FROM THE CLUB FROM DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
Dear Members: We are officially into our summer season and a lot has taken place since our last newsletter. Covid protocols have been lifted and with that, we have welcomed back many of our sorely missed social events and club activities. Participation has been fantastic and we are extremely excited to see all of the new faces. While we are committed to enhancing all facets of the club’s operations, an immaculate golf course will always be a top priority. With last year’s renovations our agronomy practices have had to change. In years’ past we would aerate greens three times annually. With the newer ultradwarfs we will now only aerate once per year. This year’s aeration will take place July 5th – 9th and the golf course will be closed. The practice facility will be closed both Monday and Tuesday, July 5th & 6th, but will re-open on Wednesday, July 7th at 10:00 a.m. With the golf course being closed we will take advantage of the slower times to do some much needed maintenance to our Clubhouse. The Clubhouse facilities will be closed July 5th – July 7th and will re-open on Thursday, July 8th beginning with Pastabilities. Our Facilities Maintenance team will be working on some much needed cleaning as well as power-washing the exterior of the Clubhouse during this time Founded in 2007, the Folds of Honor mission is to provide educational scholarships to the spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members. To display the Grande Dunes Members Club’s commitment to families that have sacrificed so much for our freedoms, the Golf Staff, including Head Professional, Joe De Maio, Assistant Golf Professionals, Mike Gemmer and Chapin Orr, along with myself played 100 holes of golf to show our support and to raise money. We cannot thank the membership enough for their support. Our membership has been extremely gracious in helping us raise nearly $14,000. The support that we received, while playing, was incredible from those who brought food and drink or those who came out for moral support (to see if I would survive). Again, we cannot thank you enough for your generosity. Please be sure to check this month’s newsletter and calendar of events for many exciting things ahead in July and August. It is encouraging to see so many members utilizing the Club. We have a strong membership and your support is what will make Grande Dunes Members Club thrive. Please do not forget about us for a quick bite after a round of golf, a place to watch the game, a date-night, or a friend’s get-together. We have something on the menu for everyone. In closing, please let me know how I or my staff can assist in elevating your club experience. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Club!
Brian Vest, Director of Operations I Brian.Vest@GrandeDunes.com
A NOTE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR Can you believe that we are celebrating July 4th already. Time really does go fast when you are having fun. The weather is especially hot, showers seem to be daily and the course is faring well. More and more golfers and smiling faces in the clubhouse every day. Speaking of the Members Club, we have held some incredible events recently; Gin Night, Motown Party, Kentucky Derby and Wine Dinners along with Game Nights. I hope you were able to enjoy them with us. We are looking forward to more golf and more clubhouse events coming in the fall. Your suggestions are always welcome.

TEE IT UP 2021 Match Play Championship & Member/Member Recap The 2021 Grande Dunes Members Club Match Play Championship in May had a record turnout. We doubled our participation from the last time this event was held. The event had 58 members competing for the top title of Match Play Champion. The field was split into Men’s and Ladies’ Divisions. So far this year, no Major golf tournament has been decided in regulation. This was no exception. Both divisions championships were decided by playing multiple Sudden Death Playoff holes. Our 2021 Match Play Champions, Carol Beard and Jason McWhorter, excruciatingly battled through fierce competition all weekend long to claim the crown of the club. The Member/Member Championship was played on June 12th and 13th. We hosted our largest Member/Member field ever at the club. Ninety-six members participated in this year’s event. The eventual winners, Matt McCormick and Richie Salerno, fought tooth and nail through four additional sudden death holes to end up winning as the sun was setting on the Members Club. Upcoming Events July 4th Red, White, Blue and You Golf Event Format: Team Scramble Time: 9:00 AM Shotgun Start Cost: $50 per player. Includes Golf, Prizes, and Lunch July 5th through July 9th Golf Course Closed – Summer Aeration, clubhouse will be closed on July 5, 6, 7. July 24th & 25th Tradition Golf Tournament Format: An Eclectic- Each two-person team (same or mixed gender) plays 2 rounds, and each golfer compares their scores on each hole per round. The lowest score made on each hole is recorded, producing an 18-hole score. Time: 9 AM Shotgun Start on Saturday and Sunday Cost: $100 per player. Includes Golf, Prizes, and Lunch on Sunday. August 21st & 22nd 2021 Club Championship Format: 36-Hole Medal Play Cost: $150 per player. Includes Golf, Prizes, and Lunch on BOTH days. News from the Golf ShopWith the increase in membership, we wanted to pass along some important information regarding our expectations when at the club. When arriving to the golf club to play or practice, we continue to ask that all members and guests utilize the bag drop. This allows our staff to provide the highest level of