MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS His top 30 effort earned him a check for $41,013 and a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the three-event series that determines PGA Tour eligibility for the 2021-22 season. Smalley has made the cut in all five of his PGA Tour starts and earned enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top-200 and qualify for the Korn Ferry playoffs. Smalley joined Sedgefield in June of 2020 and estimates he has played 75 rounds or more on the classic Donald Ross design. “I feel pretty comfortable with the lines on each hole,” he said during the week. “The course is always in really good shape. It’s playing a little different than it usually does for us. There’s a little more runout in the fairways, which has changed a couple of the clubs that I hit off of the tee. The greens are a little quicker, but other than that, it’s the same golf course.” Photo Courtesy: John Gillooly/Wyndham Championship

KEVIN KISNER WINS WILD 6-MAN PLAYOFF AT THE WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP Kevin Kisner birdied the second extra hole to end a six-man playoff and capture a thrilling 2021 Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club. Known as a dogged match-play competitor, Kisner stiffed his approach shot on 18 and calmly rolled in a 3-foot putt. For the victory — the fourth of his career and first since 2019 — the former University of Georgia Bulldog banked $1,152,000.

Smalley enjoyed plenty of local support during the week. Along with his father and his mother, Maria — both of whom have caddied for Smalley throughout his career — his sister, Katie, and numerous friends and playing partners from Sedgefield followed his group and rooted him on. “It was nice to hear their cheers out there,” Smalley said. “I don’t get to play in front of a whole lot of people very often. It’s pretty cool to have people scream at you after you make a putt. To have an opportunity to play a PGA Tour event on your home course is pretty special. I think it helped me out quite a bit. I know my way around. I’ve played out here numerous times, so I felt comfortable on the course. To have that finish was pretty cool.”

Adam Scott shot 65 in the final round to make the playoff. He had a chance for victory on the first playoff hole, but his 4-foot birdie putt never threatened the cup. Kisner and Scott were joined in the playoff by former champion Si Woo Kim, Braden Grace, Kevin Na and Roger Sloan. It marked just the third time in PGA Tour history that six golfers have gone to a playoff. Kisner began Sunday’s final round four shots behind leader Russell Henley, but he birdied Nos. 16 and 17, eventually shooting 66 to reach 15 under and the playoff. “My first playoff win,” said Kisner, who was previously 0-5 in playoffs prior to his Wyndham title. “To be standing here is pretty sweet.” Henley held the lead after the first three rounds. He recovered from a slow start on Sunday to reach 17-under after a birdie on the 10th hole, but the Georgia Bulldog bogeyed three of the next four holes and came to the 72nd hole needing par to stay at 15 under. He fell short of the playoff after narrowly missing a 5-foot par putt. It proved a brutal ending to what had been an otherwise amazing performance from Henley. McConnell Golf member Alex Smalley didn’t quite play his way into the six-man playoff, but the former Duke University star gained plenty more along the way. Playing on his home course, Sedgefield CC, the 24-yearold Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, including a sizzling 64 on Friday. He responded to the heat of Sunday’s final-round pressure in equally torrid fashion, finishing his day with three straight birdies and a 4under 66. In just his fifth PGA Tour event, playing on a sponsor’s exemption in a fullfield event on the last weekend of the PGA Tour regular season, Smalley finished at 10-under par and tied for 29th.

Pro Shop Hours: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM

Notes From the Pro By: Robert Loper PNCC Head Golf Professional

Believe it or not, Fall is right around the corner. With more comfortable weather, the golf course gets busier. It is important that everybody does a good job managing their tee time so all members can enjoy the course. Cancel a time as soon as you know it is not needed and only put names in of the players that are going to play.

Upcoming Golf Events September 2nd & 16th: Bogey Girls September 6th: Labor Day, Open for Regular Play September 7th: Course Closed September 8th & 22nd: MGA Play All Day September 11th & 12th: PNCC Championship Weekend September 15th: Ladies Interclub Match at Magnolia Greens September 21st & 23rd: LGA Member-Member September 26th: McConnell Couples' Championship October 2nd: Callaway Fitting Day

While on the course, remember to keep up with the group in front of yours, and if you can’t, let faster groups play through. Always repair your ball marks and fill in your divots with sand. Dispose of trash in trash cans or leave in the cart. Try to leave the course in better shape than you found it!

Raking the Bunkers

We have a serious problem of members not raking bunkers after playing out of them. This is disrespectful to your fellow members that are playing behind you. Raking the bunkers also helps the maintenance staff maintain the bunkers more efficiently. If your ball is in a bunker, players should enter the bunker from the lowest spot and not try to crawl up or down the face. Rakes should be placed outside of the bunkers in a area where they won’t interfere with play, that’s usually just behind the bunker at the low spot. It only takes a few seconds to rake the bunker and leave it in better shape than you found it. Remember to always repair your ball marks on the greens, fill in divots and rake your bunkers. SHORT COURSE SCHEDULE Special thanks to McConnell Golf for this beautiful new addition to Porters Neck!

Monday Closed All Day for Maintenance

For safety reasons, we ask that members DO NOT practice while the course is open for Play and please DO NOT attempt to play the course when it is time for Practice only. When the short course is open for play, please only tee off from the tee markers.

Wednesday, Friday and Sunday

On most “play” days, we are going to only use 3 holes. The big green directly behind the range will be a dedicated practice green that will remain available for practice during “play”.

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

DRIVING RANGE SCHEDULE Monday

Tuesday – Sunday

Closed All Day

7:30am – 6:30pm

7:30am-2pm: Practice Only 2pm – 3pm: Clean up and set up 3pm: Short Course Play Only(Bring Your Own Balls)

7:30am: Close -Practice Only All Day

We will be monitoring usage of the short game area and driving range and make adjustments to the schedule as needed. This schedule will change when the days begin to get shorter in the fall.

We will be using a rope on the range to help define the hitting area each day. We ask that you always hit in front of the rope. The driving range will close every evening at 6:30pm. The addition of multiple targets and bunkers have made cleaning the range more time consuming.

Full Golf members and their guests have access to the practice facilities before a round of golf. If a Full Golf member brings a guest to use the range and/or play the short course, the guest fee will be $15.

All 10-12 flags on the target areas will be all white and have reflectors for rangefinder use. There will be no yardage markings on the range. We have added some Laser Link rangefinders on the range that will look like birdhouses. These are available to anyone that may need the use of a rangefinder.

Sports and Clubhouse members DO NOT have access to the short game area and driving range unless they are playing golf. We are limiting usage due to the demand of golf course usage and practice facilities. We will evaluate this policy at the end of the year

Q: My ball lay in an area of ground under repair in the general area. There was a large divot hole within the one club-length relief area near where I would like to drop my ball. Am I allowed to replace the divot before I drop my ball? A: No. The relief area where you would drop or place a ball is one of the protected "conditions affecting the stroke". If replacing a divot in the divot hole would improve the area in which you would drop the ball, you may not do that. Also, you may not remove or press down a divot that was already replaced in the divot hole within the relief area. The penalty for breach of this Rule is the general penalty, loss of hole in match play or 2 strokes in stroke play. After you play your ball, you may replace the divot. POST | GOLF
