and have a HAPPY & HEALTHY 2022! RASPBERRY PECAN THUMBPRINT COOKIES
MARBLED VALENTINE SUGAR COOKIES
BY Kenric Hunt
BY Sean O'Neil
This cookie came to mind because of one of my elementary teachers, it was her favorite to give out during Christmastime. I don’t remember details of why it was her favorite, but we knew they were in our goody bags… enjoy a little sweet from a sweet teacher!
This is a simple cookie recipe that will last for generations. My Nonni used to make these cookies for me when I was younger; at first to be her valentine, then to give to my valentine. Now I make them with my daughter and tell her she is my valentine. Enjoy!
Ingredients: 1 ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1 Cup Sugar 1 Large Egg Yolk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 3 ⅓ AP Cup Flour ¼ TSP Salt 1 Cup Toasted Pecans, finely chopped Raspberry Jam
Ingredients: ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, softened ½ Cup Granulated Sugar ½ TSP Baking Powder Red Gel food coloring
Directions: Beat the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer. Mix in the egg yolk and vanilla extract.
Mix in flour, salt and chopped toasted pecans. Mix until well incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Using a cookie scoop, scoop out mounds of the cookie dough into a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using your thumb or the back of a teaspoon, press into the center of each cookie. Fill a piping bag with raspberry jam and pipe the jam into the center of each cookie. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown in color.
THE NAVIGATOR
1 Large Egg 1½ TSP Vanilla Extract ¼ TSP Salt 2 Cup AP Flour
Directions: In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla, followed by salt and baking powder. Scrape the bowl as needed. Gradually mix in flour, increasing speed as needed until dough is fully combined and no streaks remain. Divide dough in half, transferring half to a clean bowl, set aside. Add a small amount of dark pink gel food coloring to the remaining dough. Beat until fully tinted and no streaks remain. Pinch off golf ball sized portions of dough, rolling into balls. Create a pattern of alternate colored balls of dough on your work station. Gently, knead all dough together until swirls of color are visible. Do not over mix. Shape into a disc and wrap in plastic. Chill for 30-60 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thick, on a lightly floured surface. Cut out heart shapes. Space two inches apart on a prepared baking sheet. Freeze cookies for 15 minutes. Press together remaining dough and scraps, re-wrap in plastic and keeping chilled until ready to roll and cut again.
Bake at 350°F for 12 minutes. Allow cookies to rest on the pan for two minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
