We will begin on July 13th at Old North State, where we will play golf and stay in the lodges that are on premise. Turf Notes

By: Chris Parham, PNCC Golf Course Superintendent

It is hard to believe it is already July 2021! Time goes by fast when you are busy. We continue to work on all areas throughout the course. Pruned back azaleas on holes 2,3 and 4. Removed some azaleas on 2 and re-sodded the area behind 2 green. Currently working on beds and general cleanup through out the course as well. We are in full course maintenance mode. Our goal for each week is to mow all the tees, fairways and approaches 3 times per week. We mow the rough at least once and now we have started mowing some of the rough twice a week. All other turf areas we mow once a week. The clubhouse grounds are mowed 3 times a week. The bunkers are fly mowed and edged every two weeks. The month of June the bunkers were washed out 4 times which we call extreme and it averages 54-man hours just to get the bunkers some what playable. The exposed bunker linear is getting worse, we are aware and have started removing the linear. Please be careful when you are in the hazard hitting a shot.

Short Game Project Update Short game area is growing in nicely. This is due to the fact that June was such a wet month for us at PNCC, with over 14 inches for the month. We noticed that we needed to add more drainage into the short game area, so we added substantial drainage throughout the area. The greens are really starting to fill in and grow. We will start everyday mowing and frequent top dressing to make the greens into a putting surface. The range project is moving along. We have started installing sod on the range tee and still moving dirt and shaping the target greens. We are still on schedule for our late August opening. We have installed and are in the process of installing 3 backup generators out on the course. The purpose is to make sure we have reliable power supply for the pumps that are used for removing water out on the course. We installed one at the 8th tee. This generator is responsible for keeping the main pump on 8 running. The pump removes most of the water from the range, holes 1,8 and some of the clubhouse. One generator was installed on hole 4. This will keep the water pump operational on hole 4. The other generator is located at the maintenance shop to keep us operational. I hope everyone has been out to enjoy the course.

Summer Heat

The Hot weather is here! Please be prepared for the heat. Drink plenty of water before and during your round. Wear light colored clothing, wear a cap and preferably a wide brimmed hat, use plenty of sunscreen and use plenty of good judgment while playing. If you or a partner starts to feel bad, do not wait, and please come off the course immediately and get into some AC. Two Person Tough Pin Day Scramble

SATURDAY, JULY 10TH | 9:30 AM SHOTGUN FORMAT: 2 Person, 18 Hole Team Scramble. Must count at least 4 tee shots per player for the round. Both team members hit their drive, then pick the best drive. All players will hit from that point. Continue this process until the ball is holed out. Hole locations will be in very difficult positions. Double Bogey is the Maximum score ! There will be a Men’s Division and a Ladies/Mixed Division.

Hazardous Weather Policy

In the event of hazardous weather conditions, it is the responsibility of individual golfers to decide whether or not to continue play. Players should consider the predicted weather conditions and information they may get from the Pro Shop. We encourage players to “Put Your Personal Safety First!” The course restroom shelters on Holes 6 and 13 are equipped with lightning rod protection and offer a safe haven for players who suspend play in their vicinity. During Club sponsored events, including MGA and LGA events, the Pro Shop will suspend play if it believes players’ safety may be jeopardized by hazardous weather. During Club events players will be notified as follows:

Discontinuance of Play for Dangerson Situation A suspension of play for a dangerous situation will be signaled by 1 long air horn blast. All play shall cease immediately upon notification. All practice areas will be closed during suspension of play until committee has declared them open. Resumption of Play Signaled by 2 short consecutive horn blasts.

Bogey Boys! MEN'S BEGINNER PLAYING LESSONS

Ask The Rule Guy!

BY GUY BEALE, CGA RULES OFFICIAL AND PORTERS NECK MEMBER Q: In the event of hazardous weather conditions, it is the responsibility of individual golfers to decide whether or not to continue play. Players should consider the predicted weather conditions and information they may get from the Pro Shop. During Club sponsored events, including MGA and LGA events, the Pro Shop will suspend play if it believes players’ safety may be jeopardized by hazardous Q: I hooked my second shot on Hole #14 into the red penalty area. I estimated the two club-length relief area from where the ball crossed the edge of the penalty area. Rather than dropping the ball, I just placed it in the relief area. Is there a penalty for this?

Wednesday, July 28th | 3:00 PM: No pressure - just fun! Playing lessons include: Instruction on the Driving Range as well as on the Golf Course with Dana Kovich in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Instruction also includes Terminology, Basic Swing, Grip, Stance, Posture, Putting, and Short Game. Course management, rules, and club selection will also be addressed.

A: Yes, there is. In this situation, you get a total of 3 penalty strokes -- 1 for taking relief from the penalty area and 2 more for placing rather than dropping the ball. If you had dropped the ball in the relief area, and it rolled outside that area, you would have to re-drop the ball. If the ball rolled out of the relief area after you re-dropped it, then you would place the ball on the spot where it first hit the ground. But the relief procedure must start with dropping the ball, not placing it.

Comments from Coach Jordan! We can learn many lessons on the golf course that translate to invaluable life lessons. Golf is the only game in the world where a player can call a penalty on themselves. By demonstrating honesty and integrity, I would like to shine a light on Hadley Cerrone for calling a penalty on herself when none of her playing partners saw the penalty occur. Hadley could have easily not said a word but decided to step up and do the right thing. I am so proud of our students and hope they are learning more than golf during our Wednesday afternoon Development League. POST | JUNIOR NEWS
