MANAGER'S MESSAGE

DEAR PROVIDENCE MEMBERS, I wish to congratulate and thank many of our wonderful Members for a “glass half full” attitude! A smile and positive spirit, go a long way in today’s world. It is amazing to witness the amount of activity we’re seeing in golf, tennis, pool and camps. The leadership team at PCC has been nothing short of spectacular. They arrive daily with genuine enthusiasm and hospitality, I am so grateful to work with these awesome professionals. Our Curbside Take out is breaking all records. Chef and his team have really stepped up their creativity and the resulting feedback has been great. I commend Steve Windham on brokering some unbelievable wine deals, connecting some of the best west coast wineries with NC distributors. Many of these special wines are priced 20% or better than you’ll find in any local wine shop. So many Members have been enjoying his efforts and now is a great time to re-stock ye ole wine cellar! We are open for indoor dining in Table 16 on Friday and Saturday evenings, rest assured, we are following every guideline and protocol. We have received tremendous support for how we’ve been handling all CDC and NCDHHS guidelines at the pool and we practice that same mentality inside with our restaurant. Despite the slow return to indoor dining, those coming to Table 16 have remarked on our much improved consistency with both food quality and service. So please come test our efforts and make sure to call for reservations in advance, so we are properly prepared for your arrival. As much as the pool has become a recreational, exercise and outdoor safe haven, we are working with our pool management company to hopefully extend our pool season. We must have proper coverage in order to extend the season. Although many students may remain home, Covid is still a major issue when it comes to personnel. You’ve probably heard of Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center shutting down due to several of their staff testing positive to Covid. We will keep you apprised as to our progress on this mutually important opportunity. I had a professor in college who used to say, “There is nothing more permanent than change”. This phrase keeps repeating in my mind as we go through this pandemic. The challenge is to stay positive throughout all these adjustments and changes in daily living. We will come out of this eventually and I want to look back and be proud of how we all handled the chaos. Your team at PCC are all here because we enjoy helping people have fun and we’re proud to be part of the solution. #Staypccpositive As always, I look forward to seeing you at the Club! Sincerely, HOWARD S. MURPHY, JR. CCM Corporate Director of Culinary Operations Providence Country Club General Manager

CLUBHOUSE MANAGER'S MESSAGE AND EVENTS Dear Members, Fall has always been my favorite time of the year. It marks the start of football season, cool nights, and the end of 100 degree days! I know this fall will look much different than any before it. With homes turning into offices and classrooms, online meetings, and social distancing all being part of our “new normal” we all have to adjust and find new versions of some of our favorite pastimes. We all have to stay flexible and adjust day-to-day based on executive orders while maintaining our respective lifestyles. Our PCC Team has done a great job at being innovative and providing its Members with safe and socially distanced events that allow them to still enjoy their club. Here at PCC we look to bring individuals onto our Team that naturally have a heart for hospitality. Our primary goal is to provide the social settings and opportunities for our Members to engage in a lifestyle that is social and fun. You can imagine how opposite the past 6 months has been for many of us internally. As I mentioned in my last newsletter, we are a resilient people! We will persevere and continue to move forward while keeping PCC a safe haven for its Members and their Guests. We are planning on hosting several events this upcoming fall. We will start hosting live music at the West Pavilion on Friday nights with food and beverage specials. Labor Day at the pool will look at little different this year but we will still have a fun time at the pool. We are teaming up with Caymus to host an elegant wine dinner featuring several of their new selections which we plan on hosting on our outdoor veranda with limited seating. In October we will be hosting our annual Father-Child Campout on the front lawn and Mommy Mixer at the West Pavilion. We are currently working on a new game plan for Spooktacular this year that will also look much different than in years past. More information to come. We look forward to seeing you all around the property this fall whether it is at one of our events, West Pavilion, indoor A la Carte dining room, or even coming through our drive through pick-up (which continues to do extremely well). As always, thank you all for your continued support and encouraging words of gratitude that you share. It is part of what keeps us motivated! STEVE WINDHAM Clubhouse Manager

GOLF FORE ALL

FROM THE LINKS We hope everyone enjoyed a chance to play some golf and relax during the Summer months. We’ve had a lot of fun teaching Junior Camps and getting to work with many kids as so many other activities were cancelled. Let’s continue the trend of growing the game both with Juniors but also families getting a chance to play together. Golf has been a fantastic escape since early 2020 and we hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy the outdoors. As we move toward the Fall we hope to continue seeing so many of you enjoy the game.

