CLUB UPDATE

A NOTE FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER

Happy Fall Old North State! This summer was definitely different than years passed but we were still able to offer a lot of fun and safe activities at the Club that we hope provided you and your families with great memories. From a fun 4th of July that finished off with an impressive fireworks show, challenging the “Golf Boys” on the pickleball courts, indulging in a blue ribbon margarita court side, to toasting with friends at the Summer Wine Dinner, it is safe to say that living the lake life is good! As we look ahead to fall we will continue to offer as much as possible during these times of uncertainty. While we may have to adjust some of our traditional events or even postpone a few, all of us at ONSC will continue to work together to provide you with the best experience possible at the club. Be sure to follow us on social media (we are quickly approaching 1,000 followers on instagram), and to keep an eye out for club emails and announcements as we keep you informed and up to date on everything ONSC. Stay safe and together we will get through this. See you around the club! Brian Pabst

A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR To say 2020 has been a year unlike any other would be an understatement. There is no need to list all of the challenges we have all faced, as the list would simply adjust and change daily! Let’s throw in what is sure to be a highly anticipated presidential election along with many important local races, and the fall is shaping up to be just as interesting as the first 2/3 of the year! Although there has been much change and uncertainty, the one thing we can count on is the sun coming up daily and the beauty of the lake. Although I do not have an office at the club, my unofficial motto most days is have laptop, will travel! – so when I am at the club, I always look for a room with a view to do my work. During stressful times I sometimes find myself gazing out onto the lake, losing myself in its beauty, daydreaming of being on a boat with family and friends. That’s the beauty of being at the Old North State Club; yes, operations are different from the norm at the moment due to social distancing and safety precautions, but the lake is still there, in all of its glory! I read a post from a friend’s social media account lately that really stuck with me. To paraphrase, “Your track record of making it through bad days is 100% keep your head up and keep going!” I took that to heart, and even through things are different and out of sorts at the moment, we will return to normal, hopefully sooner than later. And if you have to spend time and socially distance somewhere, I can think of far worse places than the Old North State Club and Badin Lake! We would love to share our club with your friends and colleagues so they may join us – we have newer non-resident and regional membership offerings in which they may be interested. Please reach out to me if I can be of assistance by sending membership information to someone on your behalf.

Keep your heads up, enjoy the fall (my favorite of the year!), and I look forward to seeing you around the club! Chad Flowers

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS JIM HERMAN WINS THIRD TITLE AT WYNDHAM; MOVES FROM 192ND TO 54TH IN FEDEXCUP POINTS

Herman had two birdies and an eagle — from 59 feet — on his first five holes to catch up to Kim. Then, trailing Horschel by a stroke, Herman stuck his approach to No. 17 to just over 3 feet for a birdie. to reach 21 under. He gained the lead when Horschel missed a 12-footer for par on 16.

Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his third PGA TOUR title and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, shooting a 7under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel. Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole. The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259. Horschel closed with a 65. He had a final chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup. Herman got into the FedExCup Playoffs, jumping from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 spots. He hoisted a trophy for the second straight season and third time since 2017. Si Woo Kim, the third-round leader, had a 70 to tie for third at 18 under with Kevin Kisner (64), Webb Simpson (65) and Doc Redman (68).

It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut. He followed that up with a careerlow 61 on Saturday to get into striking distance before taking the victory. Horschel looked as if he was the one to rally as he moved from three behind Kim to the lead with a birdie-eagle- birdie run on the front nine while Kim struggled with a double bogey and a bogey over his first eight holes. Kim was a birdie machine with 21 birdies and a hole in one the first three rounds. But he stumbled out of the gate and a pair of bad drives cost him his first win since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017. He drove right into a hazzard of thick grass and, despite six people searching, could not find his shot. Kim made double bogey to fall from the top. Two holes later, Kim would up near a cart path bridge for a bogey to fall four shots off the lead.

FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN PROGRAM As the host for many charities and donors to numerous others, McConnell Golf is excited to contribute and engage through our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. Through a strong and supportive effort made by our collective membership and staff, we strive to become a driving force in the local community where our clubs reside. Aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily, we have aligned ourselves with a variety of organizations and various methods of giving back. This program is designed with all age groups in mind so that it will be a learning tool for our youth, a team building activity for our staff, and a friendship building platform to strengthen our connection with our membership. Recently, the Country Club of Asheville raised over $2,800 for United Way School Supply Drive. Providence Country Club is also taking part in supporting our local schools with a supply drive sponsored by Classroom Central. Way to go team and thank you to all who contributed! A NOTE FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE CHEF

Welcome home! It’s been great seeing you back in the building! It is hard to believe fall is already here considering how fast this year has seemed to go by. However, fall is a wonderful time for food! I love the transition from the light dishes of summer into the heartier cuisine of the fall. Pumpkin spice everything, baked apples, root vegetables, gnocchi’s, chowders, and football (hopefully). I hope you all look forward to the fall menu we will roll out in September.

