CLUB UPDATE
A NOTE FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER
A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
We have seen a lot of new things thrown our way over the past few months but one thing remains constant - your continued support of Old North State Club. I thank you for your patience with all the new procedures we have had to put in place while navigating through these new times.
Summer is here and it arrived swinging a big stick! The heat and humidity has returned to the area, making it a great time to cool off at the club! Whether you prefer the lake, being poolside, a patio with a lake breeze, or sitting in the air conditioning, the club has everything you need to enjoy your summer!
Even during these turbulent times we should look at the many positive strides we have made. Pickleball has been a “smashing” success and we look too continually grow this exciting new activity. We continue to enjoy a terrific golf course that remains in excellent condition. The golf team has helped many fine tune your game (and wardrobe) over the past few months to ensure you play your best and look your best. The facility maintenance team has been hard at work making sure everything is running smoothly and continues to make some major improvements. The food and beverage team has welcomed many of you back inside the clubhouse to enjoy a meal with family and friends and will be introducing some new ideas to bring the dining experience to a new level. You will begin to see a fair amount of new faces around the community as our membership family grows, so be on the lookout to meet that new golf partner, new dining group, or new tennis partner the next time you visit your club.
As we continue to navigate changes to our normal operations in response to social distancing requirements and guidelines, your patience is appreciated. The good news is we have tons of space at the club for everyone to spread out – whether you are on the golf course, tennis courts, poolside, on the patio or a dining room, or on the more than 8 square miles of Badin Lake, you can keep your distance from others while enjoying your summer in luxury! Newer membership offerings for non-residents that live outside a 20-mile radius have been popular for the past year and provide a way for those weekenders to enjoy the club. If you have friends, neighbors or colleagues in the surrounding area that may be interested in our Uwharrie Regional Golf Membership, please send them my way – I would love to share our offerings and show them how they can take advantage of the good life at the lake!
Your continued referrals of new members is appreciated and I look forward to seeing you and your guests around the club this summer! Chad Flowers
See you around the club! Brian Pabst

A NOTE OF THANKS Good Afternoon Brian,
I want to extend my sincere thanks to you and especially Chef Ron for the outstanding meal last night for my birthday night. Everyone at our table commented on how tender and flavorful the prime rib was. My tennis group this morning also had many positive comments about the meal. Going back earlier this week, our wine dinner was also excellent! The room was nicely decorated, the food was terrific and the wine pairings were perfect! Chef Ron and his team did another fantastic job. Thank you, Brian, for your leadership in making the reopening happen so successfully! With Justin leading a re-energized golf program and Chef Ron turning out such great food we are truly blessed! I believe this is the best leadership team we have had at the ONSC since Janet and I moved here full time in 2005. Thanks again! Rich Schaefer

TEE IT UP A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, "Change is the only constant in life." The year 2020 has certainly had its share of change thus far: noodles in the cups, masks, no touching the flagsticks, social distancing. However, we have been fortunate that our course has remained open and golf has remained a constant source of recreation.
FOLDS OF HONOR 100 HOLES MARATHON On Monday, June 22 at 6:28am, Adam Davey, PGA, Brian Pabst, Josh Rowell, and Justin Mathers, PGA embarked on a 13 hour, 100 hole golf marathon to raise money for Folds of Honor. They were able to raise over $16,500, which equates to 3-plus scholarships for families of disabled or fallen American service members.
At ONSC, we have enjoyed the Men's Member-Member tournament, Club Championships, multiple club fitting days, and the Ladies MemberMember tournament during the last two months. We are grateful to our members for their flexibility regarding the rescheduling of events in order to adhere to COVID regulations.
This team of dedicated employees were overwhelmed with the support received from club members, family, and friends. The Four Hole Punchers were fortunate to have a beautiful day fo r100 holes of golf, some great shots, and tremendous fan support along the course. A big thank you to everyone who contributed!
On July 2, I celebrated one year as the Director of Golf at ONSC. It has been a wonderful experience getting to know our members and staff, planning events, growing the golf program, and enjoying the lake life. Old North State is a special place that I look forward to showcasing to
On October 2, we will have part 2 of our Folds of Honor fundraiser. It will be a one-day Member-Guest golf event so mark your calendars!

KEEPING IT STRAIGHT Temperatures are heating up at the lake. This takes a toll on our turf, so it's important to utilize linear divot patterns when practicing. Here is the explanation from the USGA on why this is best for our range: A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. This forces the golf facility to rotate tee stalls most frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee. A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery.
Meet the newest member of our Grounds Crew! He has been working hard to keep our rough looking good for you. Photo by Herb Niparts.
A NOTE OF THANKS Hey Brian [Kittler], I hope that you're doing well and congrats on making a successful career with McConnell! My parents, Bob and Ruth Allbert, built one of the early homes in the neighborhood. My family just made the leap to join the club, we became members this month. I just wanted to share a huge compliment for the staff at the ONSC golf shop. Seeing Tom Ducey retire (who had such a long and significant impact at ONSC) was a big moment, but the current team has maintained the excellence and added some cool new twists. Justin, Adam and Jared are great. I love Justin's creativity with the merchandise and his communication. For instance, introducing tee shirts was brilliant. Adam is one of the friendliest guys to have worked at the club. I'm glad that my boys can take some golf lessons from him. Anyway, the club has always been great, going back to you, Tom and Graham. Thought I'd quickly share a compliment on the newer team. Thanks, Jason Allbert
The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In so doing, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method. If you see someone making an incorrect divot pattern, please explain to them how to use a linear pattern. It will preserve our turf and make the practice range better for everyone.

