As I wrote in the last newsletter, maybe winter isn’t so bad after all. We had a very cold streak in November, but outside of that, things have been somewhat mild. Now if we can just get all of this rain out of here, we’ll be in great shape headed into golfing season! Most of you are aware I am not at the club every day. When I do have the privilege of being on property (usually once a week) I always notice something that has changed. Whether it be a newly landscaped area, a new event added to the social calendar, or something in the clubhouse that has been tweaked, there are many positive changes happening at the club that are continuing to add value to your membership. As we continue to grow and enhance our offerings, in 2019 we rolled out new offerings for residents and non-residents to enjoy the club. If you have friends, neighbors and/or colleagues that would benefit from membership within the club, please invite them out for a visit as your guest. Further, let me know in advance when you are bringing a prospective member as a guest and we will be happy to cover their golf, tennis or pool guest fee! Thank you in advance for your support of the club and continued growth to the membership – here’s to spring and warmer, drier weather headed our way very soon! ROGER PLOTT MADE HIS PRESENCE KNOWN ON PRESIDENT’S DAY AT OLD NORTH STATE CLUB AS HE MADE HIS WAY DOWN #18 . ISN’T THAT A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF MT. RUSHMORE!!

A NOTE FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER Happy spring! With winter hopefully behind us, we look towards springtime and seeing many of you returning to Old North State Club for what promises to be an exciting year. With the Men’s ACC Golf Championship quickly approaching, I would like to thank all of you that volunteer your time to help host this wonderful event. We could not do it without you! .

While I have heard the beginning of the year is a “slow” time, let me reassure you, all of us at ONSC have not slowed down. The entire staff has been using this time to improve many aspects of the club with the intention of providing better service and a more enjoyable experience. While many of the improvements have taken place “behind the scenes,” these projects are crucial in improving club operations. Please be sure to join us on the tennis courts on Saturday, March 14, from 10:30-12:30 as we welcome our new Tennis Pro Kent Whitener. Many of you might already know Kent as he is the head coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Pfeiffer University. Kent brings with him a wealth of tennis knowledge to help you improve any and all aspects of your game. Please join us in welcoming him to the Old North State community. BRIAN PABST

COOKIE OF THE MONTH

MARCH COOKIE OF THE MONTH: HEATH BAR COOKIES Ron Gordils I Old North State Club Growing up my great grandmother would always hand out Heath Bars for the holidays. That and a five dollar bill for every birthday, Christmas and she would even hand out Easter cards! She has been gone for a few years now but anytime I have a Heath Bar I think of her. This cookie is a delicious balance of cookie dough and Heath Bar crunch. Enjoy! Ingredients: 2 ½ Cups All-Purpose Flour 1 TSP Salt 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 Cup (2 sticks) Unsalted Butter ¾ Cup Brown Sugar ¾ Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Eggs 1 TSP Vanilla 1 ½ Cups Chopped Heath Bar pieces (Eight 1.4 ounce bars) ½ Cup Chopped Walnuts Directions: Whisk dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, vigorously whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Set aside. In a separate bowl, combine Heath Bar pieces and chopped walnuts. Set aside. Whisk butter, sugars, vanilla, then add eggs: In a large bowl, beat together the butter, brown and white sugars, and vanilla. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Make and chill dough: Add the flour mixture a third at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in the Heath Bar walnut mixture. Chill cookie dough for at least 30 minutes (better an hour or longer).

