CLUB UPDATE AND NEW MEMBERSHIP A NOTE FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Hello Old North State! Hopefully, by the time you read this, the pollen has left us and you are now ready to get outside and enjoy a busy spring at Old North State. Just this past month we were able to welcome in members, their families, and their friends for Easter Brunch and served over 150 meals in the clubhouse! While we may not be completely “out of the woods yet”, it was a great day and provided some hope of great things to come after such a long period of uncertainty. As we hopefully continue to enjoy continued relaxed restrictions, we will be announcing any changes to our events through club emails and on our social media platforms. Some of these events take a great amount of planning and simply cannot be pulled off last second so we must plan them under the current circumstances.

Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and check the club emails so you are up to date on everything going on at the club. Here's to a great year at Old North State and on behalf of all staff, we look forward to seeing you soon. Brian Pabst Club Manager

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS David & Elizabeth Printy Please join us in welcoming the Printy family to the Old North State Club! They recently relocated to Badin Lake from the mid coast of Maine. David and Beth have three grown children. Their first son is a career army officer, currently at the NSA; their second son is a nurse, managing oncology clinical research at UPENN medical center in Philadelphia, and their daughter is a teacher at the Vail Mountain School in Colorado and soon to be a Wilmington, NC resident. Elizabeth most recently served on Bowdoin College’s voice faculty after a career in opera including the Met and as a soloist with leading symphonies. David has had a career in healthcare, managing academic medical centers in the US as well as extensive international work in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. They look forward to spending time at the club and meeting many members! Mike & Jennifer Quigley The Quigleys have been enjoying weekends at the lake since 2006. They moved full-time to the lake from Summerfield, NC in 2015. Mike works for Kruger Packaging based in Montreal, Canada as VP of Business Development - USA. Jennifer is a retired CPA. They have four adult children; daughter Katie (32) and husband Walt Tuttle and daughter Abbey (27) along with sons Matthew (31) and Michael (26). Sandra and Matt had a baby this year and they are looking forward to spending more time with their parents here at the lake! “We started looking around for a lake house last year when we came here to look at a house. We loved the feeling of leaving the work-day world on the outside of the gates,” Jim says. “Nancy and I have been environmental volunteers for years, we have done everything from simple recycling, to having our own solar power system. We worked with the US Green Building Council and have sponsored or worked a booth at Earth Day events for years. I served on the Board of Directors for the NC USGBC. We have one son, Catlin, 32, who lives in Asheville and a silver lab named Creek. When we are not on the lake we enjoy traveling, gardening and reading.” Please join us in welcoming the Lawrences to the club!

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Dave & Teresa Sowinski The Sowinskis are very familiar with the club and area, as they have been members of our reciprocal club, Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, for 30 years where their three sons Mark (29), Brian (27), and Kevin (23) spent countless hours at the range and on the course. Mark and his wife Callie live in New York City while Kevin who recently graduated from UNC is also headed to New York City. Brian and his wife Holly live in Charlotte and are excited about spending time at Old North State. Dave recently retired from the furniture industry while Teresa still works parttime in her family’s property management business. The Sowinskis were long-time neighbors of the Muirs and like the Muirs, decided to sell their home in Greensboro and move full time to Old North State. The Sowinski family looks forward to enjoying all that Old North State has to offer!

TEE IT UP A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

A NOTE FROM YOUR COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Old North State Members,

Have you driven up to the putting green shortly after or during a rain event only to see the green being watered? I've received more than one call asking this question. I get that it seems ridiculous, but there is a reasonable explanation. Most of us would agree that rain promotes plant health and vigor. There are also other things that benefit from rain like pythium root rot. This disease can destroy the roots of cool-season bentgrass greens in a matter of hours in the right environment. Fungicides are very effective in controlling pythium root rot and other turf diseases are applied as a liquid using fine mist nozzles attached to a boom on a drivable sprayer.

I hope this finds everyone well! The golf course conditions added to some great weather this spring and has provided you all with some enjoyable events to kick off the 2021 Golf Season! Hopefully, you were able to take part in our functions over the past two months. We kicked off the WGA and the Men's golf season with Opening Days, sprinkled in a dozen different club fittings, hosted our first roundrobin Spring Match Play, mastered a Masters Pro-Am event, shifted the WGA 9 and Dine and the Couple's Sundowners into gear, fielded a CGA Senior Interclub Team... plus hosted two one-day MemberGuest events.... not a bad start to what I believe will be a very active season. And we aren't slowing down anytime soon. May and June bring us some MAJOR events that hopefully you won't miss. Men's Member-Member is scheduled for May 22-23, Ladies MemberMember is scheduled for June 2nd, and the Men's Member-Guest June 10th-12th...plus we host the Men's CPGA NC Senior Open, where we have a handful of Members competing alongside an already SOLD-OUT event! Don't blink or you may miss something over the next 60 days! The merchandise continues to roll in here at the Lake, and no, it's not just golf apparel; I see the need for lifestyle pieces here. We continue to diversify our buying in order to make sure each golfer has all the latest collections such as Peter Millar, FJ, GFORE Shoes, Stitch, and Turtleson. Stay tuned for the introduction of Fish Hippie leisurewear and golf shirts too, but we also will make a strong move towards having something for the non-golfer as well. Lake Life T-Shirts, Pickleball Paddles, Badin Lake Hoodies, Full Zip Sweatshirts, Custom Boat/Golf Cart/Car Stickers, Peter Millar Bathing Suits, and much more! I also want to recognize Chris Chapman and his staff for the incredible course conditions early in the season.