GREENS AND GROUNDS PCC GOLF COURSE It is hard to believe it is already September. The summer has been a very quick and busy summer out on the course. The process of having to deal with whatever is the new normal, everyone is still trying to adjust to the new normal. Some of our new protocols we have in place at the maintenance shop is we take everyone’s temperature when they arrive for the start of their shift. We are working with staff since the school year is a little different than in the past. We will all get through the new normal. I am just like everyone that I miss the old normal, but we all will adjust to the new normal. The months of September and October are transitioning months. A great time to come out and enjoy the course. The golf course staff will have some adjustment from mowing grass to leaf season. We will be dealing with leaves from September till December. The cultural practices that we are doing on the greens will start to change. The amount of sand we will be top dressing the greens with will decrease, the timing will also decrease. During the growing months, we are topdressing weekly. As we move into September, we may be topdressing every other week instead of weekly. Our verti cutting schedule will start to slow down since the grass is not growing as fast. These two cultural practices are driven by temperature, if we have a long summer than our top dressing and verti cutting will continue weekly. The fall also brings the golf course staff into over seeding the range tees and the lawns at the clubhouse. The tentative time for the process is October 19th. We are waiting later this year to make sure we have most of our member events behind and the temperatures will have cooled down. I hope everyone can come and enjoy playing PCC. Chris Parham Golf Course Superintendent

TOPDRESSING Topdressing sand being applied onto the greens. The benefit of topdressing greens is to keep the putting surface rolling true, firm, fast, as well as reduce compaction, keep a finer texture leaf, increase efficacy of fertilizer/fungicide and reduce disease. It is applied and workded into the green by the roller with brushes down.

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS

JIM HERMAN WINS THIRD TITLE AT WYNDHAM; MOVES FROM 192ND TO 54TH IN FEDEXCUP POINTS

Herman had two birdies and an eagle — from 59 feet — on his first five holes to catch up to Kim. Then, trailing Horschel by a stroke, Herman stuck his approach to No. 17 to just over 3 feet for a birdie. to reach 21 under. He gained the lead when Horschel missed a 12footer for par on 16.

Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his third PGA TOUR title and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, shooting a 7-under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel. Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole. The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259.

It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut. He followed that up with a careerlow 61 on Saturday to get into striking distance before taking the victory. Horschel looked as if he was the one to rally as he moved from three behind Kim to the lead with a birdie-eagle- birdie run on the front nine while Kim struggled with a double bogey and a bogey over his first eight holes.

Horschel closed with a 65. He had a final chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup.

Kim was a birdie machine with 21 birdies and a hole in one the first three rounds. But he stumbled out of the gate and a pair of bad drives cost him his first win since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017.

Herman got into the FedExCup Playoffs, jumping from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 spots. He hoisted a trophy for the second straight season and third time since 2017.

He drove right into a hazzard of thick grass and, despite six people searching, could not find his shot. Kim made double bogey to fall from the top.

Si Woo Kim, the third-round leader, had a 70 to tie for third at 18 under with Kevin Kisner (64), Webb Simpson (65) and Doc Redman (68).

Two holes later, Kim would up near a cart path bridge for a bogey to fall four shots off the lead.

FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN PROGRAM As the host for many charities and donors to numerous others, McConnell Golf is excited to contribute and engage through our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. Through a strong and supportive effort made by our collective membership and staff, we strive to become a driving force in the local community where our clubs reside. Aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily, we have aligned ourselves with a variety of organizations and various methods of giving back. This program is designed with all age groups in mind so that it will be a learning tool for our youth, a team building activity for our staff, and a friendship building platform to strengthen our connection with our membership. Recently, the Country Club of Asheville raised over $2,800 for United Way School Supply Drive. Providence Country Club is also taking part in supporting our local schools with a supply drive sponsored by Classroom Central. Way to go team and thank you to all who contributed! OCTOBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH: GLUTEN-FREE CORNMEAL THUMBPRINT COOKIES Michael Monahan – Grande Dunes A startling number of people these days are reporting gluten sensitivities, and gluten-free baking has become a “subset” of baking. I love the flavor and texture of these tender gluten-free cornmeal-based cookies, and the way the raspberry flavor complements the corn. INGREDIENTS 1 ½ Cups All-Purpose Gluten-Free Rice Flour 1 Cup Yellow Cornmeal (Gluten-Free) 1 TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Table Salt 1 ¾ sticks Unsalted Butter, softened, plus more for pans ¾ Cup Firmly Packed Light-Brown Sugar 2 Large Eggs 1 TSP Vanilla Extract ½ Cup Seedless Raspberry Preserves (or jelly of your choice) DIRECTIONS Preheat your oven to 350° and set 2 racks to the middle positions, with space in between. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (or grease lightly with butter). In a medium-size bowl, whisk together the rice flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. Using a standing or handheld mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar in a large bowl until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat. Add the dry ingredients and beat until smooth. Portion the dough into 1 inch balls, and arrange them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Press each with your thumb; then fill each depression with a teaspoon of raspberry jam. Bake until just barely golden brown on the bottom, 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through.