APRIL COOKIE OF THE MONTH: CARROT CAKE COOKIES The Easter Bunny’s Pick Ingredients: 3/4 Cup (1 1/2 sticks) Butter, softened 1 Cup Packed Brown Sugar 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Large Eggs 1 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract 1 1/2 Cups All-Purpose Flour 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 TSP Ground Cinnamon 1/4 TSP Ground Nutmeg 1/2 TSP kosher Salt 1 Cup Packed Shredded Carrots 3/4 Cup Unsweetened Shredded Coconut 1/2 Cup Raisins 2 Cups Old-Fashioned Oats CREAM CHEESE GLAZE 1 Cup Powdered Sugar 1 OZ. Cream Cheese, at room temperature 4 TSP. Milk 1/4 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract Directions: Preheat oven to 350º and line a baking sheet with parchment. In a bowl of an electric mixer, beat butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, until incorporated, then add vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Spoon out dough balls onto cookie sheet: Preheat oven to 350°F. On cookie sheets lined with parchment paper or Silpat, spoon out the cookie dough in small 1-inch diameter balls (size of a large marble). Leave ample space because they do spread.

Add dry ingredients to butter mixture until well-combined. Stir in carrots, coconut, raisins, and oats and mix until just combined. Scoop 1” rounds of dough onto baking sheet. Bake until golden, 15-18 minutes. Let cool.

Bake: Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are just starting to brown. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes.

Make glaze: Beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until combined. Drizzle glaze over each cookie and let harden before serving.

TEE IT UP PRO’S CORNER Golf season is here! My Staff and I are looking forward to having fun and taking customer service to the next level! We have a great schedule of events planned and hope you all will find time to participate! The Men’s ACC is scheduled for April 16-20. Thank you to all the volunteers. Without you this event would not be possible. This will be the last year we are hosting, as the ACC has decided to move the event around to a different location every year going forward. ONSC had a great run and your support is appreciated. Men’s and Ladies opening days are just weeks away, so make sure you get out to the course and work on your game. The Golf Shop is looking to become a one-stop shop for all your golfing needs. I am improving the selection of apparel by bringing back Peter Millar to the golf shop! It may still be a little chilly outside, but we have it all, including bathing suits. Along with Peter Millar, I felt we needed to enhance the lake life feel as well by providing more lifestyle, off and on the course apparel for you. Thank you again for your continued support of the golf operation. We are happy to be here, and just as important the snacks are back in the golf shop!

JUSTIN MATHERS, PGA

GOLF TIPS AND DRILLS This time of year most golfers are just figuring out where their clubs have been over the last few months and after you hit a few balls your clubs are wondering who this imposter is that is using them. Both of you will settle in, but let’s make sure you are spending your time wisely. Half of your time should be spent from 50 yards in and the other half on full swing. I know, some of you are thinking I need a full swing to go 50 yards and I have no comment for that. Practice with a purpose; set small goals; make it fun. Here are some drills to help you. Chip 20 balls from different spots and count how many come within one club length of the hole. Pick out an area between two flags, hit 10 drives and keep score. Take a club that goes 150 to 175 yards and try to land it on every green up to the max yardage. Putt to tees, not holes. With putting I would say most issues start with the take-away. Put down a yard stick and see what happens when you draw it back. Is it opening? Is it closing? Are you adding loft? Are you de-lofting the putter? PGA and LPGA tour players average about four to eight degrees of change in their stoke while most amateurs have 24 to 40 degrees of change. HUGE difference when you need to land something in a 4.25” diameter area. My last suggestion is don’t practice until you get bad at it. If you hit two to three good shots, go to something else and leave on a good note!

WELCOME TO THE TEAM Old North State Club proudly welcomes our newest addition to the Golf Shop team, PGA Associate Caitlin Cannon. If you haven’t had a chance to meet Caitlin yet, where have you been hiding! Come on in to say hello and welcome her to the lake life.

FROM YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

REX HOSPITAL OPEN SAVE THE DATE: May 28-31, 2020 On May 28 – 31, the 33rd REX Hospital Open will take place at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation. In 2019, Sebastian Cappelen took home the REX Open trophy, shooting a new course record 21-under par to win by three shots! Last year’s tournament hosted more than 156 professional golfers from around the world and helped raise money for the new UNC REX Cancer Center.

