CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT YOUR CLUB MANAGER The heat is on! I hope everyone is enjoying all the outdoor activities at the club and beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. The Men’s Member-Guest was a huge success! There was tremendous feedback from the members throughout the weekend. Congratulation to the team of Mark Teets and his guest Dylan Conners on their outstanding play and capturing the title of 2021 Member-Guest Champions. It was an all-around great effort by the Water’s Edge staff and the McConnell Golf team. Ed Currin, Director of Golf, his staff did an awesome job! Jeff Snyder and his crew had the golf course in great condition. A special shout out to the food & beverage staff for all the set-up/breakdown they did. They worked some long days and most of them were here for every meal served with a great attitude and a smile on their face. Now that all the Covid restrictions have been lifted, we will be planning many events throughout 2021. Please check our events calendar, and we hope you can join us. Samantha Lester our equestrian manager has also been busy with events. Thank you for everyone who has come out and supported their events. We had a great turn out for the beer & barbeque with live music. Movie night and Bingo were also a big hit. They will also have horse camps and young equestrian camps throughout the summer. I was very impressed by the riding skills of the children attending the young equestrian camps; great job Sam! If you missed these events, be sure to check out upcoming events at the barn for July and August.
A NOTE FROM JOHN GUTHMANN YOUR HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL Midsummer Tennis
The clay courts are reserved for Mixed Doubles Round Robin play every M-W-F at 9am. Warmups start at 8:45am. You don’t need a partner – and if you forgot your racquet, we always have extras. If you have guests that play tennis, they are welcome to participate.
A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT The buzz around the club is fantastic. Both play and the enthusiasm are as high as I have seen it. Our goal as staff, is to keep the level of expectations high and the course top notch!! The greens took a bit longer to heal over, post aerification, than years past. Two-fold, cold month or so after punching, and we kept them lean to not promote as much poanna growth. We have since started our poa regulator applications and have 2 in the books. We will stay on this program until the heat has us pull back a bit. We have made multiple
apps for poa on fairways and tees, and again will continue until the heat has us back off. Filling staff positions has been our biggest challenge this year. We are not alone in this regard, but it is frustrating. Seasonal staff are still a bit “green” and we are working on getting them trained up to our expectations. Our goal is to be as firm and fast as we can be. Course may not look as good as years past but looking for better playability. We all can have a hand in this moving forward. Simple things like driving carts wide from bunkers, avoid driving through dry or wet areas, keeping carts in fairways (with our irrigation it is easier to water fairways than roughs), keeping carts on path around tees and greens, etc. The greens will be firmer due to addition topdressing and rolling. Ball marks will be a bit further away from your ball than years past. Take that little extra time to find and repair. Divot procedures are still the same. Please replace what divot structure is there. If full divot is intact, step down and you are done. If not just sand the balance and drag with your foot. Please try to avoid “mounding” of the sand when filling the cavity is needed. This plays hell on the mowers and takes away from the quality of cut. We have multiple rakes in bunkers now so please be kind to your fellow golfers and rake out. Covid stunk but we are getting close to normalcy and golf has been a saving grace for all. We appreciate all who have supported the club through this crazy time and look forward to a great golfing summer!! REMIDER : Greens aerification scheduled for September 7-8
I'd like to personally thank everyone for their support of the Folds of Honor marathon.
Midsummer Special Event: Join us on Monday, July 5th for our Mixed Doubles Strawberries and Champagne tribute to Wimbledon.
Clinics: There will be Saturday tennis clinics on July 10th and July 24th from 9am until 10:30am. Clinics are limited to six participants, with a minimum of two. The charge is $15. There are sign-up sheets in the tennis room. As always, I am also available for private lessons or racquet restringing; you may contact me directly at: 434-927-5039.
PICKLEBALL We offer "drop in" Round Robin every Monday and Friday from 9:00am until 10:30am. All levels are welcome. We are excited that the group is growing! Bring a guest and spread the word.

CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ED CURRIN YOUR GOLF PROFESSIONAL STAFF The summer season is finally upon us. What a great time to be at Smith Mountain Lake and The Water’s Edge. Great golf, beautiful scenery and lots of water sports. Our new logo has been a big hit! Come by the golf shop to check out our new inventory! New items are arriving on a regular basis, so make sure you stop by frequently to catch the latest and greatest items! Kudos to Ethan Dudley and Jeff Snyder for all their efforts in The Folds of Honor Fundraiser. They played 108 Holes of Golf and raised over $27,000 for the cause. We really appreciate all of your support for this worthy cause. The McConnell Group as a whole has raised over $300,000. Great job everyone! We are still planning a fundraising event for the Cool Branch Fire and Rescue Squads. Look for Details soon. We hope everyone is getting acclimated to the new policies and procedures with the McConnell Group. We want to remind everyone that the Course is closed to all play on Monday’s unless it is a holiday when we are open. Effective immediately, we will no longer allow Unaccompanied Guest here at The Water’s Edge. A Guest must play with a Member until further notice. Thanks for the cooperation.

THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER UPDATE A NOTE FROM SAMANTHA LESTER, THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER Summertime is here! We officially kicked off our riding and camp season. Thank you to all of our members and their guests for coming to visit us at “Horses After Dark.” The horses and pigs enjoyed all of the treats and attention they received. Our first movie night was a success even though it rained and was a bit chilly outside. We moved the movie inside and wrapped up with horse blankets and enjoyed popcorn! I would like to welcome “Laura’s Patriot” to our barn. Laura is owned by Olivia Kaczmarskyj. Laura is a thoroughbred mare. Her bloodlines are incredible, and her unique background makes her an awesome horse to have in our barn. Laura was foaled in New York and had a winning track career from 2014-2020, with multiple first place wins. Laura is also a decedent of Secretariat along with a few other great racehorses. Laura arrived at the ban on June 6th and has settled in wonderfully. She has a calm, sweet, and loving disposition and is super friendly.
Horse Facts:
-Horses walk at an average of 4 miles per hour and trot at or between 6-7 miles per hour. -Horses, like humans, have 5 main senses: hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, and feeling, but it is generally considered that horses have a “sixth” sense. This is their ability to sense imminent weather changes, danger, and also pick up on human feelings.

The Ultimate Cookie This past summer while my wife was pregnant she had an occasional sweet tooth. I came across this fun and playful recipe to help fulfill her cravings. From the crunch of the cornflake to the great balance of flavor, I think it’s a great year-round cookie! I hope you all enjoy it! Cheers from my family to yours! Ingredients: 1 Cup Unsalted Butter, softened 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Brown sugar, packed 1 Cup Vegetable Oil 1 Large Egg 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 TSP Salt 1 TSP Vanilla 1 Cup Quick Cooking Oats 3 ½ Cups All-Purpose Flour 1/2 Cup Sweetened Shredded Coconut 1 Cup Lightly Crushed Cornflakes 1/2 Cup Chopped Pecans or Walnuts Directions: Note: This dough requires chilling. Cream butter and sugars in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Cream until light and fluffy. You can also use a hand mixer. Add oil and stir until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mix until smooth, then stir in the salt and baking
soda. Mix in oats and flour until just mixed. Stir in coconut, nuts, and cornflakes. Scoop two tablespoon balls of cookie dough onto a cookie sheet covered in wax or parchment paper. No need to spread the balls out, you’re just going to chill them. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least one hour. (If you chill longer than four hours you may need to let them warm up a few minutes on the counter before baking). Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silpat baking mats. Place cookies two inches apart on prepared cookie sheets. Lightly press down with the palm of your hand. Bake for nine to 11 minutes or until the bottoms just start to turn golden brown. Cool at least 5 minutes on the cookie sheet before removing to rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to five days or freeze for up to one month.

AUGUST PEACH COBBLER COOKIE By Porter's Neck Country Club
Peach Cobbler Cookie When the Dog Days of summer are almost over, one thing is prevalent in the Carolinas as we near the return of school and football season. Peaches, peaches and more peaches! One of the classic dishes utilizing peaches around the house is peach cobbler. This cookie pays tribute to this locally-sourced and delicious stone fruit. Stop by a local produce stand, farmers market or co-op to purchase some. We feel they are best served warm out of the oven with a glass of milk or scoop of vanilla ice cream, you can’t go wrong! We hope you enjoy these sweet flavor packed favorites. Ingredients: 1 Cup Unsalted Butter, softened 1/3 Cup Packed Brown Sugar 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 3 Cups All-Purpose Flour 1 TSP Cream of Tartar 1/2 TSP Salt 1 Cup Diced Peeled Fresh Peaches
1 Cup Sugar 1 Large Egg, room temperature 1/4 TSP Almond Extract 1 ½ TSP Ground Cinnamon 1 TSP Baking Soda 1/4 TSP Ground Nutmeg
Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy for five to seven minutes. Beat in egg and extracts. In another bowl, whisk flour, cinnamon, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt and nutmeg; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Stir in peaches. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls two inches apart onto parchment lined baking sheets. Bake until set, 14 to 16 minutes. Cool on pans for two minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. Store in an airtight container.
