CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER
A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
I don't think anyone saw what this year had in store for us just a few short weeks ago. As I write this message, I am uncertain what the conditions will be on May 1st. One thing is certain; all of us at Old North State Club are still striving to offer you the best experience possible. We have had to get rather creative in conducting our daily routine but the satisfaction and safety of our members and staff remain our top priority.
If a government authority asks you to stay at home and not travel far, is there a better place to be than the Old North State Club? While we are all hopefully going to get back to our normal routines sooner rather than later, I can certainly think of worse places to be quarantined. With stunning views of the lake, a championship golf course, tennis courts, and of course our stellar take out program, our staff has done a phenomenal job in keeping the club as open and operational as possible during the recent mandated shutdowns due to COVID-19.
I would like to thank everyone for your continued support of the club and staff. While we have had to alter, limit, or suspend some amenities we are constantly coming up with new ideas on how to provide you the most activity in a safe environment.
The great thing about golf and many other club activities are that they can be enjoyed with thousands of others (see The Wyndham Championship for example), or in solitary. We are fortunate that we have been able to remain open while many businesses have closed. As my wife is in health care and must report to work, I have spent most of my time working at home over the past few weeks, with our two sons. While I have not had an opportunity to play golf during this time, there are some other things I have been able to do outside of the home for a break, such as taking a walk, fishing in our neighborhood pond, or even just spending time outside grilling with the radio on. The fact is, these breaks from our current routines are extremely important for our physical and mental health. We are proud of the fact that we are able to provide a distraction for our members as they navigate these uncharted waters, and look forward to more mass gatherings and events when allowed.
We will get through this and better times are ahead. While some of the bigger club events have been affected by regulations brought on by COVID-19, we are constantly planning to host these events at the appropriate time. We will not let this defeat us and from everyone at Old North State Club we have every intention of making 2020 a fun and exciting year.
See you around the club! Brian Pabst
While we are not experiencing the surge in springtime memberships that we usually have, the interest is certainly there and we are actively accepting new members at the moment. If you have a friend, neighbor or colleague that you feel could use a break from the monotony of the current situation, please send them our way. We would love to discuss membership options with them so they can make an informed decision regarding membership when the time is right for them.
So for now, enjoy your time with family and we look forward to seeing all of you together again at the club very soon!
PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, events and hours of operation in this publication are subject to change. Watch your weekly club communications for the latest and most updated information.

Working in hospitality means our employees love to serve and connect with people. In these times, our staff misses these interactions dearly. The support we've received from the membership however, has been overwhelming. We just wanted to say, "Thank you." Thank you for every round of golf. Every to-go order. Every email, comment, like and share. We could not do what we love to do without you, and if anything, these trying times underscore the value of community. We are so very proud to serve you, and to have built a network of clubs with your support that sustains us all in good times and bad.

