Porters Neck Members, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Weekend. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite time of the year, not because of the food, but it gives many of us time to reconnect with family and friends along with reflecting on the year’s past. At the club, we were thankful to welcome many of our members and guests along with over 70 marines for our Thanksgiving Buffet. I want to personally thank all the members that volunteered to sponsor a marine for this event, "Operation Sempus Gratus", along with the families that hosted at their homes. This was our first year inviting Marines from Camp Lejeune and we were honored to welcome almost 120 Marines to our community and club. A special thank you also to Noreen and Bob Buss, Tom and Bev Conant, Lou DiGiusto and Barb Dalto, who were instrumental in coordinating this event along with being the welcome committee once the Marines arrived. Special thanks are also in order for Alexis Wall, who assisted us in contacting WWAY. We look forward to making this an annual tradition and hopefully will be able to welcome even more next year. If you haven't seen the news story, we invite you to do so by visiting the Porters Neck Country Club YouTube channel. As the holidays are upon us, our team has been busy decorating the club for the season. Specifically, I want to recognize Deb Scuorzo and Terrie McElwain that have not only been hanging the decorations but have also created many of the decorations that you will see around the club. (I’ll take credit for putting the star on the top of the Christmas tree.) The team is looking forward to welcoming you as we celebrate the holidays and the club's 30th year anniversary on December 4th. The 2021 Gala will definitely be the event of the year with almost 250 members in attendance. We will also be bringing in the New Year with a special New Year’s Eve Dinner and a New Year’s Day Brunch.

In the coming weeks we have started or completed several projects throughout the club. POND FOUNTAIN & RESTORATION: This week we plan to finish our pond restoration project on #9. Our goal is to install erosion control along with improving the pond esthetics. A fountain will also be installed and aquatic plants along the pond edge. TENNIS LIGHTS: We installed new LED lights on tennis court #7 as a test sample. If these are well received then we plan to install them on the remaining courts next year. TREE WORK: Tree work on the golf course will continue through the month. Unfortunately, the oak tree on hole #17 could not be saved and had to be removed. We will look into a replacement in the coming year. PROPERTY BORDERING #9: Next week, Plantation Village begins groundbreaking for their new development project. Many have asked if the property next to #9 tee box is being developed. This property is owned by Plantation Village and will be used as a staging area and access for construction equipment. PNCC will provide them access through our property behind hole #9 and down our maintenance road. We are always happy to be good neighbors and help our fellow community members. As always, I thank you for your support and I wish you a Happy Holiday and the very best in the New Year. Best Wishes, Jason Seehafer General Manager, Porters Neck Country Club

Q: My golf ball accidentally hit another player in my group after I played a stroke from the fairway on Hole #5. The ball came to rest in the rough. What is the ruling? A: There is no penalty to anyone. This is true whether the ball hits the player that made the stroke, the player's partner, an opponent in match play, another player in stroke play, or any other person or outside influence. This is also true if the stroke was made from a teeing area, a bunker, or a penalty area. In your situation, the ball must be played from where it came to rest. POST | GOLF

Turf Notes
By: Chris Parham, PNCC Golf Course Superintendent
Seasons greetings from the golf course staff! It’s typical at the end of the year, to stop and think about the past year. Wow, we have had a great 2021 at PNCC! Just a little recap: Re-did the front circle of the clubhouse removed old landscaped and took the approach less is more. We added a nice flag pole at the clubhouse. Enhanced the entire driving range, made the tee one level and added target greens and bunkers out on the range. Built a short game, practice area that turned out extremely well.
Improved our turf maintenance equipment by adding more equipment and replacing a lot of older equipment. Upgraded the irrigation system along with a new Watertronics pump station, as well. Added backup generators on holes 4, 8 and at the maintenance shop. This will keep the main pumps out on the course running during a storm event.
These were the big items for 2021, we made stride through out the course as well with overall turf quality improvement. We address some tree issues through out the year along with reducing some over grown beds. We are excited about the possibilities of 2022! I hope everyone has a great Holiday season and a great New Year. See you out on the course!
2021 Men's Member- Guest We had a great turnout this year with a full field of 60 teams. The food prepared by JP and his staff was plentiful and outstanding. After five matches, we took 10 flight winning teams and 3 wild card teams into a 4 hole shootout, eliminating teams as we go either by score or by chip-off. We were running out of daylight near the end, and after hole 8 we decided to take 3 teams to the last hole. The teams of Tom and TJ Bugbee, Martin Haller and Eugene Fiama and Jan and Josh Gustafson played number 9 in near darkness. All teams tied and entered into a chip-off to determine a winner. We had to pull a truck near the 9th green to light up the green so we could see. Jan and Josh Gustafson had the closest chip to win the 2021 Men’s Member-Guest. Congratulations to Jan and Josh and all the flight winners!