service to everyone visiting the club. Additionally, when arriving to the club, please do not use the parking lot to change your shoes. We have a full-service locker room, with lockers available for you to place your shoes and valuables in while you are on the golf course. Please take advantage of the services provided by the club. Furthermore, we understand that golf clothing trends have changed over the years, however, our golf club’s policy is the same for the golf course, as well as the practice facilities. Athletic wear, including jogging pants or mesh shorts, t-shirts, tank tops or halter tops, and any type of jeans, while playing or practicing is strictly prohibited. Men, please remember to keep your golf shirts tucked in and hats facing forward. As much as we appreciate our staff, members, and guests being fashion forward and keeping up with current trends, we feel it is extremely important to maintain the integrity of the game and wear clothing that abides by our Club Rules and Regulations. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with a member of the Grande Dunes Professional Staff for clarification. Lastly, in August of 2020, after the course renovations were complete, the Carolinas Golf Association completed a review of the golf course and provided us with new course and slope ratings as well as their assessment of stroke hole allocations. The club’s Handicap Committee at the time accepted these recommendations, with only some minor changes in stroke hole allocation. The Committee stated its intention to review the stroke hole allocations in 2021 after we had some data regarding our member play on the renovated golf course. The Handicap Committee has completed that review following the USGA recommendations in determining these allocations, and has reallocated the stroke hole distribution using scoring data from our member postings. Starting July 1st, the updated Stroke Allocations will take effect. The scorecards are on order and the reflected changes will be introduced into all of the official Members Club golf events starting in July. Thank you! Warmest regards, Joe De Maio, PGA i Head Golf Professional

FROM THE GREEN At this point our TifEagle Ultradwarf Bermudagrass greens are just over a year old, having been sprigged last June 2nd and 3rd. Lots of differences between Bermudagrass and bentgrass greens. Ultradwarfs as a rule love heat and humidity and tend to grow more aggressively as the weather becomes more oppressive. This is the exact opposite of Bentgrass. Bentgrass greens cannot handle the extremely high heat and humidity, especially when large amounts of play are entered into the equation. As you may have already noticed there are far more necessary cultural practices needed for management of Ultradwarf greens, namely weekly topdressing and routine vertical mowing of the greens. These cultural practices are required to keep the greens from developing large amounts of thatch. Our main objective is to keep the greens in the best possible condition throughout the entire growing season while performing these necessary cultural practices. Speed of the greens is another constant consideration and we are continuing to try every approach for consistent daily speed. This includes lower mowing heights, more frequent light topdressings and daily rolling of the greens. At this point our current height of cut is .110” and we roll greens 5 – 6 times a week. All cultural practices, as well as frequency, have been evolving since the greens began actively growing this summer. It is important to understand that this is our first summer managing TifEagle while not under grow-in conditions. It is impossible to duplicate management practices from other facilities or locations, as growing conditions and turf varieties differ from club to club and place to place. This entire year has been a fact finding mission for us and given us lots of information for future development. Speed and consistency are extremely important to us but it is also important to understand that we will always choose turf health over speed. I would say that the entire course got off to a slow start this season due to extremely dry weather, low humidity and temperatures cooler than normal. Honestly it is difficult to remain patient, especially for us. Truth is all warm season grasses thrive on high heat and humidity, without them it can be difficult to be happy with the results, especially when there is a lack of rainfall as well. Irrigation is supplemental to rainfall. Irrigation cannot mimic the coverage of rainfall, it is impossible. As we all saw the course had an unbelievable response from our first multiple day rainfall event when it was coupled with increased heat and humidity, the course finally came to life. Finally we started to see some definition throughout. However, the very same rainfall event in early June that had so many benefits to the health of the course, left us needing to change the ratio between fertilization and growth regulation to get the greens back under control. At the end of the day nothing plays a larger role than the weather. We can make every necessary adjustment and have perfect timing, double cut greens and roll, but the weather has the last say when it comes to conditions. As always if you have any questions or comments about this article or anything else, I’m always available. Great to see all of the new faces and activity throughout the club. All of the added play has caused us to make some changes to our daily operation, but we’re happy to adjust.
Sincerely, Ryan Gamble Golf Course Superintendent, Grande Dunes Members Club ryan.gamble@grandedunes.com 843-903-3484