Cream Cheese, softened ¼ Cup Granulated Sugar 2 TSP Lemon Zest ½ TSP Vanilla Extract Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, or 325 degrees F low fan convection oven. TEE IT UP A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF I hope this finds everyone safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. Sheltering in place, sports being sidelined, schools closing, gloves and masks being worn just about everywhere was, and could be for quite some time, our new norm. I would like to thank everyone in healthcare, transportation, delivery, grocery stores, and every essential business for putting others ahead of themselves while keeping the United States running as effectively as possible. In times like these I believe we should surround ourselves with the most important aspects of life…family, health, safety and positivity. In my opinion the game of golf has been a bright spot which allowed for an outdoor activity that could keep people physically distanced but together at the same time. It took COVID-19 to remind us, but golf is for everybody! McConnell Golf has really stepped up to make sure all the CDC Guidelines were followed to create a safe environment that all the members of ONSC, and every other property, could enjoy.
In the midst of all of this we have seen a huge acceleration in activity. We set records for the months of March and April for the amount of rounds played! We had to restrict access to the golf shop, sanitize each golf car before and after it went out on the course, keep people 6 feet away from each other, promote single golf car riders, remove towels, sand bottles, coolers and I could not have gotten through all of this without all the help from my key staff of Adam Davey, PGA, Jared Hedrick, Aaron Richardson and Justin Austin! Although there seemed to be some sort of change each day, our team stayed positive and creative! If you can’t come in the shop, we decided to bring the golf shop to you. We made sure we did if safely as we promoted our SHOPITIZE (sanitize and then shop) pop up tent. We were able to tally the votes for the three hole stretch of 16,17, and 18 in order to create a long overdue name for what I believe is the best three hole finish in the Carolinas. David Sugg came up with “Eagles Claw” which edged out “Sunset Stretch” by a narrow margin! We will be placing a sign at the entrance of #16! Thank you for all the participation! ROUNDS FORE ROBIN Robin Mauney, a two-year staff member and the sandwich guru at the turnhouse found out she had cancer and had to begin radiation to shrink a tumor in order to have surgery to remove it. With the support of the membership and staff we organized an event to help raise money for her named Rounds FORE Robin. After putting our heads together we decided on a grill at the turn, a raffle, a beat the pro, and a donation to participate. The support from the entire community was something that you cannot explain. The atmosphere during that day was so incredible! We had multiple members step up with raffle items like plane rides, HVAC contracts, and artwork that brought this event to the next level. We were able to raise over $20,000 in one day for Robin. I could not be happier for her and more impressed with the community we are a part of! Thank you to the F&B Team who cooked over 200 cheeseburgers, and to our Agronomy Team who had the golf course in perfect condition! This will be a day I will never forget!
GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH "KEEP THE NOSE OF THE PLANE UP TO ENSURE TAKEOFF" I know the angle you should take to create loft and launch on your driver! Over the past few months I have been able to work with a fair amount of you on your driver swings. I have been seeing the same set-up and the same results. The driver is the longest club in your bag, and therefore you are able to create the highest club-head speed with it. Other than your putter it has the least amount of loft of any other club in the bag.
Should the driver swing imitate the iron swing? Yes and No! Balance and finish should be exactly the same, but set-up and angle of attack are going to be quite different. Imagine positioning a club with 10.5 degrees of loft in the back of your stance like you would a sand-wedge that has 56 degrees of loft. If you are swinging correctly the golf club is turning (not lifting) as you create an arcing motion of the club. The club on your downswing is moving towards the ground to your back foot first, through the middle part of your stance and then raises up as it exits up and around the other side of your body. If the ball is back in your stance and the club is coming down you will make the 10.5 degree loft almost a negative loft and drive the ball immediately into the ground. If the ball is in the middle of your stance you may barely get it airborne. If the ball is towards the front part of your stance you are able to make contact as the club exits on the UP SWING creating a high-launch. Now that you have the idea of where to put the ball in your stance, you need to know how to position your body for a “TAKE-OFF.” Think of your shoulders like a plane about to take flight. For right handed golfers the left shoulder should be considered the nose of the plane. If that left shoulder dips down during the swing, so will the club face and then the ball. If you widen your stance, keep a little extra weight behind the ball, and make certain your left shoulder stays high through-out the swing the ball certainly has a better chance to arrive at it's destination.
As always, thanks for your support! See you on the course. Justin Mathers

SUPER'S CORNER - NEW FAN INSTALLATION As we approach and prepare for summer, we will be mounting fans on two additional greens this year – holes #7 and #10 – and rotating a portable fan between holes #2 and #14. The consistent air flow that fans provide helps to cool the canopy and minimize disease pressure by reducing prolonged leaf wetness after those steamy afternoon summer storms. BONUS – they do a pretty good job of cooling off the golfers as well!
Please note that greens venting will take place Monday, June 15 and Tuesday, June 16. Thanks for your support of Old North State Club and the agronomy team. See you on the course! Chris Chapman
