MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dear Members, I hope that you all had a wonderful end to the year and that you were able to visit with family and friends during this festive time. Another year has come and gone – what a year it has been! We have so many incredible accomplishments to celebrate, and I believe 2024 will present even more opportunities for our club. Whether you have been a member for many years or were new to us last year, I would like to personally thank you for being a part of our Providence family. We continue to strive to deliver superior social and recreational experiences through the finest staff, presenting the best possible services, amenities, facilities, and activities. All this is possible thanks to our dedicated staff's tireless efforts. I am genuinely grateful for their valuable contributions. We have had a busy couple of months, and traditionally, January and February are a little slower at the club. Therefore, I would like to encourage you all to participate in the upcoming new dining experiences, including Comfort Nights every third Thursday of the month and Sunday Breakfasts every third Sunday of the month. Chef Craig and his team are working hard to create new dishes and revamp the menu. Stay tuned for menu updates in the Weekly Happenings. Golf is still going strong despite the cooler temperatures, and Kevin and his team are always here to help work on your swing for the next season. Beck and his team are eager to give lessons so you all can be fit for the upcoming season and shine during club tournaments and other league play. Kym and her fitness team are available to take care of those extra pounds that might have shown up over the holidays. Please see them to achieve your personal health and fitness goals. However, if you choose to make use of our amazing amenities and offerings, I sincerely wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Rolf Eckert General Manager

GOLF FORE ALL
From the Links Happy New Year from the Professional Staff! We’re excited to ring in the New Year and see all that 2024 has to offer. 2023 continued to be a big year for golf, as rounds of golf, tournament participation, lessons being taught, and Operation36 thriving kept us busy. We’re excited for the 2024 competition calendar, which will continue to build camaraderie amongst the membership at Providence Country Club. We very much appreciate all of you who support the golf shop, the tournament program, and your trust in our instructions while working to improve your golf game. If our team can do anything to create a better golf experience for you, your family, or guests, let us know, and we’ll be glad to assist. Please come by the golf shop and say hello during the cold months. It gets quite chilly with a lack of action this time of year. Here’s to a memorable 2024! All the best, KEVIN REARDON, PGA PGA Director of Golf
Golf Tip..... The winter months are a great time to check the lies and lofts of your clubs. So often, we see members discussing with their playing partners that their 6 iron and 7 iron go the same distances. Recently, we’ve done a fair amount of club bending to ensure the lofts on your clubs are accurate. Our team highly suggests that you check the lofts and lies of your clubs annually. Over time, your clubs will slightly bend when hitting off firm turf, off mats, or just from excessive use. Come by the golf shop and let us check your clubs. It could make a big difference in some of the distances your clubs travel.

GREENS AND GROUNDS
Golf Course Update With 2023 behind us, I’m excited to look forward to what 2024 has in store for us here at Providence. Some big-ticket items were crossed off the list over the past two months, and we can now hit the reset button and prepare for the new year. We were able to apply our big pre-emergence/post-emergence herbicide spray back in November. This set us up for a clean golf course through the fall, winter, and part of spring. We were also able to finally tidy up the course and get all the leaves cleaned up. Having these things behind us has allowed us to concentrate on other things to get ready for the 2024 growing season. Winter time presents a good opportunity to do some tree work that we may not have time to complete during the rush of the growing season. Trees that are dead, present a hazard, or compromise turf health are things we look for during the growing season so we know what to address during the winter months when there is time. We have corrected some soil issues and implemented different fertilization practices over the past few years, and we have seen improvements as a result. I am excited to implement my own pesticide plan for 2024. After dealing with recurring diseases, I will be utilizing new fungicide chemistries for more thorough protection to help keep the major soil diseases suppressed. We will also be adjusting the Plant Growth Regulator (PGRs) program on greens and fairways to see if we can enhance playing surfaces by using different chemical methods. As always, we will continue to follow a simplistic, no-nonsense approach to maximize plant health throughout the growing season and year-round. We will have our spring pre-emergence herbicide/fertilizer bulk spread application take place near the end of January. We have used this timing for the past three years, and it has been very successful at keeping us clean and weed-free. We go this early for two reasons: One reason is so we can get it done and over with. However, the main reason is so that the material is there, in the ground, for whenever the plants are ready to start waking up. This may happen with a warm spell in February or an early spring green-up. Regardless, we will be ready for whatever the weather throws at us from a weed-prevention standpoint. See you on the course, MARK SCOTT Golf Course Superintendent

