Old North State Porters Neck members followed up a beautiful day of golf with dinner on the patio at our McConnell Golf sister property, Old North State. Gorgeous!

Full Circle Moment Twenty-three years ago, Porters Neck General Manager Jason Seehafer got his start as one of the very first caddies at Whistling Straits. In what can only be described as a 'full circle moment', he returned this past weekend, with his dad, and witnessed the U.S. team win the 2021 Ryder Cup by the largest margin of victory in modern history of the event. WOW. In one of the photos, you can see the cart barn where Jason worked!

Notes From the Pro By: Robert Loper PNCC Head Golf Professional

Fall is upon us and with the changing of the season brings better golfing weather. October and November are 2 of the best months to be outdoors. Needless to say the golf course will be much busier than it has recently. So, it’s important that members manage their tee times efficiently so that there will be ample opportunities for all members to enjoy the course. Please don’t make unneeded times and cancel yourself as soon as you know you are not going to play. Please remember that pull carts are to be no closer than 30 feet or 10 yards from the green. When we are cart path only, please keep all 4 tires on the path at all times. Please no carts in the pine straw areas, those places may be wet also, and we see many ruts from carts leaving those areas. We are looking forward to the better weather and hope to see you out enjoying the course this month.

SHORT COURSE SCHEDULE Special thanks to McConnell Golf for this beautiful new addition to Porters Neck!

Monday Closed All Day for Maintenance

For safety reasons, we ask that members DO NOT practice while the course is open for Play and please DO NOT attempt to play the course when it is time for Practice only. When the short course is open for play, please only tee off from the tee markers.

Wednesday, Friday and Sunday

On most “play” days, we are going to only use 3 holes. The big green directly behind the range will be a dedicated practice green that will remain available for practice during “play”.

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

DRIVING RANGE SCHEDULE Monday

Tuesday – Sunday

Closed All Day

7:30am – 6:30pm

7:30am-2pm: Practice Only 2pm – 3pm: Clean up and set up 3pm: Short Course Play Only(Bring Your Own Balls)

7:30am: Close -Practice Only All Day

We will be monitoring usage of the short game area and driving range and make adjustments to the schedule as needed. This schedule will change when the days begin to get shorter in the fall.

We will be using a rope on the range to help define the hitting area each day. We ask that you always hit in front of the rope. The driving range will close every evening at 6:30pm. The addition of multiple targets and bunkers have made cleaning the range more time consuming.

Full Golf members and their guests have access to the practice facilities before a round of golf. If a Full Golf member brings a guest to use the range and/or play the short course, the guest fee will be $15.

All 10-12 flags on the target areas will be all white and have reflectors for rangefinder use. There will be no yardage markings on the range. We have added some Laser Link rangefinders on the range that will look like birdhouses. These are available to anyone that may need the use of a rangefinder.

Sports and Clubhouse members DO NOT have access to the short game area and driving range unless they are playing golf. We are limiting usage due to the demand of golf course usage and practice facilities. We will evaluate this policy at the end of the year

Ask the 'Rule Guy'!

Special thanks to PNCC member and CGA Rules Official, Mr. Guy Beale!

Q: My tee shot on Hole #3 came to rest in a terrible lie right of the cart path. I declared the ball unplayable and dropped it under the lateral relief (two club-length) option. The dropped ball rolled almost back to its original unplayable position. What are my options now? A: You could play the ball as it lies, incurring only the 1 penalty stroke. For a second penalty stroke, you could declare the ball unplayable again. You could use any of the three options for an unplayable ball: (a) stroke and distance; (b) back on the line from where the ball lies; or (c) within two club-lengths of where the ball lies, not closer to the hole. Since you had not played a stroke after your tee shot, the stroke and distance option would have you to go back to the teeing area. POST | GOLF

Turf Notes

By: Chris Parham, PNCC Golf Course Superintendent

What a great time of year to enjoy the course. The weather has started to turn and there is a freshness in the air. Hopefully, we have made it though hurricane season. As I am writing this article, no hurricane on the radar. The areas we will be working on in the upcoming months is leaf removal. We will be engaging in leaf removal now through December. If the course is too wet for us to be out with equipment, please be patience and we will try and stay on top of leaf removal. Included with the Turf Notes article, on the Golf page of the website, is an article from the USGA about winter management of ultra-dwarf greens. The article gives a good overview of what we will be implementing going into the winter. I hope everyone has had a chance to get out and enjoy the new practice and short game areas. See you out on the course.

We are now offering additional tee-times on Saturday and Sunday. These tee-times will be for 9-hole play only and will begin on hole #10. The additional times will be 8:50, 9:00, and 9:10. These tee-times will not be available on our website and will need to be reserved by contacting the pro shop after 8 am on Wednesday of each week.
