COURTSIDE NEWS Summer and fall brought some fun and exciting memories on the tennis courts at Country Club of Asheville. From junior tournaments to adult clinics, members shared many laughs on the court. The McConnell Ladies Tennis Weekend, an event that involves tennis players from different McConnell Clubs, took place at CCA this past September. Players come to one club for a weekend of clinics, round robins, tournaments, food and beverages. This is the first time since COVID that the McConnell Ladies Tennis Weekend has taken place and I hope to continue the tradition in years to come!

CLINIC SCHEDULE

With winter coming, freezing weather is imminent in the mountains of Asheville. This, of course, means the unfortunate closing of the outdoor clay tennis courts. Due to the risk of freezing pipes, water must be drained from the pipes and turned off for the season. On the bright side! We do have two heated indoor tennis courts and 6 indoor pickleball courts! So, if you are looking for a good indoor activity during the winter, contact me to get involved!

WEDNESDAY Beginner Clinic 9:00am-10:30am Aces/Smashers 5:00pm-6:30pm

We have a few events to look forward to as we approach the end of the year: November 3rd: Pickle & Pinot A pickleball round robin where you can enjoy some social pickleball as well as refreshments. Play will start at 5pm. December 2nd & 3rd: Pickleball Tournament The first of many during the colder months, Pickleball Tournaments are a great opportunity to up your game and get involved in some competitive pickleball.

BEGINNING NOVEMBER 1 MONDAY Advanced Clinic 9:30am-11:00am Tiny Tots 4:00pm-5:00pm Aces/Smashers 5:00pm-6:30pm TUESDAY Cardio Tennis 9:00am-10:30am Smashers 5:00pm-6:30pm

THURSDAY Intermediate Clinic 10:00am-11:30am Tiny Tots 4:00pm-5:00pm Hitters 5:00pm-6:00pm FRIDAY Advanced Clinic 10:00am-11:30am SATURDAY Intermediate/Advanced 10:30am-12:00pm

FITNESS

Physical Therapy at CCA It's The Off Season What can you start doing in the off season to improve your game next year? The easy and simple answer is to work on increasing your clubhead speed. The old saying goes, "Drive for show, putt for dough" and was probably coined by someone who slices the ball into the next county off the tee. The data however shows that while Pros are statistically better than amateurs inside of 10 feet putting, they are not that much better outside of that range. The biggest statistical difference between pros and amateurs is their distance off the tee. Even between pros, the distance off the tee and the strokes gained from tee to green denotes a better money list position than the golfer who gains more strokes putting. So what do I do? I get asked this question a lot, and unfortunately it is not a one size fits all solution. My first suggestion is, if you are not in the gym doing some sort of strength training, start there! If you need help, then recruit the help from a personal trainer. If you want to go all in, then completing a full body assessment will help you understand where to focus your training and allow you to make the most gains pertaining to the golf swing. Hold a gun to my head and say, what is one tip, I would say strengthening your hips and core will benefit your swing and body the most. Want more? In addition to getting your base level fitness in, work on plyometrics, specifically single leg explosive work. A study in 2018 found that golfers who completed an 8 week plyometric training cycle increased their clubhead speed 2x, ball speed 1.5x, carry distance 2.36x, and total distance 4.41x versus the gains of a control group. Training your body to move explosively will help you create more power and speed in the golf swing. This is not just swinging a speed stick hard and then going to the course, even though that does help, it is learning and perfect moments that make up the golf swing. Want to know more, set up a phone consultation or a full body assessment with Dr. Walt through his website www.performance-ability.com or stop into the physical therapy room on Tuesday or Thursday.

‘Why I Love Yoga!’ I’ve done yoga for a very long time and value the strength, flexibility and balance that comes with the practice. (Although I don’t so much buy into the Hindu philosophy, I do respect it and acknowledge they were on to something when the ancients organized this series of movements to promote good health. I’m more in line with Newton’s first law: a body in motion tends to stay in motion, even though it wasn’t written for humans, maybe it applies!) And Paula is a treasure! I didn’t know she was part of the deal when we joined the club but I’m sure glad she’s here. I’ve been in hundreds of Paula’s classes, and they are all rewarding. No two are the same and she’s great with beginners and all levels of experience. She leads with great skill and is a gifted teacher who makes the practice really accessible and fun. Dave Peterson - CCA

Yoga classes continue with Paula throughout the Winter! Mat Classes on Tuesday & Thursday @ 8:30AM Chair Classes on Tuesday & Thursday @ 9:45AM Any questions can be emailed to phanke@ccofasheville.com