I know 2020 has been weird and challenging at times for many but some positives have come out of it, like the birth of my wife and I’s first child. Maverick Alexander Gordils born at 7:46am on 8/17/2020. He decided he wanted us to share the same birthday! With Warm Regards, Ron Gordils

COOKIES OF THE MONTH COOKIES OF THE MONTH

SEPTEMBER: PECAN CHOCOLATE CHIP DELIGHTS James Patterson III - Sedgefield Country Club

List of Ingredients: 1 Cup Unsalted Butter 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Brown Sugar, packed 1 Cup Vegetable Oil 1 Large Egg 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 TSP Salt 1 TSP Vanilla 1 1/4 Cups Quick Cooking Oats 3 ½ Cups AP Flour 3/4 Cup Chopped Pecans 3/4 Cup Mini Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips 1 1/4 ¼ Cups Lightly Crushed Cornflakes Directions: Note: dough requires chilling. Cream butter and sugars in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Cream until light and fluffy. You can also use a hand mixer. Add oil and stir until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mix until smooth, then stir in the salt and baking soda. Mix in oats and flour until just mixed. Stir in chocolate chips, pecans and cornflakes. Scoop 2 tablespoon balls of cookie dough onto a cookie sheet covered in wax or parchment paper. No need to spread the balls out, you’re just going to chill them. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least one hour. (If you chill longer than 4 hours you may need to let them warm up a few minutes on the counter before baking.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silpat baking mats. Place cookies 2” apart on prepared cookie sheets. Lightly press down with the palm of your hand. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the bottoms just start to turn golden brown. Cool at least 5 minutes on cookie sheet before removing to rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

OCTOBER: GLUTEN-FREE CORNMEAL THUMBPRINT COOKIES Michael Monahan - Grande Dunes Member Club

A startling number of people these days continue to report gluten sensitivities, and gluten-free baking has become a “subset” of baking. I love the flavor and texture of these tender gluten-free cornmeal-based cookies, and the way the raspberry flavor complements the corn. Yield: 3 dozen “Bite sized” cookies List of Ingredients: 1 ½ Cups All-Purpose Gluten-Free Rice Flour 1 Cup Yellow Cornmeal 1 TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Table Salt 1 ¾ sticks Unsalted Butter, softened, plus more for pans ¾ Cup Firmly Packed Light-Brown Sugar 2 Large Eggs 1 TSP Vanilla Extract ½ Cup Seedless Raspberry Preserves (or jelly of your choice) Directions: Preheat oven to 350° and set two racks to the middle positions, with space in between. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper (or grease lightly with butter). In a medium-size bowl, whisk together the rice flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. Using a standing or handheld mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar in a large bowl until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat. Add the dry ingredients and beat until smooth. Portion the dough into 1 inch balls, and arrange them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Press each with your thumb; then fill each depression with a teaspoon of raspberry jam. Bake until just barely golden brown on the bottom, 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through.

TEE IT UP A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF Greetings from the Lake,

I hope this finds everyone doing well during all the uncertainty circling us daily. I have an 11 year old daughter, and she recently watched Frozen 2 for the 10th time, and she keeps singing “Into the Unknown”, and all of sudden it came to me that this is the perfect theme song for 2020. What I do know is that we continue to see a huge uptick in rounds of golf, which we are very excited about despite closing early during the week for Our Putting Surface Preservation Plan. That plan allowed for reduced traffic during the hottest parts of the day. Chris Chapman and his agronomy team have done a fabulous job this year and should be acknowledged.

A NOTE FROM YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT Fall is finally here! This is my favorite season and I believe the golf course loves it as well. The greens are enjoying the cool mornings and the Bermuda is still getting some heat in the afternoons. Typically October is our busiest month and that certainly appears to be the case again this year. I appreciate your patience as we successfully dealt with the stress of the summer heat on the greens. I would also like to thank our facility maintenance department for being available at a moments notice to

numerous electrical repairs on the course. Our main priority is to get the greens back to a challenging speed for you and your guests to enjoy! Chris Chapman

Although we decided to cancel the Men’s and Ladies Member-Guests we still will provide an exciting and competitive Fall golf schedule. Please make sure to save the dates for all of our upcoming events. The remaining events can be found in this newsletter, in the golf shop, and inside the golf cars. Thank you again for all the support throughout the 2020 golf season. I am extremely proud to be the Director of Golf here at Old North State Club! See you at the Club, Justin Mathers, PGA