JUSTIN'S TIPS FOR THE SUMMER
PUTTING, CHIPPING, & PITCHING
PUTTING Stay still. The world's best putters focus on keeping their lower body still during the stroke. I concentrate on keeping my kneecaps from moving in order to roll the ball on line with fewer moving parts.
Ball position. Many players position the ball too far back in their stance. Try moving the ball towards your front foot so you catch the ball on the upswing. SPEED! SPEED! SPEED! Learning to control distance helps you become a great putter. Use the "Squeeze Drill" and see how many golf balls you can squeeze in. Line up 10 balls approximately 15 feet from the hole; putt the first ball and see if you can continue to putt each consecutive ball closer to the hole. Remember, speed is more important than direction. 9-Hole Drill. Place 9 balls around one hole and putt them one at a time and finish each. Ace is a birdie, 2 is a par, 3 is a bogey, etc. Get the ball to the hole! If you hit it past the hole at least you can watch to see the line needed coming back. Practice putting the ball on the "high side" of the break and past the hole in order to make more putts. Get a grip. Grips are a personal preference. Don't be afraid to try one of the top three grips: Reverse Overlap, Cross-Hand, or THE CLAW! CHIPPING & PITCHING Chipping and pitching are the least practiced but most important part of the game. Good chipping and pitching can salvage a poor ball striking day.
Use this tip: "Putt if you can; chip if you cannot putt; pitch if you cannot chip." Let the lie of the ball and the situation dictate your decision. This allows you to utilize the most effective and highest percentage shot to get the ball closer to the hole.
KEEPING IT COOL
Things are heating up on the course -- not just the competition but the temperatures as well. It is important to remember to use sunscreen (available in the Golf Shop if you need some) and to STAY HYDRATED. We have compiled a list of tips regarding hydration to help keep everyone safe and in top golf shape! Once our bodies begin to sweat our hydration levels decrease. When levels drop by just 2%, muscle speed, strength, coordination, and mental abilities are negatively affected. Don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. Thirst occurs after you are dehydrated. Additionally, when you are drinking your thirst is usually quenched before your body's water supply is replenished. So drink water during exercise even when you don't feel thirsty. HYDRATION TIPS Moisture wicking clothing helps sweat to evaporate, resulting in cooling of the body. Caffeine and alcoholic beverages can cause further dehydration. Water consumption when golfing: Night before: Drink 2 (12 oz) bottles of water 4 hours before bedtime. Morning: Protein breakfast that includes 1 bottle of water. During: Drink 1 bottle of water every hour. If you see water, drink water! After: Have 1 bottle of water before any alcoholic drinks. The ONSC course provides plenty of lake views. Use them as reminders to hydrate. Your body will continue to use water for at least 45 minutes after playing. Learn the Edges of the Wedges. Wedges, like all clubs, have a leading and a trailing edge. What differentiates them is that they are "scoring" clubs and you may need to manipulate the face a little more to create touch shots around the greens. Chip Shots require you to lean the club more on the leading edge and play the ball further back in your stance. This helps you to pick the ball cleanly and get it rolling towards the hole. This is also known as the "Bump and Run" which can be done with many different clubs. My favorite club to use for this shot is the 9-iron. Pitch Shots are geared more towards loft and spin and require you to lay the club on its trailing edge. Slide the club under the ball in order to create height when you have less green with which to work. JUSTIN'S TIP: "Lean it to clean it; lay it to filet it." This means lean the shaft forward to pick it clean for a chip shot. Lean the shaft backward to slice under the ball for a pitch shot.

TENNIS TIP You can still practice your tennis game at home, in your garage, or your backyard. You don’t even need a court. This drill will help improve volley technique and hand-eye coordination. If this drill is practiced consistently, it increases reflexes quite noticeably.
VOLLEY-TO-VOLLEY DRILL
You’ll need two people, each with a racket, and one tennis ball. Unless you have a huge indoor space, you’ll want to do this drill outside. Doing it on smooth pavement is the easiest. Make sure to use the continental grip. 1. Stand about 15-18 feet apart, facing each other. 2. Volley the ball to each other. Try to take the ball out of the air. If the ball hits the ground just half volley it and continue on. 3. As you build up feel, you can increase the pace or hit different spots. For example, forehand volley to forehand volley. Or try backhand-to-backhand. 4. Keep the ball going as long as possible. If you get to the point of being super-advanced with this drill, alternate moving side-to-side while volleying.

A NOTE FROM YOUR DOCKMASTER Summer is here and it’s HOT!!!! With COVID-19 making its appearance this year, we have to adapt to never before seen conditions. With that being said, be mindful there are a lot of new boaters and younger operators on the water this summer. With that inexperience, hazards can evolve into bad outcomes. Keep a close eye out as they might not be aware of people swimming at the piers or boats trying to park. With this summer in full swing please allot us some extra patience when requesting service. If you want your boat launched, please call with plenty of notice (1 hour minimum) so that we may keep up with the demand and provide the outstanding service you deserve! Our rental pontoon has been a smash hit this year. We don’t have much availability left. Please schedule well in advance. As always feel free to come by and enjoy our picnic area by the water! Our partners at Wake the World built 8 new tables and a boardwalk so that we all may enjoy it! I wish you all a safe and happy summer. Dustin Hinson