THREE PUTT! I can only think of one other two-word phrase that may send more chills through the spine of a golfer and that’s GREENS AERIFICATION! Unfortunately it’s a crucial piece of the puzzle for promoting turf health. It has been almost six months since our last greens aerification and we need to maximize root development this spring. According to the USGA, our sand based greens should contain 45-65% solids, 20-30% macro pores and 15-25% micro pores. Aerification followed by sand topdressing is still the best tool for maintaining these ratios. The macro pore space promotes the movement of water/nutrients, air and thus roots down through the profile. Most of the water and nutrients moving through the macro pores isn’t plant available, it’s moving too quickly. It’s up to the micro pores to capture, hold, and supply the water/nutrient mix to the roots as they travel through the macro pore space that is created by aerification. Something to think about next time you walk onto an aerified green. CHRIS CHAPMAN

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER WORKOUT SHOES Whether your workout involves running, walking, sports or gym equipment, a decent sport shoe is a must. Injuries caused by inappropriate shoes can needlessly derail your fitness or weight loss attempts. Investing in a quality shoe can help you to prevent foot and ankle damage and make your workout a more pleasant and comfortable experience. TYPES OF SHOES A variety of sport shoes are on the market for every type of activity. Running shoes that have built-in shock absorbers are available for joggers and lightweight walking shoes are available for walkers. Aerobic shoes are lightweight and shock absorbing to prevent foot fatigue and to cushion the ball of the foot, which is put under pressure during aerobic exercise. Tennis shoes have flexible soles to protect your feet from the quick side-to-side movements of tennis. Cross-training shoes are also available. These are suitable if you perform a number of sport or exercise types in your workouts. BENEFITS OF A PROPER SHOE Choosing a proper shoe can help protect you against common injuries associated with your type of workout. Good shoes can lessen the impact of your step and cushion the foot from heavy landings. In addition, sport and exercise shoes can improve your performance, enabling, for example, quicker direction changes. REPLACING YOUR SHOES Worn out sport shoes do not provide your feet with adequate protection during your workout. According to American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, running shoes should be replaced after every 350 to 500 miles. If you run 20 miles a week, this means you should replace your shoes every 20 to 25 weeks. NETWELLNESS advises against judging the wear of your shoes from the treads on the bottom. Instead, check the mid-sole of the shoe as this will shoe damage sooner.

EAT RIGHT - 10 WAYS TO ENJOY MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES Building a healthy plate is easy when you make half of your plate fruits and vegetables. It’s also a great way to add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals and fiber. All this is packed into fruits and vegetables that are low in calories and fat. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables your daily goal. Try the following tips to enjoy more fruits and vegetables every day. 1.

Variety abounds when using vegetables as pizza toppings. Try broccoli, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini. 2. Mix up a breakfast smoothie made with low-fat milk, frozen strawberries and a banana. 3. Make a veggie wrap with roasted vegetables and low-fat cheese rolled in a whole-wheat tortilla. 4. Try crunchy vegetables instead of chips with your favorite low-fat salad dressing for dipping. 5. Grill colorful vegetable kabobs packed with tomatoes, green and red peppers, mushrooms and onions. 6. Add color to salads with baby carrots, grape tomatoes, spinach leaves or mandarin oranges. 7. Keep cut vegetables for mid-afternoon snacks, side dishes, or a quick nibble while waiting for dinner. Ready-to-eat favorites: red, green or yellow peppers, broccoli or cauliflower florets, carrots, celery sticks, cucumbers, snap peas or whole radishes. 8. Place colorful fruit where everyone can easily grab something for a snack-on-the run. Keep a bowl of fresh, just ripe whole fruit in the center of your kitchen or dining table. 9. Get saucy with fruit. Puree apples, berries, peaches or pears in a blender for a thick, sweet sauce on grilled or broiled seafood or poultry, or on pancakes, French toast or waffles. 10. Turn an omelet into a hearty meal by stuffing it with broccoli, carrots, peppers, tomatoes or onions and low-fat cheddar.