7 Tips for Winter Golf
1. BE PREPARED If you are serious about playing good golf this winter, you need to prepare properly. A good, modern, well-fitted waterproof suit will have all the crucial modern technology to keep you dry in the rain. A good lightweight design will also enable you to make your normal swing, even if it gets cold. Also dress in layers to be prepared for cold, windy conditions. Having warm, wind proof outerwear is crucial when playing around the coast in winter.
2. ADD STABILITY Creating a stable hitting platform is important whenever you play but it becomes imperative in the winter. With soft conditions under foot, try widening your stance a little on all of your shots. This lowers your center of gravity and will help your stability. By doing this you might not create quite so much speed but the quality of contact should be good enough to make up for it. Also, ensure you regularly clean any mud and grass off the bottom of your shoes.
3. TEE IT UP One of the great things about winter golf is that you actually have more control of your ball. The ball should hit and stick wherever it lands making the fairways and greens much bigger targets than in the summer. To maximize your distance off the tee, you need to increase your carry. That’s why it is well worth teeing the ball up a fraction. Set a little more weight on your back foot at address and make a normal swing from there. These minor tweaks will help you find a few crucial extra yards.
POST | GOLF
4. CORE MUSCLES Whenever you are playing in the cold, it is imperative that you keep your core muscles warm. Arriving on the first tee without so much as a practice swing will cause a shorter and more compact swing to send the ball off to the right of your target. Do some core stretches before you start and try to make a full upper body rotation on your first swing. This will help you square the clubface and hit the fairway. 5. CARRY YARDAGES Any golfer, professional or amateur, looking to play well needs to know his or her yardages. However, this does not mean having an idea of the total distance you hit every club in the bag. Instead you need to know your carry numbers – the rest is down to ground conditions. If it is particularly cold, you may need to take at least 5 or 10 yards off your normal carry yardages to compensate. 6. CALM SWINGS Whenever you are playing in windy conditions, take a little speed off your normal swing. Make a full body rotation but swing smoothly. Not only will this improve your control but less speed equals less backspin. A flatter ball flight that doesn’t balloon in the wind will actually offer you much more distance. 7. BREAK ON WET GREENS It goes without saying that wet greens will be slower than when they are dry. However, what people often forget is that putts will not break quite so much. As such, you need to be able to adjust your mind-set on the greens. Aim straighter and be a little more aggressive with the pace than you usually would be. This approach will also help you find a stronger roll to cope with any imperfections on the green.

holes. Here are a few hints to help your groups with pace of play:
automatically take your putter with you.
New golfers or high handicap players should use the forward tees. Allow faster groups to play through and minimize practice swings. Put a ball mark repair tool, two ball makers and tees into your pocket at the first tee. Take the divot bottle that is on the cart, to your next shot so that you do not have to go back for it after the shot. Carry a spare ball in your pocket so that you do not have to go back to your bag when you need to hit a provisional ball. Take more than one club to your next shot. If you are the cart driver, drop off your passenger at their ball before proceeding to your own ball. If you are the passenger, take more than one club to your shot and proceed down the fairway after your shot. Do not wait for the driver to pick you up. POST | GOLF
to where you hit your last shot. Limit your search for a lost ball to three minutes.
Leave golf bags at a point beside the green that is en route to the next tee. Park golf carts to the side or behind the green so that when you finish putting you will be moving away from the field of play and towards the next tee. Study your line of putt while others are putting. Continue putting until your ball is holed. If you are the first in the cup, pick up the flagstick so that you can replace it after the last person has putted out. Mark scorecards on the next tee box, not on or next to the putting green. On shots where players who cannot reach the green should hit when ready. Always keep up with the group ahead of you.