January Cookie of the Month GINGERSNAP COOKIE RECIPE LYNN HART, PASTRY CHEF AT RALEIGH COUNTRY CLUB When I was 37 years old, I went back to school to get a culinary degree. This was one of the first things I baked at Trails End. More than twenty-five years later, it is still one of my favorite cookie recipes. Whenever I make them, I think of Gary Henz and the incredible opportunities I have received because of the strong foundation he laid for me. INGREDIENTS: 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 4 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 cups granulated sugar (additional sugar will be needed for rolling) 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil 2 eggs 1/2 cup molasses
DIRECTIONS: Sift the flour, baking soda, ground ginger, salt, and ground cinnamon together. Use a paddle blade on your mixer and mix the sugar and vegetable oil together for 1 minute. Add one egg at a time followed by the molasses. Mix this together for 1 minute. Fold in the sifted dry ingredients a little at a time until it is well blended. This should take about two more minutes for the proper mixing. Chill the dough for at least an hour before you scoop them. Roll the scooped dough in sugar and bake: Conventional oven - 350 degrees for 12 minutes, Convection oven - 325 degrees for 8-10 minutes. 3 teaspoon scoop will make 106 cookies.

February Cookie of the Month PEANUT BUTTER HEART COOKIE RECIPE DYRIEK SHAW, SOUS CHEF AT TREYBURN COUNTRY CLUB Reese’s cups have always held a special place in my heart. It’s one of those things that when I eat them, they teleport me through many happy memories. One of which involved my grandmother giving me my first one when I was a child. Since then, they have always made me think of her. This is where my love for peanut butter and chocolate are able to come together, as I’ve created a peanut butter press cookie with a Reese’s cup melted in the center. Who doesn’t love these two ingredients together? And as she would say, “bless your heart.” INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup unsalted butter 1/4 cup vegetable shortening 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1 cup granulated sugar, divided 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 12-ounce package Reese's Peanut Butter Hearts
THE PROVIDENCE PRESS
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a mixing bowl; cream together butter, shortening, peanut butter, ½ cup granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add in eggs, mixing after each addition. Mix in the vanilla. In a separate bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix gently to combine. Don’t over-mix. The dough will be very soft. Pour remaining 1/2 cup of granulated sugar into a small bowl. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Scoop dough into balls and then roll in sugar. Bake for 7-10 minutes, just until set. They will be pale, and look just barely set. Don’t over-bake them or they will be hard once cooled. Remove from oven and allow to cool on baking sheet for 2-3 minutes, and then transfer to cooling rack. Press an unwrapped Reese’s heart to the center of each warm cookie. Allow cookies to cool completely. Store leftover cookies in a container at room temperature, or they freeze very well.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER 2023
I have been at PCC for 1 year. I would like to personally share part of my life. I am a Christian. On June 22, 2022, I was baptized in the Jordan River in Israel. My favorite singer is Juan Luis Guerra. In 2004, he received Jesus in his heart and his life changed completely and now he only sings Christian Music. I like the lyrics and all of his songs. My hobbies are walking, reading, and listening to music.
I have been at PCC for 7 months. My favorite food is Biscuit Pizza and a slice of cheesecake. I would also prefer to dine at home with my cat, Munchie, instead of eating out. My favorite movie is of course, The Proposal! My hobbies are being crafty, Jiu-jitsu, and I love to draw and write. I would have loved to have gotten to know my Grandfather— I know we would be close.