GIVE PIN HIGH A TRY! I have been fortunate enough to be able to play a few rounds of golf with some of you, whether playing lessons, or in a group game. I have made it a point to pay attention to club selections. Over the past few months I can say without any hesitation 90% of golfers I have played with will leave the ball below the pin, or short of the green with their approach shot. I realize there is always that pin position that you need to “creep” up on, or just make sure you have an uphill putt, and that going flag hunting isn’t the best idea. In my opinion, and even in my own case I select the club that if I “FLUSH” it will get to the pin. I know it’s hard to believe but I, along with you all don’t always “FLUSH” my irons, or wedges for that matter. So let’s do the math…let’s say you are a 18 handicap, which is getting around the course making bogeys you most likely “FLUSH” 1 or 2 irons per 9 holes. That being said 2-4 exact distances per round. This is not uncommon, and why you come up short of the green. Going forward if you are 150 yards to the flag and that is your “FLUSHED” 7 iron your percentages of hitting it that exact distance rank somewhere around 10-15%. That being said I would rather you add 5 or 10 yards to that distance and decide on your club after that. Flying the ball to the hole or even beyond the hole a little can take out lots of trouble that course designers strategically place short of the greens. In recap, You don’t “FLUSH” your irons the distance you would like them to go as often as you think. Please add a few yards to the actual distance or try to take the extra club and realize there is a 90% chance you will mishit it the correct distance. Keep enjoying golf! Justin Mathers, PGA

MARINA, POOL & NEWS FROM THE NET

A NOTE FROM YOUR DOCKMASTER Fall is starting to show itself! We are starting to recede on those sweltering high 90s for a more comfortable mid 80s. But not to fret, the marina will still be here to handle any of your boating needs! Fall is my favorite time of year on the lake. It's not too hot but still warm enough to swim, the crowds tend to thin out and with our ample Uwharrie Forest, the annual leaf changing rivals any in the state! If you have a boat I highly recommend taking an evening cruise, if not rent one from us! As the sun sets, a gorgeous golden orange, mixed with the yellow and red leaves, it reminds you why you call this lake home! Also take advantage of the off season and put a hook in the water. I have always found that when the lake calms down the fish always bite more frequently. If you are going to be finished with your boat early this year give us a call and set up a winterization so your vessel is safely stored for the colder winter temps. Our hours of operation will change to our fall schedule after Labor Day. We will be open Wednesday-Sunday 9am to 5pm. If you have any questions or need any service, call us @ 336-461-4456. As always have a swell day!

FITNESS TIPS

EXERCISE AND STRESS: GET MOVING TO MANAGE STRESS Exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Being active can boost your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries.

You know that exercise does your body good, but you're too busy and stressed to fit it into your routine. Hold on a second — there's good news when it comes to exercise and stress. Virtually any form of exercise, from aerobics to yoga, can act as a stress reliever. If you're not an athlete or even if you're out of shape, you can still make a little exercise go a long way toward stress management. Discover the connection between exercise and stress relief — and why exercise should be part of your stress management plan. PUT EXERCISE AND STRESS RELIEF TO WORK FOR YOU A successful exercise program begins with a few simple steps. Consult with your doctor. If you haven't exercised for some time and you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine. Walk before you run. Build up your fitness level gradually. Excitement about a new program can lead to overdoing it and possibly even injury. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends getting at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (such as brisk walking or swimming) or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (such as running). You also can do a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. Also, incorporate strength training exercises at least twice a week. Do what you love. Virtually any form of exercise or movement can increase your fitness level while decreasing your stress. The most important thing is to pick an activity that you enjoy. Examples include walking, stair climbing, jogging, bicycling, yoga, tai chi, gardening, weightlifting and swimming.

OLD NORTH STATE OF MIND

Pencil it in. Although your schedule may necessitate a morning workout one day and an evening activity the next, carving out some time to move every day helps you make your exercise program an ongoing priority. STICK WITH IT Starting an exercise program is just the first step. Here are some tips for sticking with a new routine or reinvigorating a tired workout: Set SMART goals. Write down SMART goals — specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-limited goals. If your primary goal is to reduce stress in your life and recharge your batteries, your specific goals might include committing to walking during your lunch hour three times a week or, if needed, finding a baby sitter to watch your children so that you can slip away to attend a cycling class. Find a friend. Knowing that someone is waiting for you to show up at the gym or the park can be a powerful incentive. Working out with a friend, co-worker or family member often brings a new level of motivation and commitment to your workouts. Change up your routine. If you've always been a competitive runner, take a look at other less competitive options that may help with stress reduction, such as Pilates or yoga classes. As an added bonus, these kinder, gentler workouts may enhance your running while also decreasing your stress.· Exercise in increments. Even brief bouts of activity offer benefits. For instance, if you can't fit in one 30-minute walk, try three 10minute walks instead. Interval training, which entails brief (60 to 90 seconds) bursts of intense activity at almost full effort, is being shown to be a safe, effective and efficient way of gaining many of the benefits of longer duration exercise. What's most important is making regular physical activity part of your lifestyle. Whatever you do, don't think of exercise as just one more thing on your to-do list. Find an activity you enjoy — whether it's an active tennis match or a meditative meander down to a local park and back — and make it part of your regular routine. Any form of physical activity can help you unwind and become an important part of your approach to easing stress.
