Cookie of the Month
Cocoa-Molasses Drop Cookies
From 1985-2015, H. Robert Sharbaugh was a Member of the Country Club of Asheville and had served time as a Member of the Board for a number of years. He was very well-known and admired by Club Members and staff alike. He meant a great deal to me, especially during my earlier years at the Club. One memory of him that stands out to me in particular was the year that, this self-proclaimed chocoholic, gifted me a very old, yet pristine Hershey’s cookbook from 1934 that had been revised and reprinted in 1971. I think of him fondly every time I open the binding to see his name on the inside cover. Thank you for your service to our country and the many laughs throughout the years. This one is for you Mr. Sharbaugh! Thank you, Bruce McIntosh, from the Country Club of Asheville, for sharing this recipe! Porters Neck members are invited to enjoy this complimentary bite sized treat during your next visit to Porters! INGREDIENTS 1/3 Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar 1/3 Cup Molasses 1 Egg 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour, sifted 1 TSP Baking Powder
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cream butter and sugar; add molasses and the egg. 2. Sift together all dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients. 3. Fold in the nuts and scoop mixture

Turf Notes
BY CHRIS PARHAM, PNCC GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Along with the irrigation project going on, we are continuing to improve the beds and cut back some unwanted vegetation. We have planted some plant material along the berm on 8. The plant material will soon provide a nice screening of the maintenance shop.
FEBRUARY, 2021 We have hit the ground running in 2021 here in the maintenance Department of PNCC. The irrigation project is in full swing. We are working our way through the property and expect to have holes 1, 8 and the driving range along with practice green completed by the end of January. We have the new pump station installed and it is working great.
Porters Neck
We should have a new flag pole installed at the clubhouse the first week of February. We have decided to install the flag pole near the pro shop entrance. This will be a nice addition to the overall landscape of the clubhouse. I hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying the start to 2021. I hope to see you out about on the course.
Golf Course Rules
There are a few rules that need to be followed that are important to the condition of the course and enjoyment of the game. As golfers and members of PNCC, it is your responsibility to follow these rules. Here is a list of the most commonly broken:
01 02 03
When it is Cart Path Only, motorized carts must remain on the cart path at ALL times.
No
exceptions. Players using a Handicap Flag must stay on the path around tee boxes, stay at least 10 yards/30 feet from bunkers, waste areas, and water hazards, and stay at least 30 feet from all greens.
Slower groups should allow faster groups to play through if the slower group has open holes ahead.
POST | GOLF
04
Pull carts are not allowed on tees, greens, collars, or go between the greens and greenside bunkers. Pull carts must be kept at least 10 yards/30 feet from greens and tees.
05 06
Only 2 people shall ride in a golf cart.
Please remember to inform the Pro Shop of any breach of these rules or any other Club Rule pertaining to golf.

Irrigation Update
FEBRUARY PRO SHOP HOURS: MONDAY - SUNDAY 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM
As you are aware, the Club is undergoing some major irrigation work. Work is mostly limited to one hole at a time and we will close that particular hole until the work is completed. For score posting purposes, please score the closed hole as a par plus any strokes you may receive on that hole. For example, if it’s a par 5 and you get a stroke, you would write down a 6.
Putting School Saturday, March 6th, 13th & 20th: This is a 3 Week class with Instructor Dana Kovich will meet on Saturday Mornings from 9:00a-10:30a. Every player should fill in their divots in the fairway. This time of year when the grass is dormant is a time that is really important to fill in your divots. When the grass begins to grow, the grass will fill in the sanded divots and create a smoother more consistent surface. Here are some general rules of thumb for golfers on how to correctly repair a ball mark. 1. Use a pronged ball mark repair tool or tee 2. Insert at the edges of the mark – not the middle of the depression. 3. Bring the edges together, trying not to tear the grass, and then loosen the underlying soil so that the turf is able to root easily. 4. Smooth the surface with a club or foot. You’re done when it’s a surface you would putt over. POST | GOLF

MGA Notes
JOHN TANTILO, MGA PRESIDENT
Major weekend MGA events have already been placed on the Golf Calendar beginning with the Breakfast Scramble on February 20. Our Wednesday schedule is being finalized and will commence on February 24. We are also planning to have some tee times blocked out on Wednesdays in early February for "MGA Open Play". The Governor's Cup Match Play tournament will return this year with a kickoff event on Saturday March 27 and the final shootout on May 19. We hope to begin monthly Stag Days with lunch mid-year depending on the virus conditions and what the club is allowed to do. The year-long MGA Cup competition returns this year. There will be a playoff in November with a total purse of $3,000 again, but we are going to tweak the details based on feedback from last year. Some of the changes we are working on include adjusting the points awarded per event, eliminating flights, opening the MGA play window outside the regular Wednesday morning time block, and expanding the playoff to greater than 16 qualifiers. The intent of the changes is to give more members more opportunity to qualify for the year-end playoffs. Complete details will be released in February before the points season begins. POST | GOLF

WINTER TENNIS UPDATE A QUICK WORD FROM RAFA
During these cold winter months, our courts freeze when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. When the courts freeze overnight they take longer than usual to dry because they go through a freeze/thaw/dry cycle. Once the courts are dry we need to wait until they harden to be playable again. Hard freezes can close tennis courts for a couple of days. We will do our best to keep you updated when the courts freeze.

PICKLEBALL KINDNESS A MESSAGE FROM RAFA We all started playing as a novice and likely had some people who played a role in guiding us to help us improve. I challenge you all to take every opportunity presented to you when playing with a new player to help improve their game in one way or another. Or just reassure them that it's not a big deal if they make a mistake because it happens to all of us.Playing with a partner who is too serious or far too overbearing often makes novice players perform worse. It's much better to help boost these players up rather than to look down on them.