When we are targeting root disease the fungicide must be delivered to the root zone to be effective. This is where irrigation comes into play. The main purpose of watering isn't to wet the soil but to wash the root targeted fungicide to the root zone where the disease is active. So next time you are at the course and see the greens being watered shortly after a rain, it is a good thing! Chris Chapman

The greens are slick and getting better by the day. The root system is much improved even since last year. Keep it up Agronomy Team! Have a great season and please reach out to anyone on the golf staff if you need assistance! Justin Mathers, PGA

MARINA & NEWS FROM THE NET A NOTE FROM YOUR DOCKMASTER Summer is here! The weather is nice, the sun is out, it’s that time! Boat rides every day with the Seagulls and Herons soaring about. Pollen is clearing away. It's the perfect time for Badin Lake! I’m sure most of you are aware now is the time where being on the lake can really make life good! The water has warmed up and Summertime is here along with the magic that brought most of you to enjoy our hidden gem of a lake. With that being said now is the time if you haven’t already, to have the marina service and detail your boat for the season. Having that fresh shine and smooth performance really makes your boating experience much more enjoyable. Also, it is great to take advantage of boats being in the water, to have the marina fix any lingering issues with your trailers. Bunks rot out, carpet comes off, brakes rust, and bearings need replacing. We can take care of all of that during this time. Our hours of operation will expand as we get to Memorial Day! We have some new employees down at the fuel dock this year, so come by and say hi to Madison, Maydee, and Anna. If you have any questions give us a call at 336-461-4456. I look forward to seeing you by the water! As always….. Have A Swell Day! Dockmaster Dustin Hinson

COOKIES OF THE MONTH MAY: CLEAR-THE-CUPBORD COCONUT OATMEAL PECAN COOKIES By Rhett Sorg - The Reserve Golf Club at Pawley's Island

When I was young, I first had these cookies at a friend's house; her mother had made them for her for years. My friend was not really interested in them at all, having eaten "thousands" of them. Kind of like a Lays Chip, you "can't eat just one" so I ate all that were there. As time went on I met her mother and we talked about the cookies and how I'm not a very good baker. We went to the kitchen and "cleared the cupboard" and made the cookies. I have been a big fan ever since and make them occasionally for my kids when they come home. Haven't had any left over's yet!!! Yield: Approximately 4 Dozen Cookies Ingredients: 1 Cup Shortening 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Brown Sugar, firmly packed 2 Large Eggs 2 Cups AP Flour 1 Cup Uncooked Oats 1 TSP Baking Soda

1 TSP Baking Powder 1 TSP Salt 1 Cup Flaked Coconut 1 Cup Crisp Rice Cereal 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 1 Cup Pecans, chopped

Directions: Beat shortening at medium speed with electric mixer until fluffy, add sugars, beat well. Add eggs, beat until blended. Combine flour, oats, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add sugar to the mixture, beating until blended. Stir in coconut, cereal, vanilla, and pecans. Drop by tabelspoonfuls onto baking sheets. Bake in batches at 350F for 10 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove to wire cooling rack.

JUNE: CHOCOLATE-PEANUT BUTTER NO BAKE COOKIES By Beverly Marler - Sedgefield Country Club

One of my personal favorite combinations is always chocolate and peanut butter. My mom used to make these for us when we were younger except she would joke around and call them cow patties. She liked to make these during the summer months to avoid the heat of cutting on the oven. I remember anxiously waiting for dinner to be over so we could have a no bake cookie and robbing the fridge when there were extras. Ingredients: 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter 1 3/4 Cups Granulated Sugar 1/3 cut Unsweetened Cocoa Powder 1/2 Cup Milk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 2/3 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter 3 Cups Quick Oats Dash of Salt Directions: Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a 2.5 to 3 quart saucepan combine butter, sugar, cocoa, and milk. Set over medium heat and cook stirring frequently until it reaches a full boil (should be a rolling boil). Allow mixture to boil for 60 seconds without stirring. Remove from heat, immediately add in vanilla. peanut butter, and quick oats. Stir mixture until well combined, then, using a medium (2 TBSP) cookie scoop or two spoons, drop mixture onto lined baking sheets. Refrigerate until set. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.

MUSGROVE MILL COTTAGES AND SUITES Maximize your time on the course and make your visit to Musgrove Mill Golf Club a relaxing one with our on-site accommodations. For larger groups of 8-16, both the Morgan and Lee Cottages are just what you need after a good day on the course with the Francis Marion and Preston Suites perfect for couples. The Palmer design is located about 90 miles from both Charlotte and Asheville and is known not only for its changing elevations but its history, beauty, and landscape. This private golf sanctuary has no surrounding homes or structures; its creation in 1988 was focused solely on the integrity of the game and profound respect for the natural wilderness of Upstate South Carolina. If you haven't visited it yet, it's time. For additional information, contact Director of Golf Jeff Tallman at 864833-6921 or jeff@musgrovemill.com. Sleep. Golf. Eat. Repeat.
